I just had my first game of blitzball. OMG MAKE IT STOP! Its like someone attempted to induce seizures via a combination of football, chess and nightmares. I would have thought nothing in the game could be worst than yuna's voice acting but god was I mistaken.

Ok, I reached bevelle and somehow survived the aneurism caused by the nonsense sequence with that seymour guy and yuna's horrible voice acting (seriously, wtf?) and now I am at the bevelle temple hoping not to get a seizure. Its like this this particular part of the game was caused with the sole intention of getting causing brain damage or something. Hoping it ends soon. Hopefully I get some level 3 spheres soon, I really want that holy.

Blitzball really was terrible. I don't remember it being aneurism inducing though. Just really boring after you get a good team and figure out how to just destroy other teams. Which I remember happening very quickly.

I also remember the games being unfortunately long.

I dunno, for me it is as terrible as chocobo racing in FFVII (although that one was more likely to induce epileptic attacks rather than aneurisms). As a fan of FF games and RPGs in general I found the game boring, pointless and repetitive.

Anyways, question for anyone who remembers the game. How strong is my party supposed to be by the time I reach yunalesca? I have had trouble beating her and checked online about it and although I don't have definitive information it seems people have quite the insane parties at that point in comparison as to what I have. Some guy says you should train in an area until you can easily overkill stuff although in most places I usually leave while still having a more than decent amount of trouble not getting one shot by some monsters. Maybe I am really at too low a level at this point in the game?

Sounds to me like you are lol. I usually grind until I can auto attack everything. In X you gotta take into account elemental advantage and piercing more than usual. But yea, sounds like you need to grind a bit.

Wow, thats quite a bit of grinding.... I usually avoid grinding in this sort of game, I feel that doing so too much kinda beats the purpose of what little strategy you can apply here. Its a shame there aren't actual levels in the game so the question will invariably be difficult to answer. I guess I will grind until I have flare with lulu at least (which will be quite a bit).

Well, I am almost by the end of FFX. I thought I'd get the celestial weapons but upon reading on the thing it just doesn't make a shred of sense. As awesome as they appear, WTH? Obtaining them is excrucialingly..... well, just excruciating. I figured I was halfway through getting tidus' weapon but then I started trying to win the race and its horrible. Its not that it is hard to obtain the weapons, obtaining them is the exact opposite of fun. It kills fun. Even with its good points FFX is still the worst of the FF games I have played (7 through 10) there is no way in hell getting those things is worth it. Games are supposed to be fun, games are supposed to be challenging however there is something more than severely wrong with a game in which the challenge itself is the inherent excruciating boredom behind a task. Its already pretty bad that FF games have sidequests which are ordinarily so removed from the storyline that it would be borderline impossible to find them on a regular run of the game (seriously, the only way to actually pull 100% on a first run would be to backtrack and talk to every character available every time you reach a new spot) but the whole thing with the celestial weapons is just plain absurd. I am just at braska's final aeon, I think I am just going to grind a bit and then be over with the game. Game was fun although in many ways also a disappointment. I thought it would be like with FFVII where I initially hated the materia system and then ended up loving it.... In this case I started hating it and then kinda just warmed up to it at best. Is X-2 better than X? Not sure if I should bother right now. Yuna is easily the worst character in the game and her voice acting is terrible, I am not sure if I can handle a game centered around her and her teenage angst...

It seems interesting although it being subject to change kinda leaves the impression that the game could end up being completely different from that. It kinda seems like they tried to make advent children into a video game here. Not a bad concept at all IMO, I wonder if they can indeed pull it off. I do get the impression that as FF games get more realistic graphics wise the characters themselves become more and more emo. Well, characters were always pretty emo to begin with although with the PS ones the fact that the characters were so cartoonish in appearance kinda toned it down a bit. Still though, if the game is as awesome as it looks I might just have to buy a PS4.....

Finally someone else agrees that X was a bunch of crap. It just wasn't that good and nowhere good as other people make it out to be...similar to Chrono Cross imo. At least you have the willpower to actually finish the game, I'm in the air ship just before going into Sin and have no desire at all to finish the thing.

It's true that since VII the characters have gotten more emo, and have had less character development than some of the old school FF games. That's why I will always have FFVI as the best in the franchise...it had everything done extremely well. IIRC, most of the sidequests were triggered during the main story line.

X was a piece of crap even story-wise. Its story doesn't make a shred of sense. And don't get me started on those 200 Thunderbolt dodges in the Thunder Planes. Seriously, 200???

I guess there could be a culture barrier to some degree as the game is made by Japanese folk? Most Jap things usually have "cool" characters who are basically a bunch of emo people full of angst. Sasuke is perhaps the prototype for every "cool" character from before and that will come. I guess tidus is not particularly emo and he is usually quite upbeat but then again whenever we see one of his instroctpections it always seemed like he was about to cut himself. Seriously, how many characters have started out being basically sasuke? Cloud was a sword wielding dude who did not displayed emotions and thought he was the coolest thing ever until he remembered his past. Squall.... disturbingly similar. ZIdane broke the mold as he was mostly upbeat and together. On the other hand he needed the least development during the storyline. He just had a short existential crisis and then got over it.

And yes, the 200 bolt thing was painful to even read. I checked several sites until I was convinced it wasn't a typo.... Its just.... stupid. Its not like the thunders even come at a sufficient pace for this to make a shred of sense, it takes forever between them (at least my take on that).

^ I agree with everything except Sasuke. As a Literature and Arts students, I can tell you that Sasuke has extremely good penning behind him, which is why he's one of my most favourite characters. I won't agree on Cloud either, as the main ethos behind Cloud is an average guy who really couldn't become anything extraordinary. That makes him quite relate able. But, that's my opinion anyway.

Tidus was probably the most decent character out of the game. At least his whining made sense - his own father was abusive to him. I could never understand the so-called resolve behind Yuna's pathetic journey. I always laughed at her from start to finish. The whole dream sequence was a pile of crap that didn't make sense. If the Faith said that Zect became real when Sin touched him, then how the heck was Tidus a Dream?

If Sin/Yu-Yevon was drawing on all the dreams, then the Faith and the Sin shared the same dreams - as Zanarkand was the Dream? If all shared the same dream, then how was it possible to summon the Living Dreams for Fusion to make Aeons? If Sin killed many over the past thousand years and going by statues only four people ever defeated Sin, then how the heck did Humanity survive without High Summoners for thousand years? Pile of crap, I tell ya. Doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

That 200 dodges was always a nightmare. I mean, eve 100 would have been plenty. But 200 was just retarded.

Yeah Cloud's character and development was actually quite good. At the start of the game he was this cocky bastard that didn't really give a damn, then they slowly turned him into a relate able guy that didn't fulfill his dreams. (he even went retarded :cookiehand )

The thing about X is that only 2 of the characters were decent/likeable i.e LuLu and Auron. Nothing saved X imo.

Zidane (apart from that one part) and almost every FFXII main char disagree.

Sin only acted if a city grew too large. It wouldn't kill people who just happened to be around.
Furthermore it was never said how long the calm is. So why is it "bullshit" that only five summoners made it? If there wasn't a summoner around, Sin was around and destroyed cities which were developed. Nothing more.
Furthermore dream is the wrong word. "Dream Zanarkand" did exist in the real world.

Almost every FFVIII character,FFX and FFX-II, FF13 and it's sequels... I have no problem with emo characters as long as there is good character development, which after IX, is almost non existant.

I still disagree on sasuke. His only appeal to people around him and his notion of cool is that he plainly does not appear to care or react to stuff. Except when he is all about the angst which is all the time.... Cloud is a weird character. In FFVII he made it seemed like he was never good enough to join soldier. But then during the events of crisis core or something (where zack was a main character) we see zack telling him to hang in there as if there was hope for him to join. If we consider cloud was 15 or 16 and that zack was a level 2 soldier at 22 it kinda seemed like cloud simply didn't have the time to work his way up. He left nibelheim at 14-15 so I have my doubts about the expectation surrounding him being that he joined soldier at age 16... It kinda makes little sense that not being able to join an elite military unit at age 16 made him a looser. I guess the story wasn't all that thought out? And still, he did get the mako infusions and sephiroth/jenova cells during his time being experimented on. And somehow after being in a coma for a year or so he was somehow able to fight well with the buster sword and overall his skills passed for soldier 1st class level ones.

My guess was that the pressure simply got to yuna. She grew up with the idea that it was her responsibility alone to take care of sin. She grew up thinking she had to live up to braska's name... Which kinda makes her a boring character. She has no motivations or personality of her own in the end. She is just living up to expectations. I am not saying she didn't care about saving the world but characters are more interesting when their motivations are a tad more selfish IMO.

I thought more people had defeated sin but only a few of them were shown.

^ I just thought she was insanely boring and stupid.

My reasons for liking Sasuke and Cloud have little or nothing to do with this 'cool' idea. I like them, no love them as characters as they have this verisimilitude going for them. If a character doesn't have that, he is worthless in my book. Which is why in MGS - Metal gear Solid - I have always found Snake and Boss's Character to be ridiculous tedious and pathetic. Raiden and the original Boss - Joy or the woman who was killed by Boss in MGS3 - to be very very realistic characters. In fact, MGS 2 is the only time MGS ever came even close to being called a realistic game, as it dealt with the traumas of a young child solider. All his emotions, his angst, his life-history - the only time, I found Kojima's writing to shine through.

Despite all these reasons, Snake is more popular, because he is perceived to be cooler. Anyhow, my point is, I don't give a damn about coolness in characters, it's the background and how realistically a character is handled is what interests me.

Oh, she was definitely boring.

Thats a bit outside of what I was talking about. I meant to be very specific that I was talking about what is supposed to make those characters "cool" and what manga and other video games suggest is cool. Their backstory and likeability is a bit outside my point. Sasuke, cloud and god knows how many other characters in manga and video games are supposedly "cool" (beyond what we individually might think) because they are stoic guys who have a talent to not showing actual emotions to even the most outrageous things around them. Thet are cool because their apparent indifference lets everyone know they think everyone else is not worth their time. Basically the idea of cool mangaka and video game makers are selling is that of emos who look consistently bored and perhaps constipated except when they make their angst evident. And of course, to some degree they do manage to sell this idea of cool (although I am not particularly a fan of it).

The first wave of Lightning Returns reviews are out...and they are not good. Having a meta score of 68 so far.

I'm going to be very interested to see what the sales numbers look like in the internationally. In Japan it still has yet to crack .5 mil in sales. This may end up being a pretty epic fail on SquareEnix's part.
