Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

When was he scared of Smoker? I've never seen Luffy react to anyone the way he reacts to Garp, and even Nami to an extent.

I think the fall in durability comes with age (Big Mom defies this logic). Whitebeard and Garp were pretty much shown to bleed easily. Doesn't take away the insane attack strength they pack. One hit from either even in their old age would be deadly! Akainu and Marco would attest to this. Lol.

Big Mom on the other hand hasn't been normal right from day one. It's implied that she grows in strength as she ages.
With a few exceptions, all characters in One Piece bleed easily.

Roger was executed by a pair of swords. Shanks had his arm bitten off by a Shark. Oden was executed with a shot on his head. Etc.

There are some anomalies like Kaido or Big Mom which body is almost invulnerable.

I'm assuming you mean on-screen/on-paper. It's been noted that virtually all pirates of the previous generation were wary of Garp. Just in case you forgot, he's one of only 2 marine combatants the PK would enjoy battling with and Roger noted how many times he's almost being killed by Garp and vice versa in his freaking prime.
Like I said, you must be talking about on-screen feats not feats in general cos Garp for the marines seem to represent what Roger is to pirates. A symbol and epitome of greatness!

Fun fact: I've not seen Luffy get scared shitless of anyone as he is of Garp.
Yeah, Garp has not shown anything on-screen.

When was he scared of Smoker? I've never seen Luffy react to anyone the way he reacts to Garp, and even Nami to an extent.
In Alabasta, Luffy decided it would be better to just run away from Smoker.

Here's a fun ranking in order of strength I thought of off the bat! You may or may not read in to it. In a sense it's my POV of how I see the elite characters in One Piece both alive and dead and their overall ranking taking in to perspective their combat strength in their prime - especially for those who are beyond that age/dead - and currently as the story goes.
Notice the 3 asterisked characters :) more explanation about why they are ranked there and my reason behind it...

Character : Tier

Roger: Legendary
Whitebeard: Legendary
Garp: Legendary
Xebec: Legendary
Sengoku: Legendary
Rayleigh: Legendary
Kaido: Great - Legendary
Shanks: Great - Legendary
Big Mom: Great - Legendary
*Oden: Great - Legendary
*Blackbeard: Great
Akainu & Aokiji: Great
Kizaru: Great
Fujitora & Ryokogyu: Great
*Mihawk: Great
Beckman: Great
Marco: Great
Katakuri: Great
King: Great
Weevil: Great
Tsuru: Great

From here on, the list broadens and accomodates too many characters mostly in the YC level category. Many of whom we are familiar with. I may decide to share my thoughts on those when I have the chance but I'll pause here for now.

So as for the asterisked trio:

1) The only reason Oden isn't in the Legendary tier is due to the fact that he died just before his prime (he was almost there). He definitely would have been at least on par with Rayleigh but an untimely death prevented that. I'm one of those who feel he might have reached a similar level to Roger and Whitebeard if only he lived like 20 years more. He was this close!

2) Blackbeard may be the freshest Yonko in terms of coronation - of course Shanks has the best looks and is the youngest of the 4 :^_^ - and that shouldn't be a judge of his strength compared to the rest but it just feels that way for me. He may as well be in the Great - Legendary tier of my list (sitting bottom) but I'd regretfully settle with him taking the no. 1 spot among the Great tier.

3) The most handsome Shichibukai ever elected. Arguably the most handsome character in the series. I feel there's a slim chance Mihawk ranks with the Great - Legendary tier but that just doesn't sit well with what I've seen so far. This is the one character that has caused me a little headache but the least he can be is being on par with characters in the Great tier. I hope I don't regret this decision when the Mihawk reveal begins and the man shows off his "great" sword skills :p

He didn't run from Smoker out of fear. It was a waste of time fighting someone he couldn't touch much less deal any damage to. That's Luffy having common sense.

If Zoro is going to be at least as strong as Rayleigh (legendary) then shouldn’t Mihawk at least be great-legendary ? Unless you think Shilliew will be as strong as Oden (great-legendary) and beat Mihawk.

I question whether Sengoku was really legendary outside of being one of the smartest characters in the series, and I'd say Akainu and Aokiji may be Great - Legendary in that tier, but other than that and taking into a count your point "3)" it's a solid list to me.

Shilew isn't beating Mihawk. It's not even remotely hinted. Hence Shilew isn't making my list. There's a long way to go though before an arc focused on the Blackbeard pirates but I feel by then, Zoro would be too hot for Shilew to handle.

Thanks mate. To get called out by Roger for battle isn't a small feat. Sengoku is in that bracket I feel with Roger, Whitebeard, and Garp. The difference separating them would be negligible.
He was ready to take on the whole Blackbeard pirates in his old age. These things solidify his place for me.

Tbh, other than Aokiji, Akainu, Oden and Mihawk, really solid list.

I don't see how he was scared of Smoker. Running away from someone whom he couldn't touch wasn't him being scared, at all, and especially when he had no problem fighting Smoker during the War.

Really? Even though his reactions were spitting out the food he's eating (during his encounter with Ace) or the water he's drinking (when he & Usopp encountered Smoker and Tashigi)?

I'm curious as to why do you interpret that.

You know I'm usually a firm defender of swordsmen in these debates but I don't think that Oden was strong enough to potentially kill Kaido guarantees that he would certainly kill him in a fight. He had the power to wound him mortally, but so did Kaido.

He seems to consider Oden superior to himself based on how he was talking about him

I'll have to disagree with your interpretation, since the situation is much more nuanced than that to make an absolute statement.

In as wild as your assumption is, it would've been considered correct if you were talking about Oden being slightly stronger than Kaido back in the past. Neither Oden nor Kaido had reached their prime then but the difference between them, back then seems negligible to me.
But right now, Kaido's way stronger than he has ever been in the past.
Some of the abilities he's showing right now where non existent back then. Like a dragon breathing out slicing wind, thunder roar, I mean WTH? it's getting too much for just one guy
These are his prime days and I don't see anyone outside the current Yonko's edging out Kaido in a one on one battle.

How do you know Kaido couldn’t do that kinda stuff back then ?

How strong do you guys think Ryuma was ? I think he was likely on the same level as Roger or WB.

Dude, have you read the chapter? I think you should chill till you get the whole picture. You sound like one of those guys who thought the Scabbards were ragdolling Kaido when it's actually Kaido not giving a damn about their attacks.

Honestly I do believe he was already able of these techniques since they seem to just come with his mythical zoan DF, but they may have been weaker back then. He probably even has an awakening now.

About Ryuuma... I hold him in high regard, he has his own legend and all, and so far he's one of the only two swordsmen that have turned their blades black, he was probably the Mihawk of his time (although of course with a much friendlier personality going by the one-shot). But we lack just too much information to compare him to anyone.

Was the dragon he slew like the artificial dragon's on PH? That's not much of a feat. Was it much stronger? Is the one-shot to be considered canon or just what inspired the character? In the later case, may the dragon he slew have been of the same species that Kaido's DF has turned him into? If that was the case, he was certainly a legendary fighter for slaying such a strong beast.

We lack information on if. Perhaps when we know more about how does a blade become black, there will be some implications on Ryuuma's level.

He's going to be hard to guage for me cos nothing has been shown about how extraordinary he was. Just that he was powerful and slayed dragons. Also something about defending Wano's borders.

Those feats can be achieved by any competent Samurai so I wouldn't jump into conclusions. But I can see him being at least as strong as the Scabbards. He may as well be Oden level strong. That would be cool.

He said you guys can’t beat me. Only Oden can beat me. That’s not great.
