To me the leads are fantastic; the 'boring' ones are the old dudes, I guess they have to include them somehow to make the storyline feels connected in one way or another. Actors who play both Rey and Finn have amazing chemistry, and despite some plot holes that are unignorable for me, the movie is impressive and entertaining regardless how predictable it is. It's definitely a Star Wars movie.

My biggest gripe with the story is the villain and their goals. Reno sounds pretty much like a spoiled brat who's trying too hard to be The Darth Vader and couldn't. I am slightly disappointed because Poe is a relatively underused, cool-looking character in the whole movie, but thankfully we get so many awesomeness that is Finn and Rey as a trade-off. The cinematography is pretty nice too, I like some horizontal long-shots that are used in the desert and some of the shots taken inside the First Order.

Oh and the music, God, I do love the music. The OSTs are still as briliiant as ever.

Took half a day off from work to go see the force awakens. Worth it, the movie was amazing. There were a couple things I was disappointed about but overall the movie was amazing.

OK. You Will kill me. But I was really disappointed by the new star wars movie. I have one massive problem with it: it is extremely predictable. Jj abrahams did the same thing than with star trek. He did an hommage to the old movie. The issue is that it s not a remake, it s supposed to be a sequel. And after one hour, when you fully realize how close to the first movie this sequel is, every single twist is predictable.

One last thing, when kylo ren reveal his face:the audience was laughing out loud. He is supposed to be the vilain and each time his face is shown, the audience was laughing because he looks like a dork.

My expectations were too high.

The movie is okay. Amazing visuals. Lacks a lot of originality plot and story wise though.

Rey taking over the Millenium Falcon when Han Solo died reminds me of:

River taking over Serenity when Wash died.

Nah, i get what you mean. I wanted to laugh when i saw kylo at first. They could have picked someone that at least looked like ford. I mean, who the hell is that guy? Overall he wasn't convincing after he took his mask. They could at least have given him a scar or something. In my case it helped that expectations were low to begin with.

I think Kylo being as he is.. part of the "message" though, whatever it is. But yeah, despite stunning visuals and pretty solid build up, that moment was anticlimactic for many people.

The movie only exists as a bridge and introduction to a new story. Expecting it to be completely different from A New Hope is just silly to me. There's nothing wrong with something being derivative (as the original movies were in the first place) as long as they're done well.

Hopefully going to catch a late showing tonight, will post my thoughts later.

I enjoyed it a lot. Abrams definitely went a long way with healing the "wounds" that the prequels created. There are a few gripes I have with some of the characters and I felt the latter half to be a bit rushed, but overall I'd recommend it to anyone. Nice opening to a brand new story.

I think the point is that he's clearly a tortured soul. We didn't get that with any of the previous villains in the series honestly. Personally, I think it adds a bit more depth to him, but I would have enjoyed a bit more character exposition for him....well, I would have enjoyed that with all of the new cast, but probably Rey the most.

It's Adam Driver, one of my favorite young actors. This is a different role for him, but I think he really pulled it off well honestly.

And I honestly didn't think he was so different looking from Ford and Fisher to where it was distracting or anything

A scar? :lmao What, we need something other than him wearing all black to show he's the villain?

Yeah, on a second thought I think he's fine. He threw temper tantrum for several times in the movie, which is an obvious sign of his immaturity. Not to mention that his 'dark' side hasn't been fully developed yet. Maybe because he kiled his own father, he'd become the True Evil by the next movie? personally I don't mind his physical appearance at all.. it's just.. he seems less villain-y than what I expected.

Rey is super cool, in my book. Usually this gender-bending protagonist could fail awkwardly, but I like her a lot. If Luke is the father, who would be the mother though?

Yeah, I think that was an interesting choice, given the villains we've seen in past movies.

The fact that there is something still "human" to him, even though he does evil things. Vader got some of that back right at the very end, but almost every other time there's something just uber dark and robotic about most of the villains.

Well, in the case of darth vader he wore the mask because of his wounds and deformities. And then comes driver, finally a reunion between the hero and the villain, he takes of the mask and... there is just some dork under it with no remarkable features. It turns out there is literally no practical aspect to the mask. He doesn't even wear it for most of the rest of the film. We didn't need a scar to tell us he was evil, but it would have made sense if there was more to it than a punk throwing a tantrum and wanting to be like his hero. Also, how is this a young actor? At least he looks well into his 30s.

Driver is 32, but he plays characters in their 20s.

You didn't get that he was basically trying to be his grandfather? He worships his trashed up mask for gods sake... The fact that he takes off his mask and is seemingly normal-looking is the point.

of course i got that. He is still a whiny bitch throwing a tantrum. A tantrum that killed his dad but still a tamtrum. He never even met darth and we have no context on why he turned either which is sort of an important detail.

"Tantrums" I agree with, but not sure about the whiny bitch thing. I didn't really get that at all, just that he was clearly very angry and disturbed. Whiny bitch makes me think of Anakin in the prequels :lmao

Him killing his father definitely wasn't a tantrum. I'm not sure if it was completely planned from the beginning, but you could see it in his eyes when he made his choice.

How much context did the first Star Wars movie give? I too felt parts of the movie were a bit thin, but it's clearly an introduction. Maybe Abrams was trying too hard to not explain everything like the Prequels tried to do and went too far in the other direction, but I don't think it takes away from it as a film.

How about the Star Wars? I haven't watched all Star Wars episodes but this "The Force Awakens" the movie, according to reviews has characters who are worthy for the story. The plot is quite the same but interesting because it has a twist from the other. Personally, I would say that it has a great action so far and a good film.

Saw Star Wars 7--it was terrible except for the Jedi parts.
Overall, I felt the film was weak and slow, and merely felt like an homage forepisode 4,5, 6.
Fin was annoying for me. The villain, Kylo Ren, just made no sense. In terms of power, Yoda, Vader, Dukoo, Mace Windu, obi wan, and the majority of jedi from 2 and 3, seem far, far stronger, than he is...so how can he be considered almighty and evil?? again makes no sense.

Star wars 2 and 3 were the best.

I got the chance to see Episode VII and the film was mildly prejudice on the part of Finn's character and how he was completely portrayed. Here we have a character who's original name was a number and part of some Nazi like First Order group and upon wanting to leave the organization is given his name by another character as if, he couldn't name himself. Even his reaction to the name given was buck dancing and coon like, plus the sanitation joke on Finn was even worse than his clumsy behavior with the lightsaber
.

It amazes that the Disney executives still wish to portray Black men and women like this in their films and other forms of entertainment, but then again, they've always had a history of this. Look at Iron Man and how Don Cheadle's character is only allowed to follow and obey on every word spoken by Tony Stark as if, a slave or butler. But, it's not a mutual friendship like you see with non-black characters.

Interested to see how they do Black Panther in "Civil War".

Someone has a chip on his shoulder. I think your dormant insecurities are making you overthink things. The milk is gradually running out, my friend. Time to move on.

huh? The empire was destroyed, it wouldn't make sense to be as powerful as Palpatine or other Jedi during the Republic era. He's just a kid. The person portrayed as almighty and evil was Snoke, not Ren. Ren is just trying too hard to be like his grandfather and obviously has talent, but Snoke himself even said he needed more training.

Star Wars 2 and 3....I hope you don't mean the prequels? Revenge of the Sith was the best of the three, but if you think any of those movies were better than the original trilogy or the newest film, then you kinda lose all credibility with me, sorry. :oh

They are considered "original" for a good reason, so of course not. Plus. you can't compare the special effects, since they are years apart.

This new one just felt off. The fin guy just threw me off the whole time. It just felt like an homage to the original (4,5,6) with mediocre comedic scenes interjected.

If I was the director or producer, then I would have made a totally different saga, maybe like the first dark jedi's story.

Or they could have done a film based on Luke Skywalkers son's story (Legacy of the force).

I honestly didn't find it to be annoying, homage or not. I also thought the comedic parts of it worked, that's what Harrison Ford always brought to the character of Han Solo. I somewhat understand the Finn criticism. I don't have an issue with his character arc and why he did what he did, but his personality is sort of surprising, considering the circumstances. Even then, I still found him entertaining.

So you're an EU fan then? While I understand huge fans of those stories feeling dubious about the movie scrapping all of that, I also understand Abram's and Kasdan's desire to do something that isn't constrained by stories they themselves didn't create. I mean, let's face it, Star Wars was at it's best when Lawrence Kasdan was writing it.
