I think that people underestimate Erza since the beginning. She is portrayed as a Fairy Tail's powerhouse the same as Laxus. They are basically on par. I think, on under circonstances, Erza can unlock more potential power due to PoF than Laxus, so she is "potentially" above him (like Natsu has far greater potential power than Gajeel, tapping into PoF to grow into Dragon Force, even during Tartaros Arc where they were portrayed even).

This is their way to fight. Erza is strategic and analyse foe's strength and weakness, like Grey. Laxus is an agressive character who want to exterminate his foe quickly, like Natsu.
The same was seen during their encounter. Erza was defensive, analysed and held back her strike on the first part where Laxus was going all out since the beginning.

I think Gray is a great character. Potential to be clearly badass when he is in rage by Demon slayer's mood. His story is great as well, giving him potentially the Reason to tap into emotional power the same way as Erza : both survived due to friends' sacrifices, and they have to live for them. They are not in the same tier, Erza has much potential level, but Gray can grow far stronger in circonstances. I put him above the like of Gajeel and even Jellal for now, but the Jellal's future fight will determinate his current level.

Gray is one of my favorite but I think he is less expoited. I would like to see the fight between him and the Strauss siblings. We know he won, and even if they were exausted, it is a great fact for him, as he took down the two by himself and not only Mirajane. Elfman has a great power up and is a real tank for now, not fodder. Taking down the Raijinshou by only physical Devil Slayer and no magic is clearly a great fact as well.

I think Gray is usally underestimate. He is below Gildarts, Erza and Laxus's tier but remains one of the strongest in the Guild. For me, with Natsu, he is in the top five. Gray is a balance and strategic character, the same way as Erza, analyse situation and foe's strength/weakness. To the opposite, Natsu is an agressive character the same way as Laxus, who use all strength without restriction to explode a foe (Natsu began to think to restrain his Magic when he think to fight multiple opponents, like he did against Gajeel. but it is not in his Nature ^^).
Gray indeed is cool.
And he is always somehow equal to natsu.
Lets hope mishma wont forget him
Yes, gray performance was lackluster till now in 100 year quest, but this also happened in alverzec starting. Hopefully gray will prove to be around natsu again by the end

Gray and Natsu are equal. The comparison is Batman and Superman.

Natsu may have all the power but Gray has the brains and a better mind than Natsu. Gray doesn't need OP Hax to beat Natsu, his devil Slayer magic ain't an asspull on how he learned it quick because it's ice. He's already an Ice Mage who was given another ice power, it's like giving a Kung Fu Master weapons because they are adapt to it.

Batman and Superman are not equals. Like even remotely. The gap between Natsu and Gray is nowhere near Bats and Supes. But it's there, particularly when Natsu starts tapping into higher levels of POF.

They are not equal at all. And yes, DeS was an asspull.

I love Laxus but it was just wtf that he got RL cuz genetics. I feel that RL should have been one of his early arsenals, that way it wouldn't have to look like an asspull.

Since when has Gray been this mastermind tactician?

No offense to the gray fans but knowing when not to jump in a fight he’ll lose doesn’t make him any smarter than the regular bunch lol

He's just more of a tactician than Natsu and Erza.

DeS is an asspull. He got it out of nowhere from his dad. How can you say RL is but not DeS? RL is just buffed lightning no?

Agreed.

I get the impression from quite a number of FT readers that Gray is some kind of genius tactician that wins wars with amazing strategies. :lmao

He is perceptive enough to quickly adapt and show quick thinking in his fights. The likes of Natsu and Erza have also shown to be capable of, just on a less frequent basis. It is as though some build him up to have a fearsome intellect to suit their narrative. Gray, like majority of the FT chars, rely on his physical attributes fire and foremost in fights. The only ones who are debatable are Lucy and Wendy. And while his intellect gets hyped up, people tend to downplay Gray's physical attributes. His stamina, tenacity and strength are his most notable traits but we rarely see people talking about them. It's like a racial prejudice e.g. you must be good in Maths if you are Asian, or physically adept but low in intelligence if you are black.

The purpose of the Sun Village arc is to introduce devil slayer magic and Silver to the readers. It introduced the mechanics of the magic, and its' interaction with demons (Doriate) and even dragons (Atlas Flame). This was the precursor to the Tartaros arc when the magic and Silver's objective was explored further.

Not the power itself, the way he got it.
Even though it’s not the first time we’ve seen magics being transferred (fairy magics) the transferring of a whole slayer magic was odd to be fair.

Can Gray be considered a tactician anymore? He either fights with brute strength or uses Iced Shell?

He hasn't used his wits in battle since Tartaros.

Idk, but can Laxus or Gajeel even be considered dragon slayers anymore? They either fight dragons in their human form or will need help from real dragons to beat one?

They haven't killed an actual dragon in battle since... oh wait, never.

Lol, forgive me for the off-topic post, but I just found this comment funny.

Objectively, Gray has used more wits throughout the entire series than the majority of DS having actually slayed a real dragon with their own magic. Doesn't stop us from calling them dragon slayers though.

I forgot to laugh. Forgive me.

Gray hasn't used his wits since Tartaros. How can he be considered a tactician?

OK so throughout the series he's used it more than others, doesn't apply to now.

Slaying a dragon is a little harder than using your smarts in battle but hey, that's just me.

Funny, I never knew that being a tactician comes with an expiration date.

Most people describe Gray as a tactician when they are referring to his overall character. Fairy Tail is a manga with over 600+ chapters and you expect Gray to use wits in every single fight when 90% of the other characters don't even use half the amount of intelligence that Gray shows in a single battle?

And quite conveniently, the only major arc left post-Tartaros was Alvarez Arc, which we all know indiscriminately resulted in every character facing massive drops in IQ as well as devastating setbacks to their reputation.

Even a stable character such as Acnologia went full on retard mode, and you expect Gray to fight with his normal level of intelligence in the vast sea of bad writing that affected everybody?

But congratz, if you think using your smarts in FT battles is so easy, I'd like to see examples of where other characters have even come close to matching the strategies used in Gray's fights.

As for the dragon slayer example, I was just simply trying to follow your thought process, which apparently didn't work out too well, did it?

No need to be rattled, it's a simple question:

Can Gray still be considered a tactician?

Other characters and terrible dragon slayer analogies are irrelevant. Were talking Gray here.
