How is Gratzu still in and Frexus out?

I did, but there were higher chances of the shipping happening than there was with Natsu and Lucy because we know at least one side likes the other in a romantic way.

Freed brings logic though? Wasn't he reckless at times though? Or am I having wrong memories of him because he sticks his tongue out a lot like a punk rocker?

I kinda agree but Mashima never cared to make the males in FT show their love interest but for Gajeel who actually confessed because he thought that he will kick the bucket. It is always the female in every pairing that is more obvious about her love interest.

My favorite pairing in the whole story. For a ship to be endearing to me, it needs a touch of tragedy, because I find that to be closer to real life than fiction. I know we're all reading fiction but everything really isn't sunshine and flowers. And out of all the ships in the story, I do believe that this is the saddest one Mashima has ever written.
And no @Jko, it didn't appear out of nowhere :-_-

There was already foreshadowing that there was some sort of connection between these two, as far as the Grand Magic Games. Because once the games were over, we had this confrontation between these two:

And even as far back as Tenrou, because at the beginning of the arc we saw that Zeref was on the island.

And at the end of the arc, we saw Mavis was on the same island in ethereal form.

Which meant that they were on that same island alone for all that time. Foreshadowing on fleek :mono

But now onto the good stuff. The reasons I'm a huge fan of this ship.
Pros
She was able to identify his curse, and being the only person who could do so, she wasn't afraid of him like most people usually were...on the contrary she even felt for him and made imaginary animals that he could touch...that was selflessness right there, and she had never done the same with anyone before, note how she was wary around Yuri when she first met him, but she trusted Zeref..

She implored him to teach her magic, and Zeref agreed, he even cited that it was odd behaviour for him, meaning that from the moment they met they already had a connection...

Zeref then disappeared, and after she met him again, the first thing she did was hug him...she's never done that with anyone before, even her guildmates, and she did that well aware of his curse and his effects...meaning she already trusted him...

After that they both sat down and talked, and after Mavis told him the effects of what she had done, he touched his head to hers, causing her to blush...she's never acted that flustered with anyone before (Note how this paralleled to Natsu touching Future Lucy's forehead in Eclipse)...then once he told her that he was Zeref, the greatest Black Wizard of all time, she wasn't even afraid of him like everyone in the series who flips out at him, she even said that she wasn't afraid of him when he asked, citing that he had nice eyes (meaning that she didn't believe that he was entirely evil like most people did)....she always believed in him and trusted him...

Fast forward to when Mavis runs away from the guild and goes to hiding, Zeref looks for her and finds her (he was already in love with her, and she with him, but she was too busy fretting over her curse), then while together, she saw Zeref was agonizing again because of his curse, and she forgot that she herself was in the same boat, moving to hugging him (something she had not done with anyone else), and saying that she would always be there for him even if the world rejected him (I don't know about you guys, but there's a mighty fine confession of love if i ever saw one), she even told him not to give up because they would find a cure....TOGETHER....

Zeref then tells her that he loves her, saying that no one was as kind to her as him (Shit, I'm crying again), and she said that he was exaggerating...but the interesting thing to note here was that when he confessed to her, she didn't say anything (or react in any visible, flustered manner), which implies that she also felt the same way as him, but she already was aware of it so she didn't have to tell him (She's never considered Zeref her friend, he was always something more to her)...then when he moved to kiss her, she accepted it....that sealed the deal right there...and to make the matter even more beautiful, the trees around them died when they kissed, meaning that they both felt the same way about each other (This is non debatable, anyone who tries to argue against this lacks reading comprehension)....showing how tragic their love was...even the words inscribed there were...."The love of THESE TWO.....has taken away my life from me when I was immortal."...

Case settled! Zeref & Mavis love each other, it's written in the stars!

So Mavis dies, and Zeref takes her back to the guild (he would have just left her behind, but taking her back to her home implies that he still loved her, I didn't see him taking Zancrow home when he killed him)...he drops her to the ground, now desensitized since he believes that he can never be with anyone....but this wasn't exactly a heartless scene as many people believed, since in the next panel we see him crying over how broken he was, he killed the girl who he loved and who also loved him...

Mavis's death serves as the turning point for Zeref as well, since he now fully believes that he will always be alone with no one to love him, and incapable of loving anyone.

However, the two claim to no longer harbour any romantic feelings towards each other, now seeing each other as enemies. While Zeref wishes to obtain Mavis's Fairy Heart, the latter views him as a danger to the world that must be disposed of.

Despite this, the two actually still hold deep feelings for one another. This is shown when Zeref feels sadness while watching Irene attempt to strip Mavis of Fairy Heart, a process which brings Mavis great pain.

Later, when Zeref informs Mavis of his plan to erase the current timeline, the latter tearfully begs him not to erase the world where she meets him.

And after Zeref's defeat at the hands of Natsu :shootme

, Mavis still empathized with him and wanted to save him with her love :awe

(Alright the first part of this will forever be a NO from me, but the second part I'm iffy on. I expected something better from Mavis but meh, I suppose they did have a sweet ending)

So, all's well that ends well for this ship. :x3

But on a serious note, as an avid ZerVis shipper, I'll agree Mashima overused the ship WAY too much in the final arc, to the point where it became the only defining character for Mavis. Zeref was fine since he had interactions with the other 12 (Though around Mavis he became some weird lovesick puppy, that infuriated me especially after we had these panels:

So yeah, the ship was too oversaturated in the final arc to the point where it lost its initial charm in Zero and Chapters 448-450.

Hated this ship, everything about it annoyed me. But the worst part was its end, where Mavis granted Zeref a peaceful death. Not only because that evil piece of crap didnt deserve to die with any sort of peace or comfort, but because its also just completely retarded.
Mavis revealed that she didnt truly love Zeref back in the day, and thats why she ended up dying while he didnt, which i liked. However now, years later, after Zeref starts a war with her precious guild, a war which ended up killing(as far as she new) her beloved Makarov, she suddenly loves him more than before? Stupid, i always figured that Zeref would be die the same way Mavis originally did, in fact i hoped for it, but this was just sickening.

Yeah Mavis/Zeref were made for each other. Also Mavis loving Zeref more when he starts a war with her guild makes me think Mavis no longer cares about the guild.

These two have had consistent development toward the close bond that we see at the end of the series. They also have hints at a potentially one sided love.

Their fight was inevitable when Kagura's normally stoic nature turned to fury upon seeing the man who killed her brother, Jellal Fernandes, which led her seek out Erza for a confrontation on the final day of the games, that not even Mavis could predict.

Until Erza revealed that she herself lived Simon and Kagura in Rosemary Village. That the three of them were good friends until Simon was kidnapped during a "child hunt" and taken while Kagura only managed to escape due to Erza's help. The fairy tail member also really cares about Kagura.

During the banquet celebration of the games, Kagura wants to reconcile with Eza, and the girl asks Erza to be her sister. Erza enthusiastically answers by grabbing the girl into a hug.

The girl is later seen still blushing while she is dancing with Erza.

While Erza may not harbor any feelings for Kagura beyond a Sistp, Kagura does seem to have questionable thoughts about Erza.

As the series progresses, we don't see much of Kagura but when we do it normally consists of some involvement with Erza. The redhead is the main one who can get under Kagura's skin, making her blush.

In Alvarez, the two fight team up together in Hargeon... I like the two when they are fighting together. Being both badass women types, it is good to see them on the same side, working together.

And later, Kagura feeling guilty for ~~saving Jellal's life~~ giving Jellal mouth-to-mouth kisses Erza in one of this series few kisses.

The only thing I can talk about it the sheer sex appeal.
These two are smoking hot.
