Uh no Its Mihawk who gave up.
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/96/16/
Shanks was ready to go anytime
That scene shows me that most likely Mihawk always came to shanks to duel not the other way around
The scene just shows a typical hooligans "hello". They probably try to pick interesting fight with anyone every now and then.

"I have given up thinking". So he thought about it. He still holds the title.

2 possibilities:

1. Mihawk give it a thought, and yet it's not worth the effort to actually fight him.

2. Every time they fight since Shanks has one arm the Mihawk won every time and become so bored that he's sick of hoping Shanks would give him a good jog. The fact that he's ready doesn't mean he'll win right?

Spain holds the title "best" after beating the team who beat Uruguay 3:2, in 1:0 victory. And spain happened to beat Germany 1:0, and Germany beat Uruguay 3:2. (True there could be conditions or performance inconsistencies in every play/fight. After all they're human)

Mihawk got the title probably from swordsmen, otherwise this title has no credibility what so ever. He must have beaten the swordsman who beat Shanks, or he beat Shanks.

Why Shanks doesn't challenge Mihawk? C'mon try to have some fun right? It could be that he's laid back. Or he could be scared and may die.

Hey at least if you feel Mihawk always the one taking initiative. Then he'sat least have some guts fighting someone at their own turf. Especially a captain surrounded by nasty pirate crews.

But of course all these only apply if Shanks is a true swordsman.

I'm going to do this really quick :

Haki > Sword

So far the greatest thing we've seen is the Haki power, and Shanks (with Rayleigh) is the one that shown the best control of it.
I have no doubt in my mind that Shanks could beat Mihawk with his Haki alone, not even using his sword.

Unfortunately the same old haki man was troubled by non-haki so far kizaru. And the not so best control WB and akainu showed more Armageddon then Haki did.

Congratz on your view. But I don't think Haki = greatest thing. Nor those with Haki = win. Without fighting skill of any kind Haki is only to KO fodders.

It is however a valuable asset to have.

So your only argument is that every swordsman has to claim loudly that he's one in before a fight? That's not reasonable and idiotic imo. Sometimes I think that people give up on thinking for themself, as a lot of things in manga are self-explanatory for obvious reasons. :/ We aren't six years anymore. Shanks being a rival to Mihawks in swordfights is a hint for him being one. What else do you read out of that fact/comment? I gave so many reasons and you still ignore them for a reason I can't understand.
Restrain yourself as you said we aren't six years any more. It has never been said that Shanks and Mihawk were rivals in swordfight just that they were rivals.

(The question is how they were rivals and you think they were hardcore rivals who aimed for the same goal while I think they were rivals just like Kakashi and Gai of Naruto. Gai is pumped up and always want to fight Kakashi in different things while Kakashi just tags along not really thinking or even caring of what he's doing.)

Come on you know what I mean, please... Remember Shanks is a pirate and pirates used lots of tools sometimes the sword. Now for me in the Op universe a swordsman is someone who has knowledge of the sword and so on. Making people who for exampel uses; -toryu skills an obvious swordsman I also think that using skills through the sword(not Haki oriented) are also Op swordsman like T-bone . So I guess the problem is who is a swordsman and right now none of us can answer that.

Just look at all the people who carry/-ied and uses a sword. Arlong and Cabaji are very good examples of people using the sword but are not considered swordsmen. Let us not also forget that Pirates and Marines uses swords and guns as weapon but still it's not necessary for them to be either swordsman or sharpshooters. I mean almost every single Vice-admiral carries and uses a sword but I'm sure they are not regarded as swordsmen by others or by themselves.

Swordsmen in general

You are still not answering why Shanks is always portayed with a sword, in his youth, in his flag and in every encounter. :/

By my definition somebody is a swordsman, who's using it as a main weapon and knows sword techniques. I don't see something as pride constricting somebody from using help as haki[to fight logia], hell that's the only way to fight them as shown in the manga or devil fruits, if they can make them stronger. If some shaolin has mastered a sword-fighting style and is also a perfect martial-arts fighter, does it make him less of the first or the second? Hell no! Combinations are helpfull not worsening.

Let's give some examples:

Law: He is using his sword as a weapon in addition to his devil fruit powers. Why shouln't he use it to his advantage? He probably can win by using the sword alone, using precision from being a doc, but his DF helps him in a extreme way.

Zorro: He used something like an aura to strengthen his attacks and was only trained in swordfighting[and weight lifting for strength increase], so for obvious reasons his best choice of fighting is using swords only. Can he take down enemies with his fists? Yes, because he is strong. Would he stop being a swordsman, when he fought a fight only using his body? No. If he learned to use haki to fight logia, would he stop being a swordsman? No.

Rayleigh: s.a. [Zorro]

Kidd/Roger/Blackbeard: Have all kind of weapons with them, and as portrayed till now, not swordman, because they seem to use whatever will help them at the moment, may it be raw power, devil fruit ability, gun or sword.

Shanks: Even as a apprentice he fought with a sword, he is defined by his red hair and his sword, uses it in every encounter shown. Is in possesion of hakushou haki. Was rival to Mihawk, the #1 swordsman, which is an extreme hint that their duells were to decide who's the strongest swordman at the moment. Databook says he has great sword skills, which again defines a swordsman.

I probably wont answer to you anymore, cause people ignoring facts aren't worth to discuss with.

P.S.:Answer my first question this time please.

You haven't even asked the question until now you just used it as a statement.

Okey, let's see Shanks is always seen with a sword. As I was saying Shanks and his crew is supposed to be the typical Pirate.

Why is shanks always portrayed with a sword?
I have already answered this more than one time, if you don't remember read all my posts again please.

Why in his youth?
He was still a pirate and he hasn't changed his weapon of choice Buggy still uses his daggers, no?

Why in his flag?
So as I was saying Shanks is supposed to be the ideal Pirate, an anarchist, a freedom fighter/lover. Now the traditional Jolly Roger is the most famous; a skull and two crossed bones.

Shanks jolly Roger is also an "allusion" to Piracy as we all are familiar with. Calico Jack introduced the Skull with crossed swords and influenced and introduced the Pirate we all know so well. Shanks Jolly Roger also have an eye-patch a symbol of the pirate from the same era of Piracy as the crossed swords and Calico Jack.

What's interesting with Calico is that he was not known as a ruthless pirate actually the opposite just like Shanks and on top of that Calico rarely killed and plundered other ships instead he offered the crew on the ship to join him. Familiar, no?

Calico also didn't start a spontaneous career like Luffy but started on another famous captain's crew. Calico carried a sword and a gun but he wasn't committed to his weapons the same way a Samurai is committed to his. He was just a Pirate nothing more, nothing less.

That he's an ideal pirate doesn't change anything form the fact that he has developed [plotwise] over nearly 600 chapters. What proof do you have, that he is not a swordman?[not your own deffinition, but manga facts and comments] How does it change the fact, that we aren't able to tell who's stronger, since they never fought in the current time? Being number ones doesn't stop somebody from being equaly strong. I have posted enough arguments over the last 28 pages, long before you wandered into this thread. You probably should read through it, before trying to talk big about me not remembering arguments.

Im glad that you not involved in the writing of OP. So you are saying Shanks will knock out Mihawk with just his haki? It's obvious that you simply a fanboy of Shanks and never even bothered to give some serious thoughts on this matter. Out of experience I can fairly say, it is impossible to discuss with fanboys. My last post to quote urs in this discussion.

kindly regards
bhair

@Ero-Sanji: Fighter who are using swordsmanship as their primary skill are swordsmen. Mihawk and Zoro are to 100% confirmed swordsman. They never used any other fighting style beside swordsmanship.

Everything we learned by now from Shanks, tells that he is a swordsman.
  1. Everytime he fought, he used a sword. He is also always portrayed with a sword.
  2. He was called Miahwk's former rival. And had several fights with him, which are considered legendary.
  3. In the datebook it is stated that he has top sword skills. As a bonus, it is even mentioned that he used to draw with his left hand.
It is obvious that Oda is joining him with swordsmanship. If swordsmanship wasn't his main skill, then Oda wouldn't have bothered to create a rival situation with the now #1 swordsman and wouldn't have bothered to state that he used to draw his word with his left hand.

It is not the same level of mystery with WB. Prior to the war arc, some ppl assumed he was a bisento-man (polearm-man, swordsmanship). But WB was only portrayed with a bisento a few times. While Shanks is in several other way linked to a sword (swordsmanship).

Now since you seem to be sure that he is carrying a sword just for show, let me as ask you a question: If he is indeed not a swordsman, then why else has Oda linked him in more than one way to swordsmanship? Here again, those hints (links to swordsmanship) in a better detail.

You got me wrong. I was talking for a possible scenario after Mihawk defeated him.

Shanks laid back attitude isn't proof for me that Mihawk was the one who always challenged him. A rivalry works in both ways. I think he also wanted to fight with Mihawk. Either way, it is irrelevant.

The one who is carrying the title strongest swordsman is Mihawk! There is no reason or whatsoever to doubt that.

His dream was to be the King of the Pirates but he gave that dream to Luffy.
Where was such thing stated? as far as I know he wanted to be a pirate captain on his own to see the world.

My god, haven't you read anything?
As I was saying chill out. There aren't proof from both sides of the either being stronger I'm just building up thoughts around Shanks. Mihawk being the called the Greatest Swordsman isn't proof enough as well, not yet. What proof do you have that he is a swordsman? I think the whole allusion with Calico Jack make you less confident, that's why you're getting upset.

I'm not going to continue with you if you don't take it a little bit easier:notrust

@Blackhair

You're right I did a mistake. His dream is probably not to be the Pirate King, I even wonder if he knows were it is being a former member of the Roger pirates? I guess not since Buggy would have already stolen it. This is also something I take as a hint that Shanks is sort of this generations WB, Shanks' just out there to have fun and spread peace and freedom. The rest doesn't mean anything to him.

Jeez you guys are taking tiny little details and blowing them out of proportion.

The following is hypothetical:

Shanks and Mihawk's duels were very infamous in their time and; judging from the strength of both Mihawk and Shanks, I would guess that they were evenly matched to the point where there was no actual victor in their fights, like when Jimbei and Ace fought. Shanks meets Luffy, off goes the arm. When Mihawk hears of this, he finds that dueling an one-armed swordsman is an uneven fight, since they had fought in the past (and maybe) evenly, than Shanks losing an arm would obviously put it in Mihawks favor; but only for a short time.

When a man loses his sight, his body compensates and strengthens the other senses. When Shanks loses his arm, he HAD to have compensated his fighting style so that it would not be a burden, like strengthening his Haki to insane levels to the point where fodder pirates on Whitebeard's flagship pass out (just because he walked on the damned boat), something Whitebeard could not do to fodder marines at the battle of Maniford. He would also have to adapt his style so that he would not need to have a left arm in swordfighting, since the blade on his waist is very clearly not for show, and I'm sure his physical strength would be enough to compensate for his missing arm. Would his attacks be faster since his blade is much smaller than Mihawk's, and he is using his prominent (and only) arm; Who knows? I certainly don't, but based on the events and facts given, that is the conclusion I came to.

in short: Pre-arm loss shanks = Mihawk, Just lost arm shanks < Mihawk, Current Shanks vs. Mihawk, most likely even for now, but we have seen neither Shanks or Mihawk go all out, so it is really tough to say. Based on what has been shown, I'm gonna go with Shanks, simply because he has trained himself to overcome his handicap, which may have required more effort than Mihawk does normally.

I don't like the comparison of your hakushou haki effectiveness. All of his sons[Whitebeards] were equal to him, so he would naturally let any on his ship, even if they were fodder. It wouldn't be wise to deploly all good fighter on his ship. Joz and Marco just seem to chill on his ship in peaceful times. Also Whitebeard didn't care for attacks from the fodder marines, so he didn't use it, most likely to show of his strength and increase the moral of his family.

Or Whitebeard probably didn't feel it useful or just has not such a control over it as Rayleigh.

Question in between: What does taking out weaklings have to do with fighting strong opponents? We still don't know what HH can do or if it has anything to do with the haki usage we were shown till now. Why do people argue with "haki" if we do not know what it actually does aside from knocking sombebody unconscious? Just wait a couple of weeks, till Luffy is shown showing off his new powers.

True; but even so, I'm sure the standard crew-mates on Whitebeard's flagship are leagues above normal fodder, it's just a display of power on Shanks' part.
Now assuming that King's Haki increases power by a considerable amount, like when Hancock destroyed Pacifistas, Kuja Haki has been shown to increase the destructive power of arrows to the point they almost seemed like small cannonballs.

IF King's Haki is better than regular Haki in every way, then I'd say that Shanks (who has been shown to have quite a bit of affinity with it) has a great deal of offensive power.

As for the fodder situation, in a one-on-one fight, no that knockout power wouldn't do much, but if it is any indication as to how powerful their Haki is, then I suppose that Shanks it pretty damn powerful.

No one doubt's Shanks strength. But even having the kings haki, he will be still be a swordsman, if swordsmanship is his fighting style. And atm everything says he is a swordsman and nothing else.

I believe Mihawk vs Shanks will be just like Luffy vs Lucci. Though Luffy won, he couldn't move anymore. Piratically you could say it was a draw. I expect a similar scenario for them. While Mihawk would be Luffy and Shanks Lucci.

When i think of this, i think that shanks is stronger than mihawk, but i think that mihawk is a better swordsman than shanks. If i am not mistaken the seven world lords of the seas and the world government are the balance of the the 3 yanko. By that definition shanks occupies a position of power that three people hold and it takes the world government and the seven world lords to balance.

sorry i can not spell ;)

BlackHair,

Yonko = Cap of a pirate crew. A pirate captain (Yonkou) is fighting his battles in armies (pirate crew vs). I have the whole manga supporting that.
What the whole manga had showed, is that Yonkou is a title given to a single man. For example Whitebeard. So i'm not talking about his crew, i'm talking about one Yonkou individually, with the example of Whitebeard's death making the minor thugs trespassing without fear into WB's turf. It's WB that makes Whitebeard Pirates so powerful. The example about an individual Yonkou is the strongest man in the world, so WB's existence support an individual Yonkou's calibre. Which is why i consider Shanks to be an equal to Old WB (Yonkou WB, not Prime WB), as the same kind of indidual Yonkou.

Let me explain my thoughts on haki:

Haki is supplement skill. It is not a skill on it's own. There are no haki man out there. Haki is a boost, it can be added to imbue weapons and probably physical body party, to surpass the original strength. A example: a sword imbued with a haki is stronger than the same sword without haki.
I agree.

For the other haki abilities, such as nullifying devil fruit intangibility and knocking out fodder aren't useful while fighting Mihawk, since he shouldn't have a devil fruit and obviously he is not a fodder. The only additional haki ability, which should help Shanks fighting Mihawk, would be mind reading/hearing.
so it's two things about Haki that Shanks has if he is to fight Mihawk right? Strength boost and mind reading/hearing. I agree.

* WB = quake devil fruit + kings haki + bisento -> quake man
* Luffy = rubber devil fruit + kings haki -> rubber man
* Rayleigh = swordsmanship + kings haki (SBS 58)-> swordsman

If a person eats a devil fruit, his fighting style will be named after that. Luffy and WB are the best examples. Even though both have the kings haki, there fighting style is still based on their devil fruit.
Now here's where our opinions are different. Your interpretation about the "fighting-style title" is primarily based on the Devil Fruit, if someone has any. My interpretation about the "fighting-style title" is primarily based on the strongest skill someone has in a fight. I call it main skill. So, Whitebeard has King's Haki, for example, but what makes his punch, or bisento slash so destructive, is his quake (Fruit-based). Since at the Moby Dick scene, Shanks' power was seen commented mostly about his Haki instead of his sword, my interpretation is that Shanks Haki is more recognized than his sword. Even if Haki is a support skill, it still weighs more than his swordsmanship technique, according to that Moby Dick scene. That is why my interpretation towards Shanks' main skill, strongest skill, is that it is Haki. Not his swordsmanship.

Now are swordsman any different? Most likely not. Since Rayleigh first mate of Roger (Zoro as parallel) is most likely a swordsman. Even though he wields the kings haki. Now why should Shanks be any different? Haki has proven to be not considered as the main skill. It is a boost skill or support skill, either defining should be fine.
I know that Rayleigh is most likely a swordsman, and i don't refuse it. I don't refuse Shanks as a swordsman either.

Swordsmanship is a skill, you can't use it without having certain physical requirement, such as arms to wield the sword and use the swordsmanship, for example. Haki is also a skill, you can't use it without having certain requirements, such as arms to punch or legs to kick, or a weapon to imbue it with.

What i'm saying about main skill is formulated in these examples:

1. Swordsmanship is a skill, a technique in which you use sword. Parry, thrust, slash, are examples of swordsmanship moves. To use swordsmanship, you need speed, strength, precision, etc.

2. Let's say Broly from Dragonball is a swordsman. If you're a basic-level swordsman, you swing your sword at the most basic (lowest) swordsmanship skill level, but you put Broly's physical strength in that swing, it's not pure swordsmanship anymore that makes you stronger. It's not swordsmanship anymore that makes you win, but more importantly Broly's class physical strength.

3. If you're a basic-level swordsman, you swing your sword at the most basic (lowest) swordsmanship skill level, but you imbue your sword with quake, it's not pure swordsmanship anymore that makes you stronger. It's not swordsmanship anymore that makes you win, but more importantly the imbued quake.

So, the statement i want to make about my thought towards' Shanks' swordsmanship is:

If you are a basic-level (lowest) swordsman, but you imbue your sword with Haki, it's not pure swordsmanship anymore.that makes you stronger. It's not pure swordsmanship anymore that makes you win, but more importantly the powerful haki.

That is why i accept Shanks as a swordsman, it does not matter to me at all that Shanks is a swordsman, but i consider Shanks as little bit stronger than Mihawk. Because i interpret from the scenes that Shanks' main (strongest) skill, even when using his sword, is Haki.

I have no idea to which part of my post you are referring to. Neither what do you mean by equal/rival =! main skill?! You sure you mean me?
I mean on your previous post / posts where you state "equals / rivals are men with similar or same kind of technique / weapon / skill so Shanks must be the same kind of swordsman as Mihawk"

(??? i don't remember the exact post but i remember you posting that kind of argument), didn't you? :oh

Stop with your excuses. Croco has the weakest logia so far shown in the manga and he lacks physical strength and speed. That's why he is not a high tier. You think the Admirals are high tier because of only their logia?
At impel down, not only his prison level is the same as Jimbei (a Shichi also, so two similarities supporting my argument here, prison level and Shichi status) in level 6, while Luffy was placed on level 5, but when faced with the demon guards. Croc's strength in beating one of them was equal to Luffy's Gear 3rd and Jimbei's karate. Can you proof it to me otherwise?

Enel a mid-tier. He also lacks physical strength and most of all experiences! Enel is too confident in his loga, if sea-stone or haki is used, he is helpless. See Enel vs Viper. Any confident Haki is user would finish Enel pretty fast I assume.
You place Enel on mid, but i still place him on high. The destruction level of his logia is Kizaru / Akainu level. The reason Luffy didn't die the first time Enel shot him with his lightning, is that Luffy's fortunately rubber! Lightning's speed is multiple times the speed of human, even still faster than Luffy's gear 2! But Enel can't avoid the last Golden Rifle and said that it's so fast. This shows little inconsistencies that must be made when the main enemy is required to be defeated in order for the story to progress, it's not a proof that Enel's mid-tier.

Seriously, when did I ever say that Mihawk and Croco started talking? Don't accuse me with ur weird shit. There is a damn reason why I said that the battlefield was a royal rumble. Do you get it? There were more ppl beside Mihawk and Croco. Just like Mihawk's and Vista's fight was interrupted by the Pacifista, Miawhk's and Croco's fight must have been interrupted. Otherwise Croco wouldn't stand later helping Jinbei and Luffy. Not to mention Mihawk left the battle without scratches, even more proof that those two did not fight for real.
The one igrnoring the facts is you.
Flamingo didn't attacked Croco to intent to kill him. Rather to get his attention. Nothing more.
About proofs of Flamingo being stronger than Croco or Flamingo being high-tier: Well to be fair there are no proofs. But if you know anything about writing techniques, then you will agree with me that Flamingo will play a big ass role later. Oda is obviously planing sth big with him. He is definitely high tier, I have doubts on that. But unfortunately, I have no proofs. You can consider this as my prediction, which is not rly hard to predict xD
Okay, so i'll just say otherwise. Croc didn't attack Mihawk with intent to kill him. Rather to show Mihawk how badass he was. Nothing more. That was why Mihawk was still alive. Can that kind of argument be used? No, BlackHair, about this kind of things, you're the one who has no proof.

I'm not talking about royal rumble and multiple tasking thing, since it apply to all people in the war. But the royal rumble didn't change anything about the fact that those two opposing blows from Mihawk and Croc, also Dofla and Croc, had the same quality instead of different. And the panel didn't show that Mihawk is stronger. It showed the similar quality of blow. Please don't twist what the panel showed into the "actually it's the contrary of what the panel showed, Croc's life was actually spared by Mihawk because the Hawkeye was just using a tenth of his strength" maybe-theories.

That is why i accept Shanks as a swordsman, it does not matter to me at all that Shanks is a swordsman, but i consider Shanks as little bit stronger than Mihawk. Because i interpret from the scenes that Shanks' main (strongest) skill, even when using his sword, is Haki.

Agree to be a successful swordsman you need a certain level in athletics. But more importantly you need skill and experience too. A broly level swing means nothing to a master if it's predictable. It will just hit air. IMHO "the most powerful swordsman" can defeat any blade users. So WB was the strongest man. Of course he was, he's mass and size is above normal human. But if he's only muscle, in a sword/bisento (a longer version of sword) fight Mihawk will stomp him. Then it was revealed that he gained the title as a "quake" man. Now it made sense if WB is more powerful than Mihawk.

I understand where you stand. To you haki is another set of skill. And Shanks uses swords as a tool to channel his Haki. Like WB being a quake man. You feel shanks is sort of a "haki" man.

However I feel Haki is an upgrade not a skill. Like improving your haki will improve your swordsmanship in "similar" way your improved agility will. The word similar here implies that they're both positive upgrades to your swordsmanship. Let's say shanks haki is the strongest out there, just like WB strength. But Mihawk excels at every other area such as speed, strength, technique and experience. Now this is not actually facts. But I feel being your so called "haki" man is not enough to be stronger than someone.

Training your haki is like bench pressing. It doesn't "directly" improve your swordsmanship. But it still make your swing stronger. Because bursting your haki is similar to flexing your biceps. Though haki is more powerful than strength of course. While your bicep could scare off some sissies, haki could knocked them down. And unlike swordsmanship they help other areas too.

So what I do hope in the future is that Shanks shows that there is no such thing as "haki" man and that he's not completely a swords"man" either. Because I do feel you, it's a bit odd for me personally that Mihawk is stronger. And I want shanks to be stronger in the future. But there is no evidence that shanks is more powerful now. At most they are recently equal.

I have to disagree with your last paragraph. Thier strength at beating them was equal. Just like Mike Tyson and I is equal at stomping cockroach. Heck I think I can do better than him. If it shows their equality in power, then according to your own argument, Luffy is equal to crocodile and Jimbei. So gear 3 luffy is equal to Jimbei who's equal to Ace. He's also equal to Aokiji an admiral level who's power is almost at akainu power who kept up with WB. So does that mean gear 3 luffy = at least aokiji? Lol, I have to say no there mate.

Shanks' personal strength isn't a major contributor to his status as a Yonkou, it's his total military power (Shanks + crew) that makes him a Yonkou.

I don't remember Oda saying that anywhere in the manga.

And it's interesting to see that it was actually the CONTRARY with the Yonkou Whitebeard. Oda clearly stated that the Whitebeard Pirates controlled a part of the New World because of Whitebeard's personal strenght. The silver medalists of LVL 6 in ID were the first indication. Now with his loss for the Whitebeard Pirates, Oda showed that pirates dare to attack his territories even if his crew was about to come back. He also showed that the Whitebeard Pirates' flag did not mean anything anymore for New World pirates because of Whitebeard's death.

Wars are won with armies, not heroes. Would the full might of MHQ have any problem with Whitebeard on his own? No, WB is mere fodder before MHQ + 7BK. But Whitebeard + 16 persons as strong as Ace + 1600 men who all survived in the New World? That's another job altogether.

If you reread my post, you can see that I have " proved " with facts that in the case of Whitebeard, his own personal strenght was a major contributor to his status as a Yonkou. I don't really see the link between that and this answer.

Anyway, I'm sure MHQ and Shichibukai would have had problem against the single Yonkou Whitebeard, especially when you know what kind of power he has.
On a side-note, Shiki on his own had destroyed half of Marineford's town when he fought against MHQ.
