Square Enix announced that they're remaking Final Fantasy VII for PS4.

It's not the art style I would have preferred but I don't even care. As long as they don't fiddle with the combat or music too much I'm in.

I wonder if they will include all the old music - or if they will remove/remix/burn a few of the more unfortunate tracks...

They better not. I love all of it, especially the Golden Saucer theme. And I know I'm not the only one. I suspect it will all be updated but Square would be insane to cut or replace any of it because it's perfect.

The two biggest mistakes Square could make is messing with the soundtrack or the combat system.

If they do the fan wrath will be beyond anything Sqaure has ever experienced and I'm sure they are well aware of that. Can you even imagine what would happen if they turned it into an action RPG or replaced any of the most beloved soundtrack in RPG history? Nomura would have to go into hiding for his own protection and never ever come out.

If they do this right it is going to outsell Final Fantasy XV by a lot.

I agree Jammin but let's be honest, I could see SE do that.... Not the first time they made some hilariously bad choices even though they should know better. I mean I still have some trust that they will improve the game where it might be necessary, without changing it drastically, but I wouldn't be surprised either if SE fucks up.

Hype in Japan is real too btw, Terumi Nishii (a well-known animator) drew Cloud today:

I believe that but I don't think even Square would be stupid enough to actually go through with it. Purely for business reasons.

Final Fantasy VII sold more copies than any other Final Fantasy game. And it remains the best selling Square game of all time. Square's most successful action game Kingdom Hearts didn't sell even half that. They want those nostalgia sales along with new gamers paying to visit a classic with reworked visuals.

If they do this remake well enough I think they could potentially sell 7-8 million copies. Which would crush the sales of every Square game for the last 15 years.

The next update for FFVII Remake will be this winter. Nomura said that it when they'll reveal the official title for the remake and revealed this:

Speaking with Famitsu, Nomura reiterated that simply recreating the game’s graphics is not something to be excited about. Rather, “If you’re doing a full remake, it must be made with a different approach that matches the times. Because it’s now, and precisely because this is a full remake, I want to see what kind of fun is possible.”

“We’ve yet to show any screenshots from the game, but it has vastly evolved, so please look forward to it,” Nomura continues. “Again, this time, since the story is being handled by Nojima, that also means that there will be more work added to it, so please look forward to that as well.”

What was wrong with FF7, it was before my time so I never played it (but did watch Advent Children). Is it really that outdated if he says it needs to incorporate modern elements of games?

Well narrative-wise, there are just.. a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense, like Cloud riding a dolphin or walking in a deep sea. As for gameplay, I don't think it's necessarily outdated, it's just they have to make the turn-based system becomes more.. modern-looking, I guess.

There were a bunch of mini-games that could use updated. I don't think anybody would complain about that. Snow boarding, chocobo racing and raising, Tons of stuff in the golden saucer, there was even a strategy game in there where you defend a materia reactor. All that stuff could be redone.

Hopefully they aren't talking about the basic combat system though because that needs no updates. The materia system is better than any modern combat system in a Final Fantasy game. Needs a graphical update but other than that it's pretty much flawless.

As for the story, I don't think that needs much tweaking but adding more too it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Their stock prices went up through the roof as soon as the Trailer was announced. Even if they completely fuck up, this game will be bought in spades.

Darn I was hoping it would be the FF13 or FF Type 0 Battle system. The only olde FF I played was FF3 and it was so slow.

Well, I wouldn't mind if specific things of the game were updated. Provided they don't go specifically for gritty. As for the materia system, they should keep it. I wouldn't mind new combinations being possible though. The system was supposed to be flexible and allow for many combinations but to me it always felt like it could have done more in that regard. Fix a few plot points (or make them clearer at least) and add more materia and you got something which the fans should like. I guess they could incorporate all the weapons into the story and I wouldn't be surprised if they add a few things which link it to that guy with wings from the FFVII compilation. Given the compilation vincent should have a more prominent role. Or at least be a necessary part of the story. I don't think they would dare mess with the world map...

Many things would need to be upgraded to fit in with the times. This isn't PS1 era. I hope they don't listen to the fans and do it the proper way.
