Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

While we're on the topic of Sanji, I'm upset that Bouef Burst wasn't animated as impactful as it was in the manga. The combo was tops though.
Honestly the anime has been a disappointment since Wano started, IMO. Im not a big fan of the whole new animation, I prefer the old simple style. I feel like I am watching something completely different.
I began watching it during 4Kids as a kid and I loved how it was. Alabasta and Enies Lobby were peak OP fights back when it was simple. EL was awesome due to finally seeing power ups and awesome new techniques. Nobody was expecting the Monstrio Trio to come up with new techniques.

Technically, it was still the Year of Sanji. Got no action, but he was the focus and got the lion's share of development.

Brook was the MVP of arc though.

The lead up to it was perfect. Good adaptation of the panels and the various attacks before BB. Then they just dropped the ball with the final impact. Made him appear upright and did a whole beam struggle thing. Even the hell memories animation a few eps back didn't match the manga impact.

Generally haven't been a fan of the DBZification of the anime mixed with bad pacing because they refuse to make filler out of the cover stories like they should have been doing for ages. Smart thinking and 'filler' can help with bringing a great adaptation of the manga and I think they mostly did that this episode only to have Boeuf Burst be so underwhelming. Tragic.

Can we debate Shanks(Evil twin) vs Mihawk?

Or does that fall under forbidden topic #1

I understand The ppl that enjoyed the Sanji Vs Queen Episode. My favorite part was the combo; I feel as though the impact of Sanji’s final attack was lost in the animation….But Watching Wano is just reliving an over hyped arc…🤷🏿‍♂️

Meh

That rule should be removed, given the new information in the manga

Mihawk is stronger than Shanks's evil twin when it comes to swordsmanship, the rest is unknown

There's not much else to debate

Woah! Zoro vs King.
My Fav part was the final clash! & the very beginning…
The Animation was pretty sick there…
But Damn!! Lmao talk about Dramatic!
Aside from messing up the choreography of King attacking & then spinning to attack again…& Zoro didn’t block king’s kick he ate it & countered…I like lil details like that to be kept.

King's final attack:

:kreygasm :kreygasm
Top tier animation, plus the flashback. This was King's episode, not Zoro's

Yeah, while the animation itself was top tier (apart from the weird "cubes" as debris), there were certainly issues with some of the execution.

One as you mentioned. The bird dance sequence.

Then there is the event where Zoro vs King clash only happened once where King blocked the attack leading to Zoro's taunt of "why block? You afraid it'll hurt?"
While in manga, there were several blocks and dodges before Zoro figured it out, which makes more sense.

The final attack from King in anime was great in the beginning, the additives of "extra" smaller dragons were good, differentiating it from the previous smaller dragon used against fodder.
But they didn't show Zoro cutting through the large dragon clean like they did in manga, instead it was just a flash and happened offscreen, instead of it being clear like in manga:

Good assessment on the episode, my thoughts exactly. The animation quality was solid but just like with the Sanji fight they didn't keep the same finish. Not sure why they changed it up on those final attacks but both Sanji and Zoro got done dirty. Sanji's finish caused a big explosion that we should have seen from a further away perspective and Zoro's final attack was supposed to cut the dragon as if it was a living thing.

Either way I was still happy with the episodes. Hope they keep this quality for the rest of the arcs serious fights, especially Luffy v Kaido which still has a lot left in it. But the preview has me a little disappointed because they won't get rid of Luffy's glowing gold aura. Like wtf. Zoro just used aCoC the way its intended which is just the streaking lighting. Why can't they get that effn right.

I don't know which version I preferred. The Manga was serious amazing but the animation of the episode was phenomenal.

Animation only seen in movies was used here.

The final attack of King was just so well done and reminded me of The Hydra from the old Disney Hercules movie.

The Kaido flashback was so good

Animation of the episode was really great, but some of the more important details of the fight are lost in the shuffle with them going the bombastic route. Zoro's keeping of his blades using CoC wasn't highlighted as much as it should've been. It just came across as a huge explosion out of nowhere and the CoC lightning popped up as a blink and you'll miss it afterthought.

Also, the animation they used to show King's speed before Zoro landed Bird Song was how I was hoping they'd do to highlight Sanji's "invisible" speed last episode. Instead of slashes, it could've been Sanji's footprints being embedded into the walls as he speeds around.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can look at that and not see just a bunch of visual diarrhea.
Everything about this fight is a microcosm of my feelings about Wano's animation as a whole. The stuff that's expanded on truncated stuff in the manga, like King's flashback? Great. The dump trucks of neon paint and a camera being wielded by the Noid on coke? I could do without that.

Honestly, I get the Bleach-ification of the fight scenes. I don't like it, but it's *fine*. What I don't get is taking out key visuals or altering things for the worse. Queen being launched didn't need to be changed, and Zoro slashing the one(!) fire dragon didn't need to be completely omitted.

I just checked out the queen bit on youtube. It doesn't look too bad but it entirely misses out on the chance to showcase how much sanji has grown. During dressrosa we see that doflamingo's fight with luffy has them getting torpedoed across the country when taking attacks. They simply hit each other THAT hard. Sanji kicking queen off onigashima, high into the sky and then falling someone in wano really showcased that sanji is capable of that sort of combat. I suppose it can be a bit minor but a wasted opportunity all the same. The fire dragon not getting cut by king is fairly egregious though. Fuck zoro learning to cut fire from kinemon. Zoro probably did that before earlier in the anime (I assume) but to me it feels like it takes from the story considering how few interactions he had with samurai as it is.

Sanji's main issue was the anime gave a time difference between beef burst and the rest of the spam. While in manga, Sanji attacked him non stop without giving Queen room to recuperate, which was more solid.
Queen also looked more damaged by the end of that in manga, which it didn't in anime.

With Zoro/King, I absolutely loved that they differentiated King's final attack instead of it just being a bigger fire dragon lmao.
But the ending should've mirrored what happened in manga. Let's keep all the extra small dragons anime added, AND have the manga finale? Like Zoro cutting the fire dragon's entire body clean and then cut King? That would've made this episode a complete 10/10

Auras gonna ruin Luffy vs Kaido. I am just so glad that they kept auras restricted to Zoro's sword for the most part in this episode lmao.

I also don't expect much out of G5 vs Kaido. Hated it in manga too. I don't know how the anime can make this joke and troll of a fight any better, except for the finale which I'm sure anime can gas up quite nicely.
Best hope is that G4 Luffy vs Kaido would be top tier animation, it was great action in manga too.

Some of it was over the top.
But it was mostly fine. The final attack especially was amazing, the charging felt like as nuke and the dragon diverging into different heads/smaller dragons was great IMO too. The anime differentiated King's final attack, rather than it just being a bigger and stronger fire dragon compared to what he used against his fodder subordinates.

I was afraid that they would aura spam and ruin everything, but aura was kept to a minimum for modern Wano standards (in fact it was mostly limited only to Zoro's sword...pleasantly surprised there lmao), and the animation was quite clean.

King especially was animated quite well.

But yes, 100% agree on the bold part - point of anime omitting the most important slash lmao.
They added Zoro slashing extra small dragons. But offscreened Zoro slashing the main dragon and King himself! WTF lmao

The entirety of it was some insane drug fueled neon light nonsense that has almost nothing to do with how oda actually drew the fight. Even if you ignore the deplorable art choices, the animation is just awful. You can't actually tell what's going on, you certainly can't tell where the characters are, for some unfathomable reason zoro is flying and as you say we don't even get to see the final slash against king it just cuts to king screaming. This is indefensible, the only grade it deserves is visual-diarrhea/10. The only positive thing that can be said about this is that technically it's not the worst animation in OP anime. I saw minutes of the hours long fight between luffy and katakuri and it was just the two of them endlessly screaming before before and during punches.

Some good herb will help turn that visual diarrhea into a well crafted symphony of colors...

Agree the timing for Sanji's attacks were off. It started out well with the back to back but def should not have given space to the finisher. My biggest gripe though is they scaled down the beef burst's impact. In the manga it was a larger explosion and caused Queen far more visible damage.

As for Zoro I liked everything about the episode except the final blow. The small dragons etc were a nice visual touch for me too. I'm just missing seeing the large dragon sliced clean in half from head to toe. That was so visually epic in the manga. Animators seemed to have split the difference and showed Zoro cutting small dragons but impact just isn't as strong for me without the bigger one getting cut. I give it 9/10 and would have done 10/10 if I had the large one too.

I know I'm resigned to that too. Zoro's glowing swords to me is excusable too since Oda drew smokey rings in the manga. With base Luffy using aCoC I have no idea what is wrong with the animators. I hope the G4 gives them a chance to leave it behind in base mode cuz like you said Kaido and Luffy had epic brawl in round 2. The fighting drunk mode thing was just best 1v1 moment of Luffy v Kaido, with lots of back and forth in a fluid fashion.

I'm not worried about G5 personally. He already is glowing in the manga so I don't see how they can ruin it (knock on wood). The fighting was also not serious style combat so them not sticking to the script is more okay here for me too.

I feel like weed is the wrong drug to try and enjoy the one piece anime. The starting point should be crack cocaine and from there just spiral into increasingly more disgusting stuff. And then finally overdose trying to enjoy the OP, never having come close as while you snorted every drug known to man the characters were still just charging up their punches and screaming into the nether longer than the entirety of the namek arc lasted.

Don’t even watch the anime but the shot of Zoro saying he’ll become the king of hell is the most epic moment in one piece anime, Zoro looks unreal.

Have noticed swordsmen are generally the best characters by far in OP. OP would be better if Zoro was the MC. Don’t need some BS god fruit with looney toons powers ruining it
