Safe for coronavirus? I'm talking about that and the fact that it may be abused. And that's exactly what I'm saying, am I not? That's my issue with Trump advocating for that drug, especially given that he has investment in that company.

"Safe" is relative, when it comes to medications.

As someone who can prescribe and use a number of different drugs, one thing I always have to take into account is what existing drugs a patient may be on, because drugs can interact with each other, as well as preexisting conditions that the patient may have as well. A drug that may be "safe" for one patient, may not be "safe" for another. eg. there are definite concerns with hydrochloroquine and some heart conditions.

"Safe" is also a curve. In toxicology, there is this thing called the LD50 -- Lethal Dose, 50% -- which is the estimated dose at which half of those who take it will die. However, some people may die even though they are given less than the LD50, and some people may survive even though they got more than LD50. And even though drug dosages are typically given well below LD50 to stay on the safe side for most everybody, there is still the possibility that someone falls on the wrong far end of that curve, and has problems with it anyways.

The research for use of chloroquine-type medication for treatment is definitely not comprehensive enough right now to say if it is a useful treatment or not. The studies are ongoing right now, but we still need more data. And no, "better do something that might help, than do nothing," which I've been reading in a lot of different places, is not a good enough justification.

I'm reminded of something that the guidelines were changed for about 10 years ago. We used to give a certain medication X, for certain procedures, for people with conditions A, B, C, and D (related conditions), because they were at risk of developing problems after the procedure, which could be potentially fatal. That was the guideline for decades. However, as the studies got better, and we got more data, we found out that the risk of dying from side effects of medication X (which was very low to begin with), was just ever so slightly higher than the risk of dying without it for patients in the A group. So the guidelines got changed, and medication X is now only given for B, C, and D.

Stuff like this is why we need the research.

It was misreported because Trump supporters were trending the hashtag. Trump didn't retweet anything regarding it, he quoted a tweet containing the hashtag and replied to it, not even addressing it. Still stupid to signal-boost it, but his idiot sycophants are the ones that are to blame.
