Ace was supposed to be in the same level of power of guys like Cracker or Katakuri. I know that haki was only explained for us years later, but still.
Today, we can see small fries using haki, when the 2nd in charge in WB's crew's couldn't. We can see that in Ace's battle against BB and against Smoker.

Ace didnt need haki to face BB since the Yomi Yomi no mi makes haki unecesary and he didnt need it against smoker because that fight wasnt to the death, it was just a clash.

No one knows if ace had haki or not since it was only til after the timeskip that haki became visible and regularly noted

Actually, I think haki makes your hits more powerful, and it's not only to hit logias types. The demonstration of what I'm saying you can see here

and also here

If Ace had it, he could use to inflict more damage in BB. That's why I'm saying that he hadn't haki.

I see what your saying, but oda greatly changed the aspects of haki after the timeskip. Look at Whitebeard. No one doubts he has haki, but he didnt desplay it a single time during the war except when he quaked Akainu's face in. It was only after the time skip that haki was shown to power up attacks and not just coat your body to hit logia

It's really an age old discussion but I think it's logical to assume he could for the simple fact that his first haki experience was when he was a kid (so earlier than Luffy) and he spent the better half of his pirate life in the new world surrounded by haki users. He would have likely picked up haki naturally during his time with WB pirates as most people do who don't train for two years, considering he was also meant to be one of the more talented fighters and fucking kuja scrubs can use haki. It's almost impossible for a fighter of Ace's caliber to have not been to use haki at this point. It's just that Ace was introduced in a time when Logias seemed unbeatable and powers in general were underdeveloped. To be honest even Marco and Co suffered from this a little. Compared to Jack, Katakuri and hell even Doflamingo, Marco and Jozu don't seem all that impressive anymore but I reckon the next time we see Marco, he'll be a whole new beast since the general power levels would have been updated a little.

It's always a problem writing high level fights at underdeveloped stages in a manga because of power inflation, and so what might have seemed high level in the past becomes underwhelming. See Naruto. Overtime, fights get bigger. They have to, but because of that it's hard to really compare a fight that was written over a decade ago to current fights. I think it's best to make logical assumptions with stuff like this and since we've seen how powerful people of Ace's rank are supposed to be, there's really no reason to believe he was any different.

First, Bb df is yami yami no mi, while yomi yomi is brooks, second, there is no evidence that yami yami no mi makes haki unecesary, what it actually does is, it will neutralize df, makes every df users useless against it

As for ace has haki or not, yes he does, in flash back when he still kids and trying to save luffy from those pirates ( i dont remember their names) he activated his Haoshoku. So clearly he has 1 of 3, as for another 2, well we never got to know...

In my opinion, long works such as One Piece always undergo some sort of retcon to factor in the inevitable escalation of power levels.

The real challenge here is to make the changes smooth enough that they don't contradict established canon.

Trying to retroactively explain the absense of Haki before it's proper introduction will not to work well because the concept was developed in order to explain how absurdly powerful DF's couldn't be used to beat the likes of Shanks and Mihawk who otherwise would have no means of countering them.

Haki's current definitions are primarily to fill logic gaps and keep power levels consistent, in past situations when those logic gaps didn't show up there was no need to explain it through Haki.

Yes, he had it... but never used it. This part of the flashback was just a way to "fix" the gap, I think... because if he had it ~ truly from the beginning, why he didn't used it?. Maybe the idea of the CoA emerged after few years, when the battle between BB and Ace was already settled. I just made a comment about one mistake, what is pretty normal, specially in works like one piece, with more than 15 years. Oda has a lot a credits, and it isn't anything SO serious, just a slip. :P

What? Yami Yami no mi is the only logia that doesnt require you to need haki to land a hit on BB because the nature of the fruit makes the user unable to become intangible.

That the biggest weakness of the fruit and was introduced in its first use. You dont need haki to land a hit on a Yami Yami no Mi user

You do not need haki to counter a Yami Yami no Mi logia user because they cant let attacks through them in the first place. Thats the basis of the fuit lol

Hi
First post in a long time but pretty sure Ace demonstrated that he had conquerer's Haki in a flashback when he, Sabo and Luffy were kids (knocked out a bunch of pirates). With other members of WB's crew having Haki you would imagine Ace did as well it just wasn't shown by Oda because he hadn't explained it yet.

I am pretty sure Ace had Haki.

Sabo and Ace are literally the same character, thus the reason they parallel each other.

Ace and Sabo had defeated each other roughly 25 times (Ace had 26 wins while Sabo had 24).

By the time Sabo was 19, we see him using Armament Haki; at this point in time, Ace was also making waves. There's no way that characters who have been portrayed as substitutes of each other wouldn't possess Haki because Sabo was already exercising Armament when Ace was known as a big-shot; they were both already big shots at the same age which draws and returns us back to the parallels they share.

It's unlikely that Sabo would have been a Haki user while Ace wouldn't have been one especially since he was an exceptional fighter who was slightly superior to Sabo.

The reason why Ace died was so that Sabo could become relevant, both couldn't exist at the same time; this is why Sabo recovered his memory only after Ace had died. They're in essence 2 sides of the same coin.

Ace in his battle against Smoker doesn't prove he was no Haki user; Fire and Smoke can't do anything against each other, no reaction. Ace just didn't want to fight because he had bigger fish to fry; all he wanted to do was stall Smoker so Luffy could escape and he could also get on his way to find Blackbeard.

Also, pre-skip, Oda never highlighted Haki because he hadn't explained it to us yet - we only really know what the SHs know, so we see things from their perspective - what they do not know, we don't know - they were clueless about Haki, so, we were also clueless - even if Oda highlighted it, we still wouldn't have understood it back then. It's only after Haki was explained (to the SHs whom we learn from primarily) by Rayleigh that Oda starts highlighting Haki.

Hey, I just thought of something funny. Caesar was going to show up while Big Mom was screaming, right? However, since Big Mom's fit didn't start until after Caesar arrived, suppose he got struck by the blast of Conqueror's Haki, too? That would definitely put a crimp in the escape plan.
Possible as Caesar hasn't shown the ability to withstand the haki, has he? And he's scared shitless of Big Mom too.
The flashback is a signal. Big Mom will fall in this arc.
Deal with it.

Er, Luffy did not finish the fight with Fujitora, AND when he was planning on getting Sanji back, he said he wouldn't fight Big Mom. It's not like he's running away forever, he's just there for one reason only, and he needs to accomplish that goal.

That's actually one of my favorite flashback. The top is probably Skypiea. The meh flashback imo is the one that's short, like Zoro and Ussop flashback. But different stroke of taste I suppose.
I think most are meh. The not-so-short ones stretch too much, like Otohime's or even Luffy's, and I actually kinda like Luffy's.
Yeah Luffy defeating Doflamingo was meh to me, I thought it was too soon. But given how much Doflamingo feared Kaido the different's between Yonko and Shichibukai seems to be enormous, as well as I think Cracker most likely could of beaten Luffy if not for plot armour.
Too soon how? It was believable, and he had help. It's not like he won on a 1vs1 fair fight. Plus, it didn't look like there was plot armor that caused Cracker to lose, Luffy once again had help in Nami.

And it's not technically difference between Yonkou and SHichibukai, but difference between Kaidou and Doflamingo. Mihawk is a shichibukai, but he and Shanks still fought many times... although this was before Shanks became a Yonkou.

That was actually another problem I had with it. I was hoping that Luffy would defeat Doflamingo when he was at full strength. Having an edge like Law's Gamma Knife makes it unknown if Luffy's strength actually surpassed Doflamingo's. I'm okay with Luffy having a handicap, but not an edge. Compared to his victories against Crocodile and Eneru, Luffy's defeat of Doflamingo felt a little cheapened, which only makes it worse as I saw Doflamingo as a greater threat than those two.

Kinda hypocritical. But it was kinda clear Luffy's strength did not surpass Doflamingo's as he needed help beating Doflamingo, from Law and from the Coliseum participants.

And similar would be here, BIg Mom would be weakened by her emotions, and if Luffy has severe difficulty beating her with help, it shows she's still superior to him.

I thought he was wearing pure white from the start?
He was wearing white and black pants in the beginning I think. It's the wedding where he started with the all white attire.

Hypocritical?

You clearly do not grasp the dynamics of battle in One Piece at all.

Magellan took a punch from Luffy and fell to his knee.

Yet, he took out Blackbeard in one attack which guaranteed his death had Shilieuw not appeared with the antidote.

By your superficial logic, Magellan would therefore be superior to Whitebeard who is classed as the strongest man in the world and Sengoku who couldn't even with their powers decimate Blackbeard in 1 attack..

That fact just makes it feel even cheaper!
Weird if you don't have a problem with Luffy beating weakened Big Mom, though. In any case, Luffy hasn't always won his fights fairly or by being stronger, but by luck, help, and/or stamina. Funny thing is, Luffy still isn't or wouldn't look weak, especially given his stamina. Despite how Luffy beat DOflamingo, I can't imagine anyone seeing him even remotely weak, and even if he gets out without fighting Big Mom, it's not due to him being weak, but due to how exhausting the fight against Big Mom and her crew would be, especially when Luffy doesn't seem to be ready.

Would be weird that Luffy promises to never run away, but it's this exact thing that got Ace killed when he should have been smart enough to run.

I grasp more than you do. Magellan took a punch from Luffy, stood back up, took another punch without being affected, and proceeded to poison Luffy and take him out. THe next fight he took Luffy's punches that were reinforced with wax like nothing and kept trying to fight him, forcing Luffy to run in order to save Ace. Clearly you ignore what you want and focus on what agrees with you. Otherwise you'd also point out how Magellan got back up, took another hit like nothing, and proceeded to wreck Luffy, who'd have been dead without Bon and Iva.

"Superficial." Funny because for all anyone knows, Magellan could beat Whitebeard if Whitebeard didn't protect himself well and doesn't have immunity to poison. Wouldn't make him the strongest, but as Crocodile said or hinted, devil fruit matchup counts. Mr. 3's devil fruit can counter Magellan's, but Whitebeard's devil fruit might not counter poison.

And labels are for hype. I'd go into depth, but no point with someone like you. Try thinking deeper than what characters just say, and then maybe you'll understand One Piece better.

Because it was useless. At the end of an arc of 100 chapters no one want to stay add Dressrosa for the much

I'm hoping that Luffy's fight with Big Mom won't happen until after the events on Wano are resolved, when the whole crew is finally together again since Dressrosa (not to mention stronger with the added addition of Jinbe and possibly a few others). .
So this whole arc was a waste of time ?

Here's how I see it.

Why fixate on who was the stronger of the two? Luffy won, whether he is stronger or not. I've never understood: why do we need to know exactly who would beat the other in a "fair" fight? One Piece isn't a story where that's relevant. It isn't like Dragonball where there are one-on-fights and whoever has the higher "power level" (hate that term) wins. The plot is what is important, and if Luffy beats Doflamingo or Big Mom or whoever with the help of others, they're still friggin' beaten and the plot moves forward. No one is going to say "Nah, hold on a minute, there's like 500 guys in on this plot to take out Big Mom so now we have to wait until she wakes up so we can settle who is actually stronger and is allowed to win".

As Mihawk said in the war (I'm paraphrasing): Luffy's greatest ability isn't his devil fruit or fighting strength; it's how he keeps turning people around him into allies. And that's how he's going to become the Pirate King. As much as some readers might not like it, Luffy is never going to be the strongest man in the One Piece universe, but that doesn't mean he won't beat those who are actual contenders for said title.

Surely people missed the fact that Luffy stated he'll beat the shit out of BM 3 times already... You can't say that Luffy only said he'll save Sanji and leave
I am tired of this debate, few chapters to go and we'll see who got it right and who got it wrong
Lol, selective reading is a powerful thing. Some people just can't read between the lines no matter how obvious.

You really do not grasp that much.

If we go back to previous chapters, all you've said is:
  1. Luffy has no allies.
  2. He only has half his crew.
  3. There's no way he'll find out about Brook.
  4. Pretty sure you even implied Cracker would defeat him.
  5. And that he'd probably even ally with Big Mom despite te fact we know Big Mom was already mad with him and he challenged her.
Unless Brook can communicate that with others, moot point right now. It's not an excuse when Luffy doesn't know.

And yet, Luffy hasn't eaten anything yet. And I thought that was meat that allowed Luffy to recover quickly. If he's captured, he'd have to find a way to get food, which likely wouldn't be easy. He won't win this arc if he's the way he is, power-wise or health-wise.

So far, Gear 4 has done nothing against Cracker himself, and the clones were challenging Luffy as it was. We don't know if he is fragile (likely is), or if he just doesn't like pain.

Because Big Mom doesn't know what happened to Cracker or why he's so late? They have confidence in Cracker, as your image shows, but her asking can just as easily mean she thinks Luffy was stronger than they thought, just not strong enough.

Ergo, weaker than Crocodile. WHitebeard wouldn't lose to Crocodile because he was one of the strongest men when alive and knew haki. Luffy did not, and despite using water to help him, he still nearly got owned by Crocodile. Luffy would win because again, it was only Crocodile that hinted at the challenge Luffy would face, while nothing implied Crocodile's subordinates (bar Mr. 2) could beat Luffy easily. There's a difference between going up against a shichibukai, where Luffy up that point wasn't challenged, and going up against a Yonkou, against whose subordinate Luffy can't even do anything to without resorting to his strongest technique.

That is not a literal fact. He's never won against an admiral or Magellan. Before you say "main antagonist of arc!!" they count because they were antagonists, especially Aokiji even though he let Robin and Luffy go, albeit frozen.

How many arc has had Luffy be overwhelmed by a subordinate? Hell, Hodi got owned by Zoro, he had no chance against Luffy. When Luffy was in trouble, like against Arlong or Buggy, it wasn't because he was overpowered, but because he incapacitated, like sticking his feet too deep in the ground or getting tossed in a cage with no way out. The only reason why Caesar took out LUffy was because of his devil fruit, otherwise Luffy would have beaten him otherwise.

If Luffy can't beat Cracker or has severe difficulty beating Cracker, and Big Mom is stronger, then Luffy has no chance against her unless he somehow magically gets stronger or has help fighting Big Mom, more than he did against Doflamingo. When Luffy got owned by Lucci, we had every indication that it wouldn't be a roflstomp, and then Nami confirmed it when she said Luffy and Zoro's weakness was that they were unsure. Against Crocodile, Luffy hinted his victory when he realized water could affect sand. And so far in the arc, only Doflamingo gave Luffy any sort of challenge, whereas most others were defeated eventually.

It is not a self-conflicting statement. Cracker doesn't have to be defeated for Luffy to save Sanji, all it takes is for Luffy to be alive and be able to recover, if not somehow be saved. He's not alone either, he has Nami, Brook, and Pedro.

I think Cracker might defeat Luffy, but I'm hoping Luffy beats Cracker.

He doesn't win all the time. Just try rereading the manga, Luffy loses quite a few times. If Luffy won all the time, he'd be a pirate king by now. Seems like you do not know what facts are.

Yes he does, but nothing states he has to do it in one arc, or as soon as possible. As you said, every arcs have ended with Luffy winning. Why can't Luffy lose this arc, have some mini-arcs, and then beat Big Mom at the end of the same arc? This has happened in many arcs, even.

Yes, and that's because Luffy's good at talking and being likable, as well as the kind of person he is. He could be weak as hell, and Shanks and Rayleigh would still have faith in him because he reminds them of Roger... in fact, he reminds many characters of Roger.

It means Jinbei has faith in Luffy, not that Luffy is able to beat everyone right off the bat. Irrelevant point. I have faith in Luffy too, just not blind faith that I think he'll beat a captain when he was getting owned without Gear 4.
In this quote of yours below, you even stated Luffy wouldn't be able to find food to replenish his energy? - It shows how much you're fixtated on the idea Luffy would lose. Not at all sound logic; this is a Shounen Manga for one.

He's not going to be executed by Big Mom right off the bat, she'd want to rub it in his face and make him watch Sanji get married. And it's not like LUffy hasn't lost before either or come close to being executed, he'll somehow be saved if it even gets to that point.

What? It's pretty similar to Dressrosa given Luffy's just as likely to be killed, but unlike Doflamingo, Big Mom is way out of Luffy's league. He either has to get out of there one way or another or get some sort of power-up that puts him above Cracker. Whether or not there's a fight, Luffy's gonna lose either way given the damage he took and his power level. He's gonna have to reveal something soon, if not hope he can get help or avoid fighting Big Mom in his current situation.
This is just 1 or 2 of your so many insightful posts regarding this arc from Chapter 838 and they've all proven to be wrong because the Manga did the opposite of whatever you assumed would occur.

Most of what you've said has lacked much insight for the most part or you'd be accurate with the majority of what you've stated.

Also, you really do not understand anything about battle. You claim Cracker to be superior when all he really had going was an ability that gave him an advantage; it's no different to Magellan only being able to take out Blackbeard simply because he had an ability that killed on contact - nothing to do with him being superior to Blackbeard or even Luffy. No powerful character at that point in time could be dropped to their knee from taking a punch from Luffy pre- timeskip; Magellan did.

The level of your assessment is extremely shallow; your entire reason for stating why Luffy won't fight Big Mom is because "he's here to save Sanji", if you read the Manga properly, you'd know how Luffy's priorities changed once the situation did.

Who said I want Luffy to beat while she's in this state? That's one of the reasons I hope Bege's assassination attempt fails: I want Luffy to fight her when she's at her strongest, to see how he truly measures up to a Yonko now. Of course, I also want the Straw Hats to fight a Yonko crew when they're at their strongest, which is why I'm hoping that Luffy's fight with Big Mom won't happen until after the events on Wano are resolved, when the whole crew is finally together again since Dressrosa (not to mention stronger with the added addition of Jinbe and possibly a few others). After all, you heard Jinbe's comment in the chapter before the Straw Hats allied with Bege: by ruining her tea party (along with the wedding cake, her plan to get her mitts on Germa, and diminishing her forces along with stealing her Poneglyphs out from under her nose), they'll be facing the full strength of her organization. I doubt Oda would put a line like that in if nothing would come of it.
Now, he'd most likely lose to a Yonkou, tbh. Nothing has stated Luffy has a chance against Big Mom if she's stronger than Doflamingo or Cracker. THere's no reason to believe she's not if she's been a Yonkou for as long as she has despite blackmailing people. I hope Luffy's fight happens after this arc, but before he faces Kaidou if Kaidou's stronger or superior to Big Mom. But I don't think Straw Hats need to be together; on Dressrosa the Straw Hats beat Doflamingo without Sanji, Chopper, or Nami.

There are many ways that the full strength of Big Mom's crew can come at the Straw Hats, whether or not she's defeated.
Because it was useless. At the end of an arc of 100 chapters no one want to stay add Dressrosa for the much

So this whole arc was a waste of time ?
Nevertheless, Luffy did not fight Fujitora. Just as he did not fight and beat Magellan, Aokiji, or other admirals.

Yeeeeah, that was before Luffy said he was going to WCI to get Sanji back.
Lol, selective reading is a powerful thing. Some people just can't read between the lines no matter how obvious.
Damn, don't gotta be that mean to yourself just because you're bad at understanding and comprehending.
