I love FFTactics too but it's not for everybody. It's for weridos like me who loooove turn based jrpgs. Ogre Battle Tactics, Disgaea, Vandal Hearts. These names bring up warm fuzzy feelings for me.

The plot is a great imo, but you consider it boring.
The tactics style is one of my favorites, but you dislike it.
The class change/upgrade possibilities is what got me engaged with party/strategy building, but you consider it draining.
So, no, it doesn't seem like you're missing out, lol.

I never said anything about the story.

I like to min max a bit so having to learn what sign is better for what unit is a bit draining, but nothing that cannot be learnt, I don't mind it.

Well, "a bit" might be an understatement. I cannot play persona without a schedule guide because of it...

Speaking of which, I'm looking for older games that allow that, @Jammin

Basically, something like an arpg with satisfying boss fights where you can build your character and see your NUMBER GO UP (basically, dark souls). SoTN kinda fits but it was a tad too easy (I'm playing the DS games soon). Paper mario also works. Wanna try Ys seven but I'm not sure there are builds in it.

Just rip up that list. Games should be fun. If your putting a game off usually there is a reason for it. Or that's what I've found anyway.

Yeah, the stuff that makes other people bored is why I loved it. Building out characters. Grinding up JP. Unlocking classes. The story is amazing too but it's all the ways build your party and then use it in battle that kept me coming back.

That's the thing that it's hard to find elsewhere. The management aspect. Which is why I poo poo games like Final Fantasy 13 which have none of that. It's also why I'm such a big X-Com fan.

I mean, I do have a PS3/4 and switch but just wanna emulate older things rn (so... Anything older than Dreamcast and psp/ds. GameCube/Wii might work depending on the game).

I mean if you don't mind JRPG type stuff I highly recommend the Suikoden games.

The first one is pretty short by JRPG standards (20 hours) and the story of both 1&2 is fantastic. And the second one is in my opinion the best JRPG of all time. Being one of the few JRPGs that was actually made with a more mature audience in mind (FFTactics, Tactics Ogre, Xenogears, and Vandal Hearts being the others). And it has the added bonus of extremely fast combat. An auto battle in that takes literally like 7 seconds. And story of both are pretty great and the BGMs are so very great.



But you said ARPG and that's not really what that is. With ARPGs I feel like generally speaking the modern ones like Bloodborne are just better than the older stuff like Alundra. Xenogears maybe? That does have a cool combo mechanic.

It's not old but if you have a gaming PC and are looking for an ARPG I suggest Mount&Blade: Bannerlord. Which is one of the games I'm playing right now.

Bannerlord looks cool, like what I expected three houses to be (or For Honour on roids).

If your looking for action mechanics JRPGs are generally just not the right place to look, especially older ones. They offer a good experience but that's not the type of experience they offer outside of like Zelda: Link to the Past.

Tbf all the best ones ARE from japan, lol. Fromsoft games, castlevanias... Ys Seven looks promising even if it doesn't seem to have a whole lot of building.

A fellow ex-Dota2 player! I switched to League cause I kinda got bored of Dota2 and also didn't think I liked the changes that came with the Monkey King release patch and didn't go back to it after that (Played a bit on Mars' release though but yeah I lost my love for Dota). May I ask what made you switch to Smite? I read that people are leaving Dota2 because they don't like the direction the game has taken since a few years ago. And I tried Smite but it felt awkward to play but I do think a MOBA based on gods is a pretty cool concept.

I don't really care much for stories in video games right now. That being said, I do like games with something super ridiculous and whack-y stories like say the games of GTA series. Speaking of games with whack-y stories I'm looking forward to playing Saint's Row The third remastered. AFAIK it's story and open world is whacky af. And I did play some of the new God of War but stopped playing it because, well, I got bored of it too. I might pick it up later though. Also, I'm really looking forward to AC Valhalla as well as Cyberpunk 2077.

Why did I switch to Smite? I'm a big history nerd and I have a huge passion for mythology so when I heard of Smite I quickly started and forgot about Dota2. In Dota, the community was really toxic and I wasn't feeling the new updates. I quit Smite basically for the same reason. New seasons and patches just sucked. Plus, at one point, I was really addicted to the game and it was almost taking over my life. I'm trying to slowly pick it up again but I guess we'll see how it goes.

I just enjoy spending dozens of hours in this massive world with a driving plot if that makes sense. Never played Saints Row because I felt like it was almost too much of a parody GTA. AC Valhalla looks really cool, looking forward to GoW 5 when it drops. I enjoyed Red Dead for a bit but never really got into open world games.

So after I had lot of time to think about FF7 Remake and Persona 5 The Royal, I can now say, that to me, both games were amazing.
BUT.
P5R > FF7R

As much as I loved the latter, Persona managed to be a tiny bit better.

Arkane's new game



Seems like Prey's DLC being experimental with genres was a prelude for what their next game would be. I'm interested, but honestly I think I would have still preferred Dishonored 3 or Prey 2...
