OK I've gone through and taken out all the spaces... since it was just really really really hard to read how it was (thanks for taking the effort to write the jp, next time no spaces between each character though ). Next step will be the checking of the trans... I'll update this when I've gotten more to show Also thanks for supplying the raw it'll help out a lot

I figured trying to check and improve my translations is enough work as it is without a raw or Jap text for reference. As for the spacing, that's how it is in my current textbooks, I was wondering whether or not to include them but since I'm learning Jap with them present, it was a lot easier for me to write them so I could better differentiate when new words began. This, of course, only works when you're absolutely sure when words begin and end, which I wasn't in a number of cases, so I'm guessing it looks pretty riduculous here and there. I'll remember not to put them in next time though.

Woah, I've never seen any textbook write it out like that, which textbook are you using? But I guess it does help you recognize where words end and particles and what not begin, it's just for a person that is used to reading it it totally disrupts the flow. I'm using Minna no Nihongo, authentic Japanese stuff (probably 'written' in the Kansai area judging from all the maps in the books). My seniors are using Capita Selecta, but apparently the university wanted to go with a new method in my year. Generally it's excellent and for clarification, the spacing definitely helps, but there are some weird things as well, like always using hiragana for grammar bits and not teaching the kanji for "watashi" until lesson fricking 49 (which I will only learn next year, assuming I make it past the first year). Since the 2nd semester I'm also getting to read text without spacing, sometimes producing hilarious results, expecially with the particle は. As far as your check goes, it's kinda like getting back an exam, I'm not sure I really want it or not.

I'll check the last script you posted By the way, like njt said, if you have an IME (i.e. a program that allows you to type in Japanese) the next time you should include the Japanese script, so that it's easier for us to correct If you don't have it.. well, I suggest you get one, because it's very useful! I'd use "lives". "There is" makes it sound like she's just.. existing there XD; Plus, the verb is actually "to live" (住んでいる)

In Japanese the structure of sentences is basically the opposite of English, so in most cases you can't use the original order... Even when words are laid out far from each other, like in this example, you cannot just literally translate each of them, because this -> "Always I am made fun of by her" definitely doesn't sound like normal English XD; Hence, you have to change the order..
Like this: "She / always / makes fun of me", or "She always / makes fun / of me". Though I'd use the first one because it leaves the "makes fun" part on the next page, retaining the "suspense effect"


○○くんの口から言ってくれたら通してあげる
B9: If you say that, I'll forgive you.

"Toosu" = "to let pass". Hence -> "If you say that, I'll let you pass"

Pay attention to these kinds of lines, because very often they're just a long sentence that's been split in a few parts By the way, where did you read "cousin"?? XD
This is literally: "Usually / to my parents and our neighbors / she's good-mannered", and it becomes -> "She's always polite to my parents and our neighbors"

As I said earlier, that doesn't really sound like normal English You should "remix" the sentence
"My neighbor (or "the girl next door") / always / makes fun of me."

Literally: "Since we have the occasion, maybe I can especially teach you various things not related to studying".
Decent English version: "Since we're at it, I might also teach you a few things of the kind you don't learn in school."


As you can see, there were quite a few mistakes...
First of all, you should keep on studying grammar and try to spend more time analyzing the sentences you encounter. For example, you should pay attention to where they begin and end, because sometimes that can be tricky. Also, always try to make out: subject, object, verb, and try to see what's related to what. It's essential that you understand who/what a line is referring to before attempting a translation.
When you've figured the subject etc, try to make a literal translation. It might sound stupid, but it helps you see what words you have there.

E.g. これでも一応教師を目指しているし
Literally: "even though things may seem this way / once/tentatively / teacher (obj) / aim (present tense) / ("shi" is like leaving the sentence open; like "this, and...")

It looks like it doesn't make sense, but first of all you notice that the verb is present tense, not past like you put it. When you make it more decent English it becomes:
"Even though it might not look like it, I once/tentatively aim [to be a] teacher."
Since "once" makes no much sense with a present tense, you get that the correct meaning is "tentatively". Adjusting the line, it becomes (not strictly; I mean, you can vary XD):
"Even though it might seem weird to you, I'm actually trying/aiming to become a teacher."

Another example: 時々凛とした真面目な一面も見せる
Literally: "sometimes / dignified ("rin to shita" means that) / serious / one side / also / show (present tense)"

We clearly have the verb "to show", so first of all we'll try to fix the sentence using that one. It's pretty easy to guess that the subject is the girl.
"Sometimes [she] shows also a dignified [and] serious one side."
Now it's starting to make sense Let's make it better:
"Sometimes she shows a dignified and serious side too."
This would be good already, but we could always improve the wording.
E.g. "Sometimes she shows me a dignified/composed and serious expression (or "side of her") too.", or whatever else

Last one: ○○くんに教える事は　私自身の勉強にもなるし
Literally: "to ___kun / teach (present tense) / thing(s) ("wa" means that this is the "topic"), / I myself's / study / also / become (present or future tense) / (another shi denoting "suspension", like "..." XD)

This looks pretty bad at first sight, but it really isn't. First of all, let's look at the "topic", that is often the subject. When I had just started to learn Japanese I was told to use a trick to understand how the "topic marker" は works, that is -> translate it to "as for" to get the meaning, then change it later XD
"[As for] the things that I teach to ___kun / [they (because the topic/subject is the same)] become also myself's study."
Now, you may know/notice that "benkyou" is also used to refer to something that you learn. For example, "kore wa benkyou ni natta!" means "this taught me a lot!/I learnt a lot thanks to this!". Hence, "watashi(jishin) no benkyou ni naru" means "they teach me/make me learn a lot". Basically:
"[As for] the things that I teach to ___kun / they make me learn a lot too."
Eventually, this becomes:
"The things I teach to you help me learn as well" -> "Teaching you helps me learn as well."
Also, since the verb may work as a future tense, I'd say we use that, since she hasn't started teaching him yet XD
--> "Teaching you will help me learn as well."


I hope I was clear enough XD; I'm not really a linguistics expert (well, I'm not even a native English speaker, err), so I tried to use words that convey the meaning (like "topic marker").
Another thing that I suggest you is to read translations done by expert translators. If you happen to follow any manga series that are translated on MH, read the text translation and compare the lines to the original Japanese text, so that you can get an idea of how it works. Try to understand how the translator got from the original line to the translated text

Obviously, you can try translating yourself too. A good idea may be to try and translate something that is already translated by someone else. This is so that you can compare your work with another translator's right away ^^ I know it might seem boring (translating an unpublished story always appears more interesting), but it's a very good exercise! XD
As for "what", this short comic you posted was a good start. I suggest you keep on trying your hand at this level of manga Just avoid seinen, because they often have complicated sentences and themes. Translating something that's too high above one's level won't be very helpful, becase you might just end up understanding close to nothing, so it's better that you start off from easier stuff...

I've got a little past half of it done, but ran out of time today. So I'll post what I've done so far. My verdict, you're doing REALLY well for just starting, so I do think you should continue translating, though I'm not quite sure if it's best to translate something new quite yet. Maybe translating something already done and checking your translation against that.

Here is a site that has a lot of great translations from a very very good translator, so you could use that site to help yourself get a bit better.

Reading a whole bunch also helps a lot too (As I'm sure you know)

But if you want to continue translating this manga, I'll continue to look over it (It'll just take some time between corrections ^^;;;; )

Well, my japanese sorta sucks... but I have a trusty dictionary and furigana lmao~* whoever is looking over my translation... thanks very muchly. I didn't get some of the words... so I just guessed... >_<

I mostly read chinese... so my kanji reading might be inaccurate in the japanese context. Then I used whatever knowledge of japanese I have to fill in the rest of the blanks.

Like the title is 圧縮, but that just sound funny. Cause 圧 is to press or to pressure. And 縮 is to shrink. So together it's like compressing or deflating something... and that doesn't sound all that right...

I didn't get to really read through your translation just yet, but as I was putting together the compilation I noticed that at least one of your bolded parts does vary quite a bit from the others. The other thing that I noticed is that you don't have all of the japanese script translated. Actually to be more precises you were missing some of the script in your translation.

This is my first ever practice translation(I had a shitload of time to kill)

I have not learn't how to translate sfx yet so...I left it out.But I choose a pretty easy chapter to do imo...but I think I still did a sucky job.So the ones in bold are the ones I am unsure of my choice of words and overall meaning in context to the original.

Please feel free to criticize my work.
