Guys calm yourselves down, getting a little too heated here. I'm shocked that people are still discussing the Leorio omission. Was it really that big a deal? In my opinion the only badass Leorio moment that absolutely can not be changed is a certain punch to a certain persons face in a certain recent story arc. Everything else isn't really of consequence as it's not overly important to the plot. Sure they could've shown more of his strong side, but for one reason or another they decided against that. Nothing we can do about it. Regardless of that I am enjoying Leorio's portrayal here. In comparison to the 99 version he is a much more intelligent and savvy character much more like the manga, just thus far his strength has been downplayed somewhat, his courage and bravery however has not. Lets not forget this guy took Hisoka head on, while Kurapika the supposed 'badass' ran away. Leorio has been portrayed as a strong character, but in a different sense.

I caught the episode late too (last night) and was taken aback by how the discussion get marginized.  As a manga fan, I feel a bit guilty to admit that I didn't remember the Leorio's part at all, and foolishly thought he was so well-drawn (the best among the four main heroes), street smart and cool in this episode, only to come here and found there's actually omission. :P   Yup, I found Leorio in this episode cool and 'useful'. <3

I enjoyed this episode for setting up what's to come, though it's definitely another of those Korean outsourced one that has a cheap feel to it (rather obvious, there's a certain Korean team that always has the awkward, thicker lines, the angular mouth, and you knew right away it's one they wanted to save budget on).

I disagree there's pacing problem (omission isn't pacing). This Korean team's episode in the past had really bad pacing problem, but not this one. It flowed pretty smoothly and the unfolding of the events, every character moves into his/her places...are depicted fine.  Like I said, as someone who's never read the manga nor like me who forgot the details of the manga, I didn't notice anything off at all.   I agree with the speculation that Madhouse wanted to highlight a street smart Leorio who's in charged...it's definitely different from the comic relief idiot the 99 series depicted.

mr.sticky, I do enjoyed your posts regularly, but in my opinion you did blow it way out of proportion.  You don't like what Madhouse did,  we get it,  we hear it the first time.  Maybe his characterization just doesn't bother  other people as much in the grand scheme of things, you don't need repeat so many times to convince all of us and get defensive and emotional.  The way you magnified the Leorio flawed characterization, then went on to hammered it again and again,  has turn the episode discussion threads to an one-issue thread. How about start another thread that's titled "My complain on Madhouse's portrayal of Leorio" instead?

There's a whole lot of shades of differences between chorus singing drones and rabid bashing fanboys.

Actually my main complaint has been the treatment of Yorknew in general so far---Kurapika's scenes are dragged out. Killua, Gon, and Leorio are rushed.
I have had to repeat myself for several reasons. One reason is that people misunderstand and make assumptions about my arguments. Another is that
although it may not look it to you I've been arguing about different stuff. How the scene affects the character of Leorio is a different argument
than why Madhouse did not include the scene in the first place. The reason I've been getting "defensive and emotional" is that when I'm trying
to explain myself and I'm not getting through to people. The reason that the discussion has been "marginalized" is because people don't
get the difference between splitting hairs and the straw that broke the camel's back. They think "Oh you're just some obsessed Leorio fan boy.
Why are you complaining over something so trivial?" They can't seem to understand that this isn't the first time Madhouse has done this
and that Yorknew has had the most changes from the manga. That is ultimately what is bothering me. So let me clarify my argument.

The reason I'm upset is not simply that Leorio's arm wrestling was omitted but rather how ALL of Leorio's GAR scenes have been
omitted and more so than that the decreased accuracy that has been plaguing the Yorknew Arc thus far. I find that while Kurapika
and the troupe are indeed the main focus in Volumes 8-9 after Whale Island, Madhouse has given too much attention to Kurapika
and the spiders. That is in the sense that I have felt Killua, Gon and Leorio have been almost neglected so far. I did not feel
this way when I read the manga for Volumes 8-9. This is due to the omissions by Madhouse which are due to the overall
poor pacing of 39-46. I say poor pacing because Kurapika's scenes have been slower than usual. We've been getting 1.5
chapter instead of 2 chapter pacing and Episode 39 in particular threw a curveball for the pacing. I think what the problem
may be is that Madhouse is trying too hard to "build up" to the Kurapika vs Uvogin fight and while I actually to appreciate
the drama that this build up will cause I don't care for the sacrifices it has made.

Caught the episode late. And woah, did I miss the party.

I'll just leave my two cents here.

And I happen to think that Leorio is from the school of hard knocks.
He's got the switchblade. He threatened an old lady with a two by four.
He challenged Hisoka. He seems to know a lot about the mafia and what not.
Sure he could have done his "research" before. But Leorio seems pretty
at home in Yorknew. Gon is the tourist with talent. Kurapika is the stranger but he's
able to calculate what to do. And Killua is the professional.
Leorio's combat traits are rarely exhibited. Even though he has experience fighting, he's always shown to be outclassed when it comes to the battle junkies in this series. He's got street smarts for sure and Madhouse isn't making him out to be delicate. He knows how to handle a knife and can handle his own against many. But he's a lover, not a fighter. Hotheaded and impulsive, but ultimately soft-hearted.
These descriptions are probably the most accurate I have ever seen.

Haha, me too! Though I have said in the past that Yorkshin arc is a bit fuzzy to me at the moment, so I easily forget details like this.

I think the ultimate problem here is that Yorkshin arc will be a difficult arc to adapt. There are many reasons why. For one, it's one of the fan favorites, so there's going to be expectations here - especially since '99 fans regarded this arc as a masterpiece. Secondly, pacing is crucial. You have to end each episode on a good note because it will affect the pacing of the other episodes. And lastly, this arc is the only arc (thus far) where Kurapika gets to shine.

I think a lot of us are going to be disappointed with some changes because of the impressions they leave. You're not sure if anime-only watchers will get the full scope of Leorio's character as in the manga, and you will be worried if this will go on in the future episodes.

One of the problems Madhouse seems to be having is balance. Sometimes the music seems off and it doesn't balance the mood of the scene. And sometimes they focus on one particular character or detail when they could have/should have focused on another. Pacing is also a balance-issue. We always, somehow, find something off in each or every other episode; whether it be the music, the pacing, the character focus, or hey maybe even the budget distribution for each episode. What have you. Yorkshin is Kurapika-centered. More than anything, it is essential for Madhouse to strike a good balance between focusing on Kurapika and the troupe, and focusing on the other characters.

Overall, I think Madhouse is doing a very good job considering what manga they are adapting. It's not perfect, but it's better than what I would have expected.

As for this episode, I have already said that I forgot they omitted a Leorio scene. Still, I thought the episode flowed nicely, and Leorio still came off as street-savvy. We're not getting the whole scope of Leorio's character, but the episode was okay overall despite this. I don't think Madhouse 'dislikes' Leorio so much as they are just focusing on the other characters. And like others have said, let's wait until Zepile gets here. Don't worry. They'll show him. They can't not show him.

Or else Gon and Killua wouldn't be able to escape.

On a completely unrelated note, I am disappointed that I missed the debate. I need to watch the episodes earlier. Ugh.

For the record I am disappointed with BOTH Yorknew adaptations for different reasons

1999:

The problem I had was that Nippon was in too much a hurry for Kurapika to a badass. Hell they even took what was a one panel fight really with Kurapika vs Hisoka
into this big grand battle--or at least they attempted to. The problem I have with this is that Kurapika's transformation into a badass is supposed to be surprising
in the manga. We are supposed to think...Wait...when did Kurapika become a badass all of a sudden? Not...Kurapika to the rescue!
I also did not care for the dry and glum feel of Yorknew and especially of the Phantom Troupe in the 99. They just felt way too serious.
It was like the 99 was trying to make it the anime Godfather or something. Yes, the manga is serious too...but not in the same way.
Even with the increased pacing I felt bored with the 99 Yorknew.

The problem I have the 2011 is that while thankfully it took it's time to bring back Kurapika but once it did so it sacrificed Gon, Killua and Leorio's role
who while they may not be major are still important in this arc. While the Phantom Troupe has been more exciting in the Madhouse version due to
their more enjoyable personalities and I for one have been enjoying Kurapika's anger management issues here (though I would have preferred
less red tint eyes) the action still isn't as exhilarating as the manga---namely the car chase. Yes, it's not THAT exciting in the manga either
but I was hoping for more out of Madhouse. I think even some well selected sound effects could make a huge difference.

What I would like to see is Madhouse step it down a notch or two with Kurapika and step it up with Gon, Killua and Leorio.

Phew. After suffering from a bad bout of depression for three weeks, I caught up on Hunter 2011 as well as watched the entirety of Yorkshin in 1999. I gotta say, I agree with sticky here, though my reasons are a bit different.

For one thing, I don't think the pacing is an issue. In the manga and the first anime, Kurapika became the main hero (or in the case of Shinobi's reviews) heroine. All three mediums pretty much reflect this. Now this may be an annoyance to people like me (and no I am not trying to insinuate that sticky feels this way.), who do not care for Kurapika much. I like yorkshin as much as the next Hunter fan, but the series shines when it is about Gon and Killua. /opinion. That being said, I like Leorio and feel like his scenes shouldn't be shafted be it for time or any other reason. Although Koujina and his crew didn't promise us this with the new anime, what was implicitly insinuated is that we'll get a product that sticks a bit closer to the manga. I mean, why the hell not? MH has 30 volumes to work with, and apparently they at least talk to Togashi more than Nippon did. If they're willing to cut 2 minutes of Leorio screen time, what's next? Entire characters? Entire chapters? This is a slippery slope, and I for one do not care for it. That being said, although it irratates me that they'd cut that, it didn't break the episode for me. I agree with mr.sticky that the characters should be represented as the manga presented them, because there really isn't a reason for them NOT to. Leorio having street smarts instead of brawn isn't a big deal in the long run, but if Togashi included said scene in the manga, I think the anime should at least follow suit.

Now as I said, the pacing up until now has been fine IMO, but it worries me greatly that they're going to (possibly) speed through several chapters. I sorta liked the Zepile stuff because it was so very anti-shounen. Like I really enjoyed the different methods of spotting fakes and the terms of apprasial given in those chapters. It makes the HXH world seem like a mirror of our own, with good, bad, ugly and beyond. I find it interesting as well that Zepile really describes Gon the best when he says 'this kid is like an abyss'. It's exactly what Gon becomes in the ants arc, not to mention Zepile himself is a pretty fun guy. I really hope the episode titles are off or wrong, or MH has some kind of master plan, since unlike popo-san, I do not believe that if they skip the material they will revisit it post-yorkshin. In any case, we'll see.

This really goes back to what I said in the 1999 vs 2011 thread. Neither adaptation is perfect, and even if we argue about this for years the only thing we'll lose is time. That being said, I think everyone has made valid points about how the last episode was handled, but lets not forget it was one episode out of many more. I am a little bit disappointed in MH's handling of the arc so far, but that's more to do with some of the choices they've made in omissions than fillers. Like it or not, this arc is the Spider's show. Gon, Killua and Leorio get to shine a bit later in the arc, but Yorkshin is mostly about Kurapika and The PT. I don't mind them padding the troupe out, nor do I mind minor omissions here and there (since it's actually much more rampant in anime adaptions nowadays than you'd think.), but when these omissions start to modify character personalites and interactions, then that's a bad, bad, bad thing. I mean it's exactly why 1999's adaptation is merely 'The loosely related adaptation of the manga named Hunter X Hunter'. 2011 is slipping down that path too, and I really hope Koujina can stop that from happening.

Either way there's still the manga.

In any case, sticky, you're right to be upset and you've got a supporter here. (Brofist).

Yorknew has had the most changes from the manga.
No, you're wrong. Hunter Exam and Zoldycks' arc actually had no less.

And the pacing in YS is imo really great, I'd even say it has a potential to be better than manga.

Kite is in the beginning. Haven't seen him yet. Anything is possible. So again I hope they don't skip Zepile.
(...)
Because apparently having criticisms here is a crime.
Really? So, seems that not being bothered by this is a crime for you? If you are not bothered with this you then don't have criticism?

While you've a point...You're over reacting. A lot. As a HUGE manga fan I care more about the plot and coherence than showcasing a character or not. More if it's Leorio, but that's me.
I think most people here agrees with you, it was a mistake but it wasn't a huge one to get passionate about it. Not YET at least.

I was bothered more for the change of activity rather than this omission. It was weird and as heron said, felt out of place. (While I don't think that character was fitting ANYWHERE xD)
The reason I've been getting "defensive and emotional" is that when I'm trying to explain myself and I'm not getting through to people.
Not every one will agree with you.

And let me clarify, I realize Madhouse did this before. They omitted Kite for god sake and I still think it's not that important considering how they're going with the plot.
We are not blind fan boys who give 10/10 to everything they get. We got our opinion and we can criticize and tell when someone miss' up something or not that we see important and we give our honest opinion. We don't go crazy on everything or boycott the whole thing for one minor change that's so unimportant when there are bigger things to notice

What I also liked about the Yorkshin arc was the worldbuilding. And for me, a lot of the worldbuilding happened when Zepile came, or when Gon and co. are walking around the city and searching for items or people. In other words, when Kurapika wasn't around. Now don't get me wrong. I like Kurapika as a character. But in the manga, whenever Gon and co. are just walking around, you just sort of get this... 'feel' for the city, so to speak. I don't know if I can explain it well, but for me, I can almost say that reading the Yorkshin arc made me feel like the city was alive. There are people. There are auctions. There are mafias and car chases and wanted signs for dangerous people.

I like Kurapika as much as the next guy. But this is the one thing I want Madhouse to do right.

If I don't feel that Yorkshin is alive, that Yorkshin is its own city with its own people and auctions and happenings, then I am going to be disappointed. Maybe I'm the only one who felt this way while reading the manga. But if the anime makes Yorkshin look like 'some random place to put the characters in' instead of a real place in the HxH universe... then I will be disappointed, and I will be wary of how they are going to handle other worldbuilding opportunities.

Given that, I will wait until the arc progresses further before forming my opinion about this. Zepile isn't here yet, after all.

On a different note, I am neither excited nor apprehensive of the next episode. It will most likely have a bigger budget, but I'm holding out opinions until I watch it. I hope it will be as amazing as the scene really is.

And is no one going to comment about Shalnark in a suit? Shalnark. In a suit.

I am obviously fond of this particular Troupe member. <3

Considering the kinds of weirdos you find in old games, like WWF Wrestlemania for Sega Genesis, I think he does fit there, but maybe it's just me really o.õ

I could understand the change in the gate opening scene. OK, It's so hard for Leorio to open the second gate in a month or something, but this time it's really different! I mean, can't Leorio beat someone in arm wrestling? will it really make him look too powerful to be...true? C'mon Madhouse! Leorio is a Hunter! He can easily beat someone in arm wrestling! there's really no excuse for Madhouse this time! they just fucked up the whole scene for no real reason! and that what made me upset!

Wow, I only recently noticed that the colors of Hatsu types on the official ntv's HxH site is:
Red for Enhancement
Purple for Transmutation
Blue for Conjuration
Green for Manipulation
Yellow/Orange for Emission
Thus making a full color circle when combined with the Hatsu hexagon! Well, for exception that the color for Specialization is currently unknown, but I believe it's gonna be Cyan.
I think that helps understand the individuality of each person's Hatsu as well as compatibility with adjacent types. How do you guys see it?

Well, I think this time the change had a much more solid reason than the Gate opening one. Imo the anime version of underground arm-wrestling makes more sense than a sudden change from arm-wrestling to hide&seek. I mean come on, why would he even bring them to this competition in the first place? Now Leorio being beast and opening two Gates in a month wasn't that much extraordinary for HxH world, so it's strange imo that they left this out. I was much more disappointed with that scene than with the current one.

Well, my guess is those guys were looking for someone to do the job of capturing the Phantom Troupe and they were testing Leoreo to see if they were up to it or not.

You misunderstand. It is not that people such as yourself disagree with me and don't care as much as I do. It's that because you don't care as much as I do
you think that I'm just "overreacting" about just the Leorio omission. When actually I've said multiple times before that the Leorio omission is just the tip
of the iceberg. Yet whenever I say that you refuse to listen and instead you focus only on my being upset about Leorio's omission.
Even now you are being condescending by telling me about the Kite omission. I've been watching this series from the beginning.
I've read all the manga. I know about the changes. I have complained before but I'm complaining especially now because I feel
as if Madhouse is getting too liberal with the changes. But no. All you are going to get out of this is "WHY WON'T MR. STICKY JUST
SHUT UP AND STOP BEING SO BUTT HURT ABOUT THE LEORIO OMISSION!? " Sure you can say Leorio's omission isn't a big deal
on a standalone basis. But I'm looking at it from the basis of ALL the changes so far in Yorknew. Leorio not arm wrestling by itself
is yes, a minor change. However when Madhouse has been doing this to Leorio since Zolydyck Arc it starts to become a bigger deal.

But anyhow I'm gonna make a new thread for this. Hopefully I can better explain my thoughts there.

You see, I don't get how Leorio could have foreseen something like that. Dunno why, but the anime version of this seemed more plausible to me. It was definitely possible to predict that some never-losing arm-wrestling kid urban legend should lure out the 'big fish' that would take them to the arm-wrestling or any power challenge with higher stakes. While demonstrating strength and waiting for some big boss to bring them to the underground auction that doesn't involve strength was kinda relying on luck. Yeah, it was mentioned that the ring probably was set up for another purpose, plus hide&seek with Spiders is definitely something that involves strength. But I think that was really unpredictable, or at least not so obvious for a viewer. It's just I've always felt like their success in luring out the 'big fish' was kinda random.

I'm going to change the subject to just a little something that I like about Madhouse's Gon. His hair. I really like the way his hair is drawn in the current anime. It actually looks like hair instead of those immobile spikes piercing out of Gon's scalp. I like how Madhouse shows his hair actually moving. That's all :D

I like how his hair just poofs like that. Same with Killua's. I prefer his current hair over what I've seen from the '99 version.

Overall, everyone's hair looks great. I didn't even mind Hisoka's wavy hair when it's down. :)

To be fair, 1999's character design of Gon merely reflected Togashi's art style at the time. He really did look like that till about the middle of Greed Island. Togashi himself even commented that his art style changed dramatically during each of the hiatuses. MH's adaption reflects the most recent Gon design, which is fresh in our minds; hense our appreciation of it more.

Agreed. The hair does look better.

Though I think young Ging was especially better.
