Re: One Piece Mega Convo Thread
i have a small question that may seem a little "stupid" to most onepiece readers or fans... but its rather needed for me to keep reading one piece...
basically right now im at : v15_ch129 (as in finished reading it) and i dont know... one piece seems rather "childish/nothing too attracting/leaving cliffhangers for me to be that interested in continuing to read it"
Actually, it's pretty hard for me to answer that question which I wouldn't call a stupid or bashing one. I just hope I won't get on the wrong track in this posting nor spoil to much.
Well. The first reason why I'm more into One Piece than any other WSJ manga is simply that I've read it first and for the longest time. I've started reading it with the Ann's version of Romance Dawn - and it hitted me pretty unexpectedly very straight... I fell in love with this kind of storytelling because it was "complete" in my eyes. I've read 3x3 Eyes, Ranma and D.N.A.² before, started watching NGE, Dragonball, AIKa and Slayers animes, had a glimpse on several other ... "ideas" like the German manga "Crewman³".
But I've always returned to One Piece - even if it was translated horribly into German (they were always confused about the bounties

).
Why? Well, as I stated, it's simply the one manga that has had everything I wanted to have for a good
manga story:
- interesting characters
- nitpicker infos, recurring characters - without getting annoyed by them. They stay in the background and come back into the story when they're needed.
- nice kind of humor - even if it's childish/japanese bound
- it's a looooooong story
- absolutely no pairings but some minor ones in the story's absolute background, even if fanboys/fangirls don't want to hear that (whenever I want one of those, I start to reread Ranma or Inuyasha or start to watch Macross)
Furthermore, it's no big deal for Oda to create secrets which have to be unveiled as the story continues. It's like those secrets have already been there in the story - all the time, and I as a reader am allowed to uncover them bit by bit together with the main characters.
If I had to compare this to Naruto, well... to me Kishimoto creates his secrets (especially the ones around the Uchiha) out of plotholes. I'm rereading all of "my" mangas pretty often, and those Sharingans and their extended "cheat" modes are every single time coming out of ... well, nothing. And this is
very rare in One Piece. Even if you compare it to the Devil Fruit powers - up to chapter 550 there are only about 60 revealed. Compared to the nameless ninja, pulling crazy jutsus and shinigami and espada with their zanpakuto releases... I don't know, but I think Oda's holding back with overpowered characters - and that's what's better at One Piece than the other two mangas. IMO.
Oh, and (to finally answer you question I guess

) what I like most is the fact that Oda's evading the death of characters that were either great or poor villains and having that possibility that they
might come back. Whenever a character that was given a little background dies it has a meaning. I absolutely agree on his opinion that once Luffy smashes his opponents' dreams it's no longer necessary to kill them off since this would put an end to this now dead character. And that's the very mature part of One Piece IMO that beats this "manga stories are about killing people thus create masses of gunmen on rampage" attitude that's spread here in Germany.
Well... enough babbling... The choice is yours: The "childy like" humor within One Piece won't cease but continue and become even more various. That was, is and hopefully will always be a part of One Piece - without it, it simply won't be Eiichiro Oda's One Piece.
The prolonged arcs won't stop either - in fact, you'll see that the story will get more complex since Oda easily falls back on details from veeeery old chapters. One Piece is one huge adventure.
