Sorry. Hey, there's always a chance.:amuse

I think they'll get there one day, I really do. I'm just not sure it will be this game. With games like Bravely Default we see that Square does have talented people working for them and sooner or later those people will rise to the top.

In my imaginary dream world Nojima retire, I just don't think he's a good writer anymore, and Nomura should be working on Kingdom Hearts; that's what he's good at. For Final Fantasy I think they should draw one writing talent from outside of the company like they did with Bravely Default. Imagine how interesting a Final Fantasy written by Nisio Isin, Sorachi, or any one of like a hundred other talented Japanese writers could be?

And most importantly Square would do whatever it takes to get Yasumi Matsuno working on Final Fantasy again. A relationship they destroyed when they stupidly inserted Vaan and Penelo into Final Fantasy XII (Basch was the original protagonist).:facepalm
Of course. :kappa

Oh right I heard good things about Bravely Default. Was never able to play it though.

Kingdom Hearts is awesome as it is. (If we ignore the time travel bullshit) I don't need a FF that is way too similar.
That would be a FF filled with head tilts... At least I guess so. :D

FF XII was the end of the series. The setting was awesome. The cities looked so good and were so alive that it was probably the best open world the PS2 has ever seen right after GTA San Andreas. But the story... The characters... That was so damn bad...

So it appears Final Fantasy VII's remake is going to feature combat that is a clone of Final Fantasy XV's combat.

..I actually like it.. I mean, I guess it's not going to be completely different from the original, nonetheless I am still pumped for the game.

Hopefully we can play the game in 2018 :kappa

You might get your wish. It certainly looked further along than I expected it too.

It seems, based on what little we saw, like the game is just not for fans like me. This remake is Final Fantasy VII made for the fans of Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts. For a lot of people this will be probably be perfect. It's got the gameplay they want and a story that's actually not terrible for once. And on the positive side, I think they found a decent middle ground between the cartoony art style of Final Fantasy VII and the hyper detailed modern style of the games. So kudos for them on that.

I won't be buying it though. There are a few things about Final Fantasy VII that I think if you change too much than you change what the game is on a basic level. The methodical style of the combat system is one of those things to me. If it doesn't have that, I'm really just not interested.

According to the producer, it's not entirely action-based.

So I guess the relevant quote is this bit...

“I can’t say the new game is completely action-based, but it has more of that element and real-time than the previous game, however, what makes Final Fantasy and RPGs different from other games is that the players have the ability to choose weapons, capabilities and magic to be strategic minded, so while the new game has more real-time element, it will also maintain that strategy building element, balancing these two factors perfectly to enhance the gaming experience."

I do not believe him, sounds like PR speak to me, but it does seem wise to keep an open mind until I see more than a 10 second snippet of early gameplay. So I'll try to withhold judgment.

Loved every bit of it. It was fucking amazing. The combat in the original (bar the Materia system) was serviceable at best. I cannot wait for them to show more. I am glad this wasn't turn-based and they bumped up the design considerably. Midgar was slums, and lot of mature aspects were completely forgotten and left in the dust for goofiness. This will make up for it. A PC port is coming, so, the naysayers can play that. Also, I adored AC and KG is good from the battle perspective as well.

Godspeed, Nomura, Godspeed!

I actually was intrigued by the original concept when Nomura was the head of the project, but what's done is done and I won't dwell on that. The game looks promising with the return to exploration/airships...etc and Tabata sounds pretty dedicated and passionate about this game. Right now, I'm more excited about Persona 5 and Land of No Night (Nights of Azure), but I'll wait for the general reception on FFXV before buying it this time.
Tabata is taking the original concept forward. Who told you it was ditched?

To be honest I am a bit pumped about the game. Though the gameplay seems suspiciously absent from it, they might still not even have a clear idea on what to make of it. Balancing out the sort of strategy there was in a turn based game and a real time one along with how materia used to work cannot be easy. I found it weird that we didn't see more characters... I am also hoping that at least vincent gets more integrated into the story rather than being an optional character. I wonder if they are going to keep cait sith as he was...

I think they can. It's hard to tell too much from just the short look we got at the very beginning of the game.

The challenge of getting an art style that matches the hyper detailed modern Final Fantasy style with the goofier cartoony style of the original. And it looked to me like they ended up going with a detailed but non-realistic style. The bodyshapes of the character models were more cartoony than realistic. Yet at the same time the detail was very high. It's hard to tell to much from just the little bit we saw but that looked to me like a lot more flexable art style than the one they used for something like Advent Children.

The color palate looked absurdly dark but it kinda should look that way in the slums of midgar and it's pretty easy to imagine how they could take that art style to brighter places and have it actually work.

It was a first gameplay showing. We will see more. I definitely agree on Vincent. After AC and other games, you can bet your bottom dollar that he won't be optional. Same for Yuffie. Although, I am not a fan of the latter.

Edit: Wait, they have shown the gameplay trailer? There is clear cut GP in there.

It looks a lot like FF XV's gameplay, and I am happy for it.

It means Square has spent years inventing new and exciting ways to f#% this up.

I mean, I guess I could see how they could make the Midgar portion it's own thing but after that point dividing it makes very little sense. Except for the fact that they can charge more money for it.

Sure, why not? They are changing the genre and are chopping the story into incoherent bits. Lets get some multiplayer and microtransactions in there too. Or maybe just make it a MOBA.

Kudos to Square for really just underscoring how much they hate their fans.

You gotta respect the sheer audacity of it.:amuse

Looks like Square has come out with some clarification on this via Famitsu and Dengeki Onlike interviews with Kitase and Nomura

There is a lot of information there.
  • Multiple companies are working on the game. Cyberconnect2 was the only one named.
  • There will be 3 member parties with the player controlling only one but being able to switch to the others.
  • They claim the project is too big to be one game, hence the multipart thing. (Which I call BS on since it was obviously one game the first time)
  • It will feature new areas of Midgar.
  • Descriptions of the combat seem to indicate that it really is an action game now.

Impressive. So much fan support and SE still says "lol, f*ck you guys". How can they not know what fans want?
Also too big for one game? Bullcrap. Back then they released /34 disc for FF7 and the likes at once as well. I can almost say for certain that every single episode will cost at least 70$.
Sadly this is it. Square Enix finally died for me. Sure took a while...

So... FFVII is getting the young adult treatment? Whats next, is cloud going to be in an awkward love triangle, put an end to a distopic future and or apocalypse, and fight a greedy and misguided organization that think its saving the world? Ah, god dammit.

So Kotaku got a quote from Square saying

"It means instead of concluding in one entry, multiple entries are being considered in development. Each entry will have its own unique story. As a gaming experience, each entry will have the volume of content equal to a full-sized game."

The part about it each part having a volume of content equal to a full sized game sounds pretty bad to me. Not so much because of what that says about the size of that parts as what it says about the price. FF7 is a full sized game and obviously each part of the remake is going to be a fraction of that by the nature of it. But if they are already referring to each part as a full sized game then it's almost a lock they are going to put a full $60 price tag on each part. That means if the game has 3 parts fans could be looking at a price tag of $180.

Which is just madness.

And that does not even consider the amount of gameplay they are proposing... If each one really is a unique FF game then each one should take, say, 30 hours to complete. So... with 3 parts we get a 90 hour long game? I guess that wouldn't be too bad however this does sound a tad unlikely. And how long are they going to spend developing this games? If they go through with that then they are going to be done by 2035. Why is it so complicated to make this a simple FFVII with nicer graphics and updated gameplay? It does seem like they overtly hate the fans. What's next? michael bay designing cait sith into something worst than what he was?
