Since we are on the topic of the testing gate, I'd just like to say something on the matter.
First off, yes we see them all open it together instead of individually. I did not have a problem with this as it was clearly done for pacing reasons.

Also it was mentioned several times afterwards that they were able to open the gate individually after that instance (presumably they did on the way out, off screen). This is mentioned in conversation between Gon and Killua during Heaven's Arena.

I thought it was the most effective way to show them all opening the gate and keep pacing tight and within time restrictions.

I never saw that one panel as a big moment for Leorio, considering they all could open the gate after that anyways. It was one panel, nothing really about it that was conveyed as a big moment for Leorio. They all grew stronger at the gate, if they placed so much emphasis on that Leorio part (one panel in the manga), it would not show how much Gon and Kurapika improve in strength as well.

I really did not find it a big deal like others make it out. It did not ruin canon at all, because it showed that they all had grown stronger by the gate. Which afterall is the entire point, not to show how strong Leorio is (a character who appears in less arcs than Hisoka). No offence Leorio fans, but his real big moment is KO'ing Ging.

The 2011 series in my humble opinion has not at all damaged the series canon, instead it's paid tribute to it and shows Madhouses affection for the manga source material in every episode. Watching the Heaven's Arena arc, you can see how much love these people have for Hunter x Hunter, the 99 series did not give me that same feeling, rather the opposite, it made me feel like they didnt respect HxH and wanted it to be something else.

Feel free to provide a rebuttal :)

So why is your opinion better than the majority's? Not just the uninformed masses - i'm talking about the critics.

Quality isn't determined by quantity. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good though it can be.
Avatar is popular but it's really because of the special effects which are admittedly good. But the storyline is recycled and crap.

Then again, I ask: why not start with the deathmatch? Why bother with all the other stuff? There was no way out because Leorio messed up. It's ridiculous that you claim the entire purpose of the phase is to pit people in a team against each other. How, in any case, would that make a phase centered around teamwork inconsistent? People work together in teams, you know, both in real life and (conceivably) in the world of HxH. Sometimes people will go up against each other; sometimes there will be mutiny; but most of the time teams work together for the same concerted purpose and testing whether candidates work well in a team isn't in any way unreasonable.

Because then they would have plenty of time to take the long route. The point of the fights against the prison taskmasters was to stall the applicants for
as long as possible. The point isn't to pit a team against itself. The point as I said before is to weed out none but the very best. And pitting a team
against each itself is one way to do just that. You might think that because five people are needed before the first door even opens that it's the exam's
way of showing that team work is necessary to win but at the same time it is the path of majority's choice. The path is filled with voting stations
which are designed to waste time with arguing. So then they should work together, right? Well that's the trap of majority's choice. The voting stations
are created so that division is just about guaranteed. Take the left or right maze test. Kurapika decided that right was the right choice because people
naturally choose left and he figured Lippo knew that. But it was also equally likely that Lippo knew that people would know that and left could have
been the better choice (since they went right it's impossible to tell) in any case there's no real way to tell which is the correct path. So it ends
up being what the majority decides. But a question like is going to make people second guess themselves and when that happens there
will be disagreement in the voting. More disagreement equals more tension in the group. Do this enough times and by the time they reach
the last door before picking the short or long route and they'll want to fight each other.

It's simple. You're grasping at straws. The battleship fillers are NOT inconsistent with the Hunter Exam. I get it: you hate it because it's filler. Just say it, then. No need to put up a facade.
No, I hate it because it's mediocre filler at best. I'm not putting up a facade I don't think it fits in with the rest of the exam.

---------- Post added at 06:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:54 PM ----------

That's what some people aren't getting. For example even Pokemon had that washed out look in the 90's. The 99' anime didn't do it because it was darker but it was just part of the times.

How does it mess up canon? Nothing about the Canary flashback ruins anything and Kurapica meeting his nen master we definitely happened at some point
I don't think he was referring to the Canary flashback specifically, but to other instances of the 2011 adaptation messing up canon. Like the Test Gate part, or (arguably?) Killua's heart scene.
Cinnibar got it. As I said before I LIKED the Canary flashback. Though I wish they made what's his name (dude with mustache that smokes) the leader of the gang.

Who is "most of us"? People that dislike the 1999 series purely because it wasn't 100% faithful to the material? Why is the series so critically well regarded?
Most of us = People who aren't blinded with our love for HxH to see it's flaws and faults OR well read, intelligent people OR long-time HxH fans BEFORE the 1999 anime started. Take your pick.

We dislike it because it failed to capture the HxH spirit OR it messed up character and plot continuity OR it's just boringly cliche and slllooooowwww. Take your pick again.

The 1999 series was critically regarded because of the unique/revolutionized power concepts. Why do you think that the Yorknew arc was the most favorite of those who watched the 1999 series?

Fault as in adapting the manga in a specific way?
You want me to list the faults of the 1999 HxH series as a stand-alone anime (meaning, w/o relating it to the original source material)? Okay.

1) Slow and bad pacing. Nothing exciting happened after a month of its airing.
2) Character inconsistencies.
3) Plot inconsistencies.

I could elaborate but it would be a waste of time because you obviously are blind/refuse to see what is in front of you.

...what comedy? The room swaps? I bet you just skipped right through it coz it wasn't in the manga.
I was not aware that this filler was supposed to be deep and dramatic. I might have watched a different battleship filler. For the record, I enjoyed it because it's a break from the "drama" the 1999 series is soo fond of and of course, the hoyay! That said, I don't regard it as a "quality" filler.

I actually watched the 1999 series 4 times. However, I only watched it all the way once! The next 3 times, I lasted until the end of Hunter exam and then fast forwarded them to watch on certain parts that I like. Just so you know, I give a fair chance on all anime I watch by braving it until the 25th episode (6 months of watching). That's how boring the old hxh anime is. Also, I take great offense when biased people like you accused me of something they themselves are guilty of.

Since we are on the topic of the testing gate, I'd just like to say something on the matter.

Hmm... I don't remember this. Need to watch the start of Heaven's arena arc. I might have been distracted by the Gon-Killua interaction.

As a Leorio fan, I was disappointed that he was not able to open the gate by himself in tank top and showing his arms (where's my fanservice?). Of course, his big moment was punching Ging but he was fully clothed there... <--- pervert

I was also a bit upset about the gates, but I have to admit that I oversaw that conversation. Could you please redirect me chapter and minute?

I think he's talking about the time where Gon is going to fight the first random guy. Killua says something along the lines of "You passed through the Verification Door, didn't you? Well, so you just have to..." With the rest of the phrase being something like "Push him with all of your strenght!" that is revealed a little bit later.

The pacing is no reason. They actually dragged it very much, so they had lotsa time to put in everybody opening the Gates. Just shorten the training, wtf! And because of those training, the Canary part felt too rushed. I'll try to make my version of pacing in this ep later.
The conversation in Heavens' Arena is far-fetched. Some may think Killua is talking about Gon&co. opening the Gates. He might think that Gon was powerful enough to open it by himself (and he's actually right in the manga, while in the anime it seems that even opening them togethers is a big power-up huh).
I agree, mostly Madhouse has done a great work, I luv 2011 anime much better than the 1999 one, but this flaw is what I cannot forgive for such a great piece. (+sushi T_T but that was definitely the pacing reason. Though... They could put the beginning of the second exam (till opening the gates) in ep 5 and end with like "what trial is awaiting now...?". Then the sushi would fit perfectly. I'll try my repacing on episodes 5&6 as well =3)

At the end of the day, what's done is done. I don't think anyone can make a reasonable arguement as to how the Sushi and Gate stuff ruined canon, but feel free to try, we have ages til next episode might as well have a discussion right?

Whoops, long-ish post ahead. Oh well.

Killua was made to be cold and distance ( trying to clone him as Hiei 2.0) with made up inner conflicts that were never part if manga Killua's character: guilt ridden by his background and a struggle to suppress his killer urges. That is not added layers in case thats what you are thinkin, that's a total change of the character's core. Not to mention 1999's character revision is corny and cliche as hell.

A simple, fun and revealing ball game in the manga that showed us how Gon and killua deal with the same event is utterly ruined by some chick and focused shifted to whitewash Killua's family. The message 1999 sold to me was: Oh kids, don't do bad things or else the underworld police will get you. How the chick got on the ship is already a huge holes in how Hunter association is run.
Killua's portrayal was what made me not watch the 1999 adaptation, because it was so different from the manga. I nearly stopped watching after the first phase of the exam because Killua turned into some broody, emo kid who happens to have bombs with him. Why would he have bombs with him? I don't get this, because (as far as I have watched, which isn't much) this is the only episode where we see him carrying bombs. He is an assassin. He shouldn't need loud and flashy stuff like bombs because he's supposed to be stealthy. It could work as a distraction and easy escape route, I suppose, but given his skills and Rhythm Echo he shouldn't need such distractions and escape routes.

Then I tried to give it another go, so I watched the Anita filler. I don't know why, but I was amused with the Anita filler even though I was annoyed with Killua's characterizations. Despite that small unfound amusement, I don't like Killua already being made into a good guy. I was genuinely, sincerely surprised with the results of the last phase of the Hunter Exam when I read the manga. If I watched the 1999 adaptation, I don't think I would have been surprised at all, because I already know he's just some troubled, misunderstood kid. Unlike in the manga, where we don't really go in depth with him until the last phase of the exam. The ball game ruined this for me, because not knowing anything about Killua except on the superficial level is vital for the surprise. I seriously wasn't sure if Killua could be trusted at that point in the manga.

Now that I think about it, one thing I would have liked Madhouse to do would be Killua telling Gon during the first phase that he (Killua) and Hisoka are alike. It's not a big thing, and I can do without the change, but that line is what made me unsure if Killua is an okay person in the manga. (Admittedly, the 50-hour stuck-in-a-room filler would have probably dispersed my doubts about Killua too if I watched the 2011 adaptation first. Which is why that one line about him and Hisoka being alike should have been in the anime, because it really did linger in my mind for a few chapters, thus my doubt.)

As for the heart scene, I don't know what's the big deal. Just because he didn't crush it or because it was hidden inside the rag? He killed Jones by ripping his heart out and not by any other matter and that's the main idea.
I think the heart scene was done excellently in the 2011 series, which is why I said it is arguable that it didn't mess up canon. It depends on how someone interprets 'messing up canon' - messing up what actually happened in the manga, or messing up the intent or main idea? I was confused when I first watched the heart scene since I read the manga first, but I really liked it as a substitute. I'd even say I like it better than how it was done in the manga because I always interpreted Killua as more cheeky than badass. Not that Killua isn't badass. I already know he's badass, which is why I tend to look at the other aspects of him as a character.

Him drawing out the moment, dangling the heart in front of the enemy, and then returning the heart after Jones is dead is mocking, yet still cruel and awesome. It's one of the changes that I really like in the 2011 anime.

True, the point was that they all got stronger. But I liked how the manga showed Leorio opening the gate on his own. I suppose what made me like it is because it showed Leorio, as an individual, getting stronger (and not just all of them getting stronger together). It was at that point while I was reading that I wondered what Leorio could do on his own because he mostly got far during the Hunter Exam through other people, even if indirectly (Gon revealed the pigs' weakness in the second phase, allowed all of them to pass Trick Tower in the third, and successfully took Ponzu's tag in the fourth. Killua's actions guaranteed him a license because he killed someone.) We know Leorio is capable, but seeing him open the gate on his own kind of reinforces the idea back to me after seeing him pass the exam like he did. This is more on the interpretation of the scene in the manga than actually clashing with the intent of canon, I suppose?

I admit, I just like seeing Leorio being awesome. Him KO'ing Ging is awesome but that's still a long way from now, so I was really looking forward to seeing him push the gates.

Admittedly, a lot of my beefs with the adaptations (characterizations and changing events) are based on how the manga impressed me as a reader and how I interpreted the manga as I read it for the first time. So with the 2011 adaptation, we can probably say that it stays true to the intent of the scenes of the manga. It just didn't leave the same impression with me. But, while I still want a few changes, I can let those slide because experiencing HxH through different media will leave different impressions because of how the story is presented (like the heart scene, for example).

The problem with the 1999 series, for me, is that it really ruined the characterizations, and this isn't just about how you interpret the characters anymore. They are presenting wholly different characters, really. At least the 2011 series is more faithful. It's not 100% faithful, but it's a better adaptation overall because Madhouse knows what it's working with. I don't think you really get that feeling when you watch the 1999 series.

Good fillers are ones that doesnt contradict characterizations, background, how the world and its system work, while padding things out. The 1999 series's stretching a dialogue or an idea or two is fine. But the director of 1999 series attempted to revision the canon, incorporating his visions (tend to be formulated and conventional) by altering canon events and themes.
So your problem is that it "attempted to revision the canon."

No, I agree that it wasn't done particularly well. Understand where they were coming from though. Up to that point, Killua's character was nonsensical. The audience is supposed to somehow reconcile his murdering tendencies with his otherwise banal nature. Worse, the interaction he had with the other characters was rather limited. Something was needed to fill the gap. Regrettably, the director chose to make a split personality the scapegoat. Plus the cop-out with the chick's dad being a bad guy.

The good thing is that this episode is largely severable from the rest of the series. Most of Killua's character development occurs after the Zoldyck arc anyway, in the form of his interaction with Gon. They don't run with the schizo theme afterwards so that's good.

The whole shipwreck filler is not only cheesy, but you get ooc moment like Illumi and Hisoka helping others (isn't that sweet kids?)
Alternatively, Illumi could just leave the ship be and the thing gets sucked into the whirlpool and everyone dies. Hisoka helping Gon is nothing out of the ordinary.

Illumi fighting Gon... Errr
Concede. Thankfully Illumi never appears again save for a brief appearance in Yorkshin.

The three cripples are changed into normal people who faked their disability. Why? No idea. Oh since they rewrote the characters so the danger of Nen baptism is gone. And 1999's revisioning looks stupid.
Censorship, I guess. The Kastro fight disappeared too.

A quiet and lovely vacation to whale island is changed into more emo hiei2.0 drama - Killua and the bear. I actually forgot about this horrible filler and thought of rewatching this part in animation, only to be disgusted by it and shut the damn video off.
I didn't care too much for the episode. I didn't think it was bad, or good, but it had some meaning behind it. Whale island is an excellent place to explore the differences between Gon and Killua's world. It's where Gon was born. Mito's there. I'm just gonna leave it at that.

Two or three of the above are enough for me to find 1999 series unrewatchabe
Considering the fact that most of the bad episodes are severable that is a harsh position to take. On the other hand, I consider the 2011 Hunter Exam utterly unwatchable with the butchered music direction (making the entire thing absurd and hard to take seriously), and helium-happy baby Gon which is pervasive throughout.

Oh and your bitter attack of 'toddlers' just came off so stupid as obviously it's not.
Well it's obviously targeted to kids. Just like Harry Potter is targeted to kids. What's the best way to cater something to your target audience? You allow them to relate to it by making the main character similar in some aspects to your audience. This makes the whole aspirational thing easier to do.

We dislike it because it failed to capture the HxH spirit OR it messed up character and plot continuity OR it's just boringly cliche and slllooooowwww. Take your pick again.
It has its own spirit. Sometimes it contradicts the tone of the manga. So what?

The 1999 series was critically regarded because of the unique/revolutionized power concepts. Why do you think that the Yorknew arc was the most favorite of those who watched the 1999 series?
It was critically regarded because presumably, it was good on the whole. If the beginning was shit you would think that would drag down the score a little, yes? If you actually bothered searching up reviews, you would realize that the "power concepts" is only a small part.

You want me to list the faults of the 1999 HxH series as a stand-alone anime (meaning, w/o relating it to the original source material)? Okay.

1) Slow and bad pacing. Nothing exciting happened after a month of its airing.

I simply recognize quality when I see it. When I first watched the 1999 series, do you think there was any bias at all? Why would there be? I'd never even heard of HxH before.

Didn't you read what Tonpa said? The majority choices were just a trap.
That you're supposed to fight your way through.

[quoteabout the battleship filler, it would have been ok if they hadn't shown the characters in a ridiculous way.

and aside from showing the characters in that way, there was something more stupid in that filler, it was Illume helping Kurapika at the end!! why would an assassin do such a thing??[/QUOTE]

It's just humor. And illumi helped Kurapika so the damn ship wouldn't sink and take everyone down with it.

Any one would know that Illume was Piloting the ship so it wouldn't sink, but I wasn't talking about that, I was talking about this:

Why would Illume help Kurapika to stay alive?

Censorship, I guess. The Kastro fight disappeared too.
And that means a mature show. Kiddy 2011 still made them cripples.

Considering the fact that most of the bad episodes are severable that is a harsh position to take. You mean you don't like OST or the sound direction itself? I think both were great and perfectly fitting for Exam arc.
Well, the old Gon was like 'person A', absolutely elusive and dry. Not to mention that he was just a total goodie-two shoes.

Well it's obviously targeted to kids. Just like Harry Potter is targeted to kids. What's the best way to cater something to your target audience? You allow them to relate to it by making the main character similar in some aspects to your audience. This makes the whole aspirational thing easier to do.
I partially agree. But you're talking not only about the 2011 anime. 1999 is absolutely the same in this aspect. On the other hand, HxH in comparison to other shounen manga is very mature. There is not only cruelty, some twists are too complicated for kids.

It has its own spirit. Sometimes it contradicts the tone of the manga. So what?
The thing is that we love HunterxHunter and want to see it. Not some Furuhashi's fanfiction.

So if it's as utterly shit as you say, why is it held in such high esteem by critics and watchers alike?
The most love 1999's anime for Yorkshin arc. Hunter Exam is said to be absolutely boring (not that I disagree when talking about 1999).
And yeah, some actually prefer FMA over Brotherhood. I wouldn't be surprised if you do as well.

I simply recognize quality when I see it. When I first watched the 1999 series, do you think there was any bias at all? Why would there be? I'd never even heard of HxH before.
And now you're biassed towards 2011. Great.
Not only you don't care for canon, you take 1999 as the ideal.

Hm, I thought that was the point? I don't understand what 'gap' needs to be filled when you're not supposed to understand Killua until later. Limited interaction was intended just for that. Also, Killua wasn't interested in interacting with others except Gon anyway, so there's also that. At least, that was how I saw it. But since you said that several episodes were severable from the series, including this one, I guess that doesn't matter then? But having several severable episodes is a bit off-putting in my opinion, especially when said episodes are placed in the beginning of the series.

Oh, but you reminded me something. I remember now. It's the schizo split personality thing in the episode that amused me. It was so off that I just, I dunno, thought that the best way to react to it was to be amused with the change. :teehee

Music can be jarring sometimes, yes. But only because of placement, perhaps? I think the OST itself is okay, but how the music is used sometimes isn't. But when it's used well, it has a lot of impact for me.

But helium-happy baby Gon? What?

Well it's obviously targeted to kids. Just like Harry Potter is targeted to kids. What's the best way to cater something to your target audience? It's either I don't understand what you're saying or... okay, I really just don't understand what you're saying with the bolded part. How did the 2011 adaptation "make the main character similar in some aspects to the audience"? That they made Gon kiddy? But isn't he already a kid since the beginning? Er... could you elaborate this please? I want to understand where this is coming from.

And it has been said that HxH is misleading. You would think it's a story that you can let kids read. It's not. The same should go for the anime.

It has its own spirit. Sometimes it contradicts the tone of the manga. So what?

So if it's as utterly shit as you say, why is it held in such high esteem by critics and watchers alike?
I haven't watched even half of the 1999 adaptation, but here's what I think, based on what others have said.

It's good and enjoyable as a standalone. It's alright, even awesome, as an anime. But now that we have a more faithful adaptation (2011), you get to see the faults in the 1999 adaptation with regards to adapting the manga. So, as an adaptation, it's not as good as 2011. But as a standalone or as its own interpretation of the manga, it's good. There will be people who don't like that interpretation though, perhaps because they have their own, or because it is not how Togashi intended the manga to be interpreted as. The latter is probably the reason for your so what? question because 1999 is supposed to be an adaptation. So if the spirit contradicts the manga, well, then it's not that good of an adaptation now is it?

In my honest opinion, everything before and after Yorknew in the 99' series is a sloppy mess. People have already explained why. There are parts I like but, once I saw it a second time it doesn't hod up. Don't care what critics say. Yorknew was directed wonderfully, high production values, atmosphere, music etc. Then came Greed Island which was crap. Hopefully the 2011 series can change my mind since I don't regularly read the manga.

While the 99' series will hold a place in my anime heart for introducing me to Hunter x Hunter I prefer the new series. If you think it's the best anime ever go ahead but it's obvious fans of the manga prefer the series closer to the manga they love. I felt the same way with Fullmetal Alchemist.

^ Agreed with you mostly on this. I think Zevil Island and the Zoldyck stuff is still pretty good though (I even like the battleship filler), but Yorknew was where most of my fond memories for 1999 come from. I enjoyed the Greed Island OVA's but only because I wasn't able to read the manga at the time. The production values on them are sad, and I can't wait to see Greed Island the most after NGL as the arc I want to see animated most in the 2011 series.

I really can't wait till AFTER the Hisoka fight, amusingly enough (though I think they're gonna kick so much ass with it!). I Just really hope we get a Kite flashback at whale island. I always found Kite as important to Gon's characterization. He is someone Gon looks up to since he saved his life and introduced him to the idea of Hunting and who his father really was. It's Kite (and how he glorifies Ging) that shapes Gon's desire to go find his father and pursue a career as a hunter. At this point lack of Kite (not the sushi or testing gate) that's my only gripe with the increasingly awesome 2011 adaptation.

Also I wish we'd get a release date on the HxH movie thats apparently coming our say sometime...Do you guys think its coming out this year? I guess so, I hope it has Nen battles in it whatever it is, and features plenty of Hisoka and or Leorio.

Whoops, long-ish post ahead. Oh well.

Do you remember in which episode killua was carrying bombs?

If there are nen battles i don't think we'll see Leorio fight:(.I wonder if it won't be a film about Ging and Kite after his apparition in the anime. But seriously Leorio and Kurapika need some good fillers in the ants arc. i will be happy even if they do some little and coherent fillers arc with them during this arc.For example an arc of his average joe's life and his training and also how he heard the news of Gon vs Pitou.

I want to see Kaito flashback as well but I don't see it as crucial. I mean, it is a flashback, it can be inserted whenever you want (they'd better not insert it just befor meeting Kaito tho) The thing is that the sushi ant the Gate scenes cannot be changed anymore =/
I'm really looking forward to HxH movie. It's gonna be great.
