One Piece Manga Creator Eiichiro Oda: Story Is About 65% Finished

So if in 2012 it was about 60%, and now it's at 65%, then that means that 4 years is more or less 5%. Does that mean that OP still has more than 20 years to go D: ?

Well, probably not but those numbers sure are scary. At least another 10 years, that's for sure.
Yep, it´s part of an interview, sandman at APForums translated it or rather gave a summary

Here is my summary of ONE PIECE Great Newspaper Vol.2 which is released today.

- Oda used to say that all he needed was coffee and cola 4 years ago. But now Oda pays attention to his health.
He makes it a rule to drink water 2 liters a day. He thinks he can stay healthy if only he drinks much water. He sometimes exercise on fitness equipments in his studio.

- Oda usually sleeps for 3 hours a day. Oda doesn't want to spend much time on sleep since he is busy.
He can sleep as much as he wants only after the day he finishes drawing every week. But he can't sleep much recently due to aging.

- The interviewer asks Oda if he has some health issues now that he is in his 40s.
Oda answers that his health is not good, but he can come up with an interesting manga thanks to his short sleep and final push in his works.
Oda thinks it would be great if he can draw a good manga with 8-hours-sleep.

- Shueisha allows him to take more breaks these days. Oda wonders if this is because they are worried that ONE PIECE might come to an end due to his health problem.
Oda got hospitalized after he works in Film Z. He thought the staffs finally noticed that if he worked too hard he would be down, but after all he got involved in ONE PIECE Film again...

- There are too many things Oda wants to draw, so he merges the themes of islands. For example, Punk Hazard is originally consisted of fire island and ice island.
Dressrosa is originally consisted of dwarves island and passion island. But as opposed to his expectations, it took him twice the time than usual to draw these arcs.

- According to Oda, ONE PIECE is about 65% done. Oda says it is a fight between his lifetime and the ending of ONE PIECE. He says he needs to have the courage to reduce his ideas.

- After finishing ONE PIECE, Oda wants to go on trips like Buratamori.
(Buratamori is a popular TV show in Japan. In the show, an old man named Tamori, who was too busy to go on a trip for 30 years, visits various kinds of regions in Japan and introduces interesting information about it.)

- Interviewer asks Oda if he intends to draw manga again once a month after finishing ONE PIECE, but Oda instantly denies.

- Oda "I am happiest if kids enjoy reading my manga. But since my audience are getting older, it would be great if they read ONE PIECE with their kids."

- Oda "ONE PIECE is focusing on Sanji now. Be sure to look forward to the future story!"

- Oda "When Kaidou appeared for the first time, I said that Luffy can't defeat such a strong character yet. And I'm yet to know how Luffy would defeat Kaidou.
Probably my audience will not be satisfied if the reason for defeating Kaidou is just because Luffy's punch is so strong. Luffy and I have to find a solution somehow."

- Oda "ONE PIECE will be much more interesting in the future since I'm carefully selecting ideas these days.
Some people are seriously worried about my health, but don't be worried too much since I am quite tough."

[Some Trivias]

- Oda recently likes Ikumi Hisamatsu (久松郁実).

- Oda sometimes plays turntables for DJing in his studio.

- Oda collects model figures made by Ashley Wood.

- Oda has 100 inch TV. It was too large to fit through the entrance, so some construction work was needed on the door.

One Piece's Luffy, Chopper Make Cameo in Usagi Rope Anime

An interesting update from ANN on the Mugiwara, namely Luffy and Chopper, appearing in Kami-Usagi Rope: Warau Asa ni wa Fuku Kitarutte Majissu ka!? anime, which airs within the Mezamashi TV program on Fuji TV. The collaboration episode, titled "Pirate Ship," is part of the build-up to this Saturday's (23rd July) premiere of One Piece Film Gold. The voice actresses, Mayumi Tanaka (voice of Luffy) and Ikue Otani (voice of Chopper) had joined as special guests for the episode.

Both Tanaka and Otani commented on the collaboration prior to the episode's broadcast. "I like Kami-Usagi Rope's chill feel," Tanaka said. "I look forward to the finished product that will show the differing degrees of enthusiasm between Rope's characters and Luffy and Chopper's deep personalities."

Otani added, "I look forward to seeing what kind of world will be presented in the collaboration between the surreal feeling of Kami-Usagi Rope and the fiery One Piece."

For those who are unfamiliar with the anime series, Kami-Usagi Rope was originally a set of comedic shorts, created by Yūji Uchiyama. It involves a high school rabbit named Rope and his quick-tempered squirrel friend Akira, who together hold random conversations as they walk through their working-class neighborhood. The anime also received a feature-length film in 2012.

It's quite a funny series. More details can be found in ANN or Anime! Anime!.

For now, let's have some short clips of the episodes:

The episode, "Pirate Ship" is not up yet, but I reckon it will be funny too. :smile-big

Expect a lot of tears and snot coming out from the various characters(and readers).

But yeah Oda has the end all planned out, and in fact each time a new editor is hired Oda tells him about the end of OP.It's a custom.

Thanks for posting. :super

Oda had stated a long time ago that he had the ending of One Piece planned. He is now reinforcing what he has already said before. Accordingly, One Piece is about 65% covered prior to its final conclusion.

:^_^

We have also some other interesting articles featuring Brook and his shark guitar.

Rock Out One Piece-Style With Brook's Shark Guitar

It's a real, playable guitar, with hardware made by Japanese sting instrument parts manufacturer Gotoh, a body made of American basswood, and a neck made of hard maple. It comes with a case, strap and serial number. A serial number is also printed on the back and the Guitar Picks follow the One Piece Theme.

Wow! What a special One Piece treat! Music lovers, particularly guitarists among the One Piece fans, will love this new toy. :luv

Let's take a closer look at it...

So I have a question. Is Ussop Oda's depiction of a black person? The reason I ask is simply due to the fact that I remember there was a thing where Oda said if the crew came from parts of the actual planet, Ussop would be from Africa. Then I was looking at a picture of him:

And I was just like, "Wuuuuutttt" considering that a lot of manga authors got their inspiration from Toriyama, a bunch of stuff just started buzzing around in my head after that.

Now to be clear, I'm not trying to start anything. It's just something that I noticed, and I'm surprised it took me this long to pick up on it. It possibly because I don't pay attention to one piece as closely as I do other series. Now this can easily be explained away because I know Oda has a thing where he draws goofy characters. A lot of his characters in his work fit this mold, and aren't blatant representations of specific groups of people. The one piece world is vastly different from our world after all. But if you take it out of that bubble as Oda did, unless that whole thing is fake(correct me if so), and then claim that the character that most resembles Toriyama's blatant representation of black people would be from Africa if he was from the real world… It just gets one thinking.

If I understood your post you're saying that Usopp's depiction isn't that of someone who comes from Africa?

You know that there is such a thing as North Africans, right? And sorry to burst your bubble but not everyone in Africa is black, take South Africa for example. They have black and white people there.
Not saying that North Africans (such as me) are white, they're more brown although they're also called "caucasians".
Now if we just take Usopp, his skin tone is more on the sand beige side, which is typically the skin color of North Africans (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia etc).

The nose is big which is a bit of a stereotype about people of African origin. His hair is curly, like mine, which is also something found in Africa. So as far as him being from Africa it fits, just not the Southern or Central part of Africa. :)

And when you start putting labels on things, and saying that an African person should look like this or that, as in black, you start losing sight of what is important. That things such as race are not that important, and that in fact there is only one race: the human race. We're all the same shitty humans.:verily

Hope that answers your question.

This seems a bit hostile while that was entirely not my intention. The point of my post was to point out that Ussop resembles, if you look at him, and take into account what Oda said, Toriyama's depiction of a black person (resembles, keyword. Not looks exactly like). That was why I referenced him. Toriyama had a distinct way of depicting black people in his work. Given the fact that Ussop Resembles such, it clicked. And I was surprised by it (Wuuuuuuuut As in, Holy crap I never noticed that before).

And don't worry good Sir or Madam., you're not bursting my bubble at all. This is why I interpreted your post as hostile. I'm aware that there are not just black people in Africa, thank you very much. It's the visual cues (that you mentioned yourself) that I was looking at. And Oda's words that I was taking it that led me to my conclusion. Plus there's the fact that a lot of current manga authors have been inspired by Toriyama, who himself is "famous" depending upon how you look at it for his own depictions.

And the rest is where you are mistaken. I was not putting a label on anything, or claiming that Ussop should look a certain way. I was merely pointing out the resemblance to Toriyama's own depiction when you consider Oda's words(Toriyama's depictions not being a good thing at all in my opinion but that's a whole other can of worms). In summation, you missed my point and then due to your own interpretation of my post, decided to inform me on something that you did not believe that I was already aware. Which I am.

Then you should have considered that, because it's a very viable explanation.

As for Oda's comment back then, it's just about what place in the real world they could come from. I do not recall Japanese people having naturally green hair, despite Zoro being said to come from Japan. It's not just their appearance, it's their theme. Zoro has a samurai theme, Sanji has a French cook theme, and Luffy likes to party so I guess that it makes sense he would come from Brazil, since that is the image associated with it.

As for some supposed ressemblance with Toriyama, I do not recall any character having the same distinct feature and in the same ratio as Usopp. People look for possible inspiration in Toriyama's work, as if all the authors are inspired by him in everything. Realistically speaking that is not possible, because if so then there would be no novelty in such works and it would have already been done by Toriyama, so it feels very much like they're seeing those ressemblances and clues when they're not really there.

Since the ressemblance you speak of is vague at best, then it can't be that he was inspired by Toriyama and even if you see that ressemblance, there is NO proof that Oda had that in mind when he drew Usopp. And since Usopp's design is pretty unique, it must be the result of Oda taking all those features, which can be found in different races and putting them all together. Because that's what Oda does.:cookiehand

Tbh this question feels unnecessary as we already dealt with it, and Oda's comment doesn't at all touch on the races of the SHs as you might have wrongly assumed, just about what country they could come from.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---
Come on now you're being a bit over the top with this. Now you've started using expletives. If I recall correctly this is a discussion thread. So I asked the question because it came to mind and I was thinking about it. "Did Oda draw him that way, on purpose, or was it just a goofy character design as he tends to do." I've always thought the latter but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't question whether or not it's the former and ask about it. Never once did I claim this upset me in any way. However your need to seemingly give me a dressing down as it were says to me that we can't have a civil discussion about this. That's a shame because if you are the same person that I was discussing berserk with (which I believe to be so), I did not mean to upset you. However, regardless of what you think, I am aware of the things you were talking about. Just because I asked a question relevant to the one piece forum does not mean that that is not the case. If you were not comfortable with that question, that's fine. However that does not mean that it was my intention to start anything. Especially when I clarify such. So you can kindly go somewhere else with that.

Did I at all say that authors cannot depict their characters a certain way? And no it does not have to fit a certain stereotype. However, you already are aware of the reason why questioned it. There is a certain way that some Japanese authors depict black people. Ussop fits that mold as far as visual cues go. Did I once claime that Oda meant anything by this? No. Did I claim that he was being malicious? No. Did I claim anything negative other than the comparison to Toriyama which:

1. Does not automatically mean that I was saying anything negative about Oda

2. Are my own issues with Toriyama depictions and it has nothing to do with Oda himself

And finally, I didn't say that everything Oda does is inspired by Toriyama. However, I know that he was inspired by him. Point blank. And that served as part of the basis for my question.
Are big noses only found in black/african people? Plenty of white people have them, there's even a stererotype about Jewish people having big noses (which is a rather disgusting stereotype).
The same applies for curly hair, and even dark skin, one that isn't white.

Usopp's design is very unique, hence it can't have been inspired by Toriyama, so you're just looking too deep into it, when the very plausible answer is that :Oda likes to make unique characters, with a different combination of different features that are not in any way exclusive to one race.
And Usopp's oversized nose is a nod to Pinocchio, and lying ,since Uso means lying in Japanese.

And last but not least this is a manga, it doesn't have to reflect reality, at all. So you can kindly put that theory to rest, because there's very little basis to it.

I do not know which would be more disturbing, Oda (or Toriyama or any other Japanese author) depicting African characters the way most people think they look like, or him "whitewhashing" them like Hollywood has been doing as of late.I think the latter would be far worse.

Pleasure talking to you.:kappa

Is it really difficult to see me point of view, given everything we discussed now? No Ussop doesn't fit this exact mold. That is why I used the word resembled.

In Regard to everything else, I am fully aware. The reason I questioned it was for the reasons I have already explained. You claim I looked too deep into it, and there is very little basis. However, that's the point of discussion is it not? I thought that was what we're all here for. You claim that the question is unnecessary because you already gone over it. However, I barely frequent the one piece forms so what ever discussion was already had I was not here for. Which is why I'm asking in a one-piece hangout thread where members can discuss anything.

Believe me, Toriyama has already depicted "African" characters how he sees. General black, the boxer from one of the Dragon ball tournaments, even if Mr. Popo is based off of a genie, he can be counted to.

I can't necessarily claim the same. However, I hope our next encounter is more pleasant.
