Well, for lovers I would add there should be "vow gifts" that they can chose from at the beginning which can only used with the two of them. Think of romantic gifts/vows like rings, roses, a poem, etc and each has a different "couple ability" from which the lovers profit each night.
As for Masons, I would just add Masons roles once the Masons have reached a certain number of Members. Like once there are 4-5 Masons one Mason can be upgraded to Mason Treasurer who has a second vote to vote with in day votings or once there are 5-6 Masons one Mason becomes the Mason Bodyguard who can only protect other Masons and so on. It's not complicated and it makes sense that an organization would organize itself and its member over time.
I thought about the return role of Jesus. He's the sole role which does not die on the first kill and revives a couple days later, but stays dead once he is killed for the 2nd time. I played Jesus once and it was pretty fun to act as an "important role" to make sure the mafia kills you on the first night basically wasting their kill and confirming me as Jesus. So I thought why not make use of that simple revive role for one or two more roles but each with their own twist to it?
So here are my thoughts regarding those new roles:
Problem I have with this role is the Kill ability. Obviously I would not want the Ghul to return to the game as that would just make him an obvious lynch again target for the Townies and is quite boring. I liked the idea of a reviving Jesus with Vengeful Townie ability mix and the Mafia fits its bill the best. I have two solutions for this problem:
Basically making the kill unstoppable as to prevent the Protecting and Blocking roles to prevent this now known Kill in the next night phase. However that again makes the trouble of a hider claiming he is just hiding or a Bulletproof Townie lamenting that his ability is now useless against this type of Mafia. Then again the Mafia had to DIE for that ability to tricker so I think it is fair game.
This setting has the way of avoiding that protecting and blocking townie roles fear that there is a Mafia role which can ignore all of their effects. However it still adds strategy value to the Mafia play as with the Ghul death they gain the ability to kill a 2nd time in a night of their choosing. Plus the Mafia can be sure that there will be some blockign roles that might "waste" their ability on the Ghul despite the Ghul not going for a nightly stroll to kill somebody, giving the other Mafias more room to work freely. If they make sure to kill blocking and protector roles before using the Ghul they have the 2nd kill in for sure. If not, using the Ghul is risky but also makes sure that the townies never quite known when exactly the Ghul will strike for its last time.
I like both versions, the super-kill Ghul version is very powerful but fast-paced whereas the night-kill-choice Ghul is still very useful as Mafia can freely decide when to use the 2nd kill but can be blocked by the Townies if luck is on their side.
I also got this idea of a 3rd role Hider who is a killer. I got this idea after reading Dungeon Meshi ch.40:
I really liked this idea of a "hidden kill" by a cowardly creature which kills to survive the game. Also the whole Illusion thing keeping the latest Victim "in the game" makes the Shapeshifter a "one couple role" like the two lovers which is pretty unique. It is basically a Hider who ends up killing whoever he hides behind so the Shapeshifter gotta decide if just staying one person through-out the game, hoping his real self never gets killed till he, his illusion and two other roles are left in the game. Or he keeps hiding and killing, always hoping that his target will not be killed by anybody else as he would then die too or that his target is a hider or that his real self just got blocked by a prostitute or a doc protected his victim, etc. But due his win condition someday he has to kill, even if all Mafias got killed the game won't end till the Townies found the Shapeshifter among them.
Basically the Shapeshifter is a weak killer as his kill only works if his target is not killed by anybody else plus it can still be blocked like a normal kill, making it the weakest killer in the game. The Illusion however is what is so cool about this role: It works that way that the Host does NOT tell the Victim that it is dead so that the Victim keeps writing and voting normally the following days unaware of its death so that the "illusion" of the killed Victim still being "alive" is perfect. In other words the Shapeshifter cannot control the Illusion properly as it is a perfect Illusion of the killed so it is possible that the Illusion votes to lynch the Shapeshifter in a day vote which is hilarious to think about! XD
Plus it makes being dead less annoying as the Victim of a Shapeshifter can continue to play the game and then finds out a couple days later that under normal circumstances he would have died on Night 1 already but was only allowed to keep playing the game because he played the role of an "illusion" without beng aware of it. I just love that! I wanna see the comments when people realize that the person they talked with, argued with and voted with turned out to be dead since 3 or 4 phases and that that now means ANOTHER one of them is dead and "playing" as an Illusion of the Shapeshifter without knowing it!!! It's just so cool to think about it! XD
Seriously, I'd love to see the Shapeshifter in a game as soon as possible. It is not OP as its kill depends on its hide and since his Illusion can be destroyed too, revealing that there is a Shapeshifter in the crowd. However its unique Illusion ability makes it an enjoyable role for both the killer and the victim as the killer has now a "Partner" to win the game with, till he decides he wants or needs a new one, and the Victim who keeps playing the game instead of dying and having to leave the game. Plus this makes it really hilarious if the Shapeshifter happens to kill Jesus as Jesus would suddenly "return" 2 day phases later, revealing that the "First Jesus" had died on a night phase before and now both the Jesus player and everybody else will be like "whhhhaaaat?". Basically Jesus would "die" and "return" on the same day due the Shapeshifter role hiding the kill and the Jesus role returning the Player back to life nonetheless. XD
Mafia Ghoul: Like bomb it's the only mafia role that can cause extra kills, but bomb can be dealt with by defuser and mafia can't exactly pick who dies with it while ghoul can both pick his target and not be blocked unless we take option 1 or 3 for him. Making it unblockable is too strong I feel, but if he comes back people will just know to block him. If he can pick the night he comes back to do his kill it'd still be tricky since despite his death he can still read the mafia pad(though unsure how big of a problem that is). It's a more interactive bomb I guess, but I don't really see the similarity with Jesus revival since he just gets a night and doesn't get to experience the fun feeling of living again.
So it feels like a stronger/better version of Mafia Bomb, don't you think?
Shapeshifter sounds interesting, but a lot less fun than Mentor I feel. If given the choice everyone would rather be Mentor, since the person they pick becomes their helper and they actively talk at night. Are the Illusions a Townie role or a 3rd party role, since that needs to be defined like the Mentee. The hiding aspect is pretty good to survive nights against the mafia, especially in games with 2 mafia groups this is probably the best 3rd party for such games with lots of night kills. This would give people something better than serial killer to use in such games. So aside from feeling like a much less fun Mentor and not feeling like it'd be as much fun to play as you said, I like it. Though hiding behind the same person for more than 1 night doesn't sound like a good idea, since he can't win without killing players, so won't it just be a 1-night delayed serial killer with somewhat decent night protection? The more time you waste hiding behind the same guy and not killing people the less likely the win chances are, unless both mafia and town are killing each other very nicely.
That's because he doesn't "respawn" in the same sense as Jesus. He just comes back during a night to do a kill and back to the grave.
I wouldn't say it's as simple as just a hybrid of poisoner and hider.
As for buffing lovers and masons, lovers need to have an incentive to play together. If a host gives 2 lovers good roles and they still betray each other instead of working together then all that's left is changing their win condition to only winning as lovers. No other kind of buff will help their problems, as their success when working together depends on a combination of planning, luck and what roles the host gave them.
Masons are very weak townie roles yeah, but right now I'm not sure how to buff them other than what James suggested, making it so every 2nd recruited Mason keeps their role or gets something like Bodyguard to protect the recruiter.
Hmhm, good critics. Okay, here are some changes so that the Mafia Ghul really is like a Mafia Jesus.
Basically a free-orientated bomb which gets stronger if lynched. That way the Mafia Ghul can stay in-game as an "evil Jesus" and it makes roles like Vigilante Townie or Cowboy stronger as they could take down a Mafia Ghul without risking two townie deaths. And since he can chose who to kill if he has enough information then that means he could pick docs and dets outta those who voted for him, so the town might want to keep him alive as last mafia before lynching him for good. The idea is that besides Jesus, there is a returning Mafia role who can openly talk about being Mafia and who the townies try to coax some infos out and where the townies wonder why the open known Mafia voted for this guy - was it to hide a fellow Mafia buddy or is he trying to get another townie killed? Sure the townies could avoid such a situation by killing him with their day killing roles if they have any which is why I wondered if perhaps the sentence "If killed by other means, the Ghoul takes his killer down with him." should be added to it as that would reduce his advantage from two to one kill but will still sting when killing him for good. What you think Gry? Does this sound more like a Jesus Bomb role to you, fitting for Mafia games?
Now about the Shapeshifter. If him being a killing Hider/Mentor sounds weak/boring how about a killing Hider/Recruiting Mason who wins by turning half of the player amount into Illusions?
This way the Shapeshifter remains a greater threat as it is unlikely we find out about him very quickly in the first days/nights till one of his Illusions shatters. Since Illusions don't know they are Illusions I thought a secondary role wasn't needed but perhaps it could serve as explanation for the Host who needs to keep a list on who is and who isn't an Illusion.
Does this sound more exciting? Imagine the Shapeshifter finally dies after like 4-5 nights and suddenly 4-5 people drop dead with him, that would be such an massacre especially if the targets happen to be a mix of other townies/mafias/3rd roles. This way we have a 3rd party Recruiting Mason who has a very vulnerable fellowship as his Illusions by the simplest actions done to them. Also this would be unique as we don't have a recruiting Mason for 3rd Roles yet and due the Illusion explanation it is not too strong.

Also, Gry, you should change the 3 days rule from the Apprentice/Insane Apprentice to 2 days to be more fair for the player. Also to make the Martyr more attractive and enjoyable to play, the Martyr should PASS his vote to the one he protected so that the protected has now two votes till he or she dies one way or another. This way it will be cool if the Martyr can't be sure if he protects a townie or mafia, the townies can't be sure if the guy with two votes is a townie or a mafia and the mafia can't be sure if it is wise to let the 2 vote townie live because they need to focus on other players. So in other words, a [Martyr Vote] gets added to the player to use as 2nd vote. I also think the bodyguard should have such a feature but unlike Martyr it is only once usable, a [Bodyguard Vote]. The difference is due the many day actions whereas lynching happens only once per day thus making the death by choice more rare than with a bodyguard who just happens to die at the right time most of the time.

Thanks, Evil.^^
You know, I just realized that with the Mafia Ghoul in-game, there could be the possibility of a "draw". That is if there are only two townies and the already revived Mafia Ghoul in-game and the two townies vote for him and after death he kills both of them, leaving zero players in-game. XD

I like the idea of someone you know to be mafia but don't necessarily want to lynch. But I think him killing 2 of the ones voting him is a bit strong. 1 kill of choice already sounds very strong, considering he increases the mafia number after death by 1 again. Feel like this role needs some more thinking, but could be a good Jesus counterpart for mafias and more interactive mafia bomb.
The shapeshifter sounds interesting, and this could be statistically the 3rd party role with the highest chance to win. Keeping dead players alive while their numbers contribute to him is great. Not sure if he needs any other adjustments, but I'd definitely try and test him out in a game.
I've been thinking that Apprentice may be too harsh yeah. You think making it 2 days instead of 3 would make it better?
And Mortician, even with the change that lets it combo with Martyr/Prosecutor and protect from Assassin it's still not very fun. I don't really understand your vote power suggestion though, nor see how it fits Martyr/Bodyguard and makes them better to play. Also, since Martyr can change his target as many times as he wants in a day phase wouldn't that make the Martyr vote impossible to put into practice? Unless he can give a 2nd vote to everyone.
Yeah, one death by choice should be plenty to keep most townies from wanting to kill the Ghoul yet. I'd be fine with that change.
Yeah, I taught so too. Plus I think he is not OP as long as the host remembers to keep track of who is and who isn't an Illusion so that he knows when to "kill" those illusions the moment somebody uses an action on them. So the shapeshifter is still beatable but scary as his death late in the game might mean lots of players suddenly dropping out and nobody but the shapeshifter knows who's real and alive and who's an illusion. I'd like to see him in a game. Heck, I'd love to be that role someday!
Yeah, 2 days are more fair than 3 given the high kill count some nights. And it gives a chance to use said role if it has an active action.
Well, the Martyr/Bodyguard vote should only go to the one they protected after they died, so the Host only has to know who those two finally died for and give the protected one the extra vote. The idea is that those two basically leave behind a "last will" so to speak which gets used by the person they protected to vote with in one of the coming days. That way the role would be worth more as it adds their vote to still be able to be used in the game even if they died. Maybe the Bodyguard doesn't need it as his role is quite important given the night can be unpredictable but the Martyr should have that extra so that he is more ready to die knowing or at least hoping that a townie got his 2nd vote to vote with against the mafia. And ofc the mafia would love to have that extra vote, especially late in the game when voting gets tight.
Ah you meant an extra vote for their target after they die. Not sure if that makes these two roles any more appealing though. We can try out that Apprentice change in one of the next games.
Maybe not more appealing but it would give both more reward and risk to when they decide who to die for as neither day action martyr nor night action bodyguard can truly know if the one they protect is a townie and not mafiascum/3rd party bastard or even if it is a townie that he will a) live long enough to make use of that 2nd vote/extra vote or b) ends up killing townie with it due his own knowledge being limited. And I think that little extra at reward/risk factor with that vote being handed over after death could make it a bit easier for Martyr and Bodyguard to be willing to die for somebody.
I'm glad for the Apprentice changes.
We didn't had yet an insane apprentice following a mafia yet and becoming a mafia member, right? Kinda wanna see that happening even if it is rare.
Mafia Apprentice
Basically an unskilled member who has to watch a certain member get so many kills (not necessarily in a row) to become the same role...strongman,poisoner,escort,etc....
Also could become a boss if present boss makes Xamount of kills and dies.
A succession...
Mafia Apprentice
Basically an unskilled member who has to watch a certain member get so many kills (not necessarily in a row) to become the same role...strongman,poisoner,escort,etc....
Also could become a boss if present boss makes Xamount of kills and dies.
A succession...
I like this idea. Problem I could see with it is that if the Mafia choses a strong/rather strong role for the Apprentice to take over like Janitor, Assassin, Poisoner,Escort then the Mafia can gain incredible strength last part of the game. Two Day kill roles in one Mafia? Damn strong. Two Janitors who keep killing roles which remain hidden for townies but open for mafia? Damn strong. Two Escorts blocking docs and dets? Damn strong.
Maybe rather than becoming the same role, the role should take over after the death of the Mafia role. The succession part only. So basically the Mafia Apprentice has to chose a role at the beginning of the game he wants to succeed, ofc it has to be a role one of his partners in crime has. If that person happens to die someday in the future he takes over the role. If he dies before that person, well, sucks to be him. That way we can prevent having two strong roles at the same time for the mafia and we can prevent that the mafia gets crippled too quickly if one or two of their strong roles happen to die too early in the game.

Got the time to work on gnut's Mafia Apprentice Idea:
This Version makes the Apprentice a safe "Copy-cat" so that the Mafia won't lose an important or good role too soon or before using its ability. Like this time with Empi dying before he made use of his Poison ability on Night 1. XD
This way Mafia have a back-up in case of their important role like Janitor, Mafia Poisoner, etc dying too soon. Plus it makes it possible to use stuff like Mafia Poisoner twice, once the original role holder than the replacement.
The 2nd Version makes the Apprentice into a whatever-he-wants-to-become-role with the condition that he has to kill twice, like a townie apprentice has to follow somebody twice, to get that role. The nice part about this is that the whole Mafia can debate which role the Mafia Apprentice should take/is most useful for the team as well as that the Apprentice needs to kill twice so he won't get the role too soon (like if the Mafia Apprentice had taken Empi in this game he would be a Mafia Poisoner right away on Night 1, whereas with this version he still has to kill in night 1 and 2 to be a mafia poisoner on night 3) which seems more fair to townies. I also added a third sentence about his kill ability though I am not sure if that makes the Mafia Apprentice too under-powered or if it makes him just rightly powered given he can take ANY Mafia role so there could be two Mafia Janitors on Night 3. Hmmmm, maybe I should add "expect roes that are already taken by his teammates" into the first sentence after all...
What you guys think?
Also I thought up a new Version of that Commissar idea I had a long time ago, I think of making him a "passive investigator":
Basically a Townie role who's dependent on detectives to work properly as collector. I got this idea because it happens quite often that dets die before telling who they investigated or what results they got. Once all dets are dead he is basically a normal townie. Also Mafia would want this guy dead as he knows the amount of dets in the game, meaning it is harder to fake being a det plus he knows who was investigated on unlike the mafia so they can't fake it with "I investigated Demon on night 2" as the Commissar could call out on that lie. Also the role could be interesting as he has no idea who investigated who, so until he finds out who det did what investigation all he got are guilty and innocent verdicts that can mean anything! However, he still has them to post them in case of too many dets dying too soon, leaving the townies clueless which is already good in itself especially if two dets investigated the same person and got two different results or two same ones as that might give a clue who is sane/insane/paranoid/naive.
Also remember the idea with the "Old Cat Lady" role? It was pretty well-liked yet never made it into the game, I think of giving it a little change that might make it more adaptable to the game:
Basically this makes the OCL a passive investigator with similarities to the BK but has no block chance as she is just an observer. Once her neighborhood is dead she is basically a normal townie. Also this way she can sort of provide some early warning system against the Shapeshifter if she hears that her neighborhood got blocked, protected and killed yet nobody from her neighborhood showed up dead next day meaning one of her 3-5 people is an illusion but she doesn't know who exactly it is. The Old Cat Lady was too strong as she knew on who actions were used or who used what action basically already telling her what roles these people had. This way she is more of an "area of effect" investigator who's purpose in the game is to keep an eye on her neighborhood and try to find out what roles her neighbors have and if they are townies or mafia or third party.
Btw, when can we expect the Shapeshifter in a game? And is Mafia Ghul really out as possible Mafia Jesus version?
That's also way too strong. Problem here is that he can confirm two roles of two other townies very quickly, resulting in three confirmed townies. I like the broad idea of something with that function, but not like that.
Hm, maybe we could make it that the Commissar only receives a single random report from one of the detectives? Like he gets told that a player was found innocent/guilty. Or he gets told that somebody was investigated but not the result.
As for the Mafia Apprentice version, should he get the 100% kill ability if we go for three night kills or the 50% one? Because in the Fire Emblem game we had an Unskilled Maifa who could have leveled up into a cool role but failed like twice or even thrice in a row to kill anybody and all he needed was just one kill. So if we do three nights I'd rather give the Mafia Apprentice the normal kill chance like any other mafia member (expect the unskilled one) especially as that means the Janitor has to sit tight if the Mafia got both roles. Sounds more fair to me. What I like most about that version though is that the others, more veteran players, can give input which role they deem more useful for the team to win whereas the other version would leave it all up to the player himself who might rather want a cool role than a useful but boring one.
Yes, you did. It has yet to enter the game though. Hope it enters the game together with Shapeshifter and Old Cat Lady. Three roles at once, one for Mafia, third party and townies.^^

So, I got another idea for a Mafia role that only works if certain townie roles are in-game: The Mafia Recruiter.
I think we had very little games where a Traitor or Sleeper was in it and even if in most games those roles hardly got to shine to their full potential as the mafia just has no means to look for those possible recruits or even know they are in-game. So the Mafia Recruiter will fill that gap and give the Mafia a strategic value which is to look to increase their numbers instead of only and just reducing the townie numbers.
I got two versions of the Mafia Recruiter, tell me which sounds more plausible:
Basically this version allows the MR to look for people who could be criminals like the mafia themselves. However it isn't easy finding such guys as they are usually distrusting so with the three player selection the MR still has to keep checking night and again till he lands a hit and even then he needs to find out which one of the three is the real deal. Also here it would take two nights even after finding the sleeper/traitor, one to find the very right one and the other to recruit him. It gonna take much longer in-game though due the size of our games but this role would allow the mafia a fair and decent chance to find the role.
This version makes the MR a hunter who could recruit all three recruit-able roles even the naive traitor and he recruits them right away when finding them unlike the other version, however he can only chose one target per night to reduce his effectiveness. He is basically like a Scout who looks for a hot woman to become a model, just in this case it is a criminal looking for possible criminals to join their fray.
Does the Mafia Recruiter sounds good? We got add a 4th Traitor role/recruit-able role so that it could be used more often. Also this role is already worth it even if there is only one role to be recruited as it takes time for the MR to look for such roles so as long as the recruit-able role or the MR won't die there is a chance for the mafia to increase their numbers. Maybe I should add that he becomes a normal Mafia member in case of there being no more recruit-able roles in the game?
James if mafia tries to kill a traitor, they are recruited.
I think the same applies to sleeper....
Me and lambu won a couple games back because we recruited daws late game after losing vandred early game.
We were trying to kill daws xD
If we do add the Mafia Recruiter then maybe we can add one or two more Traitor roles? Like this:
So the Insane Traitor is basically a PG Traitor which will make the overall Traitor role more fun as no Traitor can know for certain if he is sane, insane, naive or paranoid till much later in the game. A Mafai Recruiter could this way be killed by the Insane Traitor before/while recruiting him
The Paranoid Traitor is basically a PG with endless ammo till all Mafias are dead (as Mafia has always an night action with the kill action) then he becomes a Serial Killer. Since he is a passive killer, his kill is first before the one who tries to kill him. Seemed more fair to me as he cannot chose his targets till all mafias are dead. Ofc we can change that and just keep the kill with the normal coin toss. Maybe that is for the best else he is basically a BP as well. If played well this Traitor has a chance of winning a game on his own.
With the MR the normal aka sane Traitor and naive Traitor need some changes too to fit in as well.
Naive Traitor is perfect the way it is. No changes needed. XD
The Sane Traitor should be more of a reward if recruited. This way the hosts don't need to give the Mafia strong roles from the get-go like Janitor or Poisoner or Assassin and instead gives them Mafia Apprentice and/or Mafia Recruiter who can becomes those roles over time/get those roles into the team by recruiting a Sane Traitor. This way we might get other type of games where Mafia won't start with a Janitor and all mafia players know that a Janitor is a big must because knowing the roles of the dead unlike the townies is a big advantage and very much needed for faking roles.
James if mafia tries to kill a traitor, they are recruited.
I think the same applies to sleeper....
Me and lambu won a couple games back because we recruited daws late game after losing vandred early game.
We were trying to kill daws xD
I know, but the idea is to have an active Mafia role who is looking for said roles on his own. Either in the first version where he looks for a bunch of people and then finds somebody and the mafia discuss if they should "kill" them or not or later or in the second version where he recruits on his own aka "kill" people each night but not really killing them just checking if they can be recruited or not.
