Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Honestly don’t think attack on titan would have succeeded on jump. It would have easily been overshadowed due to it’s slow build up and bad art in the first few chapters anyways. That series isn’t really meant for a mainstream shonen magazine, more so a smaller monthly magazine or a seinen one. I don’t think attack on titan had anything to do with it because that series is seriously not meant for jump.
Keep in mind you can't compare current Attack on Titan with what it would have been if it was in Jump. Not only are things such as pacing completely different in weekly and monthly series (why I don't get people expecting Spy to be moved, luckily that has died down) but Monthly Shonen Magazine (which really isn;t a smaller monthly magazine btw) and Weekly Shonen Jump's editorial departments are completely different so editor changes (including what is actually changed) would probably make them almost 2 completely different series.

I don’t think attack on titan had anything to do with it because that series is seriously not meant for jump. I feel jump wanted a more diverse discography to appeal to different audiences (shojo- we never learn, non battle crowd but still like the shonen style- act age, horror/thriller- TPN, alternative/ seinen battle crowd-CSM, and ecchi- YYHHS) while still with each of these stories having the jump appeal of some sort (Act age- kind of have a small battle shonen approach to the acting world/ rivalries; CSM- extremely fast paced action/ witty humor; TPN- definitely the most unique one at least the first 115 chapters but does still go by effort, friendship, and victory; yuuna- teenage boys love tits). Attack on titan I think doesn’t really have that jump appeal nor does it fit with anything in the jump motto.
1)I can agree with the slow paced beginning and bad art could lead it to being axed

2)Attack on titan has fast paced action or at least from what I have read. Having Spider Man esque gear while fighting giant monsters and other people in their own Spider Man gear tends to be actiony IMO.

3)Also I never understood the whole "victory, effort and friendship" motto, I see it in other manga in general so how is it only jump that gets pegged with it (serious question)

4)Echii has alays been a part of jump. Maybe not as popular as action oriented or sports manga but still a significant one

only jump that gets pegged with it
they picked it. Just like I can go into McDonald's and ask for a burger with no lettuce but only Burger King's motto says "Have it your way". There's no rule other company's manga can't have the same style.

No point in trying to understand it now. Jump retired the motto sometime in the 2010s.

I don't disagree with the bigger point, but Shingeki doesn't run in Monthly Shonen Magazine (which I agree, isnt small at all), it runs in Bessatsu, which is in fact a smaller and newer magazine (it began together with shingeki, I believe).

We never learn is not a shojo or even shojo-esque. It has and always will be a shonen manga that appeals to males. Just because there are girls being moe/cute does not make it "shojo"(manga targeted towards girls). Idol anime, harem anime, and cute stuff like K-On and Umaru are targeted towards male audiences, and I recall the latter two are both from seinen magazines. Closest to being "shojo" in Jump is prob Mitama(don't read so not sure, but seen some people bring up the comparison and author being a fan of a shojo manga/magazine) and even that is a stretch IMO.

I remember seeing a picture posted that shows the ratio between male and female readers and WNL and Yuuna had like 80%+ male readership. Stuff like OP, Haikyuu, Kimetsu had closer to even distribution, if not slightly favored towards female readers.

Personally, I think it has to do with the EiC change that allows stuff like Act-Age and Chainsaw to run in Jump. Nakano mentioned something about them in an interview(someone can remind us specifically what he said?) about those two being either different than Jump's usual or his faves or something.

And I do agree that stuff like Neverland and Chainsaw were allowed serialization because of missing out on AoT. I hope that the success of these types of series will inspire the next generation of Jump to take inspiration from darker stories instead of the usual stuff like Naruto or DB. Imagine a newbie making a hit and getting an interview and saying "Chainsawman" instead of "Naruto."

Last time I checked, Heishi and Nakano are two different people.

That’s the thing it doesn’t run in monthly shonen magazine (which is actually one of the hugest monthly magazines). It is serialized in bessatsu shonen magazine which the magazines main purpose was pushing the boundaries of what shonen manga can do (basically seinen targeted at a young audience which is no where near what jump is). Since the magazine only have a 60,000 copy circulation and started with 10-12 series there was no need to censor dark and mature expressions and no need for it to be axed during its first few chapters. Shonen jump on the other hand had 20-23 series running during 2009, filled to the brim with hit series, was beyond mainstream, and is the go to magazine for preteen age kids due to most series at the time going by the shonen jump motto. Again it’s poor art, extremely long dialogue, and slow pacing on the first chapter is the reason why it would have been cancelled Zipman style. Also the fact that it is a weekly magazine makes it even worse as a bunch of the slow pacing for attack on titan is important so it either wouldn’t be as good or there would be a substantial amount of development each chapter.

I didn’t mean that it was 100% shojo I meant that would have a good amount of appeal to the shojo crowd while also appealing to the core readership of shonen jump.

No point in trying to understand it now. Jump retired the motto sometime in the 2010s.
Ok that doesn’t make any sense. Even if there are a few series that stand out from the rest (even the more stand out series goes by at least one thing in the motto) that still doesn’t change the fact that the majority does still go by it. The majority of jump series are still action and or comedies that still go by the slogan. Probably the only series I can think of that doesn’t go by any of them is death note ( even then both L and light work hard to get to there goal so that can be considered as effort.

TPGW newest chapter was by far my least favorite, I didn't like the development, I didn't like Aino, I didn't like the characters interactions, writing, and misunderstandings, I didn't like the superforced pantyshot
depending on how the story will go from here I might end not investing in this title

on the other hand, the newest chapter of Moriking was my favorite so far, although it really doesn't do anything out of the ordinary, the same gags, misunderstandings, infodumps, Fast and Furious level of trying hard to be wholesome with MUH FAMILY.....maybe my expectations were lowered by TPGW

I don't care about Bone Collection, nothing about it appeal to me at all

In Yozakura, remember my comment about Taiyo being a Mary Sue? in this week chapter he literally took a bomb explosion head on, shook it off, then tamed a wild wolf that hated him by his pure heart in just a couple of pages,
is there anything he can't do??

underrated
Haikyuu wasn't the only sport manga in WSJ after all
Yozakura has to be one of the biggest disappointments of the past several serializations along with GOTW

Well, yeah, editorial itself outright said it's almost inevitable at least some fingerprints of the motto will appear if just because of how author influences are works which were produced under the motto. But the motto itself isn't in use, and Jump's editorial don't enforce it.

Of course, it probably does/doesn't help that the readerbase doesn't really like a lot of starker deviations. From what Marcello told me Time Paradox has a significant hatedom in Japan on the basis of Sasaki being talentless loser who plagiarises another persons work for fame.

I don't consider it a disappointment as much as it's just not much of anything. It's a series with decent ideas but literally zero execution which seems to just mindlessly drift between premises on a whim without much cohesion.

It's better than Agravity, at least >>

I think Yozakura is satisfying enough, it's a fun light read each week that I'm happy to see around but won't miss when it's gone. It's fine having some series like that.

What Jump axes do you think would be successful and big hit right now if they were serialized in a different magazine exactly as they were(excluding the rushed endings, as they wouldn’t have ended)

I don't know about successful, but The Last Saiyuki, could have easily survived if it was in Sunday or Champion I think.

Since shonen magazine is known for its mystery/ death game manga than I would probably say enigma and psyren (technically can be considered way to long to be considered canned but looking at the toc and sells it was definitely underrated). I feel they would have been extremely massive hits on those magazine. Both series are not only my favorite underrated jump series but one my favorite jump series (only set backs are rushed endings). Both have a good amount of content with enigma having 7 volumes and psyren having 15 volumes.

Look, if the politically correct was the reason to hate time paradox, then chainsaw man and undead unluck should have been canceled already, after all there are many things wrong with these works much worse than the plagiarism addressed in time paradox.

...When the hell was this about political correctness?

This is about a sizeable amount of the JP community not being interested in trying to sympathise with a plagiarist. They take this seriously, remember Yuki Suegetsu having her career nearly ruined because of accusations she "traced" Slam Dunk?

I think what he was trying to say was why are they letting the sexual assault jokes in undead unluck slide but not the plagerism in time paradox ghost writer.

This is totally politically correct, friend.

And that's a stupid reason to hate a manga just because of the theme.

To add to that a lot of jump manga have worst themes in there manga yet they don’t receive a significant amount of controversy.
