Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

and i still maintain that akainu actually dealt way worse damage to white beard than white beard dealt to him, heck he went to take on wb commander remnants and then chase after the blackboard pirates immediately after

kizaru left the fight in a better condition and dealt worse damage

aokiji and he got interrupted
Yea, Whitebeard actually showed the damage he took while all Akainu had was bleeding, and he still kept coming as if he never took damage.
I have already written extensively about this quote. All he’s really saying is “Let’s see how strong you really are boy !”
I'm sure what you wrote was completely wrong. Again, Mihawk never went after Whitebeard after that, did he? If he really was that strong, then why wouldn't the Marines make sure he got a chance to fight WB?

where do we rank oden , remember he's stronger than when he met roger and whitebeard at the time of his death, i'd say admiral ish , kizaru level ( a distinction , he called his crew members his kids but wb called oden his little bro )
I'm thinking he may have been somewhere above Katakuri's level of skill, but still far from Yonkou or Admiral level as we currently are aware of it.

Oden being around that level at the time of his death would imply that Kaido was also around that level 20 years ago and that doesn't make much sense to me. I refuse to believe Kaido's strength peaked 20 years ago and he just remained stagnant, especially if he constantly sought out death and clashed with Big Mom and WB to become a Yonkou. But if both him and Kaido were around Katakuri's level, that would mean that they'd be top tier while still leaving room to grow into individuals who could be comparable to the modern day Yonkou.

It was not about him having a chance to, he doesn't really follow the marine's orders all that much, just like Hancock, or Doflamingo. Don't think of him as marine subordinate.

Doflamingo, in that very page, was surprised Mihawk drew his sword at all. That is not a testament of Mihawk's strength but of his character: Mihawk didn't care about having an all out fight with Whitebeard right there and then, nor did he care about fighting his crew. He was there because he would have lost the Shichibukai priviledges otherwise, but he's known (according to Doflamingo) by the one who is less likely to show up when the WG calls them.

He did his bare minimum by being there and throwing some attacks at Luffy to keep him away for a while and then by casually dueling with Vista (who we also know nothing about other than that he's been with Whitebeard from before the great age of piracy. So around as long as Marco if not more). He was not invested in the war and it looked like he took it as a light entertainment, similar to his mentality when he went after Krieg all the way to East Blue just to kill time.

He was not afraid to turn tail when Shanks arrived. If he was THAT worried about losing his title, he would have stayed and fought. And that was before Sengoku called the war off. If any party had challenged Shanks Mihawk would not have been a part of it.

There always a convenient excuse that seems to be made for Mihawk. Idk but it looks like Mihawks only "all out foght" is going to be against Zoro, and if that happens... RIP.

If Mihawk was scared of Shanks taking the title from him he wouldn't just casually enter his territory to show him Luffy's wanted poster.

I don't think Mihawk would like to fight Shanks to the death. A duel is one thing, fighting on Marineford would have been much different and it has nothing to do with fear (for neither of them).

They look like genuine friends. Distant friends, yes, but that is also part of Mihawk's character. Not only did he casually get to Shanks, we also learnt in that scene that Shanks had shared his memories of Luffy with him, implying they have not only fought but also talked at a personal level, and then there was that weird party.

Whenever Mihawk's arc arrives he will get more of a spotlight, like Doflamingo, who also only joked around during the war and was just as mysterious as him. I don't think Mihawk will get a whole arc revolving only around him, but when the arc in which he is to be defeated comes, I'm sure he will get to show off a bit before he is brought down, just like Doflamingo or Crocodile but on his own level.

Oden was below WB when they first clashed, Oden was way below Roger when they first clashed. Oden returning to Wano and fighting Kaido was stronger than Oden before WB but I think still weaker than WB and Roger.
I believe Oden was right below Kaido in their fight because although Kaido won by Oden getting distracted and this was not a trick by Kaido but by outside forces. It took Kaido only one club hit to knock out Oden, while Oden who scarred Kaido had not finished him off yet and was going in for another hit.
That shows to me that Kaido > Oden by just a little bit.

Now regarding Kaido's strength... he is stronger than his Rocks' years but is he stronger than 20 years ago or about the same?
I'd say about the same..he did get a little bit stronger than 20 years ago but not enough to make a difference.
Until proven otherwise I say Roger during his PK days is the strongest of all and just a bit above WB of that era. After Roger died, WB became the Strongest of all time with Kaido and BM tailing right behind.
I dont think the Kaido of today and Big Mom are stronger than Roger and WB of Roger's era.

Well I don't think Mihawk is getting a back story unless we get bits of it from someone who is more important to the central story than Mihawk... like Shanks. But you last paragraph seems to agree with this so I'll leave it.

Any fight Mihawk has from now til the end of the story people will just say "Mihawk wasn't going all out" and then its going to get to Mihawk and Zoro and he will lose. It's just convenient that Mihawk gets all these excuses honestly.

I too think Mihawk and Shanks are allies more than enemies at this age. But the more we get about Shanks the less and less likely it is that Mihawk is as strong as he is rumored to be.

At first people said Mihawk fought equally to Yonko Shanks, because WB threw in a vague reference to their fights. The bulk of Mihawk's hype comes from that 1 line.

Years later it was revealed, Mihawk never fought Shanks as a Yonko and in actuality hadn't fought Shanks in SIX YEARS leading up to Shanks being a Yonko. Yet a data book says he's seeking out someone stronger than Shanks.... But he never fought Shanks who was now un-arguably strong enough to clash with WB, Kaido, and Akainu.

The data books also say Vista was an elite swordsman capable to fighting Mihawk, but even you are saying Mihawk wasn't serious, directly contradicting what we are being told. Throw in the fact Mihawk never fought Vista... how Is he the WSS when their are elite swordsmen he has NEVER even met?

We've gotten to the point where Mihawk words about measuring the distance between WB and "us" was dissected into atoms until the Mihawk fandom found an interpretation that matched their narrative. I mean this is for Zoro as well, he appeared on a color page eating noodles out of a bowl that featured a dragon on it and OF COURSE THAT MEANS ZORO IS GOING TO KILL KAIDO and we had to hear about it for weeks.

My final point

I think Mihawk is Yonko Level, but have no evidence to support that claim. Just like there is no evidence to support Dragon is Yonko Level, which I also believe.

To argue about his place in power ranking for YEARS when his best feat is fighting equally to Vista is exhausting... but that's all anyone ever wants to talk about.

i'd still argue oden was right there

a club to the head does more damage to slashes tho imo , kaido landed a critical hit on the head

When did Kaido fight Big Mum in a 3 day fight? he only fought her for 12hrs

Im ignoring your ignorance on One Piece power levels by the way
My bad, yeah 12 hours. Still very clear there's no wide gap between them as you implied.
The difference between Kaido and Big Mom would be slight at best.

Ask Whis-kun in a private chat. But I wouldn't waste my time. Its just excuses.
Are you sure he isn't @nik87? Same sword boi tendencies.

Yea, Whitebeard actually showed the damage he took while all Akainu had was bleeding
WB and Akainu again? It was pretty clear who the apex predator was at Marineford. Old news :bored

He wasn't running, he just had no interest in fighting Shanks, especially out of respect and friendship. He was willing to kill Luffy even though he knew Luffy means a lot to Shanks, I don't think Mihawk's scared.

@Pirate Queen If you don’t think Mihawk’s WSS title is valid, why do you think WB and Kaido’s titles are valid ?
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Actually, after the latest chapter I can see Kaido being slightly stronger than Mihawk based on what he has displayed until now. Though it’s not impossible that Mihawk has some secret power which he never showed Zoro before...

i dunno oden was around 39 at time of his death, that's kinda where strength peaks ish , i think kaido still jumped a bit but i think level of growth slowed down considerably since then
I don't think he's maxing out his gains in recent years, but I'd assume he was still making strides after Oden's death. He was still making a name for himself at that point in time.

oh yeah oden was much stronger than when he first encountered wb and roger , the journey made him grow

I'd assume they all grew since his first encounter with them. They were still sailing since then.

I don't think Kaido was that old? Maybe late 20's depending on how old he was when he apprenticed with the Rocks. Either way, there's no real way to gauge how strong Kaido got, but I do think he made major strides before settling into his title of Yonkou.

However, why wouldn't Mihawk want to prove his mettle or superiority by taking on and beating Whitebeard? That would enhance his reputation as a swordsman and give him a challenge.
Two possibilities in my opinion.

1: Mihawk believed WB's strength was greater than his own and didn't see a point in fighting him. Per his own words at Marineford, he felt that WB strength at that time was closer to everyone else's than it should have been, meaning that he noticed right away he was sick.

2: Mihawk didn't want to risk facing off an entire Yonkou crew just for the slight chance to face off against WB. The only Yonkou he seems fine with approaching directly is Shanks and that's because they are friends.

If the 'so-called' translation is correct then Mihawk > Kaido is pretty much confirmed

You said last time that chapter pretty much confirms that Mihawk > Everyone else. Could be the one before that but it's there.
