I liked the actual cardgame as well. I had this friend in highschool that would bring a box of Yugi-oh cards and we'd play a lot during recess time. He knew like every detail of the game and so, me and our other buddies would gang up on him during a battle. everyone watching would just disagree with him and that it doesn't make sense.. he lose.
oh God.. you made me remember! those were the times! so much nostalgia! there's also those circle things that you'd hit with another circle thing and if you flip it you win. can't remember the name. and there's the bragging of pokemon on gameboy.
You mean beyblade But i never liked that one and the actual topgame was not succesful where i live ^^
Yugioh back then was so epic. I was 14 and the best among my friends (and i actually knew the rules of the game well and i was 'judge level 2' (so i actually had a card by konami assuring other people that i know the rules well enough to be referee in tournaments).
The thing is what kind of freaks you meet on those tournaments. the bad players and the good players are all normal people. the bad ones are just there for fun, often kids or new players, and dont take it too serious even if you beat them by a far margin. You mostly have a nice time with them.
The really good players know each other from oturnaments and have fun competing. Normal, fine people.
But the middle consists out of very questionable personas.
I remember that when i was 14 or 15 i was at a tournament and playing against an adult man.
And i beat him two times in a row, thus had won the match. it were close matches, but still.
And then he went angry, accusing me of just having luck and that i should not have won because his deck was so much better than mine.
HE started yelling at me, until his wife (who was playing right beside us) stepped in, admonishing him that it is his fault because he didnt, as she told him, add a second 'vampire lord' to his deck. Then they yelled at each other about the game and i silently went away informing the referee about my win.
I also remember a guy with a cowboy hat, only one leg and pink cardcovers who tried to rhyme while announcing his moves.
Some of these people were scary.
I am not one of these people overhyping berserk, but......Read Berserk.
The thing about Berserk is that i have never met a person who did not like Berserk. No matter whether you are just in for the show or get deeply invested, berserk is great.
Like, HxH is my favourite manga of them all, i like it more than berserk or anything else, but i understand that HxH loses a lot of appeal if you don't want to think about the things happening there (at least lately).
If you just wanna read something before going to sleep, the dark continent or election arc would be too text heavy.
It's not like that with berserk: You will see insanely gory action (violence, rape, monster violence, monster rape, psychological warfare, war itself, and generally a dude with a giant sword who does NOT fuck arround but chops arround) and an actually interesting storyline.
This story is easy to comprehend, what makes it gripping is the symbolism and the grittyness.
The maincomponent of the early berserk chapters is rage. Simply rage, depicted in all of its facets. And this is simple but fascinating.

Well if we are at suggesting manga:
A very underrated manga is Vinland Saga.
It is definitely in my top 5, even after all that time and with the slow release.
I was never let down by a chapter of Vinland Saga.
not beyblade.. it was made or something like a cardboard.. you'd stack up yours and your opponents and then hit it to flip it.

I got hooked reading Berserk that I skipped meal and just kept on reading until my head hurt. So I'm trying to stay away from it and just read it casually.
Regarding Vinland Saga, I just came across it a few hours ago. I'm thinking of reading it along with Valkyrie Profile.
Oh i dont remember that game.
The only other game i remember from back then is dungeon dice monsters. It was a yugioh spin off that never took off, but i actually liked it.
Woulda played it if it got popular.
I just love tournaments. I dont even care what i am playing, it's thrilling.
But people there are sometimes....mental.
But you know which guys are even worse (but still not stranger, just more aggressive) than the yugioh crowd?
The super smash bros community.
I do not even dare to go to tournaments anymore because there are children who will start to cry if you beat them.
And unlike popular opinion, i dont actually enjoy making children cry.

I am sure Hide plays no important role in this manga, but i like him. He is a good best friend. I also like the mainchar, he is a bit like me.
I actually met one girlfriend of mine the way he met his ghoul, by being attracted to her because we read the same book and started talking about it.
She did not try to kill me tho.
Must say i like it so far . I like the references to literature. This might get self sufficient if it is overdone (just introducing more and more obscure books which the reader has to have knowledge off to get what is said) but for now i enjoy it.
The way things are handled is also pretty nice. The shift from just being attracted to women to actually being attracted to flesh was nicely done.
Cowboy bebop had great music in it.
Youtube plays videos itself, and when i was on a roll of anime music, suddenly i thought to myself: Wait, this soundtrack is great, now from which anime is it (because i actually dont like most anime soundtracks). And it was just plain old cowboy bebop again, standing the test of time.
When talking about anime, i feel like i should share the best anime/cartoon in the world and a best of of it:

Both of these two characters are much anticipated to return and Hide has such a mysterious stigma around him these days that he's immortalised into the current discussion

Oh, nice, i didn't exspect that. Seems like he will turn into a ghoul or another important figure too then and be more than just a friend.
It always bothered me in sailor moon (i know, very different series ) that bunny seemed to have basically forgotten her family and early friends like naru or motoki. I actually like characters having some kind of social grounding even in action manga, exspecially when it is something besides a love interest.

Coming to think of it, i think i would tremendously enjoy togashi writing a shojo or magical girl manga like sailor moon.

But yes Hide, while I don't think nor want him to a be ghoul (Happening way to much lately. Oh wow so he was a ghoul the whole time), I still think as do many others that he's very relevant to the plot
I don;t think an Author should be judged on their ability to write in any kind of other format. Example: I greatly respect Ishida because he's a master of the Seinen Demographic. I might think he'd be able to write other kinds of manga, but I wouldn't want him to

There are creator's who go by gutfeeling and can only do a few things, but do them very well, and there are authors who study different formats thouroughly and thus can pull off anything, simply because they understand the format very well.
That does not mean that what they create is amazing (you need talent and some original ideas for that of course), but they could do any genre decently.
Togashi himself said that he thinks new manga authors should read a lot of manga, even those which they dont like, and try to understand what people like about them and how they work.
And that is true. That is how a filmschool teaches film.
It is actually much harder to be the guy who has awesome ideas but has to learn how to properly formulate them in a certain genre or format than to be the guy who can write a decent sitcom episode in a day and just has to get a good idea for an exspecially interesting sitcom setting.
If Togashi would not understand how shonen tropes work, he would not have been able to deconstruct and play with them so well.
A differing example would be Toryama. Toryama had actually no idea what he was doing when he wrote dragon ball. He himself said that he made up the story on the go and just wrote from chapter to chapter about thinks he found interesting and some ideas he had.
In Toryama's case it worked off because Toryama was generally funny and is a capable character designer, but in many cases Mangaka have some great ideas about worldbuilding, scenes or characters, but on the long run, they don't understand how their format works and arc fatique sets in.

I don't think togashi would care a lot if the manga is behind exspectation.
It would be a short one anyway, and i do think that he is popular enough to get 5 volumes through no matter what.
And if not, who cares? He got money. If his heart is behind it, he could even publish it himself.
