Art DGM Volume Covers Thread

I recall when everyone was nitpicking the Timothy cover. Now the cover seems worthy of praise.

I liked the Allen cover because there was symbolism! This has none of that. Just seems pure fanservice. It has barely anything to do with the arc, no hints, no new characters, just rehash with some sketches that will please a great number of fans.

Hopefully the colored cover is better. If Hoshino gives us another plain white background...

These days Hoshino usually restricts her color illustrations to like three or four main colors, so one of the colors will be blue (for Kanda's hair, which as of Chapter 187, has been dyed completely blue >_>), one of the colors will be black (their uniforms), and one of the colors will be gold (Timcanpy, who looks like a fricking beach ball). The small details will be colored accordingly, but I'm betting that blue will be the main color.

i'm sorry, but there is nothing i can do about the obvious Yullen fanservice here.
.....at this point i'm out of ideas as to what could possibly make this cover important enough to put as vol. 20 cover.
maybe hoshino ran out of ideas herself? =/

I think she's just putting that in there since there's a lot of Yullen fans and this is probably the only time when Kanda and Allen can share the same cover for themselves. Hoshino hardly ever does things twice so I doubt we'll see a cover like this again. (I tend to be wrong though...)

I'm hoping that it'll look less gay once we can see it in colour. But either way, I'm still going to buy it.

I'm glad that everyone's in agreement about the cover. I thought that I was the only one with a dirty mind when I saw Allen and Kanda laying down next to each other in the 69 position while wearing tight leather clothing.

I am going to predict that the cover will probably have 10% to do with the actual plotline, OR have characters that have previously not been on covers, because Hoshino's done that before. >_>

Therefore, I predict either Tevak, Mysterious Ghost Woman, or Rene will be on the cover. I doubt Alma will be on the cover because I don't think a dead character has been on a volume cover of D.Gray-man yet. :'D

That being said, I'm now going to feel sorely disappointed if Hoshino draws anything else, great!

Clearly I have no idea what I'm talking about, nevermind!

Except Alma isn't dead. he was in a coma. now we don't know what happened xD
But, Ghost Woman may show up sooner or later: she's too important in Kanda's life to be ignored completely - since she set his life story pretty much.
Tevak and Renee are both too small charcaters to appear on there i think.

But yeah. Now i want to see that in cover......so what, like 12 days till 195 spoilers? =) yay!

I don't go by covers too much, but apparently her covers hold spoilers/hints? well, i can't really think of anything for volume 20...

If anyone can explain the weird dead baby Komui holds in volume 5, that would be something!

I honestly don't know if all of her covers have symbolic meanings. Some of them feel loaded, and some of them feel quite simple. Covers usually show some sort of aspect that unifies the whole volume, athough they can be misleading, like the surprisingly peaceful cover of volume 15.

What can I say, Hoshino's proven to me that I can never possibly predict what she does. xD

Yes, but that predictability is what makes this series so awesome! plus, her plot twists cover all bases, unlike in other series where there are loopholes. DGM is a decent length series already, and honestly we know basically/relatively nothing. atleast, nothing compared to what we don't know yet =P
Uh, Komui is on cover 7 i believe. The baby's arm is sown together, and there are puzzle pieces falling out from the 'head' area. as i remember, that was when everything in the order first began falling apart - the first biggest ark that led to the present events. allen lost his arm during that time and lenalee was facing a life or death battle with lvl 3, and loosing those two would be devastating strengh wise. Plus, Komui doesn't think members of order as tools (especially leenalee), he actually cares for them. so in a sense, the show of power and movement on the Earls side during that time was really tough on him.=)

I dunno why volume 15 would be peaceful when they're facing a level 4, but hey, she probably draws what comes to mind, and it isn't necessarily tied to the featured arc =D

does anyone know what Hoshino uses to color her pages? It looks like she uses watercolor, and if she does, she needs extra epicness-credit, because that is one of the hardest media to use, especially if she can create such pages.

I believe she uses Copic Markers. Copics can give art a somewhat watercolor-like appearance depending on how you use it. I don't like her current watery look, however. I preferred her colored art when it was seamless.

I also think she uses copics,or rather i'm really sure,as i use them as well.Sometimes she also uses her computer to make little details,but most of it is done with copics.

Oh yes, that's exactly copic pens. It is easy to recognize when comparing with watercolor pics.

Some months ago I gave up reading DGM from chap ~120...I can't remember exactly but some day I will reread it. I like the mangaka's art style very much .

I'm not sure about anyone else, but maybe its because of their uniform or something or maybe their involvement in the chapters of the book (talking about chapters compiled to volume 20). I mean, first theres the fact that only Allen and Kanda are wearing those types of exorcist uniforms (yeah, just talking about the exorcists. 3rds not included. So is Link). We can excuse that though, cause they were both assigned in desert locations and their original uniforms would've been too hot to wear.

The involvement part, I still haven't placed a theory on since a lot of people say it should have been Kanda and Alma instead of Allen in the cover. Well, maybe its because for one, their the only exorcists focused on all those chapters (well, mostly Kanda and Alma which is why people are complaining so much), and for the other, because they are both reasons for the invasion of the North American branch. That bring two major points.

1. That Kanda is needed to awaken Alma
- which is why he gets cover page, heck, he's had most of the spotlight.

2. That the Earl (and maybe other Noahs) want Allen to leave the order
- which still doesn't explain why Allen gets cover page in 69 position with Kanda. XD I actually love the cover but I wont fangirl over it, CAUSE THATS JUST ME.

NOW. On to the theory of why Allen and not Alma gets cover page.

It started at the end of vol.19. I mean, the Earl did bring Allen all the way to the NA Branch for a reason more than being an audience to Alma's awakening. I cant really explain it, but even though Allen was barely focused on the chapters, his presence in the branch was obviously important. How he reacts to the events and his choices in future chapters, Kanda's memories trigger them. The Noahs are trying to get Allen to leave the order, right?

Of course, like I said earlier, this is all just my theory. Its not yet done, but long explanations(especially those I cant quite put in words) are not my forte, so I'll just leave it here.

the theory fits perfectly! it's just a matter of it not feeling right, only because Allen's involvement compared to Kanda's/Alma's is almost non-existant. Though obviously Allen will be the center of attention in probably upcoming chapters, so it the Volume included a different aray of chapters, Allen's position would make more sense (and i'm NOT talking about the 69. then again, maybe i am xD)
so yeah. i just feel uncomfortable with him on cover rather than alma. On the other hand, if Alma was going to be pictured, there may have been some unwanted spoilers in that, so Allen had to be a sub...... =)

1 - Allen is winking. Wasn't there a trend with the 14th that he closes one eye and touhes people on the side of there face when he appears? hm.......
2 - TIM'S GETTING FAT. Soon, he will be useless and have to hitch rides. xD

Okay, I must admit I find Kanda a little more sexy than usual. Even in the hard gay uniform, he actually looks pretty cool. THANK YOU hoshino for the lack of purple.

Now if only she took an eraser on Allen. I am not pleased with his appearance at all. Kanda alone makes sense, but Allen being there really kills it for me. ;-_-
