Re: French : a hard langage [ Part 1, and more i hope :) ]

I wonder whatever happened to MaggeuS, he just disappeared after a while here... ah well. Anybody want to tell us a few more French words that they think would be good for us to know?

Re: French : a hard langage [ Part 1, and more i hope :) ]

Well, I'm not a teacher, and the fact is : French is really horrible to learn XD Be careful...

Well, I will tell you the names of some countries in french, it could be useful...

United States of America = (Les) Etats Unis d'Amérique (don't forget that in french that's ALWAYS in the plural...)
Spain = Espagne
Germany = Allemagne
England = Angleterre (well, a lot of frenchies confuse England with Great Britain... But there is also Ireland (Irlande), Scotland (Ecosse) and Wales (Pays de Galles... is that all ?)
Russia = Russie
Austria = Autriche

etc... (i'm too lazy now XD)

Ah, I wanted to tell something... When in english you say
"Thank you !"
"You're welcome !"

We say :
- Merci !
- De rien !

Not the same at all XD Like your "atishoo" for our "atchoum"...

About sounds :

bark ! bark ! --> ouaf ! ouaf ! (even dogs have an accent XD)
cock-a-doodle-do ! --> cocorico ! (I never hard a cockerel (=coq) make a sound like that... cock a doodle doo... XD)

Well, i suppose there is other sounds but I don't know them XD

Re: [Study] French

French is not that difficult, sure if you compare it to english; it's much more complex but for me german grammar is much more hard, in french there's many rules but few irregular things and it's the opposite for the german, not that many rules but damn there are so much things that you HAVE to learn by HEART (the pronouns die der das, the weak/strong verbs...)

Re: how to learn french?

I use Live Mocha on occasion. It's a pretty good site that teaches you different languages through step-by-step modules. You just sign up there and it'll keep track of your progress for you.

Re: how to learn french?

I used this textbook French For Reading Knowledge by Palmeri/Milligan. Maybe you'll find it easier than jumping straight into spoken French.

Re: how to learn french?

I think this works for all languages.
Once you get the vocabulary and grammar down, the best way to truly learn it is to listen to music. I learn so much by just listening to music videos with lyrics below the screen.

total immersion is the way to learn a language, if you can do everything you enjoy doing english in french all the time then you should be successful

Re: how to learn french?

Start to learn the basic grammar and vocabulary, textbooks would be the best to start. Then as joe_bevis said, do everything you like in french.
In my case, I learnt english (since I'm french ^^) by reading mangas/watching movies/listenning to music.
If you have any question just ask me ;)

Re: how to learn french?

you could also visit our International Resort- where you can find the French thread. As a supplement you could try chatting with them, at least conversational French. ^^

Re: how to learn french?

If you want to speak with french natives, you can go on www.sharedtalk.com.

And I would say like the others, read and listen as mush as you can. Then, once you can understand it, try to produce it by speaking or writing.

Re: French Thread

Merci d'avance.

Ready to help!Cya
