Yes! I do believe there is a connection, though I doubt he's her father. That is just irrelevant. I mean she could have been a student under Zeref's supervision, that could somehow make sense, though I don't know how she would have stayed alive with him around her unless, she was something like Mavis-before she got cursed, that is.

One more thing. They never actually mentioned that much about Layla's death other than a being an 'illness'. This makes it fishy. Because believe me, when a story is over with, all details would have been given, and here they haven't given details. Besides, Lucy needs some heart-moving calamity for her to get powerful, though the Tartarus thing made her better, she still has a long way to go. Something about her mother being involved-killed by Zeref for example(just a suggestion), would be so good. It would do the same as it did to Gray when losing Silver.

That's amazing but I don't think Zeref may had a hand in Layla's death. I believe it's related to Zeref's curse. Where his curse makes him and Mavis kill others as they value life I believe Layla and Lucy has something opposite to that. If you remember, Jude described how eerily similar the two are. Jude may have described it as blessing but I think it's their unnatural luck. This luck had allowed them to survive almost any situation where death would follow them. This luck might have something to do with Layla's death. I'm not sure it could be called luck. It should be revealed somewhere along the arc.

So i literally have this theory based on the fact that lucy, layla and mavis have the same hair colour that some how lucy is descended from the same bloodline as mavis on her mothers side, its a bit of a stretch but it would be kind of cool right? haha plot twist

Dimaria doesn't have to be Lucy's sister to be related to the Heartfilia's. She could be a cousin or Layla's sister (I think thats a good possibility).
If Dimaria looks different to Layla and they're related, its because she has more of her father's traits than her mothers. They key thing with the traits is that they all share Blonde Hair (recessive gene) and brown eyes, which even though it may not be much to go on, could be a hint that they're related in some form. Dimaria looking a little different could just be due to the coding of her DNA in that she has more of her father's traits than her mothers.

I don't think Layla is related to anyone but Lucy at this point. There really isn't anything to go off of but hair color, which is just a desperate appeal when it comes to stuff like this. I do think, however, that there is a chance that Layla may have been a Spriggan 12. The one that Serena must have replaced unless the Spriggans 12 were formerly the Spriggan 11.

I always wondered as to when zeref created the shields and their ages, because if Layla was one of them most of them would be not even born or children. Unless zeref gathered them over time I'd imagine it be hard to find mages of their caliber that easily, and Layla happened to be one of the first.

The only way for Layla to be a Spriggan, is in my opinion, for her to have been one of the original Spriggans (God Serena being her replacement).

I highly doubt Layla Heartfilia was a Spriggan... She was known to be good-natured and really has no reason for protecting Zeref. Additionally, I admit that I underestimate Layla's power as most of you will probably blow up at this comment but it's my opinion and I won't argue. Personally, I don't think Layla is strong enough to be Zeref's shield even though I don't know her power yet. It was also known that Layla died long before Lucy fully grew up and matured. From my understanding, God Serena did not join the Spriggans more than approximately 10 years ago, so there is a possibility that there were an original number of 11 Spriggans while Zeref was the emperor but God Serena just joined and became the 12th Shield. However, I will not rule out your guys' theories that God Serena was a mere replacement of a former Spriggan.

I agree Layla doesn't strike me as Spriggan material and the ages might not match up, but at this point we're just experimenting xD

August was good-natured as well from what we have seen. Igneel was also good natured as well, and he helped raise Natsu. A lot of people revere Zeref as well. It stands to reason that if Layla was born and raised in Alvarez, she would have been the same.

There is a slight possibility that Layla may one of the 12 . But what's make me wonder is that Layla "passed away" on the same day as when the dragons supposedly disappeared

I think Layla was responsible of sealing the dragons into their children. Maybe she even got something to do with END and she is the one who sealed the demon.
