Umm, first of all, please don't throw stuff into a discussion so bluntly but at least describe what you mean and what conclusion you draw from it.

Here, in chapter 97, page 15 is the scene I think you had in mind (see, no one can be sure -.-'), but this scene as it says is luck vs. curse. No fate invloved as far as I can see.
The reason I differ between thise two terms is because of Blackbeards believe in fate which is opposed to Luffys believe in dreams.

Re: One Piece Mega Convo Thread

I absolutely agree that it seems like the tension is mounting for the BB and SH Pirates to face off. But both crews are still incomplete, I'm not sure how we can assume who will face who beyond BB and Luffy. I'm glad we all have different opinions, and have no intention of putting anyone down for their assumptions. I do think the BB and SH will face off in the ultimate battle... I'm gonna stick with my main point. From Romance Dawn Oda has stated Luffy want's to be a Peace Man and to emulate Shanks.
Most of all he wants to fight Morgania and have adventures. Up til now the ultimate Morgania and "stereotypical pirate" would be BB and his crew. Also excited to see both crews grow and develop. This is only the start of their rivalry..............

I didn't know that one piece was a documentary. I just saw Usain Bolt use "soru".

Re: One Piece Mega Convo Thread

i just had a thought...there may not have to be a luffy vs someone battle for pk... considering that this is onepiece, it may not be as predictable as that...instead it may be a triple threat match kinda thing or a fatal four way... luffy vs bb vs ace vs supernova... wud be an epic match imo and not so predictable. cuz atm bb vs luffy is far too predictable and we all know how odas writing is.

and also. i confused as to why tashigi (woman that stays with smoker) bares so much resemblance as the girl that died in zoros past. and they both use swords. although zoro thought she died, could it be that she didnt realy die and tashigi is realy her but lost her memories?

Re: One Piece Mega Convo Thread

1) Final battle may not even be against a pirate. Could be against marines for all we know, and though I expect Blackbeard I'm not going to rule out the possibility Smoker appears or WG charges in with Poseidon or something like that.

2) Nah, I prefer the similarity idea. Mainly because resurrecting Kuina, after we've seen a funeral + her sword passed on + father's regrets + Zoro's pain it would be a bit silly for Tashigi to be like "Oh, btw I'm Kuina."

It wasn't like she died by vanishing and then Zoro left immediately after. Zoro spent quite some time training with Kuina's father and we do see a body (http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/5/16/)

Re: One Piece Mega Convo Thread

i have a small question that may seem a little "stupid" to most onepiece readers or fans... but its rather needed for me to keep reading one piece...
basically right now im at : v15_ch129 (as in finished reading it) and i dont know... one piece seems rather "childish/nothing too attracting/leaving cliffhangers for me to be that interested in continuing to read it"
now what do i mean by childish? well, if i'd compare it to naruto or bleach (simply because those are probablly the other 2 biggest shounen around) i think that naruto is on another level in terms of "not being childish" simply since characters (main ones) actually die and get hurt in it... whereas bleach is more like onepiece i suppose, but still for some reason bleach gets me more into "damn i wanna know whats going to happen" and in terms of interests it draws me more to it..
as for one piece... i really liked the "beginning" of the story with how shanks gives up his right arm to save luffy, which made me think "good it wont be too childish" , also i do like the entire "devil fruit main attraction" and the pirates age theme but then came so many lovey dovey plots.. and buggy sometimes is just pissing me off/too ridiculous in terms of WAYYY TOO CHILDISH
seriously, im not trying to bash one piece or compare it to anything... the purpose of this post is me wanting to hear opinions of fans of one piece/ppl that read it till the latest chapter, for them to tell me if it "gets better" in a way from what i expect from one piece so far...
HUGE THANKS to anyone that will help me out here and tell me if there will be some rather more intriguing plot/more me wanting to actually read it and not feel as tho its too childish and not appealing / catching on the fact that u actually wanna keep going

Re: One Piece Mega Convo Thread

Well Leifman, without really going into the latest things and saying "Keep reading it's awesome" I'll ask you:

Did you enjoy the Arlong arc? If you were not a fan of that, I doubt you'll find the rest of the manga as enjoyable. To me Arlong arc was the turning point, before that I was a bit "meh" with the series also. Some say that it was the "Crocodile Arc" for them, which you've only really just begun so I could say continue through that, but it's not a short arc.

I see the opinion that One Piece is childish thrown around a lot. Usually I put it down to the art style, though a few arcs are pretty childish. However, that's the appeal of it to me. Why should a good story require 5 deaths a volume and physics you can comprehend easily? One Piece still has tragedy, if you didn't really feel it in Nami's Arlong Arc, then perhaps you're looking for something much more mature, in which case I'm not sure why Bleach or Naruto appeal.

All mangas have intriguing plot the further they carry on, so I can be a person to say "Keep reading, it gets better". However, though that is true if you don't like something too much to begin with no point in continuing it through. I mean, I did for mangas such as School Rumble and Dragon Quest: Dai's adventure and I really shouldn't have.

Still, remember there is a reason why One Piece is the most popular manga in Japan.

Also, characters die in Naruto? Sure, once every few volumes they might kill off a secondary character like Sandaime or Itachi and a lot of villains get killed, but villains die in most mangas. One Piece does have a much more childish approach to battle and it's true no-one really appears to die outside of flashbacks, but I've never found this to detract from it.

Also also: One Piece gets much better at cliffhangers as time goes on. The only reason you might want to know what happens next in Bleach is because nothing ever happens in there chapters.

Not a stupid question, I didn't find you were bashing One Piece. On the other hand, I bash Bleach a lot =P

Re: One Piece Mega Convo Thread

I get hooked to One Piece since Zoro vs Mihawk battle, the first time i realize the potential of this manga. It is occasionally childish but the fun moment it makes topples everything. What good is a manga if it weren't enjoyable, and i do find One Piece VERY enjoyable... And to add more than that, One Piece doesn't need a timeskip like Naruto did. One Piece has way too much material to be told that what makes its epicness boundless, unlike the other too mass mangas.

I agree, I've always felt One Piece is greatly overlooked by alot of manga fans, it always seems to be about "naruto this" Bleach that", but hey thats exactly why MH exists to bring out the One piece fan in everyone, it sure helped me, reading about everyone praising OP here, made me pick it up and I fell in love instantly, so thank you MH ^^

Welcome to MH Fififi!

This arc is going be amazing as usually. The only arc I didn't really enjoy would be the Skypiea but Oda writes so much detail in the plot for the story, so I'll forgive him.

here in my country, people dont like one piece that much because of the art. but i love it because the story is so vast, the possibilities are endless.

naruto was ok in the beginning, then became corny and slow paced.

bleach is ok but it's too predictable and the fights are matched against powers that fit against one another.

Actually, it's pretty hard for me to answer that question which I wouldn't call a stupid or bashing one. I just hope I won't get on the wrong track in this posting nor spoil to much.

Well. The first reason why I'm more into One Piece than any other WSJ manga is simply that I've read it first and for the longest time. I've started reading it with the Ann's version of Romance Dawn - and it hitted me pretty unexpectedly very straight... I fell in love with this kind of storytelling because it was "complete" in my eyes. I've read 3x3 Eyes, Ranma and D.N.A.² before, started watching NGE, Dragonball, AIKa and Slayers animes, had a glimpse on several other ... "ideas" like the German manga "Crewman³".

But I've always returned to One Piece - even if it was translated horribly into German (they were always confused about the bounties :eyeroll).

Why? Well, as I stated, it's simply the one manga that has had everything I wanted to have for a good manga story:

  • interesting characters
  • nitpicker infos, recurring characters - without getting annoyed by them. They stay in the background and come back into the story when they're needed.
  • nice kind of humor - even if it's childish/japanese bound
  • it's a looooooong story
  • absolutely no pairings but some minor ones in the story's absolute background, even if fanboys/fangirls don't want to hear that (whenever I want one of those, I start to reread Ranma or Inuyasha or start to watch Macross)

Furthermore, it's no big deal for Oda to create secrets which have to be unveiled as the story continues. It's like those secrets have already been there in the story - all the time, and I as a reader am allowed to uncover them bit by bit together with the main characters.

If I had to compare this to Naruto, well... to me Kishimoto creates his secrets (especially the ones around the Uchiha) out of plotholes. I'm rereading all of "my" mangas pretty often, and those Sharingans and their extended "cheat" modes are every single time coming out of ... well, nothing. And this is very rare in One Piece. Even if you compare it to the Devil Fruit powers - up to chapter 550 there are only about 60 revealed. Compared to the nameless ninja, pulling crazy jutsus and shinigami and espada with their zanpakuto releases... I don't know, but I think Oda's holding back with overpowered characters - and that's what's better at One Piece than the other two mangas. IMO.

Oh, and (to finally answer you question I guess :)) what I like most is the fact that Oda's evading the death of characters that were either great or poor villains and having that possibility that they might come back. Whenever a character that was given a little background dies it has a meaning. I absolutely agree on his opinion that once Luffy smashes his opponents' dreams it's no longer necessary to kill them off since this would put an end to this now dead character. And that's the very mature part of One Piece IMO that beats this "manga stories are about killing people thus create masses of gunmen on rampage" attitude that's spread here in Germany.

Well... enough babbling... The choice is yours: The "childy like" humor within One Piece won't cease but continue and become even more various. That was, is and hopefully will always be a part of One Piece - without it, it simply won't be Eiichiro Oda's One Piece.

The prolonged arcs won't stop either - in fact, you'll see that the story will get more complex since Oda easily falls back on details from veeeery old chapters. One Piece is one huge adventure. :)

Re: One Piece Mega Convo Thread

To add on to deffkryz's awesome post:

I like One Piece because of its sense of novelty. Unlike Bleach, which re-uses plot devices and plot styles (the guy rescuing the girl; the reinforcements who arrive at the last minute), One Piece is unpredictable. It almost never follows the traditional manga formulas - for example (I hope this doesn't spoil), I expected the Enies Lobby fight to be several one-on-ones, but was pleasantly surprised by the switch-a-roos.

On the same token, One Piece's mangaverse is always big in the sense that you feel like there's always something more to be discovered/revealed. With Bleach, the Soul Society arc was its high point for me - since we were getting to know the world of Bleach everything was exciting and cool. But after that it quickly got stale since I felt like we had covered everything on the map (even if we didn't).

One Piece retains a sense of romantic mystery despite the fact that it's into its second decade of printing. Which is why I'll never get bored with One Piece.

I started to read OP when Luffy luffy was batteling Franky for the first time, so it was already epic by then.

When later I read the first chapters, it first seemed they were more childish, but I think that has to do with the way Oda likes to build up his story.
If you continue your readings, you will find a lot of references to earlier chapters (interesting ones), and the more you will learn about the 'whole' and the epic battles who are to come, you might actually start to love it! And also the drawing stile will evolve a little, which will make it look less 'childish'

PS: the most childisch character, the little tanuki-doctor, still has to appear?

Another thing that I love about OP, is the lack of plotholes, Oda keeps the story inline and it all snaps together like a epic puzzle filled with fruit and fighting >>

Re: One Piece Mega Convo Thread

That's my opinion about OP:
Although it's unpredictable about the way the story goes the end seems to very certain for most ppl: Luffy becomes Pirate King and finds out what the "One Piece" is. For some ppl this very certain fact seems to be the last pages of a book - if you read them in the beginning you _can_ throw it away.

The final goal in OP stays the same while Naruto switches. First "Naruto becoming Hokage" is the story's goal in the front stage. Then it's beating Orochimaru, then beating Akutski. Then a mix of all. Between there are training phases where Naruto is all about Naruto getting better. To me the Zabusa Arc is still the best.

I dont like Bleach that much because its like DB where its only like "I got 253252 power, you got 34534535 - I lose you win". Who has more raitsu or w/e it is called wins in Bleach. It's not improving your abilities but controlling his mass raitsu Ichigo has. For Naruto it's chakra but at least it's a bit about training and improving the way to use his abilities.

OP is about getting stronger by improving the own ability each charakter has. Those abilities arent based on the same. Zorro fights with swords based on mental steadyness and physical force while Luffy has a fruit power which he improves by the ability of the fruit itself and his force power. In the last chapter's there is Haki (force based on personal ambition) too. There are so many different force basis in OP which makes it very exciting for me. Dont want to spoiler there too much.

OP style compared to Naruto and Bleach is more childish. I mean you can hardly take a pirate ship with a lamb in the front serious.

But you know OP has no serious moral intention. OP has some parts where it gets serious. They are easy to find because on those Luffy gets serious too. But to say it with a small spoiler: Luffy would quit being a pirate if he would know what the One Piece is. So although the way to the One Piece is serious sometimes it only has a childish intention: To have fun on a treasure hunt.

Naruto and Bleach always claims that the final goal is a serious thing which you just cannot quit from because you like to - or in other words: Naruto/Ichigo dont even have the opportunity not to fight Akutski/Arrancar. When Luffy fights other ppl he choses it by his own opinion. Most of the time it's not a very rational one but an emotional.

Nethertheless it's all about taste and what you claim a story to be like.
