Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

1. According to Ace novel he is confirmed stronger than Whitebeard so there is no conflict between titles during WB's lifetime.
2. No, we dont know when he got the title but we know he had it first time he was shown in manga.
3. We know that he doesnt want to fight one-armed has-beens so they probably didnt fight after he lost his arm.
4. Yes, we can deny that. Nobody is competing in who has the stronger slash.
5. Yes if he uses sword to fight among other things.

I'll bring sake for the discussion.
Haha. I'll drink along. Its seems we agree on most, but:

Are Ace Novel cannon? Has Oda stated this? Oda didnt write it right? Not that it matters a lot for the discussion.

So we do not agree on 4 and 5 if the worlds strongest slash represent sword skill in general. Lets swap worlds strongest slash with worlds strongest swords skill from here on.

The community seems to be split in 2 fractions:

One fraction that believe that the WSS is a measure of skill and one fraction that believe it's a measure of the strongest character with a sword.

No matter what fraction you belong, can you agree that it could be intrepeted in both ways?

And do anyone have proof that it cannot be intrepreted both ways? This is the bottomline. With not proof of this, the discussion is based on opinions and we can discuss forever. Which people already have.

1. Well, as canon as any outside manga material can be. It is not much but better than our individual opinions. Afaik, the editors write those.
Even if you take the individuals and analyze their powers it is not surprising that Kaido>WB, at least during last ~3 year which is how long OP lasts.
2. Why dont you agree on 4 and 5? Mihawk and Zoro fought and nobody mentioned who has a stronger slash between the two...
If you swap slash with sword skill, it remains the same. Several people have sword skill on Mihawk's level but it isnt enough to be WSS. Another novel has people in Dressrosa speculating who is the best swordsman among Zoro, Law, Vista and Mihawk based on their slashes/sword skill... Vista's sword skill has been said to be good enough to fight Mihawk but it hasnt made him into WSS.
3. It was never about the skill. Nothing is excluded from the fight. All abilities any swordsman possesses are allowed in a fight. Zoro's Asura, Fujitora's gravity, Cracker's biscuits, Law's Ope no Mi, guns, whatever one might have in addition to a sword...
4. There is no point for it being interpreted the other way since several people's skills are good enough to match Mihawk's and yet he isnt satisfied and he waits for someone to surpass Shanks.
5. I doubt anyone would bat an eye if WSS title belonged to Shanks but apparently it is an issue since it belongs to Mihawk since it connects him to Zoro...

Why would Oda give two WSx titles to nr1 and nr2 of the verse while 3rd WSx title not to nr3 in the verse? It makes 0 sense.
Mihawk, who is waiting for someone to surpass Shanks to finally have the challenge to satisfy his needs, apparently already can achieve such just by fighting Shanks. Also makes 0 sense. The thing that makes sense is that Shanks cannot provide him with excitement that he desires.
If Oda named someones "Worlds Strongest Botanist" would that person now be top 4 in the OP universe? If someone uses spears, and they are introduced as "Worlds Strongest Spearman", how do they fit in the ranking?

Basing things on epithets that don't actually say anything other than "he is the most skilled man with a sword" is beyond silly.

2. You may have a point about Zoro and Mihawk. If Zoro has to beat Mihawk to be the WSS then the only argument left for Shanks>Mihawk is that they haven't fought for the title in 12 years.
4. There may not be a point in yours eyes, but do you agree it can be intrepeted the other way? The thing about him waiting for someone to surpass shanks is not cannon is it? If so in what chapter/sbs?
5. I agree that it does not matter. Some people hate, some people love. This is not important for the discussion.

The only person making it an issue because it connects him to Zoro is you, thanks for proving my point on why this is even an issue!

More headcanon to help you prove nothing? When WS botanist and WS spearman appear you can say something, until then, good luck.

2. That isnt an argument either. Shanks has lost an arm and Mihawk wishes for someone to surpass Shanks to finally get the thrill of the battle he wants.
If Shanks was above him, he could get what he desires simply by fighting him but 2 years ago he said he isnt fighting one-armed has-beens...
4. I dont see how it can be interpreted the other way. The whole point of Mihawk's character is pointless if he isnt above Shanks. It is from Vivre cards.

The only person making it an issue because it connects him to Zoro is you, thanks for proving my point on why this is even an issue!
I am the only one who places Mihawk above Shanks, as the manga tells me to do considering it made Shanks into a swordsman...
You, however, create a thousand issues because you dont like it. Yeah, I am definitely the one for who it is an issue...

2. It is not the best argument no, but it is still possible. Look I'm kinda agreeing here XD. You turned me dude. The only solid proof imo is that Zoro's dream is to beat Mihawn, and hence not about sword-skill.
4. Can you find a link to that Vivre card info?

The Yonko are the 4 strongest, with the possible exception of the Admirals and other hidden forces we haven't met yet. WB was able to hold massive land. Once he died, his crew was pushed around and crushed by various groups, such as BB and Weevil.

Perospero also said that should BM die, her crew and empire would collapse.

So a Yonko crews power has been shown, in Manga, to mainly derive from the power of the Yonko themselves.

They don't even send an admiral to take out Mihawk now. Of course I think he'll get past the fleet sent to get him, but they are hardly classifying him a threat on the level of a Yonko if that's all they send to stamp him out. They did send an admiral to help take out Boa Hancock, but not Mihawk...

All of his proofs are either from translations he can't fine, books he hasn't read, or Vivre cards that he won't link to. Nothing from the actual manga, lol.

Shanks uses a sword, we haven't seen him fight in any way at all, so to call him a swordsman is literally your invention to prove your point. But what we do know is Shanks was so strong even after losing an arm, that he became a Yonko years later due to his immense strength. That is the only thing we actually do know. Everything else is you picking and choosing your "evidence" from whatever random source you can (a book Oda didn't write, a translation of a panel by some guy that you can't find right now, but you assure us it's accurate, a Vivre card, etc), but nothing from the actual text.

And all so you can try to convince people by the end of the manga that despite Luffy beating all Yonko, and whatever end boss there is, and becoming PK, Zoro will be stronger.

It's so sad.

2. If Shanks was stronger than Mihawk, he would be Zoro's goal, not Mihawk. Mihawk is the WSS, not Shanks... Kokuto>non-Kokuto. It is very simple.
4.

The Yonko are the 4 strongest
Kanji used in raws is the one that desribes Powerful(as powerful politicians) not as strongest.

Maybe the story wants Boa to be captured while it doesnt want an Admiral to die while trying to capture Mihawk? Ever thought of that?

I linked everything, you on the other hand, use fan translations to fit your arguments.

I call a swordsman anyone who fights with a sword and isnt carrying it for lulz. You are producing headcanon to avoid accepting a man who fights with a sword every time he was shown fighting, a swordsman...
Weevil became a Warlord. Did he become stronger because of the title? Getting a title makes someone strong?
Yes, Zoro will be stronger than Luffy because he always was, it was a draw in WP due to magical sword-defying flip-flops.

WSC and WSM being seperate titles is stupid enough, but they are referring to an all encompassing species.

Among all CREATURES Kaido is the strongest.

Among all HUMANS, Whitebeard is the strong.

Mihawk's title is NOT like Whitebeard's title or Kaido's title as his title is based on a particular skill set. No different than of Whitebeard was noted as the World's Strongest Naginata User or Akainu referred to as the World's Strongest Devil Fruit User.

Since we are playing with hypotheticals, he's this

With Whitebeard's title, if Vegapunk modified Kuma so much that he became stronger than Whitebeard, would've he get the title? Kuma is now more machine that human... but he's still a man. Does he become the WSM? No because he is no longer considered a man but a cyborg despite still being a man.

Mihawk's title becomes meaningless (now WAIT do not take this out of context) of anything other than swordsmanship is used. And this is why... if Mihawk fought Akainu and lost, does Akainu become the WSS despite never wielding a sword? No he wouldn't. If something other that swordsmanship is used Mihawk's title should seemingly be secured.

If Whitebeard lost to an animal. He doesnt lose his title. If Kaido lost to a ghost, he would still keep his title because his title encompasses AMONG ALL LIVING THINGS. If Mihawk fought someone that wasn't a swordsman, he wouldn't lose his title. And to back me up: Vista, Zoro, Mihawk, Ray, Oden, Ryuma... all solely swordsmen base fighters, 3 of which were considered the strongest at different points/ one praised as a King and their only means of fighting are swords.

It's why the majority know BM is stronger than Mihawk despite being a swordsman. While she is a swordsman, her fighting style is largely incumbent on her Devil Fruit. Same with Kizaru or even Fujitora.

There's my little pre-coffee thoughts for the day.

And another note to back up what I am saying...

If Fujitora and Mihawk fought for the title WSS and Fujitora DIDN'T uses his DF for the majority of the fight but at the end he used it (because he was losing) and that 1 gravity based attack caused Mihawk to lose the fight... is Fujitora now the WSS? Even tho Mihawk was proven to be the better swordsman and if Fujitora didn't use his DF he would have lost?

WSS is skillbased/ fightingstyle based. Where as WSC and WSM are all encompassing.

Akainu wouldnt become WSS because he doesnt use a sword in the first place. If Kizaru would beat Mihawk, he would become WSS.
Oda never excluded any ability which compliments a swordsman, that is your fabrication.
all solely swordsmen base fighters, 3 of which were considered the strongest at different points/ one praised as a King and their only means of fighting are swords.
Why is Law a swordsman considering several moves not sword related? Is King not a swordsman because he can use Fire? Is Queen not a swordsman because he uses plague? Is Jack not a swordsman because he uses Caesar's gas? Is Zoro not a swordsman because he uses Asura? Is Fujitora not a swordsman because he can use gravity?
If you think any of them would not use all at their disposal against Mihawk to obtain the title, think again.

"majority knows"... Majority thinks.* Difference. The only way BM can be above Mihawk is if she has WSSw title to differentiate the sex.

Yes, lol. He would be the WSS. Where has Oda prohibited anyone to use their powers besides the sword? Tell me where.

Time will tell where Mihawk stands, for now, it seems like he is above 2 swordsmen Yonkos.

Neither. But until Mihawk got the title, no one seems to have had it, so unless someone goes out and tries to make the title it just isnt created...

It's not my fabrication, more an educated guess and can't be disproved until we actually see a situation in which this is valid or invalid

I never said anywhere that they weren't swordsman, anywhere. I am not one of the those "He's not a PURE swordsman" type of debater. What I am saying is that if they beat Mihawk more with their DF or other powers then they can't possibly be better Swordsmen than Mihawk. They would have an advantage over Mihawk
If Fuji and Mihawk are swordsman of equal caliber and the only difference was Fuji's DF and that allows him to defeat Mihawk, its utter nonsense.

"majority knows"... Majority thinks.* Difference. The only way BM can be above Mihawk is if she has WSSw title to differentiate the sex.
No, Majority KNOWS... because it is obvious. But we will have to agree to disagree here.

Nik your the only one here so worried about titles, but in the story as a whole, Mihawk isn't important. YOU place far more importance on him than One Piece requires. Mihawk WAS 1/7th of only 1/3 of the Great Superpowers. His existance bears no weight other than for Zoro to achieve his dream. You think Oda just sits around and thinks of the WSS title and how it affects the structure of the One Piece world? Lol.

World's Strongest Ghost would be an amazing title to have.
Yes it would lol

Yes it would lol
So many good points here! I like your points about someone like BM beating him with a combination of her swordsmenship and DF. That doesn't make her the best most skilled sword user, it makes her stronger than him. That's it.

It's like saying a middleweight boxer is pound for pound the best boxer. That is a pure skill description. It doesn't mean he wouldn't get murdered by Tyson Fury. And Tyson Fury beating him wouldn't make him the pound for pound best boxer. It just means he was stronger in other ways that the PFP guy couldn't overcome with his skill alone.

Pure headcanon... Give me manga evidence where Oda says that you are allowed only to use the sword to beat Mihawk to be WSS.

Even Oden, Wano's greatest samurai of his time, was impressed by how Roger and Whitbeard's CoA clashed without their weapons touching.

For me this is the biggest demonstration of CoA so far

They were examples Nik. I'm not fabricating anything. Your harping on it way too much. That wasn't the point.

You are the one who claims that nothing but sword skill is allowed so the burden of proof is on you. Nice try to wiggle out...
No I didn't. I said the title pertains the the swordsmanship of the wielder and that the only thing that should matter. Not wiggling put of anything.

Pure headcanon... Give me manga evidence where Oda says that you are allowed only to use the sword to beat Mihawk to be WSS.
It's not headcanon. Its speculation. I'm not stating it as fact. Again proving you don't know what headcanon means. This is all discussion. You asked our opinion of the titles. If you didn't want an opinion why even ask?

Majority thinks.
Like I said, agree to disagree

Where did he prohibit other powers where titles are considered?
He doesn't... BEACUSE TITLES AREN'T IMPORTANT. The only title that matter in OP is Pirate King. All others are purely to hype the individual. No one is going after the title WSM or WSC. Your emphasis on titles is disturbingly irrelevant to One Piece lol.

More headcanon not helping your arguments...
Again with head canon. What was I wrong about....

Mihawk is only 1/7 of the Shichibukai
Shichibukai make up only a 3rd of the 3GSP
Mihawk isn't a factor in the story. He isn't an obstacle to OP for Luffy. He has no political power and he just does his own thing.

I'm starting to understand you claim people use headcanon to anything you don't want to accept as fact.

Glad you agree. I usually dont make points I can't back up and if I do I make sure to explain that I'm either speculating or it's just my opinion.

They were examples Nik. I'm not fabricating anything. Your harping on it way too much. That wasn't the point.
Examples which don't exist and aren't helping. Let's move on to something that can move the discussion on instead set it back...
No I didn't. I said the title pertains the the swordsmanship of the wielder and that the only thing that should matter. Not wiggling put of anything.
Has the author ever prohibited swordsmen to use other powers other than swords in any battle, whether it is for title or not? Get to the point if you have one.
It's not headcanon. Its speculation. I'm not stating it as fact. Again proving you don't know what headcanon means. This is all discussion. You asked our opinion of the titles. If you didn't want an opinion why even ask?
Ok. Has Oda ever prohibited a swordsman to use other powers when it comes to beating Mihawk?
Like I said, agree to disagree
There is nothing to disagree here. Majority thinks, it cannot possibly know such things.

Why is he using them if they arent important? From what we see Pirate King is more about others than about an individual, others who can decypher RP's for you and others who can get you to Raftel. My emphasis on titles is relevant in PL discussion which is where we are at.

How is this helping you determine Mihawk's power level? That's why I call it headcanon, bringing useless information to divert from the core of the discussion.
You dont have to answer it because it isnt helping you.

If Big Mom beat Mihawk is she the WSS? If not, what is the difference between Big Mom and Shanks? Pretty relevant imo.

And how is Big Mom different from Fujitora, Law, etc.?

*I call things that are factual as headcanon because they divert from a discussion....

Do you read what you type? Learn the definition of words before using it so confidently. It's not a good look for you.

As for the rest of you post, you asked for opinion and when you got it you threw a tantrum because you don't like the facts.

You can't agree to disagree nor can you make counter points to any on my comments with calling it my opinion... which is what you asked for when you started this.

Don't ask for our opinions about titles if you can't handle the opinions presented. Nothing I said was incorrect. You not wanting to accept simple truths is the only thing that keeps your discussions going on so long.

Titles as they pertain to power levels is irrelevant. It's the feats that matter and its feat that Mihawk lacks. That's why its questioned.

Mihawks best feat is being stopped by a YC twice and cutting a frozen tsunami. That's it. He's largely a mystery.

We would have to see how she fight? There are so many factors to consider. BM is immune to damage unless she is in despair or in her manic state so Mihawk would first need to figure out how hurt her.

Kaido fought Big Mom for hours and she didnt have a scratch on her. Of Kaido can't hurt her, I doubt Mihawk could.

It's pure speculation but the feats put her comfortably over Mihawk.

Queen was able to knock out a crazed Big Mom but she was clearly on herself and it was a sneak attack on top of that. Not sure if Mihawk could deal with her. It's probably an high diff fight for her.

We don't know how the title is transferred.

If her swordsmanship is shit but her overwhelming strength is what allows her to win... does she deserve the title? Is a more important question I believe.
