Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

1) I have Roger/WB Above Garp/Sengoku; All are ACoC users, But I got the Pirates being slightly stronger.

1A) How much weaker Someone gets because of old age or sickness is not really quantifiable. You cannot compare Garp’s aging to WB’s Aging & Bad Health. It can’t be narrowed down just a ball park guesstimate.

WB(72) Sickly . Imo Wins Extreme diff against any Top 10. Despite his horrible stamina & health which would provide openings; he still had the highest offensive power.

Garp(76)(78)- Also older than WB; Not Stronger than him either. Would give any Yonkou or top tier difficulty. But he’s is not superior to them anymore. They are younger and slightly stronger than He is now. Kaido mid-diffs Garp; Same as Shanks. Big Mom is a high diff.

Sengoku(77)(79)-Way older than WB; Not stronger than him, his drop off is way more. Kaido would Thunder Bagua him silly; Low Diff. Big Mom pulls a Mid diff with her healing & Homies giving her number advantage…Shanks like Kaido would Low Diff.

2) Absolute Peak seems to be between 40-50. Maintained through your 50’s. Declines in your 60’s. 70’s you are noticeably not on the same level anymore.

3) Big Mom I really like her character. Oda trolls her too much. Big Mom due to her size relies on her Cloud or Sun to travel; Her reaction time/Speed is average for her tier.

Still yet so very presumptuous of me, I believe she fought differently when she was younger & sleeker.

Real issue is Oda’s writing is getting weird/not so great. He’s spacing out the dots to much it’s hard to connect; to make sense of a few Portyals. Big Mom has only used ACoC as a Scream during WCI & a punch that took out P1;

ACoC is important to the in terms of fighting. It will be showcased much more later on in the manga. Amongst the top tiers……Why didn’t Big Mom use it much more?? When she knows how?? Is Big Mom’s whole fighting style spamming her DF?? When we’ve seen her get physical and is a powerhouse by her own right…I’m left to believe she’s definitely has suffered a drop in prowness from her more youthful days. Big Mom is 68…She definitely has suffered a drop off, especially more than likely in combat style.

We don’t know if Big Mom is always using ACOC. That is fan speculation/ assumption. Like I said Oda ain’t leaving these dots together to be connected. The manga needs to answer a lot of minute question for its audience, Oda has been leaving us hanging, bickering and arguing
1. Come on man, you have to at least acknowledge this is a lot of speculation. Prime Garp was outright stated to be an equal to Roger. Sengoku wasn't. So, it makes sense to compare him to Roger, while not Sengoku who was still has some hype due to being considered a legit threat by Roger. There is a clear distinction in the manga being made regarding how Garp and how Sengoku is treated
Manga implication is that: Roger ~ prime WB ~ prime Garp > prime Sengoku

1.A I think once you get to 70s, 72 vs 76 isn't much of a difference IMO. At that point, it's purely genetics and personal disciple, which dictates how badly you age. CLEARLY Garp aged a lot better than Whitebeard, this isn't even debatable.

Of course, we can't exactly say A got nerfed X% due to old age, and B got nerfed Y% due to old age. But I think common sense and basic scaling can give us SOMETHING to work on. These are undeniable facts:
- Garp aged a lot better than WB. WB needs constant medical assistance to not be sick, while Garp is running around fine and dandy. Basic logic should suggest that WB got nerfed relatively more than Garp did.
- Difference between Whitebeard in meds and out of meds for days (i.e Marineford) is significant and this was emphasized in the manga.
Whitebeard in meds has conqueror's haki on par with Shanks (arguably the strongest conqueror's haki user alive), had "always on" observation haki which allowed him to no diff Ace (who was at least Jinbe level then) in his sleep, and was recognized by everyone as the strongest pirate alive.
Whitebeard out of meds for days (i.e Marineford WB) had non existent conqueror's haki and barely functional observation haki. Got stabbed by Squardo, who is nowhere near Jinbe levels while he was awoke and standing, with Marco commenting that these types of cheap shots would've never done jackshit to WB when he wasn't sick. And was saying he can't be the strongest forever and that he was just a man, when Crocodile got pissed.

On what basis is healthy old Garp WEAKER than sick old WB? I don't get it. If you want to argue that sick old WB > old Sengoku, or even that old WB in meds > old Garp, I can at least understand where you are coming from.
Whitebeard had high offense even back in his prime, and Garp was his equal back then too. If prime Garp had the means to deal with prime WB's attack power, I'm pretty sure healthy old Garp can deal with sick old WB's attack power as well

And no, nobody is "low diffing" Sengoku. The dude was still the fleet admiral. What is with this downplay lmao?
Old Sengoku should still be stronger than old Rayleigh by scaling, and old Rayleigh had combat stats on par with Kizaru, an admiral. Nobody is blitzing the shit out of old Sengoku except prime Roger or something.

2. Yep, I agree with that.
Kaido peaked years ago, and is maintaining his peak right now.

3. I think BM's combat speed is perfectly fine. She is only slow in travel/pure speed.
BM did fight base Kaido equally for hours afterall. So, her combat speed is at least relative to base Kaido. If she can split the sky with Kaido, and has enough stamina to least fight on for hours, then I'd argue that she isn't really weakened from old age.
In contrast, old Rayleigh, while having combat stats on par with Kizaru, was implied to lack the stamina to continue this level of performance in a prolonged fight.

Like I said, BM was thematically meant to be a top tier "DF" user. Of course, she can punch hard too, as we saw her against Kaido, as well as Ulti. But that is not the crux of her combat style. Using DF creatively is.
Even in WCI, this was how she fought. More of Zeus/Prometheus/Napoleon attack spam, less of punching on her own.

I'd say BM's advanced conqueror's haki is "always on", this definitely seems to be case since it was used as a major plot point in WCI arc, explaining her supposed invulnerability as well as how to remove this by weakening her will/spirit.
Of course we didn't know back then that this was conqueror's haki, but we still knew it was haki/will related.

But yes, I can acknowledge that Oda has created an uncertainty here, due to how he handled Law/Kid vs BM. Especially her just punching Law on and on, and it didn't seem to be clad in conqueror's haki, since we didn't see the "gap" in the punches.

Ehh, can't say for sure.

I would argue that Kaido was more exhausted than Luffy, which made the difference. Also, the focus going to Kaido's eyes and his surprise, when Luffy answered his question leading to him reminiscing about Joy Boy, might have something to do with Kaido losing focus too.

I'd overall say Luffy is definitely close. He has attack power and combat speed which is about the same, while durability and stamina below Kaido's.
IMO, current Luffy is between Kaido and Big Mom. Would lose with extreme diff against Kaido, but win with extreme diff against BM.

There is no way he would take this with high diff, even if he wins.
As impressed as I am with Kaido I just can't imagine Luffy losing to him in a fight anymore. They are too close in power for me to doubt Luffy will struggle to pull off the win. I doubt Kaido will be any stronger in a second fight but Luffy I think could grow even more in his haki skills and DF powers.

Are there any opponents that Luffy defeated up to this point in the story that you'd think he'd lose against in a rematch?

1) That’s my perspective. You don’t have to agree. Golden Era
Roger (PK)
WB (Strongest man/ Rogers Rival
Garp (Hero Marine/Roger’s Rival)
Sengoku (Roger says he’s a threat similar to Garp)

I place the Pirates higher than Marines. Simple as that. If you don’t, ok. *Pirates(Roger/WB)

WB was old & sick. What we saw in Marineford was WB vs 3Admirals….3 Charcters within his tier that’s insurmountable odds. 1 vs 1 he’s winning against Everyone/Anyone. His power still is above everyone else. He just fatigues & sickness creates openings. Which is why it’ll be extreme diff. I don’t anyone trading blows with him. We saw how he did Akainu with all that damage.

Kaido’s Club was on Luffy’s face/head like White on Rice. He’s beating the life outta Sengoku who’s 77. Low-Diff for a Yonkou fight would be the equivalent of Luffy’s entire performance vs Kaido before he Rode Momo back up to Onigashima. It’s still a good fight.

3) Like you said there’s major uncertainty. When it comes to uncertainties ? A different perspective? Doesn’t make sense to argue but understand where someone else is coming from. Can’t really be correct when’s things are uncertain…

Sure, there are some villains, against whom Luffy would've lost in an immediate rematch. Obviously current Luffy would stomp the following characters, but that is because Luffy then grew throughout the story later on.

Crocodile - Luffy couldn't win against him in a straight up fight until training with Rayleigh
Doflamingo - Luffy would've lost, until he grew in strength during fight against Katakuri
Katakuri - Luffy would've lost, until his training in the prison

Kaidou didn't dodge, Zoro missed.
I hope this is a joke. Can't tell at this point.

Those are pretty good candidates. For me Doflamingo would be the one that I'd imagine Luffy struggling in an immediate rematch since there wasn't any growth in skill or learning of a weakness. Luffy would go into a rematch with all the same drawbacks.

For Kata, I think Luffy would actually win a rematch since the big issue was aCOO which he learned in that fight. Sure Kata would be better at it than Luffy but without the big gap of not being able to get hit I would give Luffy the rematch.

Crocodile is interesting one. It was very circumstantial win but also Luffy did learn his weakness against water so it's a toss up for me on an immediate rematch. Surprised you think Luffy wouldn't be able to beat him in a rematch until Rayleigh training. I'd give Luffy a clean win on Crocodile after Enies Lobby. G2 Luffy with water should easily overpower him (assuming Crocodile didn't get stronger) but not clear against retconned version of Croco.

Lol I didn't realize it was a contentious topic, since I don't normally participate in any discussion about Zoro. Dude missed, he flat out says so. There's no indication that Kaidou moved at all
That's how I understood it too when I read it. On the other hand in the anime seems like Kaido slightly dodged similar to how Luffy dodged Pacifista lasers right after the time skip. Honestly this exchange is a bit ambiguous but at this point I think it was a bit of Zoro missing since he couldn't control Enma and Kaido slowly moving out of the way while fixated on "Oden's haki."

Regarding Crocodile. He is someone who is treated at minimum to be as strong as Yonko-executive/Tobiroppo level, based on Marineford arc. He was treated as a legit threat in Marineford, in contrast Luffy was treated as an ant by everyone. Maybe this was Oda recognizing his fuck up and retconning? Idk.
Regardless, even discouting Marineford all together, Luffy's win against him in Alabasta was pure fluke, a combo of Crocodile's massive overconfidence and CIS.

Now that that is out of the way.
Ok, so if I understand your logic correctly, if Luffy got a powerup mid fight, then that would make the difference if they had an immediate rematch? That is all right, but we have to look a bit more into the context too.
Luffy getting the powerup mid fight didn't make him strong enough to outright overwhelm his opponent, it made the fight go from a losing position to a near even position.

I will try to argue this for just Katakuri and Kaido (since for others, Luffy didn't get a powerup mid fight):

- Luffy, even after getting future sight, was below Katakuri in attack power, CQC/defence and overall haki. Luffy only had durability over him. If you look at the overall picture, Katakuri was still superior to Luffy. And, Katakuri is capable of maintaining this performance for a long time, while Luffy is donezo after 15 mins, after which G4 runs out. I mean, the time limit of G4 was even a plot point in their fight IIRC, where Katakuri allowed Luffy time to get to his G4, because he wanted to fight Luffy at his strongest.

- Kaido went through a massive gauntlet in the arc. And defeated Luffy thrice in the raid, after each defeat Luffy had time to heal up and recover. While Kaido was fighting non stop, without a break
And after all that, G5 Luffy was pretty much just a match for Kaido.
Kaido was already at his last legs, when he started fighting G5 Luffy, even much more than when the sky split happened. Luffy's awakening undoubtedly healed him (I mean the dude was actually dead and bought back to life lol), so I'd argue G5 Luffy started off at a relatively better place (though obviously nowhere near his full power either)

Anyway, not arguing that the gap is significant.
I place Luffy solidly at Yonko level. Stronger than BM, weaker than Kaido. I think that's pretty fair.

Lol I didn't realize it was a contentious topic, since I don't normally participate in any discussion about Zoro. Dude missed, he flat out says so. There's no indication that Kaidou moved at all
The anime made it clear that Kaido dodged.

1. How do you see relative levels? Say, if Roger was a 100, how would the rest be?
Even if you consider Roger/prime WB a bit above Garp, do you agree that Garp was still close enough that this would be an extreme diff?

To make matters more simple, say, this is acceptable?
Roger: 100
Prime WB: 100
Prime Garp: 98
Prime Sengoku: 90

Do you agree that Garp aged a lot better than Whitebeard? If yes, logically speaking shouldn't the gap decrease, irrespective of how small/big you think it was during their prime?
Point being, if prime WB vs prime Garp was extreme diff or even high diff, then old WB vs old Garp should at minimum maintain that diff.

See, my issue isn't that you are rating sick old WB highly. He has feats backing it up, he fought against the strongest admiral (Akainu) and had a slight edge.
The issue is that you are rating old Garp and old Sengoku lower.......why? Because they didn't fight? Is portrayal and narrative to be discarded, because they simply didn't get feats? It is not even like they got anti-feats (i.e feats that prove they are not top tier anymore), they simply didn't participate in the Marineford war, that's all.

You think Kaido would low diff old Sengoku........Tell me, Kaido vs Kizaru, who wins and what diff?
Old Rayleigh had combats stats relative to Kizaru, and was lacking only in stamina, Old Sengoku by scaling should be above old Rayleigh for sure, one because prime Sengoku was likely stronger than prime Rayleigh, second because Sengoku aged better than Rayleigh (Sengoku was active and living disciplined, Rayleigh was retired and spent his time drinking/gambling).

3. Sure, there can be difference perspectives. We still debate cause that's what the forum is for lol.
We both can at least agree that, before the whole Law/Kid vs BM happened, there was no question of BM getting nerfed by age? In WCI, her "always on" haki was established and was used as a major plot point. In Wano, BM fought base Kaido for many hours, exchanging blows and splitting sky. Someone who could fight on for many hours, without breaking a sweat at a high level, isn't nerfed by old age IMO.

Which is why I think that Law/Kid vs BM is more of a thematic fight where DF is given more focus than haki, leading to less haki display; rather than BM being unable to use haki because she was nerfed by old age.
So, is the way Law/Kid vs BM an indicative of her being nerfed by age, or is it an indicative of thematic battle? We can't say for sure because we can't read Oda's mind, but according the precedence, it suggests the latter. Unless we are to believe she got nerfed by age a week or two after her battle with Kaido, where she went onto fight for hours at a level where they split sky.

The anime can certainly have its opinion about this manga that we're talking about.
I think Oda works closely with the anime. Especially because in Wano, he had to rush and skip a lot of things.

IMO, Wano arc anime is canon. Especially for stuff raid related.
We might even see a lot of unanswered plot points being addressed in the anime. Some Yamato related stuff which already happened in the anime, is a good example IMO

What he learned was "I probably should have used my biggest attack immediately instead of taking 25 chapters to do so". Doffy just had nothing to counter King Kong Gun and was immediately annihilated by it. That fight would have been over basically immediately if Luffy did that first instead of ... all of the other not doing that.

It is acceptable.

But I think all Emperors and Admirals are 80-90. I'm sure Roger would be interested into fighting any of them.

Luffy legitimate won against Crocodile. Marineford is inconsistent with Crocodile's level.

Either you ignore it, or assume that Impel Down made Crocodile 10 times stronger.

Like you said, Crocodile was a legitimate threat according to the WG. His defeat was a big deal to the WG. It's not like a random officer attending that meeting could be stronger than him. It wouldn't make sense if Crocodile was weaker than Luffy in Marineford.

Yep, current Yonkos and admirals are giving Roger a high diff IMO. At least that is how it seems currently. Lets wait and see how things turn out in the future. Maybe Oda will reveal that Roger was an absolute God relative to current Yonkos, we'll see

Luffy legitimate won against Crocodile. Marineford is inconsistent with Crocodile's level.

Regarding Crocodile, I think what we saw in Marineford was how strong he was always supposed to be, IMO.
He was always meant to be a borderline/low Yonko commander material. Someone who could pass off as a commander, but not quite there. Like Perospero for example.

I think it's just that, Oda didn't plan so far ahead, and ended up screwing up the power levels. Basically, Crocodile came too early into the story.
So, he retconned Crocodile to be where he is narratively supposed to be,

Luffy legitimate won against Crocodile. Marineford is inconsistent with Crocodile's level.

Either you ignore it, or assume that Impel Down made Crocodile 10 times stronger.
Legitimately won with some of the biggest plot armor in the series, yeah.

I've always taken it to be that Crocodile and Moriah both suffered a debuff to their haki after their crushing defeats in the New World. They lost their "spirit", and went back to weaker seas where they could amass power more easily without fear of pissing off an Emperor again.

While Luffy had some lucky, at the same time he gave Crocodile the beating of a lifetime

Those are pretty good candidates. For me Doflamingo would be the one that I'd imagine Luffy struggling in an immediate rematch since there wasn't any growth in skill or learning of a weakness. Luffy would go into a rematch with all the same drawbacks.
That's interesting. I would've thought luffy would beat doffy in an immediate rematch even quicker. Straight into a G4 king kong gun and it's over. Doffy had no counter for that
