So apparently we're getting a novel about Ace?

This year's combined 21st and 22nd issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is revealing on Monday that Eiichiro Oda's One Piece franchise is getting a novel titled One Piece Novel "A". The novel will center on Ace's past, and will be serialized in the upcoming One Piece Magazine, a new magazine being published to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the One Piece manga.

Is this the first time One Piece gets an official story/novel that's not in the manga format? I actually don't know, but seeing as it's been 20 years, I'm guessing maybe? Anyway sounds pretty interesting, too bad it's not a monthly manga kind of thing, would've definitely liked to see that.

There's been light novels based on OVAs, filler arcs and movies. Two of those were canons; from the Alabasta and Chopper arcs.

they're below expectations = they're weaker than YOUR expectations.
And just because someone got hyped doesn't mean they're all seeing type of god that can handle so many people at once, he's only focused on the most import thing, save mama's life. Also mama's crew has been caught by the element of surprise, just like the vinsmokes. As you can see the vinsmoke due to their little number are at loss. best chance ally with luffy get clones in there through denden mushi.. You might have over hyped katakuri in your mind, due to his bounty, one mistake everyone makes and now oda has disappointed your expectations. From what i can remember, doffy's bounty was frozen at 500ml due to his former status as warlkord. Now due to his defeat, his bounty has stayed the same, but if he was a free pirate, i am certain it would have reached a billion, or close to crackers. Yest doffy is as strong if not stronger than cracker. at least. You need to deep that first, And then understand that luffy beat doffy.
No time skip is really needed imo simply because luffy grew so much in the grand line and we barely seen him in the new world, like come on it's only been days and people are already calling/suggesting for timeskip. thats ridiculous.
Spot on, if anyone is calling for a time-skip at this point, then it just goes to show they truly didn't grasp the purpose of Sabaody, Marineford and the 2 year time-skip. Sabaody and Marineford were intended to showcase that the SHs were too weak to achieve their goals if they went into the New World; 2 year time-skip was to diminish this weakness. The time-skip wasn't just intended to survive - all the Supernova have survived without training specially which renders that notion obsolete; the time-skip was intended to make Luffy strong enough to take on the Admirals and Yonko which is why he said what he said against Fujitora.

The thing about fighting and combat in One Piece is that strength isn't all that determines the winner of a fight; we're even told that the winner of a fight isn't necessarily the stronger by Oda in SBS and even in the Manga multiple times.

This then brings us into the function of DFs in the story besides being plot-devices. Everyone but Luffy possess a DF that gives them critical advantages that work in most situations:
  • Joker can control a host of strings enable him to fight multiple people at once effortlessly without the need to exert his own physical strength.
  • Cracker can summon an army of biscuits that are all strong enough to withstand a Gear 3rd attack - has nothing to do with Cracker's own physical strength.
  • Perona who took out the entire SH crew can diminish morale and confidence with her ability - nothing to do with her strength.
  • Mont'dor can just put people in books and trap - nothing to do with his strength.
  • Bartolomeo can summon a barrier that is strong enough to take the King-punch which can defeat an Emperor only if it lands - it has nothing to do with his physical strength or durability.
When you're fighting against such advantages, you can't just fight head on, but fight tactically, thus, the need to fight in teams to make for for the disadvantaged experienced.

Anyone can prove to be problematic and difficult to fight against when they have such battle convenient abilities, but not everyone can be innately strong without it. An example would be how it took both Garp & Sengoku to take on Shiki - it's not that Shiki is twice as strong as Admirals, it's just that Shiki with his ability can easily fight multiple people, thus the reason it was necessary to take him on as a pair.

This is why Luffy's fight with Cracker doesn't prove he's too weak to take on Big Mom; Cracker just had an advantaged ability in relation to Luffy, therefore, Nami's intervention was needed.

The one truth still remains is that once Luffy and Cracker got in a 1 on 1 situation, all it took was 1 punch to take him out in person. The water after-all didn't weaken Cracker, just his clones, so if Cracker were really as strong as Luffy, it'd surely have taken more than 1 punch to his actual body to defeat him.

I am not sure I understand why Daifuku is after Sanji... BM already achieved her goal the moment Germa came to Totland, meaning she may have well released Sanji and let the SH go, and still get to capture Germa and the rest

Regarding the Vinsmolke siblings, emotionless is not he proper word... I think they lack any empathy at all, because we have seen them get angry and stuff, but clearly they are incapable of empathy at all
I agree. I think they lack empathy and fear, making them biologically predisposed to being ruthless and relentless soldiers for their father.
Regarding Daifuku, I believe the reason of his attack may be Sanji's claim on the Germa Kingdom. Even if BM knows he is not quite as cruel as his brothers, she probably prefers to eliminate all possible claimants rather than running the risk of a Germa flight or riot. Of course, we as readers know Sanji would not be interested in becoming a new Germa warlord, but I don't think him granting Germa independence and the soldiers becoming a new allied faction in the SH Grand Fleet would be entirely out of the question. In other words, in machiavellic terms, given her goal, I think she is as much in the right as Kaidou was in deciding to destroy Zou.

The same cannot be said of her apparent habit of killing her own officials after failure, which must be a Sailor Moon level degree of villainous stupidity. Oh, well, this woman’s derangement defies reason. I cannot understand how some people still think you can be well off under her if you are not intending treason, when she has been shown to be the most evil villain already revealed in the OP world, capable of killing her own children for the most trivial reasons without showing any remorse. I think the only one that approaches or perhaps surpasses her in that regard is Enel, who was happy in sending all of his officials to senseless deaths just for his own amusement.

In general, I tend to agree with your thesis, but I think you are underplaying how strong Cracker really was. A great part of his strength came from his DF, granted, but I believe the evidence suggests his Haki was stronger than Luffy's, and the combination of his Haki, his biscuit armors and his physical strength was sufficient to send Gear 2-3 Luffy flying. In terms of CoA, he may have been the strongest Haki user already revealed, given Luffy's comments. One sword attack from him was enough to cause a deep cut in G4 Luffy's arm. He revealed himself that his weakness was low resistance to pain, but I also believe you are kind of underplaying his resistance. He probably received a few punches during the fight, perhaps even from G4 Luffy, but he was able to block or evade them far better than Doflamingo. Even with his cookies softened, Luffy still had to fight for 8 hours before finding an opening. Moreover, it was not even a G4 punch that defeated him, but rather tricking him into a G4 cannon and shooting him without leg resistance (since he lost contact with the ground) against his own harder than steel cookies, breaking a row of cookie soldiers in the process.

Given all that, as far as such judgments can be made in the OP world, I think it’s fair to surmise that Cracker was stronger than Luffy. Perhaps he would still be able to defeat him without Nami, but I think it’s more likely that he wouldn’t. Even if he were able to, it would also be possible for it to take him 2 defeats to do so, like in his fight against Crocodile in Alabasta. Anyway, we cannot be sure. I’m not rejecting the possibility of him defeating BG and/or the other commanders, however, especially if he gets help, if he gets a power up and if BG is weakened by the poison. I have been thinking, and perhaps part of the way he’s going to do that may be by going Berserk in G4 mode, then eating a lot of the scenario, being protected by his allies, recovering from the damage and getting an energy refill from the cookies, then repeating the process all over again. Also, given that his body seems to grow up under situations of great physical pressure and effort, perhaps this intense overuse of G4 may also play a role in the power up I think he may be about to experience.

Regarding Sanji’s beat down against Daifuku this chapter, many were disappointed on him, but we have to remember that the Minister of Beans is BG’s third son, probably in her top 10. He is the equivalent of a WB commander; as far as we know, he may be up there with Vista in terms of combat ability. Even if all Sanji does this arc is beating Daifuku, that would still be quite a feat.

To be fair, I don't think I am downplaying Cracker.

Initially, when Cracker fought against Luffy, it wasn't Cracker himself fighting, it was the clone. All he was doing was sitting inside of it while it did all the work. Bare in mind he doesn't have to move a muscle to control his Biscuit clones. His ability was a huge part of why he was so strong.

Cracker is strong, but strength of Haki isn't really relevant in proving to be stronger than someone else. Take the Gorgon Sisters - They had stronger Haki than Luffy (who at this time couldn't exercise it), but Luffy with brute strength still defeated them. Armament Haki is just 1 facet of a character's innate strength.

Also, when Cracker as taking on Luffy, it was his biscuit clone fighting, not Cracker using his own actual strength or body.

We also know that Cracker's ability requires no stamina whatsoever, all it takes is a clap to summon a biscuit.

Cracker never even fought Luffy head on. It was always with clones because he never wanted it to be a 1 on 1 situation.

For the entirety of his battle, he continuously summoned his clones - 11 hours in fact which is why we still see them at the very final moments. He is completely reliant on his clones and we can see the tactics he uses. He uses them to occupy Luffy and then he tries to sneak in an attack - he had a huge huge advantage.

At what point Nami even started weakening the clones with rain? We don't know. Nonetheless, Cracker still felt the need to summon them even at the 11th hour. It shows how heavily reliant on his clones are.

The only time he attacked Luffy without his clones was only when he assumed Luffy couldn't move.

Cracker is strong, but he isn't stronger than Luffy. His clone could even grow multiple arms, that is an advantage. His ability gave him a huge advantage.

The only thing Nami's rain did was weaken his clones, but he still continued to summon them despite that. It shows how much he didn't want it to be 1 on 1.

The rain didn't even weaken him. He could still move and fight with his full physical strength. So really, Cracker has no excuses for losing if he was indeed stronger.

He wasn't tricked; if anyone was tricked, it was Luffy. He hid in his clone and attacked Luffy who wasn't expecting. That was the only significant blow in those 11 hours he made.

Finally, Cracker stating he didn't like pain is completely irrelevant, sorry. Whether he told Luffy that or not, Luffy would have tried to hit him nonetheless, thus, inflict pain; the revelation of his detesting of pain didn't change anything whatsoever. It's not a weakness.

His ability was simply extremely powerful; each clone strong enough to take on a Gear 3rd punch shows how hard the biscuits are. Even the fact that flying into his biscuit resulted in his KO reveals how hard they are.

This was a case where the ability was simply overpowered. All Nami did was try to even it out. If Cracker had fought Luffy with his actual body from the get-go, the fight would have ended quickly in Luffy's favour.

Cracker's ability here acted as a plot-device for the story to stall Luffy just like in Skypiea where Luffy was in the belly of the snake. If Luffy had met Enel initially, the entire arc would have been a rather short one.

Too much on the defensive, are we? :chu Cool down, HP. I even stated I like your post.

To be fair, I don't think I am downplaying Cracker.

We don't know that for sure, but granted, that could be half right. Only half right, though, sice what we do know for sure is that the first clone, or armor (what he called it initially), was imbued with Haki, Haki stronger than any other Luffy had ever met.

Unaguarbly false. Strength of Haki is extremely relevant, but it's not everything. I never said it was, though, so assuming that to be my position from now on would be a strawman. Even so, I'm not persuaded that Luffy's physical strenghth is greter than Cracker's. After all,

Also, when Cracker as taking on Luffy, it was his biscuit clone fighting, not Cracker using his own actual strength or body.
This was only one part of the fight, one part I never denied. The only thing I disagreed about this part was that it was completely DF-dependent, rather than DF + Haki dependent. It's not entirely clear whether the armor did all the work or was "helped" by his own power, but what we do know for sure is that he was using Haki. I'm happy in assuming it did all the work except for the haki, though. After all, it was unable to hold a G4 attack, which supports the theory. Rather, what I was refering to was this part here, which tells a completely different story about Cracker's physical strength:

This was not a cookie. This was his own combo of physical strength + Haki + swordsmanship, and, unlike the clone/armor, it was enough to cause a deep cut in Luffy's G4 form. We do know his Haki is better than Luffy's, but the combo was still stronger than Luffy's physical strength + G4 + L's Haki. Since you yourself acknowledges Haki is not everything in a Haki imbued attack, we can certainly surmise that his attack stregth may be superior to Luffy's. The fact that it was strong enough to do so, while the haki imbued clone was not, actually supports my theory, i.e., that his physical strength is superior to Luffy's as well. One thing is for sure, it's superior both to his cookies' and to Doflamingo's. Neither the clones, nor the armor nor DF were able to inflict that kind of damage, and we have good reasons to believe Doflamingo was physically stronger than non-G4 Luffy:

Given that the deep cut was inflicted in G4 Luffy, we actually have some evidence that Cracker's physical strength, at least in sword attacks, may be superior to G4. What is certain is that it is superior to G4’s physical resistance, as well as to the damage from all the clones’ and DF’ attacks.

We also know that Cracker's ability requires no stamina whatsoever, all it takes is a clap to summon a biscuit.

True, Luffy's stamina is probably greater. I never said anything to the contrary, though.

Cracker never even fought Luffy head on. It was always with clones because he never wanted it to be a 1 on 1 situation.
Easily explainable by the fact, admitted by him, that he has little pain resistance. What may suggest that he has weaker physical resistance overall, although not neccessarily. In any case, that's a possibility. What it does not suggest is that his physical strength, i.e. his ability to inflict damage by his own physical strength is weaker than Luffy's, much less that it is weak. And while it was never a one x one fight, every hit dealt by his own power inflicted damage in Luffy, even in G4 form, while Luffy may never has even touched him, which means that, even with the cookies helping him, his speed is not just for show either.

Almost no character in the OP universe goes out of his way to go easy on the enemy. Even the fact that he was not full blown at the beginning is explainable by his preference to hide his ability in order to have greater informational advantage against other enemies. He always used his clones, just like Luffy would have done if his ability was his, but it does not follow that he is 100% reliant on them, just as it does not follow that Luffy is 100% reliant on been made of rubber just because he is made of rubber 100% of the time (i.e., unless he is touched by Kairouseki or Black Beard). I already showed how both assumptions are unarguably false. Besides his ability and its usage, Luffy has also speed, streghth and haki working for him. Cracker obviously has all three as well. His haki was obviously superior at that point, his speed was great enough for Luffy never to touch him (i.e. greater than Doflamingo's) and all evidence seems to point out that his strength may be even greater than Luffy's, and it's certainly greater than G4's resistance with Haki (which means it's greater than DF's and the cookies', and thus greater than non G4 Luffy).

There is enough ground for we to guess that Luffy may be overall faster, but it's not 100% sure. What seems more reasonable is to guess that Luffy has better stamina, better pain resistance and, overall, perhaps better resistance as well. Nothing more than that.

The only time he attacked Luffy without his clones was only when he assumed Luffy couldn't move.
False, as shown above. Evidence points he is stronger than his cookies. He attacked Luffy before, and with greater results than the cookie clones were able to attain. What I think really happened was that, once the first G4 was up, Luffy started getting defensive until Nami was able to weaken the cookies. From that point onwards, the combat became a battle of attrition. Even so, Cracker was still with the upper hand until the last transformation. So, I do grant he may not have received one hit, but he was not defeated by one either.

There is no evidence of that, like I have just shown. I never said he had any excuses. Neither have I suggested he did not have advantages from his attacks. He is stronger than Luffy (well, probably; unless one of us is psychotic, neither I nor you know that 100% for sure), but he is less resistant (probably). What is one 100% sure is that he is less resistant to pain, but I'm happy in guessing he is less resistant overall. Does not change the strong suggestion that he is stronger. Actually, he is so strong that Luffy cannot block his attacks. He has to evade them. And, granted, Cracker is a master at evasion, but, like Doflamingo pointed out, so is Luffy, who is not the strongest or even second strongest character already shown fighting, but who may be second or third best at speed, after Borsalino and Hakuba. Being reliant on evasion does not even suggest either character has issues with resistance, though, since Cracker admitted he has, we can assume that for him, and that explains why he is so good at it, but also so strong. He is probably stronger, but less resistant. It has no relatin whatsoever to "excuses" for winning or losing. You're getting too attached to the characters to really analyze them rationally.

Oh, please! Of course he was tricked. Now you are suggesting Luffy is stupid. Besides, you are are merely playing on the semantics. He was immobilized, lost contact with the ground and any means of attriction against the attack, and then was shot at his own cookies. He was unarguably tricked. Which does not mean Luffy had an advantage here, for God's sake. I did not suggest that either. Try to analyze this with a cool head. It just means Luffy had to use his head, what actually is a merit on his part, a merit I'm not sure can usually be attributed to him.

He knew he was fighting against an enemy who, evidence suggests, was stronger than him, who had an overall stronger ability, even against G4, but who he knew had very little resistance to pain, and perhaps little resistance overall for his standardads. He used his head and thought of a way to trick him. Would have he guessed Cracker to have problems with resistance had he not told him? Probably, since it was obvious. That was my assumption from the start. That's why I did not suggest he was actually advantaged by the information in my previous post, despite the strawman above. As evidence for the reader to get an idea of what kind of fighter Cracker is, however, this is not irrelevant. This is a foundational information that confirms what his weakness actually is, thus leaving less room to interpretation. And of course it's a weakness. Saying it's not is nonsense. Give Luffy some credit for his actual merits, for once.

His ability was simply extremely powerful; each clone strong enough to take on a Gear 3rd punch shows how hard the biscuits are. Even the fact that flying into his biscuit resulted in his KO reveals how hard they are.
Yes, his ability was extremely powerful, but not just extremely powerful. His ability was stronger than Luffy's, his Haki was stronger than Luffy's too, his physical strength was probably stronger than Luffy's as well and his speed was at the very least close, which is not true of DF's, for instance. His only weakness was his little resistance, which just goes to show how important resistance really is. If you are not resistant, been reliant on close fighting agains strong enemies, even those weaker than you, is dangerous. And, yes, Luffy is strong. Probably not quite as strong as Cracker, though, even on physical stregth alone. I never said Cracker would have won the fight if he did not have a DF. Against G4 Luffy, he would certainly have lost. Against regular Luffy, perhaps he would have lost. No one knows that, since it's mere speculation.

There is no evidence suggesting that. Like shown above, he may be less resistant, but there is much suggesting he is stronger, and nothing, really, suggesting otherwise.

And now let's move on to the main point of my previous post, which you did not address. Cracker was not defeated by one punch, not even any punch, not even a G4 punch. He was tricked into a position into which he had no means of resistance, then shot against his own biscuits, which were the bodies that really dealt the damage. Of course, the shooting power was G4's, and played a good part in the attack, and the fact he could not resist it was probably a an aggravating factor. Just goes to show that Luffy's G4 is great both in strength and in flexibility, but it does not directly suggest that regular G4 punchs would have been enough. Perhaps King Kong would, but Cracker could evade it, which means Luffy's move, which was yes, a trick, was actually the smartest one he could have used. Kudos to him. And, of course, Cracker tricked Luffy as well, but that's beside the point. After all, tricking the enemy, in my perspective, is a form of strength. Unlike suggested in the strawmen above, I never really meant that Luffy was weaker for using a trick. But, yes, Cracker was stronger than him, and without help, who is to say how many rounds it would get Luffy to be able to defeat him. Cracker's case holds a better analogy to Crocodile's, also weak in resistance, than to Enel's, though Cracker may be (and probably is) stronger than Luffy physically, while Crocodile was not.

Too much on the defensive, are we? :chu Cool down, HP. I even stated I like your post.
Lol nah I don't mean to come across that way. I was just saying.

Cracker cutting Luffy isn't proof that he is stronger. Even Bellamy has hurt Luffy with his punch, it doesn't make him stronger. All it showcases was that he caught Luffy off-guard and he didn't even cut the entire arm off.

Just because someone has strong Armament Haki means nothing; you can have stronger Armament Haki, but still be weaker overall. That is what Luffy showcased when he beat the Gorgon sisters.

Luffy also has no choice but to use his ability; Cracker does have a choice.

Everything Cracker did that was exceptional was with his clone. Cracker has the option to fight without clones but never did. That's why even at the end of the fight, he's still making use of them.

Cracker's ability is the only reason he was so formidable. Even with Luffy fighting 4-5 clones at the same time, he still couldn't cut Luffy or completely catch him off-guard. The only reason he initially cut him was because Luffy thought he had defeated Cracker, but turns out he was inside the clone. He had the advantages in numbers and yet still failed.

It's a given that if you're hit with a sword, of course you'll be cut.

This is a guy whose ability allows him to make use of biscuits harder than steel and control multiple at the same time without any impact to his stamina. It's not like the biscuits strength is derived from his own - their strength is only due to their structure and the quality of his craftsmanship as he explicitly stated.

We don't know that for sure, but granted, that could be half right. Only half right, though, sice what we do know for sure is that the first clone, or armor (what he called it initially), was imbued with Haki, Haki stronger than any other Luffy had ever met.

Unaguarbly false. Strength of Haki is extremely relevant, but it's not everything. I never said it was, though, so assuming that to be my position from now on would be a strawman. Even so, I'm not persuaded that Luffy's physical strenghth is greter than Cracker's. After all,

True, Luffy's stamina is probably greater. I never said anything to the contrary, though.

Basically, Even though Vergo was so confident in his amazing haki, Law's ability which was a complete hack didnt cut him?? In hand to hand combant or sword to bamboo stick combat, im certain vergo woulda whooped law, but due to laws op Ability he decimated him in seconds.
Now, a similar situation, luffy's ability was close combant based, cracker's was versatile, it can be close long or whatever he wants it to be, so this already puts luffy at a massive disadvantage, but somehow because luffy needed a little help to be able to get closer to cracker you think that make him weak. Hell no Cracker had fuck knows how many buscuit soldiers and it was more like 10 vs 2 so its still unfair if you look at it that way.
Real quick let me set a scenario for Doffy vs CrackerDoffy awakens, turns all of cracker'sbuscuits to strings and kills cracker with it.
Here is the thing, Luffy was stronger than cracker, he got lucky against doflamingo, and he's probably as strong as top commanders in yonkou's crew. because i dont think Rayleigh did a sloppy job on his training of luffy. If you think 2years ago luffy, a kid without Haki was able to fight in the war of the best with monsters from new world, and 2years after training he's still a push over, your making a mistake.
Anyways all i need to point out still is that people need to stop assuming characters are the strongest based on their bounty. Personally, i dont think Dragon is the strongest in the series because he's the most wanted man in the world. No, for all i know he probably just has a good team, and knows how to cause havoc. I mean if he was that formidable, how did blackbeard chase him off his own home ground.

You are right, Even when Dragon had his bounty revealed, Whitebeard was said to be the strongest. If bounty purely relates to strength, Whitebeard would have the highest bounty.

Bounty is made up of many factors. Political influence, strength, ability type, capacity for collateral damage, etc.

Robin at the age of 8 had a bounty of 79 million while Boa Hancock had a bounty of 80 million for a raid; it is unlikely Hancock is only as strong as an 8 year old Robin. We know Hancock's bounty was due to her strength while Robin's was for her knowledge. Bounty basically just tells us a character is dangerous, but it doesn't give us the details as to why they have that bounty. More or less, without a context or history of the character, bounty doesn't tell us much besides the Government deem that individual as dangerous, otherwise, we'd be saying Robin at the age of 8 is as strong as Hancock.

We see Pedro and Brook siting inside the Biscuit.

Based on that we can deduce and also see Cracker doing the exact same thing.

So we know for a fact Cracker was just chilling inside while it did all the work. All he contributed was Haki to a clone was animated by his power magically - not his physical imput.

The fact that their hideout was found out was enough of a reason to move to somewhere else, highly doubt it had anything to do with a power struggle.

Okay it was not a great example since i barely have any info on thhe skirmish at baltigo, but if Dragon being the strongest due to his most wanted bounty. decimating blackbeard shouldnt have been a chore for him. but they said BB fought with CP0 before escaping.
So in essence i was just pointing out that Dragon probably isnt the strongest in the series.

Not saying that he is/isn't, but Dragon also has no interest in fighting with pirates, only the WG, so it would be understandable if he didn't want to fight BB.

Thats not true, if someone i have no interest in is knocking on my door with shouts of war, id meet them at the door war ready.
just saying. but who knows dragon probably evacuated before BB got there but im just saying he isnt the strongest, as Oda has given that title to different people.

Before the conflict with BB, Dragon clearly stated that he wanted to call for a meeting with all the Revolutionaries commanders, because he was on the move and they had stuff to do.

Dragon is fighting for freedom all over the world, he wouldn't just engage in some pointless, petty argument with pirates when his actions and goals are considerably above those of a pirate.

He has better things to do than indulge someone like Blackbeard.

Hey, probably a weird question, but: When does the One Piece story get more directed? I've watched the first fifty episodes before, a long while back, didn't enjoy much aside from Zoro, so I dropped the series. I've also watched the arc about Doflamingo, on insistence from a friend, and it seemed a lot better than I remembered OP being. So, when does OP get the quality that arc had? I know the characters and a lot about the story (thanks Tekking), so I could really pick it up anywhere along the line if it's getting good. My main gripe about OP when I gave it my first shot was the story didn't seen to have any drive to it, it was kind of just them wandering around gathering people or getting lost and semi-randomly beating someone up.

:facepalm His base was getting plundered. why would he not defend it. its ridiculous you'd say that because his fight is with WG he wont defend his base, now former base against a pirate.

The fact that someone (doesn't matter who) found their base is enough of a reason for them to forget about it and move somewhere else, because they can no longer stay there. That, coupled with all the other reasons makes staying and fighting extremely pointless for the revolutionaries, also not in their best interest.

One thing that I think Oda just screwed up was Ace being the second in charge in WB's crew even without Haki or any kind of armament.

Ace was supposed to be in the same level of power of guys like Cracker or Katakuri. I know that haki was only explained for us years later, but still.
Today, we can see small fries using haki, when the 2nd in charge in WB's crew's couldn't. We can see that in Ace's battle against BB and against Smoker.

____My post was kind of offtopic.
