I'm analyzing in more detail this in this post:
Better quality pic for better detail:
First things are first. I'm guessing we are getting a 90s, 00s, and 10s version of this in following weeks. So my issue, despite loving 80s is...
why does Shueisha love to forget 70s? Shonen Jump started in 1968 but for this type of stuff, it always seems Shonen Jump started in 1980, erasing the first 12 years of its existence like they didn't exist despite having some important stuff (I know Mazinger Z is banned, but they still have Otoko Ippiki, Kochikame, Ring ni Kakero, Cobra, Play Ball, Dokonjo Gaeru, Koya no Shonen Isamu, Doberman Deka, Circuit no Okami, Samurai Giants, Astro Kyudan, Harenchi Gakuen, etc)
.
Now entering in 80s per see, Shueisha picked the most important 5 titles from 80s, plus the 8th and 9th one. What important title is missing for me?
Captain Tsubasa. But seems this selection is based on pure action (inb4 in 90s we are getting Slam Dunk). I also miss
JoJo, since both Part 1 and 2 happened there (and currently they are at least more important than Sakigake, Rokudenashi, and City Hunter).
For the titles:
-Dragon Ball: Obviously. I would have put Kid Goku tbh. Saiyan Goku didn't happen until late 1989 and is more like Dragon Ball 90s version.
-Hokuto no Ken: Of course.
-Saint Seiya: Of course. Also, this goes according with what I say that I'm surprised that Saint Seiya has 25 or 35 million copies print sold in Japan; Shueisha gives it the treatment a title with +50 million copies print would get.
-City Hunter: Ok.
-Kinnikuman: OF COURSE. I'm still surprised Jump Force didn't include him tbh.
-Sakigake Otokojuku: I'm surprised they gave importance to it. It deserves it totally, but I've seen how in Jump 50th anniversary exhibitions for example they relegated Sakigake to a secondary plane, and in action terms it looks like JoJo is currently way more important than Sakigake (the opposibe happened in 80s).
-Rokudenashi Blues: I wouldn't have put Maeda here. I would have put Jonathan or Joseph. Yep, Rokudenashi was born in 1988, but for me is more a 90s title than an 80s title. Even aesthetically you can see how different it is from the other 6 representant titles.
Other action titles that could have been there: Cobra, Ring ni Kakero (in both cases, the manga ended in 80s, they were born in late-70s so they suffer from the curse of Shueisha thinking Jump started in 1980).
