I know what you're getting at, but taking out an underling 'without too much trouble' isn't that easy I'd say. I also think, that Luffy should be able to beat a guy like Cracker in order to become Pirate King, but we're talking about a Yonkou commander here, a guy who's maybe as strong as Marco, and Marco was strong enough to fight an Admiral. Obviously, having a good DF also plays a big role. I agree that Luffy needs some kind of power-up, but maybe his DF is more suited for fighting BigMom or Kaidou, who knows.
It should be easy enough though. If Luffy had no way to beat Bluenote, then he'd have had no chance against Lucci. He beat Bluenote with some difficulty, and it showed just how much difficulty he had in beating Lucci to the point that if not for Usopp, who knows what may have happened.

The thing is, Luffy doesn't need to be that strong or beat the Yonkou to become a pirate king. His definition of pirate king is someone who can roam the seas freely, it's out of choice that he wants to beat the Yonkou and establish his strength. If he makes it to Raftel, then that should make him the pirate king, especially as that's one of the requirements. But if he can't beat an underling without severe difficulty and help, then he has no chance at getting too far.

So far, doesn't look like his devil fruit can counter Big Mom or Kaidou.

i can already tell that luffy needs at least 2 power up levels:
he should be able to stay as long as he wants in G4 , thus having full control over G4,
and the awakening of his df. IMO, to reach those levels it will take at least 1 year. it reminds me of the side effect of gear 3rd when, luffy used it and stopped shrinking.

rocodile was stronger than Luffy, he beat him once and beat him again even when Luffy had his water with him.
Simply put, Crocodile was stronger than Luffy in their first few meetings. Crocodile was a serious pirate and logia at that.
Not at all, he wasn't stronger. He was advantaged. An opponent no matter how weak they were would be invincible if they can't be touched.

If he was stronger, then Luffy's grip wouldn't have hurt him.
Even with poison that should have paralysed Luffy and weakened him Luffy was still too physically strong for him.
He was never stronger, just advantaged due to the fact that he's a Logia. A Logia would defeat the strongest person if they had no ability to touch their opponent, that much is a fact.

Would be like claiming that Perona is stronger than the entire SH crew. Yes, she was said to be able to defeat them all, but it's only because of her ability that gave her an advantage. If they had fought physically, even Nami might have been able to defeat her, much less Franky or Chopper who are physically superopr to Perona too.

It still took a lot for Luffy to beat him.
He got defeated by a poisoned and compromised Luffy.

he did, but Ace still ultimately died, so Luffy still ultimately failed.

Nope, Ace decided to fight Akainu. What Ace does is his own right, not Luffy's. Luffy did his bit, Ace just made a bad decision. He was saved and free to go which was the aim and it was achieved.

He doesn't have to beat Big Mom, there are various ways to stop/prevent her from going after the Straw Hats' loved ones. Aokiji and Kuma didn't go after the rest of the crew because of some honor thing after beating Luffy and Zoro, which the same can apply to Big Mom. Or she can be distracted by her other opponents like Bege and his wife, the Vinsmokes, or other enemies.
Not sure if you've noticed like Jimbei did, but Big Mom is no honourable person. She has to be defeated and she will be. Luffy will nonetheless be at the top list of everyones to kill list. He's the protagonist. She still remembers that he wants to protect Fishman Island, of course she's going to go after it if Luffy just leaves with Jinbei. More so, Luffy is the one who destroys Fishman Island meaning Big Mom will get defeated.

One doesn't become Pirate King without being able to defeat the Yonko, something that has been stated to be a prerequisite in being Pirate King.

@HP I think you're being a bit semantic about the definition of strength. A good portion of Luffy's strength comes from rubber naturally benefitting melee attacks. By your logic, Luffy is merely "advantaged" when he uses his Gears, or even when he struck Croc with more force than a normal person should be able to.

The people you're replying to aren't saying Croc was physically stronger than Luffy, that's ridiculous. They were saying he was an overall stronger character, which was completely true. Most of Luffy's opponents are overall stronger characters.

The thing that pisses me off is that people simultaneously buy into the yonkou hype, but disclude it for BM because... idk. Her design? Luffy's ability to defeat stronger opponents? Bege's dumb plan or the tamatebako will 'weaken' BM enough for Luffy to step in and get the glory? See above post about undermining the climax of a saga called "The Yonkou War".

It's all bunk, Luffy or any of his rookie peers should not be able to defeat a yonkou, much less in the heart of their turf. And yes, the Supernovae are explicitly the top rookies. Just because they have fancy bounties doesn't mean they aren't as old as they are. It's a generational separation, not a power level mock up like bounties are.

But how do we know Crocodile isn't physically stronger, though? But yeah, he's a stronger character, and there's a decent chance if Crocodile used the same power he did in the Marineford War, he'd have probably beat Luffy. Again.

It's ridiculous how Big Mom is underrated and underhyped right now, just because of this or that. They try too hard to make it look like someone who couldn't beat an injured Doflamingo without help would be able to beat Big Mom on his own, without significant help. There are literally quite a few ways for Big Mom to not go after Straw Hats or their loved ones for a while, at this point, like I said.

Semantic? Not really.

Luffy is Rubber.

What is the property of being rubber? Just the ability to stretch.

Ability to stretch in itself doesn't entail strength.

The strength he showcases is his raw strength.

Of course, Gears do make him stronger; Gear 2nd however just allows him to maximise his own base strength - it's not actually a power boost.

The only boosts in strength he gets are from Gear 3rd and 4th which require air manipulation to increase his density for greater power output.

On top of that, unlike the vast majority of abilities, Luffy's ability is one of the only abilities that is only powerful if he himself is powerful; it utilises his stamina, strength, durability, pain-threshold and will-power which many abilities do not:
  1. Luffy couldn't maintain Gear 2nd if he didn't have the stamina and strength of mind; most times, his exhausted after using it because it pushes him.
  2. Gear 3rd initially used to make him shrink because his body wasn't accustomed to the stress it puts on him.
  3. Luffy's ability is literally a double-edged sword.
One of the few abilities that requires a very powerful and durable base in order to output or showcase power. Luffy's ability is constantly stressing him. His gears come at a price.

Example, when Luffy and Smoker were running towards Caesar, what did Luffy say? He said he had to run so fast he left a trail of fire which had him quite fatigued; Smoker on the other hand and thanks to his ability lost no energy because his ability doesn't so much require his physical stats.
As I said before, most abilities give power at no cost to the user. One of the few exceptions might be Blackbeard and Law whose ability actually requires his stamina. Luffy's requires his stamina, strength, pain threshold, etc.

Others with abilities don't really need to input their own physical capacity in order for their ability to be strong. Look at Barto, his barrier is indestructible and tanked the King Punch - he himself isn't that durable.

Anyone can be formidable and troublesome with a powerful ability, but not everyone can be innately strong, thus the desire for DFs. That's why so many sought after the Mera Mera no Mi and Rebecca thought it was her only chance of defeating Joker.

The people you're replying to aren't saying Croc was physically stronger than Luffy, that's ridiculous. They were saying he was an overall stronger character, which was completely true. Most of Luffy's opponents are overall stronger characters.
That isn't really strength; there's distinction between strength and advantage. Even Monet has touched on this; she said the winner of a fight isn't necessarily the stronger. She acknowledged she was weaker than Luffy, but still knew she could win because she hda the ability to sap his stamina (strength).
Even Oda has more or less alluded to this. He said ability doesn't necessitate character strength. He's in essence saying that ability doesn't determine how strong a character is; for the most part, it highlights advantage and also depending on the opponent too.

Not sure if you're accusing me of this, but at least in my case, it's not hype. If Luffy were facing Kaido right now as opposed to Big Mom, my conclusion would still be the same. The entire point of everything (time-skip) was to train Luffy and ready him for these moments. When he faces an Emperor, he's going to win and more so since the situation calls for it. When there's a lot at stake, there's the writing on the wall. It's more or less plot to simplify it as colloquial as that sound and reductionist.

They're not Luffy. They're not the ones who had a 2 year time-skip to train with legends. They're not the ones who do stupid and impossible things and then get to tell tales about it. They're not the ones who just make allies out of nothing nor are they the ones who just happen to be in the right place at the right time. The Supernova's failure is not the SH's failure, there's a distinction, the SHs are special nor are they equal. The Supernova have been in the New World for 1-2 years and what have they achieved? defeat and subordination; Luffy and the SHs have been there for a month? and have turned the New World upside down in such a short amount of time. There's clearly a difference.

Remember what Brulee said?

  1. This is the place where dreams die? Not for the SHs, this is the beginning.
  2. Stand toe to toe with a Yonko? They will.
  3. Lay a hand on Big Mom? They will.
  4. Infiltrate the party and stop the wedding? They've already half-way.
  5. Get your little friends back? Already have done so.
Absurd, unthinkable and preposterous? The exact sentiments of the masses shes expressing here, and as crazy as it sounds, the SHs defy the unthinkable and do the impossible.

At least, for me anyway it's not just blindly stating they will succeed. There's a trend and that's all I am going by. I'm not underestimating Big Mom, but someone has to go down and she's the first Yonko they're set to tango with and the table is pretty much set.

That is semantics though since you defined strength as raw physical strength (punching power, speed, endurance etc) and will power. Others define strength with a more general ability to just get things done, regardless of whether the ability is cheap or not. Imagine if Luffy fought Sugar and she turned him into a toy, then commanded him to commit suicide. In that case he would be dead and she would be alive. That would be a very cheap win, since her power is just ridiculous, but if you define strength in general to just be the ability to win/get things done, Sugar is strong.

Luffy is Rubber.

What is the property of being rubber? Just the ability to stretch.

Ability to stretch in itself doesn't entail strength.

The strength he showcases is his raw strength.
Being made of rubber ("ability to stretch") does "entail strength":
1. Physical strength is generated by muscles. Muscles are elastic, i.e. contract and relax to generate physical motion. The very fact that Luffy is rubber means he is going to be physically stronger because:
  • His muscles being made of rubber makes them more elastic than normal muscle tissue meaning he's automatically physically stronger
  • Luffy can push his muscles without ever worrying about tearing them like a normal human. An average man if he pushed his muscles to the max can lift large amounts of weight, but as a result would tear his muscles. Luffy faces no such issues.
2. Also a lot of Luffy's power in fighting comes from the fact that he stretches his limbs out to increase the power at impact. Without him being rubber Luffy would never be able to punch or kick as hard as he does now.

3. Luffy being made of rubber has made him immune from being physically damaged easily. Points in case that you seem to have glossed over:
  • Luffy cannot get shot. That is a huge deal that he is immune to guns.
  • Luffy is generally immune to blunt impact, i.e. a bat to the head, strong punch, fall from large heights et cetera.
Luffy being made of rubber gives him a lot of abilities that benefit the definition of strength you are using. And we haven't even gotten to where most of his strength comes from the Gears.

Of course, Gears do make him stronger; Gear 2nd however just allows him to maximise his own base strength - it's not actually a power boost.
So Hordy and the other fishmen using the pills to get strong counts as strength to you? All it did was maximize their own strength from the life span they had yet left to live (a more extreme version of Gear Second). More importantly, how is Luffy being able to maximize his strength using Gear Second not a huge deal? If a person without the Gomu Gomu power cannot do it, than this is inherently an advantage that Luffy has in a fight. Just because Crocodile's Suna Suna doesn't maximize his physical strength doesn't mean it should not be counted as strength if Luffy using Gear Second is counted as strength. Without Gear Second Luffy wouldn't even be that fast, as he has yet to use Soru once without it.

The only boosts in strength he gets are from Gear 3rd and 4th which require air manipulation to increase his density for greater power output.
The boost in power these two Gears offer is tremendous. Without them Luffy would be pretty weak so I don't get how you can be like "only boosts strength" as if these are minor power ups. Hell without Gear 4 Luffy would have died at Doflamingo's hands, or if we go way back Luffy would have died against Lucci without Gear 2nd and 3rd. The Gears are where most of Luffy's fighting abilities lie and they are only possible because he is rubber. A Luffy without his rubber power by your definition of strength (physical) would be far weaker.

On top of that, unlike the vast majority of abilities, Luffy's ability is one of the only abilities that is only powerful if he himself is powerful; it utilises his stamina, strength, durability, pain-threshold and will-power which many abilities do not:

All you've pointed out here are the weaknesses Luffy has in the way he is using his Gomu Gomu powers. Being rubber did not come with any inherent risks the way you make it sound. In this same regard, Chopper having the Human Human fruit does not come with inherent risks, but the way he uses is it with the Rumble Balls does, e.g. Monster Point. Very few abilities have inherent risks in OP. You provided Blackbeard who I think is the best example since Yami Yami powers make him feel and take more damage inherently whether he likes it or not, but it has a huge trade-off in being able to take away other abilities. Same with Law, he doesn't get a say in the matter when it comes to his Opi Opi powers sapping his stamina. Luffy doesn't have to use his Gears, which is where all these risks you talk about come from. If he just never used any Gears Luffy would also have abilities without any costs. Hell if Garp can be so strong as a melee fighter without using a Devil Fruit power than Luffy could just learn to get stronger without having to have used the Gears, but that's not the choice he made.

No where did I define strength as the ability to win. In fact, I said the opposite.

Re-read what I said, it's been severely misconstrued.

It doesn't.

How far rubber can be stretched depends on innate strength.

Someone might be able to pull a thick piece of rubber to as wide as a meter, while someone stronger can do 2 meters.

In fact, this point is made in the Manga.

It was stated that Luffy had become stronger when he showed he could extend/stretch his arm further.

Ability to stretch is just increased potential, not increased strength.

So Hordy and the other fishmen using the pills to get strong counts as strength to you? Actually, if you read the explanation properly. Luffy explicitly states it's to fight at the best his body allows him, not to increase his strength.

Hody Jone's pills was actually increasing strength, Gear 2 is based on the user's ability. It's like being forced to sprint; that's what Gear 2 essentially does. Unless you can maintain that speed and strength, you can't use Gear 2nd, thus, the reason it makes him hungry. It's only a threat to his life when he exhausts his stamina.

Crocodile's sand is not strength, it's an advantage. Ability to absorb water and whatnot has no bearing on strength, it's an effect.

I see no valid point here. I pointed out the fact that Luffy's ability requires his physical attributes while other abilities do not. It's impossible to capitalise on the rubbery body without being strong in the first place; other abilities, you can just fly into people and demoralise them, electrocute them or burn them without any drop in stamina and whatnot.

No I read what you said. To quote I said "That is semantics though since you defined strength as raw physical strength (punching power, speed, endurance etc) and will power. " In fact I bolded how you are defining strength to make it as clear as possible. Then I said that "Others define strength with a more general ability to just get things done, regardless of whether the ability is cheap or not." Since depending on the person, strength is defined differently, this is a matter of semantics, which is what I pointed out here.

So you have nothing for point 1. That being rubber makes him innately stronger as rubber muscles are more elastic than biologic muscle? That Luffy can push his muscles to their limits without tearing them? Or for point 3. That he is physically much more durable just by being made of rubber (Ace say's it even here in the page you're showing)? If you can't refute these, then that already means that Luffy is stronger just by having the Gum Gum fruit without having to do anything.

And for point 2. you're saying that "Ability to stretch is just increased potential, not increased strength." I'm no physicist but potential is what turns to kinetic energy. Having his arm stretched out further increases the potential energy, which in turn mean more kinetic. As for what you've highlighted, I notice that Sabo didn't even confirm yes you're getting stronger... However, I do see the point you're making in that he has to get his base form stronger for him to stretch out further, which makes logical sense to me. So the steps can be broken down to:
  1. Luffy gets physically stronger in base form
  2. Being stronger allows him to stretch further
  3. Stretching further is making his attacks far stronger on impact than his base attack would be even after having grown stronger
Since point the above is always true I don't see how this refutes anything. The fact that he stretches amplifies the strength at impact regardless of whether he needs to get his base stronger to stretch further.

Again, Luffy chose to develop the Gears as his way of fighting, which I have no issue with as that is his decision. Anyone who can increase their metabolism to the degree Gear 2 does without dying could argue that it is just them fighting at their best (Ivankov's hormones can be argued to be doing something similar). However, he could have chosen to just increase his strength outside the Gears and gotten just as strong. Luffy is a melee fighter and we know that a melee fighter can get strong without using anything like the Gears, hence my example in Garp. So if all of the drawbacks that you can point out from Gum Gum comes from the Gears than you have no basis to say that Luffy's devil fruit comes at a cost while others don't. Hordy's pill did the same exact thing as Gear Second. They pushed the body beyond its limits in order to gain temporary strength by amplifying their base strength. While Gear second doesn't increase strength as much as taking multiple pills, it is making Luffy's life shorter since it is increased metabolism. The pills on the other hand after abuse shorten life span so much the Fishmen pirates became old men. A person who takes a single pill or two is essentially like using Gear 2 which is like a doubling of strength.

Crocodile's sand is not strength, it's an advantage. Ability to absorb water and whatnot has no bearing on strength, it's an effect.
This is why I said it's semantics. By your definition of strength, this statement is correct but not everyone uses your definition. Luffy is likely about to face off against Big Mom. She uses the Soru Soru fruit, which now allows her have Zeus, Prometheus, and Napoleon. She also can steal a person's life force and kill them using her powers. These are not strength by your definition but an advantage since they are not physical strength (not arguing that Big Mom is also not physically strong as we know she is).

You never said that Luffy is not innately physically stronger just by having a rubber physiology. His muscles are stronger, he is more durable, et cetera just by being rubber regardless of whether he trained or not. I do understand that it takes work to get more out of the Gomu Gomu powers but I feel that you also just assume that a Logia power is all there from get go. Are you going to argue that had Rebecca eaten the Mera Mera she would be using attacks like Entei right off the bat or that Doffy could just use parasite and Birdcage just by having the fruit? Even powerful Devil Fruits users like Logia's have to train to get the most out of their abilities, they are not automatic.

Well, you're wrong. Superior ability doesn't entail being stronger or character strength as the SBS clearly states. It essentially implies that DF power and advantage is independent from character strength.

  • Luffy gets physically stronger in base form
  • Being stronger allows him to stretch further
  • Stretching further is making his attacks far stronger on impact than his base attack would be even after having grown stronger
Flawed logic. The fruit is only powerful because Luffy is strong in his base. Other abilities do not function like this for the most part, they just attribute power at no cost. Luffy's is a double edged sword.

Irrelevant whether he chooses or not. The fact is the strength he does gain from the ability is as a result of his own durability, strength, pain-threshold.

Gear 2nd doesn't double his strength, completely false. Manga explicitly states it just allows him to fight with his full strength, not increased strength. Clearly stated here.

Not just mine, but Oda's too, thus, the fact that superior ability doesn't equate to being stronger or character strength. Luffy isn't necessarily stronger than Enel just because his ability is superior, but we see that when they trade blows, each one has Enel in severe pain to the point of eyes rolling to the back of his head. That tells us Luffy's power is pretty outstanding.

Enel with his ability to produce electricity and lightening almost wiped out the entire Angel Island which is massive with a mere thrust of his hand. Could he do that with a blow? a kick? Doubt it. Difference between ability power and strength for the most part. Anyone can be powerful with an ability, but to be innately strong which is a relative term? That is rare; it's only the exception that are innately powerful, and this is referring to those at the very top.

Even Van Augur makes similar sentiments.

He claims anyone can appear powerful with an ability, but once it's taken away and they appear weak, it's proof they're weak. This is the opposite of Ace, despite the fact he lost intangibility, he showed great physical attributes being able to take Blackbeard's blows which is what he's being commended for, therefore, complimenting him as strong.

Then you completely misunderstand what I'm saying. Whether Rebecca got the Mera Mera no Mi and could do Entei or not is irrelevant. The fact is with intangibility and the power to burn, she's inherently a greater threat. Even Sabo who only just got it pulled off pretty epic attacks, but again, that doesn't make him strong, just advantaged.

I did say Luffy is innately strong due to his strength; his rubber ability doesn't determine if he can lift a rock or push buildings or flip a mountain over, his strength does. All Rubber lets him do is stretch. His stamina has nothing to do with being able to stretch, his pain-threshold has nothing to do with being able to stretch; without him being strong at base, his Gears couldn't function - no one with the requisite strength, stamina or threshold could sustain or maintain Gears.

I probably didn't come across clearly on this point. I don't think that DF power alone is character strength. I'm just saying that DF power is still part of a character's strength. In my example Sugar can be considered strong due to her DF ability being so hax, but that doesn't mean Sugar without the fruit is strong. If a person has no idea about her power she is likely to win, but if a person knows they can exploit her being weak physically and win. So I think we have to take a balanced approach when describing how strong a character is overall. What I personally didn't agree with you on was defining character strength on physical aspects and leaving out powers that a character can use like the fire and lighting etc. So I don't have any problems with the highlighted portion that ability [assuming DF ability, correct me if I'm missing something] is not a characters strength since we have to take into account the base character strength w/out the ability, their intelligence/strategy et cetera. I think our disagreement here is how we are defining character strength with you going the route of the base character themselves and me going the route of the base character + DF ability Correct me if I'm wrong and we can hash this out more?

Flawed logic. The fruit is only powerful because Luffy is strong in his base. Other abilities do not function like this for the most part, they just attribute power at no cost.
To me Luffy's stretching amplifies his base physical power. If Luffy can punch with some "X" force without stretching, I argue that stretching will result in the force of that punch being some multiple of that "X". In a fight since he is stretching I argue that Luffy is getting a power up. You argued that his ability to stretch further back is a result of his base strength and that is true, but to me that doesn't take away from the multiplier in force from stretching. Where I can agree with you here is only if Luffy has to first get his base strength to a certain level before he can actually stretch in a meaningful way to attack, which may be true.

Other abilities for the most part work this way as well. They may be easier to make quicker use out of depending on the fruit but I don't think people like Doflamingo can just use their ability in a meaningful way from the get go. For example when Tashigi and Smoker switched bodies, Tashigi was never able to make effective use of the Smoke Smoke fruit http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/670/3 having problems just stretching out the arm reminiscent of Luffy when he was training with the Gomu Gomu powers as a kid.

Luffy's is a double edged sword.

I completely made an assumption on Gear 2nd doubling his strength so yeah that is not true. However, in general what makes Luffy's fruit a double edge sword that is different from any other fruit? There is no inherent weakness aside from regular DF weakness that Luffy has to deal with just by having the Gomu Gomu powers. The double edge parts all come from his Gears, which is from how he is using the fruit. Sure he has to be strong on his own to make any good use of the Gears but why is him choosing to use his DF powers in this way irrelevant?

To me this boils down to: Can any person with a DF use their power in a way that makes them stronger but acts as a double edge sword? Chopper for me is a perfect example of this, since his Monster Point is a double edge sword as well, but is not an inherent weakness of his fruit since he has to choose to use the fruit in that way for it to be a problem. Something to look out for is if other people also use their DF power in a way that can be harmful to them.

This point might also be a matter of perspective. I view a fruit power as a double edge sword if it inherently comes with a weakness that is always active like Black Beard and Law, whose fruits have a price for just using the power in any form. Others have to use their power in a specific way to have the drawbacks. If you view this in a different way, which it seems you do, I'm curious as to why you define the choice of how the power is used as not really relevant?

Not just mine, but Oda's too, thus, the fact that superior ability doesn't equate to being stronger or character strength. Luffy isn't necessarily stronger than Enel just because his ability is superior, but we see that when they trade blows, each one has Enel in severe pain to the point of eyes rolling to the back of his head. That is rare; it's only the exception that are innately powerful, and this is referring to those at the very top.
I think I covered most of this in my first part of this reply. Since I view strength to be both body and ability together. The match up between Luffy and Enel to me is one where Luffy is physically stronger and Enel has an overall much more powerful DF. In this case, the powers did not match up well since Luffy had immunity to most of Enel's powers, making the fight a mostly physical one. Since Luffy is physically stronger than Enel I think the fight turning out the way it did makes a lot of sense.

I think where we may differ here is I would still say Enel is the stronger character overall while you would say it is Luffy (I may be mistaken in assuming this)? I think of it like if Enel were to face 100 random fighters of random varying strength and Luffy were to do the same, that Enel would have a better average than Luffy. In most fights Enel's lighting would play a huge factor and the fact he is a logia in itself would be too much for most people to handle while Luffy wouldn't be as difficult since they can hit him and well he can't shock them with millions of volts. To be clear this would have to be a random sample of opponents. If we chose strong people with haki from the New World, Luffy may due better than Enel even at that point since he is more physically durable.

I think this is just the same as above. Distinguishing between pure DF power and the DF power + physical ability in our definitions of strength. Ace had physical ability, so he could fight without relying on just his DF power alone.

I can agree with that. You're essentially just saying that DF powers aren't all equal. Something like Mera Mera, Magu Magu, etc are just more powerful abilities than powers like Hanna Hanna, Gomu Gomu, etc. The user will obviously matter too but that is besides the point.

I understand that Luffy is strong on his own. Where I think you need to be more nuanced is where you say all rubber does is allow him to stretch. While that is technically true, it is too simplistic. By stretching Luffy can punch harder since the force of his base strength is multiplied by some factor. His stamina as in energy reserves is not related to him being rubber but his stamina as in how much physical damage he can take is. Since his power makes him immune/highly resistant to blunt damage he can tank more attacks thanks to his fruit. That should not take away from his own base stamina though since I'm sure he can take a lot of damage just his body like Zoro can. I'm just saying that his fruit allows him to take more than his base physical limit at any given point in time.

More or less. I can understand determining or judging a character as strong, but the base is what makes a character exceptional. Anyone can be powerful with an ability, but to be purely power isn't. Take Cracker for example, his ability allows him to:
  • Create clones that only Gear 4th can destroy.
  • Multiple clones at that.
  • They don't require his stamina, but a mere clap to summon.
  • They fight without his input.
While this can be considered as him being strong, anyone would be considered strong if they could replicate such a feat. Of course, he's strong, but I think his strength lies in his ability.
  • Strength is based on innate strength without ability; take Blackbeard, yes, he may have the Yami Yami no Mi, but if he weren't strong, all those attacks from Whitebeard and Sengoku would have defeated him; this tells us he's innately strong and more so since the Yami Yami no Mi increases the damage from attacks.
To me Luffy's stretching amplifies his base physical power. If Luffy can punch with some "X" force without stretching, I argue that stretching will result in the force of that punch being some multiple of that "X". In a fight since he is stretching I argue that Luffy is getting a power up. It is the result of his base strength.

The ability to stretch isn't a substantial strength.

Of course, it has benefits, but we can't dismiss the reliance on Luffy's base strength to be remotely useful. This is why when Luffy got stronger, Gear 3rd no longer shrinks his body; Gear 2nd is no longer as difficult to maintain.

Abilities like Joker's are no different to Luffy's in term of being able to use, everything requires practice. The thing however is Joker's ability still offers a great advantage. Strings that allow to attack multiple opponents, create a clone, and a birdcage which remains as long as he's not unconscious; there's no dependency on stamina or strength.

Smoker's ability stretching isn't the same as Luffy's stretching. They may be the same, but the mechanism isn't.

However, in general what makes Luffy's fruit a double edge sword that is different from any other fruit? There is no inherent weakness aside from regular DF weakness that Luffy has to deal with just by having the Gomu Gomu powers. It is a double edged sword. Luffy's ability requires his strength in all areas, even the length at which he can stretch and control. Other abilities just require control. There's no stress on their stamina, their base strength, or their durability or pain threshold. There's a reason that when Luffy uses Gear 4th, Rayleigh says its too hard on his body.
It's not just Gear 4th, but all his Gears take a toll until he gets stronger physically to adapt like one does at a gym when their strength increases and adapts to the intensity at which they workout with weights and endurance. Luffy's ability is power that depends on his own strength and an increase at the cost of his own strength; almost all other abilities just offer up a straight up advantage or strength at no cost at all. Perona demoralising an opponent doesn't require her strength, stamina, or pain-threshold - simply fly into the opponent and they're done for.

Also, if one watches Luffy use his Gomu Gomu punches as a kid, starting out and now, Luffy used to have to hold his arms just to aim and was making a lot of blunders. Now, he can do a lot of things he couldn't do then without the aids he had to implement.

The things Luffy does could never have been done if he had the perfect control as a kid because he lacked the strength; the things other DF users do could be done without the strength, but with perfect control. Luffy's ability is not an ability for the weak.

I think I covered most of this in my first part of this reply. Since I view strength to be both body and ability together. The match up between Luffy and Enel to me is one where Luffy is physically stronger and Enel has an overall much more powerful DF. To be clear this would have to be a random sample of opponents. If we chose strong people with haki from the New World, Luffy may due better than Enel even at that point since he is more physically durable.
Seems to be more of a case where Enel is just more advantaged.

You could fight someone physically weaker than you, but if they have a gun, are they necessarily stronger than you? Not at all, it's more like they're advantaged. DFs are in essence like weapons; for the most part, they're just pure advantage. That's why Monet could prove problematic to Luffy and Perona could be a handful despite her being relatively weak physically.

I think this is just the same as above. Distinguishing between pure DF power and the DF power + physical ability in our definitions of strength. Ace had physical ability, so he could fight without relying on just his DF power alone.
That's why Ace is strong as are all other exceptional character. Characters like Garp, Akainu, Aokiji would all be powerful regardless of ability. Akainu for example taking Whitebeard's attacks isn't because of his ability, but his innate durability and threshold for pain. These are things that DF do not really ascertain.

I can agree with that. You're essentially just saying that DF powers aren't all equal. Something like Mera Mera, Magu Magu, etc are just more powerful abilities than powers like Hanna Hanna, Gomu Gomu, etc. The user will obviously matter too but that is besides the point.
It is the point though. That's the only reason why character are suddenly fodder once ability is taken away. Only the truly strong are still a threat regardless of ability being taken away.

I understand that Luffy is strong on his own. Where I think you need to be more nuanced is where you say all rubber does is allow him to stretch. While that is technically true, it is too simplistic. By stretching Luffy can punch harder since the force of his base strength is multiplied by some factor. I'm just saying that his fruit allows him to take more than his base physical limit at any given point in time.
It isn't simplistic or requires nuance, it's just the honest fact of the matter.

Stretching is based on his innate strength,
  • Gears depend on his pain-threshold, strength and durability.
  • Every aspect of his power is reliant on his base.
Even if he can stretch, that's not the reason his attacks are powerful; he himself is still naturally powerful.

Even if he has high resistance, most of his fights are not entirely from blunt based attacking opponents. As we saw, when Luffy fought Moriah, Kuma brought out the pain that Luffy was fighting under. That had nothing to do with his ability, but his ability to endure and persevere and fight on regardless of the condition. Or, Luffy fighting Crocodile even though he should have been paralysed, it shows the fortitude Luffy has. His strength is not entirely DF based, and for the most part, it's a double edge-sword; he is innately strong.

The only thing Luffy is immune to is being crushed as rubber bounces back into original shape, but his pain and the pain he feels and takes is as great as any. Look how he still fought Magellen despite the excruciating pain? Or how he survived Ivankov's treatment? His strength is for the most part innate, and they're greatly highlighted by his ability. If any weakling had Luffy's ability, the ability would simply look like trash.

Come on, sanji dodged a kick... Surely that is a feat that requires some power but overall it's not that big a deal... I mean, we could expect virtually anyone in the monster trio to be able to evade a lone attack from an admiral class enemy. It's not like the spoilers suggest sanji held his ground against him which would be a vastly different situation.
i really hope this is not a comparison of younkou commanders to admirals. because i think admirals are straight up stronger than younkou commanders. but then again its my opinion (:

Even if the manga showed an edge, it wasn't that big. An important consideration here is that during the WB war the WB pirates were consistently at a disadvantage. They were on the offensive while the marines played defense and did everything they could to take the advantage of the their home field. Just at the start of the war you had the pirates surrounded by giant metal walls which not even WB could bring down and they only passed because oar's jr sacrificed himself. And all of that ended playing out against marco and jozu who at the start of the war were indeed shown being perfectly capable of holding their own against admirals. Also worth noting, I am not talking about all yonko commanders. It would be the top 2-3 top fighters of each yonko crew that would be the yonko's answer to admirals.

I guess you're right but, what really bothersbe is doffy treating jozu like shit and a lot oof people will disagree with doffy being put on an adnmiral's level, not even jacks. personally, i think it has more to do with abilities. for e.g. marco is a perfect fit for kizaru hence why they seemed on par. Jozu seemed to have a better edge against aokiji but thats dues to his near unbreakable df. It just bugs me being unable to scale characters cos i end up getting into argument with my friends about who is stronger lol

Well, there is plenty of context to suggest doflmaingo is not quite as strong as either of those. In turn I would argue the bit with doflamingo catching jozu is not too reflective of strength. Doflamingo caught jozu of guard to begin with and his strings are insanely strong. Remember the bird cage, doflamingo had a horde of strong people on the run, including a bonafide admiral. Jozu being caught like that does not mean doflamingo was in any way stronger.

Why would marco be a perfect fit of kizaru? Their abilities don't have a strength/weakness relationship so to speak. Marco doesn't have a strength or weakness to light any more than he has any special weaknesses/strength to ice or lava.

Yeah but Luffy's G4 easily escaped the strings. I know that Issho said he was staying out of the fight thats why he was neutral. he only helped with the slowing of the birdcage as he can explain this as "he was doing it to save his own skin"(note he did not actually say this). personally i think he coulda applied his gravity ability to the birdcage to go away but doffys status wont let him.
Remember Smoker vs Ace, where ace i believe said the match was gonna be a draw as their elements couldnt overcome each other. Now i know marco is an ancient zoan, but his abilities are like that of a logia. So he was able to take on damages from kizaru and not be affected by it. in essence what im saying is that Marco's fruit being op made him on par to be able to face off against kizaru.
Now a different scenario, why do you think blackbeard defeated marco?? he took away his df ability temporarily and damaged him is what i can think of.
So marcos ability is not a perfect fit for bb. For someone like say magellan. he wipped out BB and his crew in a matter of seconds. he didnt even have to move a muscle. this will make you think BB is weak but it's just a df OPness lol.
see what i mean?

Yeah but Luffy's G4 easily escaped the strings. I know that Issho said he was staying out of the fight thats why he was neutral.
Well that was obviously bullshit from Oda, I mean DD could've used that move from the start on Luffy before Gear 4, but hey Oda forgot... Small bad writing so we can let that one slide

I am not so sure that is why isshou was staying out of the fight. For one thing, he has the authority to revoke doflamingo's status just as he did to law. And even then, doflamingo's shichibukai title was rescinded since the moment the people of dressrosa transformed back into toys (perhaps not literally but at that moment you'd think it's as good as gone). Unless fujitora would have hesitated to do such a thing though that does not seem much in character. To me it looks like fujitora stayed out of the fight because he would rather help people and by the time bird cage was a thing it was a better choice for him to help stop the cage than to go all the way to doflamingo to beat him.

As for marco, his fruit is absolutely nothing like ace's. Oda has already explained marco's fruit. Marco's flames are not even hot, they simply regenerate marco. Which is dramatically different from what logia does. When light or anything else goes through marco he gets legitimately hurt. But his flames regenerate or heal him. When stuff goes through a logia the person in question did not even get hurt. And if he does get hurt he will heal the same way as any other. Marco does not even seem capable of shooting or otherwise generating fire either. Marco''s fruit merely looks similar to ace's but the way it actually functions does not even resemble ace's.

I think you mean ace right? To me it looks like BB lost against magellan because he got over confident for the most part. BB is too prone to taking attacks. As WB said, his defenses are weak. BB's overall fighting strategy when fighting is simply not effective against magellan. Even if BB succeeded at using his gravity to grab magellan he would still be covered in poison, just touching magellan would be fatal. And the issue here is not even devil fruits per say but rather how BB specifically uses his fruit. Imagine if BB and magellan fought now. The logical strategy would be for BB to deploy his darkness and simply absorb any poison magellan throws at him.

Well, to be fair the circumstances are rather different. Doflamingo basically sneaked up on jozu. And doflamingo does have several types of strings with varying degrees of resistance. And it is not like this defeated jozu or anything of the sort.

yeah i think he stayed out of the fight because he was more concerned by the the citizens lives. issho did say he'd deal with doflamingo once the whole situation was resolved though.
I never said marco was a flame type, i'm well aware of what Oda said about his flames. but just like you just explained my point, when you damage him, while his ability is active, hen regenerates quite quickly, so you can easily mistake that as logia flames. once again he's not a logia.
And no i meant Marco, in the off screen payback war. i was simply setting a scenario of marco's confrontation vs BB. If BB took away marco's ability, he'd be vulunrable like he was when onigumo cuffed him and kizaru actually managed to inflict proper damage on him. and this will mean one quake punch will decimate him.
Yeah but BB wasnt the only fighter present tbh. they all lost in an instant.
