Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

If you ask me this WSS debate will go nowhere until we have a definition of Swordsmen in the OP world that we can have general consensus on. If we can't get a consensus the title becomes useless for power scaling debates and I'd argue that mods should add the use of the WSS title for power scaling debate to the ban list of topics.

Enough about Mihawk..... lets get to the legendary hero

Is it me or is Oda upping his game and finally letting loose on Top Tier characters he introduced decades ago but couldn't/wouldnt show their true strengths until close to end game... Shanks, Garp ... maybe we'll finally see those Yonko level feats from Mihawk..
Does Garp have CoC? I believe he does. Although it has not been explicitly shown or stated, I believe Dragon and Garp have CoC and well pretty much ACoC, but hey I can't make that claim just yet...

Let's say that Garp does have CoC AND ACoC, that makes him a monster among monsters. If he doesn't and this Galaxy Impact is only his ACoA, well that's still pretty strong.
AS strong as Bajrang Gun that took down Kaido? IDK, I don't want to get into that, I seen how some of y'all already did in the spoilers discussion...

Back in MF, I was sure a pissed off Garp would murder Akainu, there I said it.
Sengoku knows Garp and his strength, so Im sure Sengoku was afraid of Garp actually killing Akainu. With that said, I believe Garp would have taken life-sustaining damage, like Aokiji did but maybe even worse, not as bad as WB tho. Garp was seen in better health than WB, so I think Garp could have used his Haki unlike WB who couldn't use any type of Haki and still manage to beat Akainu.

Garp vs Shanks.... I think Red Haired takes the win due to age, since Garp is no longer in his prime. I still have to yet to believe that the original Yonko have surpassed the old era ( prime Roger, prime Garp, prime WB)

Wow Mihawk discussion ends and nobody visits this thread anymore. Even more surprising with Garp's incredible feat.

It's because Mihawk fans are trying desperately to figure out how to turn Garp's Galaxy Punch into a sword skills feat

That's ridiculous. We're never going to get a concrete definition for any epithets. They're all misleading or exaggerating in some way, but also still useful to describe a person's position in the world that's usually relative to how to power scale them. It's just a more ambiguous version of how we use bounties to do this.

The flipping Pirate King himself only got his epithet because that's just what people started to call him. Most characters probably got their epithets the same way.

Uh oh you're gonna open the sword vs fist pandora box....

The thing is with Mihawk fans is that if Roger was currently alive and well like Garp is, people would no doubt place Mihawk > Old Roger.
And now that sits wrong with me.

You're going to catch a big fat L once Mihawk start flexing, that's all I'm gonna say on this. On some level I know you know it deep down too.

I don't get why everyone is simping for Galaxy Punch

Garp just defeated a bunch of fodder and destroyed a few buildings

Galaxy Punch is the bare minimum for someone like Garp

Kaido and Big Mom have done damage of similar scale by casually swinging their weapons

Unless in the next chapter it's revealed that Galaxy Punch damaged the entire island, or fucked up Blackbeard's commanders, it's nothing special

Is everyone so thirst for any feat from Garp?

Because it's not a regular attack? It's a named attack, performed in a way we've only seen from the likes Elizabello who needed a lot of prep time.
Big Mom and Kaido were also simped for the Ocean's Sovereignty, attacks like this just gives us a little bit of insight of what a character is capable of, Garp was written off as being old and 'weak' by a number of people in the fanbase so this past chapter was a bit of a refreshing one for those who wanted this see the Legendary Hero in action.

Just let the people enjoy the scene/attack/chapter or what have you, if you feel different then fine, but don't attempt to invalidate how people react to a chapter because of that.

As already mentioned, it's Garp's first named attack. Yes, it's true we've seen similar feats of destruction before, but the real takeaway is Garp's seeming use of AdCoC. There are a surprising amount of readers who didn't think any marine was capable of using CoC solely because they were marines and haven't shown any of the "standard" traits of CoC users. Garp especially has often been slightly maligned despite what the story has told us about his relationship/comparison with Roger. The past chapter finally gave us evidence that it wasn't just empty talk from Oda.

Personally, I'm not much of a Garp stan, but it has me much more excited at the potential performances of the Admirals when they finally cut loose.

I date a Zoro/Mihawk dick rider, my whole One Piece Life is already an L
:feelsbadman

Kidd was the closest we get to an Admiral level fighter losing. Unless Mihawk neg diffs an Admiral level fighter or Yonko level fighter I don't see how he can flex big enough to hand me an L and we both know the story is not set up for Mihawk to play such an important role like that. I'm curious as to what you think he is capable of that would shut me up?

Things Mihawk could do that would hand me a big fat L:

1.Send an Admiral running with just a display of Haki (which I doubt since WG sent fodder after him to "bring him in")

2. Neg diff an Admiral/Yonko

3. Not lose his first life or death fight in the manga against Zoro

Bonus: if Mihawk splits the ocean like Moses parts the Red Sea and both he and Zoro fight on the seas level floor because the gravity of his sword swing keeps the sea from caving back in on itself... I will change my name to "The Biggest Loser" for 3 whole months and let you pick my profile picture :feelsgoodman

I don't expect the manga itself to give us any clear definitiions. I meant more that the people here debating power levels need some consistent definition otherwise all that happens is people talk past each other. Bounties are a softer version of this that I also don't think are good if used in an absolute way the way WSS is used.

I have never seen anyone argue X > Y purely because X has a bigger bounty. That is what is being done with WSS title right now that I didn't like.

Garp's Galaxy punch was definitely a feat of aCoC so we should consider that confirmed. There is no other move set that we've seen that has the trailing black lighting prior to the attack even landing.

I do think it is an impressive move that is of similar level/pedigree as signature named attacks by other top tiers. Garp is definitely showing us he is still a power house which makes sense since despite sickness & age old WB was still impressive. Garp should be like that and so should Rayleigh, Sengoku, etc. They aren't at their peak but they are still above YC commander level fighters.

We just need to see more from Garp to more accurately scale him to other known entities. The punch was a wake up call that we need to pay attention to Garp but it is just the start of his power scaling discussion.

This would be the most epic thing ever. This would evolve One Piece to Dragon Piece.

This is an interesting direction for the conversation. For characters we haven't seen in action, what would be the biggest flex that you'd want from them to show off their long hidden abilities?

We've got Mihawk, The Admirals, and Dragon as the major big dogs and a few others I'm probably missing. What would be the most impressive thing to see from them at this point that would live up to their hype and have them comparable to the other big dogs we've seen so far?

Lol at Kid being "admiral level", any admiral destroys Kid too. The next headcanon that is about to bust is the takes that Yonkos can somehow clown on admirals like what Shanks did to Kid. Admirals will likely be slightly weaker than Yonkos "on average", but still in the same tier to at least warrant a high diff.

The travesty of Wano arc is Big Mom's loss making people think Kid & Law are relevant against Admirals/Yonko in a 1v1 fight. It took them 2v1 and lots of PIS to get there W so as soon as they are no longer favored by Oda they get the treatment they were meant to get against BM. Luffy is the only one that came out of Wano actually at that level.

As for flex moves that would impress me:
  • Dragon:
    • Scale Attack: Causes a massive wind storm that destroys everything around him. I'm essentially envisioning what he did in Loguetown on steroids with tornadoes all over the place too.
    • 1V1 Attack: If he really is a wind user I'd argue for a blast of air imbedded with aCoC that is so powerful that it ends up defeating YC2+ level fighter in a single hit.
  • Mihawk:
    • Scale Attack: He cuts an island in half, splitting the very earth (similar to what WB did in Marineford). Alternatively he splits the ocean revealing the sea floor like Pirate Queen alluded to earlier.
    • 1V1 Attack: Honestly as a swordsmen I'd expect some attack that is similar to Kamusari where its a powerful cut imbued with aCoC. In my mind him cutting Jozu in diamond form and KOing him would be a flex.
I think the Admirals have all had their flex scenes before since all of them have fought enough.

I don't think Big Mom's loss was PIS at all. It was ridiculous literal plot armor making Kidd and especially Law tank attacks they had no business being able to tank, the incredible coincidence of the armory's bombs going off in her face at just the right time *on top of* the incredible coincidence of there being a bed of magma to send her down to. Without any of those three things, Law and Kidd would have lost miserably.
