Now, I just thought of something. Luffy has in the past used combined gear 2 and 3 to fight. And it allowed him to fight at a higher level than either form would allow individually. It was reckless and caused him harm but it was effective. I am thinking that if this time around luffy uses gears 2, 3 and 4 together then he would perhaps be able to actually hold off the people there. And it would make him an actual giant while he fights. I am sure we will see the combination eventually, the issue is when. Perhaps, given what the form would imply, it would last a moment but it would be a moment where he could punch back at big mom.
Luffy's finisher vs Doffy was a combo of 3 and 4. no need for 2, as he is able to speed blitz Doffy in g4 alone, except if G2 will literally boost him by a lot, then it's pointless

As for fighting smoothie or katakuri, the guys are above cracker. If luffy could not win against cracker on his own then he definitely can't win against those. Smoothie and katakuri are big moms top liutenants, their position in the world is literally the same as marco/jozu or jack. They are monsters. Luffy can't win against them. At least not with anything we have seen yet.
I am sure they will have the same issues with cracker, if he can endlessly create hard ass biscuits. Like i have mentioned before, cracker could have easily foiled Bege's plan if he was here but he was taken out early. On his own cracker is a one man army with his own army.

I think infusing his bones and musles with air would make him too bouncy ? But I imagine it would give him a tremendous power boost

But in a sense, Gear 4 is a combination of Gear 3 and Gear 2, not only his speed increases but his power as well
I am not sure it would add to his bounciness. Gear 3 never made him bouncy after all. His gear 3 was just hard IIRC. I do think he would remain as bouncy as gear 4 though. But giant sized.

From what I can tell gear 4 effectively works as a combination of gear 2 and 3. It makes him less dense he can float as well (though gear 3 should also do that but it doesn't) and proper himself with his buttchecks IIRC. But it is not a combination of the two. The trick to gear 4 as we have seen it is how it is combined with haki. I assume he can inflate his muscles without adding haki but the effect is just not the same. If he adds the increased bloodflow from gear 2 and the size of gear 3 to his gear 4 muscles it should still result in a dramatic power increase though. But I do think such a move will be too much of a strain on him and last for moments. On the other hand, perhaps oda is saving this for kaido. That will be an even larger battle where luffy will fight the full might of a yonko alongside a force that could conceivably scratch them (presumably luffy, kidd, hawkins, bege, law, appoo and even urouge).

Hey, what's one thing we've learned about Oda? He doesn't wast a detail. There is no way that he'd have the Tamebako knocked off the venue if it wasn't going to play a part somewhere else. It may not blow up in Mama's face, but it still has a useful role somewhere.

Uh, I think aster meant when the Vinsmokes were still at the table and Sanji was directing them to save his friends.

I do have to wonder something. Even though he wants nothing to do with Germa, do you think that Sanji might get his own raid suit after this?

I think it's pretty possible and it would be really useful... but, I doubt Sanji would want it. It would be as he accepted all what his father did... everything for power, no matter the price. The only way I see Sanji using it is: During the combat, Reiju or Judge gives Sanji a spare suit, but he refuses and fight with his own power. After that, he is overpowered and in order to save Nami (Nanji got a hype in this arc) he accept the suit only this time. He'll win the fight, and promise he'll never will use it again.
Maybe in the future, Frank can make his own version for that. But it doesn't fit Sanji or the SH's that much. Would be an easy power-up.

Given that the manga was less than specific I am going to go with luffy just inflating his muscles more at that point. And what I am suggesting here is that luffy would do this combination against big mom. The combined effects of all his gears could actually be a reasonable way for luffy to actually cause harm to a yonko after all.

The idea behind G3 was to blow air into his muscles to make it bigger, so if he's calling out G3 then he's doing that, but if not, then he might be doing something else. I dont care, but if luffy is making younkou commander fly miles from on hits, then Big mom is taking a damage, logically she will be damaged.

Gear 3 is blowing air into his bones. Gear 4 is blowing air into his muscles. The chapter where luffy defeated doflamingo was not specific regarding which one he was doing for that final attack that ended doflamingo.

Well, the distance he was blown off is not much of an issue in itself. If luffy punches someone and that person offers no resistance (which ended up being what happened here given the circumstances) then that person is going to fly off into the distance regardless of who that is. Not to mention that cracker was specifically portrayed as a relatively frail fighter overall. With big mom it's the opposite scenario. She has been potrayed as a particularly bulky tank with astounding ability to resist damage. And she is a fighter that presumably stands above cracker. Her taking merely marginal damage from gear 4 is a very realistic possibility.

I get what you mean, but if you look at it this way, resistance or no resistance, Doffy was able to stop G3 effortlessly almost not moving an inch. Then with his guard up and Haki on his hands, G4 makes him fly clearly more than a mile, as I'm sure the palace is more than a mile away from "downtown". If luffy punches Mama with the same power and she doesn't cough up blood or anything then I truly believe oda might be writing himself into a ditch or maybe a new gear/power will be revealed. But still guys let's not sleep on G4.

To put things into perspective, Luffy's best Gear was Gear 2nd pre-skip and it even carried on into the New World to defeat all his enemies:
Pre-skip
  • Ennies Lobby
  • Thriller Bark
Post-skip
  • Fishman Island
  • Punk Hazard
So, for about what, 2.5 years, Gear 2nd has been enough to defeat all his opponents.

Now, Luffy's best Gear is 4th. The idea that his best Gear won't suffice to defeat his opponents is absurd. He's only been in the New World for what? 2 weeks and only used it twice, yet Gear 4th shouldn't be able to take down the Emperors? It's not like Luffy is going to have a Gear 5th when he's barely had the chance to flex or showcase Gear 4th..

Would be like expecting Luffy to have formed Gear 4th after defeating Lucci with Gear 2nd just so he could defeat Moriah; truth is we're likely going to rely more on Gear 4th for a good length of time before we see anything new if there's even a Gear 5th in the works.

If Gear 4th cannot hurt an Emperor and he's supposed to defeat an Emperor to be Pirate King, then I think the reader is being unrealistic. The reader does not want what they'd call "bullshit power-up"., but expect Gear 4th to be ineffective? With such a catch-22, the only possibility for any progression would be a Deus-ex-machina power-up which the reader paradoxically is against.

Fact at the end of the day is, Gear 4th is his strongest Gear just like Gear 2nd was, now he's facing the Emperors, it's only logical that it'd be able to hurt them with it.

Would be like literally expecting Oda to have Luffy develop a new Gear after just using Gear 2nd for 2 weeks to defeat future opponents; it just makes absolutely no sense.

Just for reference please watch this. (watching this again made me realize Doffy is stronger than cracker. feel free to @ me on this :) )
In terms of taking damage, yes. Doflamingo is one of the most durable characters in the whole series, while Cracked himself admitted to not be very resilient. Of course Cracker can create an endless army of biscuit soldiers, and that also counts as his strength.

yeah but Doffy has a long range devil fruit, so damaging cracker will be very easy for him. So in a fight, awakened Doffy will wreck cracker. not wreck as per se but Doffy will win

Cracker would be defeated immediately by Doflamingo due to his weakness. His biscuit soldier are full of holes which Doflamingo strings can penetrate.

CoA haki does nullify a paramecia's body, but only their body itself. It doesn't nullify strings or mucus because they're just products of Doffy and Trebol's DFs. CoA does make paramecia's like Luffy succeptible to conventional attacks.

Buggy is a special case. Some scenes it appears that just being cut reflexively activates his fruit (haki or not), splitting himself to avoid being cut. Sort of like how some logia users avoid CoA haki attacks by creating a 'hole' in their body, as with Whitebeard's stab against Aokiji. And then some scenes like the one with Luffy using him as a human shield against Mihawk seem to imply that he simply can't be killed by cutting- but I chalk that scene up to Rule of Funny and less as hard evidence his ability works one way or the other. Buggy's power is very inconsistent even among the confusing paramecia family tree.
It doesn't nullify. If you look at what is stated concerning Haki, it's never stated to nullify anything; only Kairoseki nullifies. It's just said to be able to touch the bodies of those who possess intangible bodies which also means counter. It doesn't even nullify the intangible body of a Logia, it just makes it interact-able.

In fact, note that it never states that Haki is the power to hurt, but the power to touch. You can't hurt something that you cannot touch or interact with like a solid.

Paramecia do not have fluid bodies, they all have a body, therefore, they can be interacted with and touched. Luffy has a body, it can be touched, so what is there for Armament Haki to interact with when he can already be interacted with? He can be hurt without Haki too. He was hurt by the giant kid in Punk Hazard and it's not like they have Haki.
Anytime a character is hurt in One Piece, they always state "OOF" or "AHHH" (along with various other exclamations) after being hit which proves Luffy was indeed hurt here.

When he hit Rob Lucci's Tekkai which is basically making his body hard (a blunt attack), Luffy was hurt, we see him groan in pain and this is void of Haki.

Franky also hurt Luffy without Haki; that is not an expression of the lack of pain.

What do Franky and Lucci have in common? Franky's fist is made of steel while Lucci's body became hard as steel. All it takes is an attack that is powerful enough, and Luffy would be hurt.

In fact, that is literally all Haki does, it just makes things harder, so it's easier to hurt Luffy. Luffy isn't immune to blunt attacks, he's just got a high resistance. No Paramecia requires Haki to be hurt, only Logia since they do not have tangible bodies.

If Luffy had hit Trebol without Haki, and hit his main body, he'd have been hurt.

Is there a Paramecia in One Piece who got hit and then one came to the conclusion that the attacker must be a Haki user? Not one, you'd only see this concerning Logia.

Luffy even says IF Trebol was a Logia (not a generalisation of all DF users), my attack should have hurt him, so the ability to touch the body of a Logia is specific to Logia. Paramecias already have tangible bodies to begin with; Robin also states the exact same thing and she limits it to Logia, not to DF users in general.

Buggy is not an exception. He can be hurt without Haki.

Buggy is immune to slashes regardless of being imbued with Haki, Luffy is highly resistant to blunt attacks except they're very powerful. The idea that Buggy can be hurt by a Haki imbued swords contradicts Shanks stating that no matter how many times he's sliced, he can't be killed because they're just about to take on Shiki in the New World who'd have a crew with proficient Haki users. Would be like you're implying indirectly that Shanks doesn't know about Armament Haki which wouldn't make sense.

Anyone good with japanese, i have a question... the opening line of the anime"wealth fame and power"... what are the chances that there are different words for the translation... for instance, can fame and knowledge be the same word by any chance??? just having a weird theory in my head.

Shueisha will reprint those Weekly Shonen Jump magazines that held One Piece and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood first chapters, in one pack for 900 yen on 12th August.

Credits to Greg, and Redon for posting it AP. As he suggests, for collectionists, a very good chance to obtain this hard stuff to get nowadays.

I doubt it. We only had that idea because we assumed Whitebeard was representative of each Yonko, but that wasn't the truth. Whitebeard was above everyone (fellow Emperors and Admirals) and more so, his ability played a huge role in why he was so formidable. It was the ability to destroy the world, much less people.

Very unlikely that the Emperors can just easily defeat Admirals, it will be a hell of a fight. Only thing the Emperors really have is the fact that they have Kings Hak, besides that, I don't see anything separating them in terms of strength.

There's no proof the Admirals are not at least equal to the Emperors. As far as I see, Mother Carmel stating that Linlin has potential to be Admiral places her along Admirals; Emperors and Admirals are the strongest individuals in One Piece which are the 2 highest ranks in terms of power in the series.
Wouldn't the Gorosei, Fleet Admiral and other sectors of the WG (implied by the Gorosei) have more powerful members.
Always assumed the Gorosei were stronger than the Admirals... Same with the Fleet Admiral.

Personally, I look at the Gorosei as administrators. They may well have been former Fleet Admirals + Admirals who have retired and taken position of Gorosei.I don't think anyone can just take that position since they carry a lot of powerful knowledge that need remain confidential. Especially with the scars they carry, they must have been former navy officers of some rank at least.

based on the way his arm inflated it seems like it was indeed a combination of gears 3 and 4, if it was just more air into the muscles it would look diferently, because the shape and structure of muscles and bones are diferent so they inflate diferently, the way king kong gun looks it is like a combination of the inflation patterns of the tow gears, it looks like the size of the muscles is the same, but theyr attached to bigger bones, i think if it was just more air into the muscles then his arm would look more bloated and less like it still has a structure underneath it, well, thats how it looks to me at least.
