Long post incoming... Because sometimes I just get excited while writing or something lol

So I just saw this article on ANN which says, "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Is 3rd Manga to Sell Over 1 Million Copies of 1 Volume in 1st Week".

And it obviously means "In the history of Oricon charts" or something, because obviously other titles like Dragon Ball or Slam Dunk must have sold 1 mill first week too...

And then I entered the messageboard to see if you guys had discussed it... and then I saw @MangAniMY's chart... Right now Kimetsu has 21'000,000 sold with 41 weeks left, there's some a real chance it might beat One Piece's numbers from 2011! Or do you think it will run out of gas before reaching OP's highest numbers?

It currently has 24 chapters yet to be collected into tankobon (So that's 3 more volumes minimum)

Heck.. If Shueisha wants to they could end up releasing like 6 volumes total in this fiscal year, volume 18 was released December 4th just some days after Oricon chart's last day IIRC (It was in late November IIRC), volume 19 on February, so if they continue this pattern they could release the volumes:

Vol 18 was released on December 2019.
Vol 19 Feb 2020. (2 month gap)
Vol 20 April 2020
Vol 21 June 2020
Vol 22 August 2020 (This is where the manga chapters are currently at probably, chp 193 )
Vol 23 October 2020

That's six volumes in a fiscal year and heck if they want to be extra sneaky or really try to dethrone One Piece's record Shueisha could release Vol 24 in November 2020 (Assuming Kimetsu doesnt' end before of course)... But that's unheard of, right? Like Shueisha wouldn't release a seventh volume of KnY just a month after its prior volume release? But they have done that, like release volumes month to month? I mean I can see them doing it IF they want to battle One Piece's record...

I'm gonna just assume they release up to volume 23 of the series (So that's an extra four more volume sales for this fiscal year), and I'm gonna assume each of those volumes ends up selling around.. Say.. 2.5 million copies, making it 10 million in those 4 volumes.

So if KnY right now on February 14th has sold 21'000,000 and sells 10 million.. That's 31 million, One Piece 2011's record is 37'996,373 copies sold...

It's a scary thought that One Piece's record can be broken, but I think everything I listed here could very, very well happen.. In fact it's likely to happen

Each volume of KnY has sold around 1.8 million, though that info is a week old and with Kimetsu sales... A week old must mean that at least each volume sold like 100k so I'd guess so far every volume from 1-18 has sold around 1.9 mill

Also some volumes sold around 130k-150k last week but this week (Feb 3rd-9th) Oricon numbers are around 90k for pretty much every volume of the series ranked in Oricon, that's a decline, expected obviously.. BUT there are more reprints announced for KnY volumes...
2/20 Kimetsu no Yaiba Volume 19
2/26 Kimetsu no Yaiba Volumes 15-18
2/27 Kimetsu no Yaiba Volumes 1-14

So that must mean that the decline is not because of demand finally being satisfied but due to the contrary, that there are not enough volumes for people that want them (and thus the coming reprints in late February)...

BIG TL,DR for anyone that didn't read all this and just wants to comment without having to necessarily having read everything I previously wrote:

Kimetsu no Yaiba currently has sold 21 million, One Piece's record sales were 38 million back in 2011.
Do you think Kimetsu will break One Piece's historical record? (the highest record Oricon has ranked.. and maybe the highest record ever? Though we will probably never know)
Kimetsu has probably 4 more volumes coming this fiscal year, so if they sell 10 million in those four volumes that makes it 31 million total sales for KnY, Kimetsu would "just" need an extra 7 million which it mary well may sell thru backlog...

As of now each volume of KnY has sold approximately 1.9 million give or take, so for the 19 volumes to sell that extra 7 million needed to dethrone One Piece (In this particular example, that is)... Each of those extra 19 volumes would need to sell 368,421 more per volume.

So final TL,DR if you really don't wanna read anything: according to my calculations if each volume of Kimetsu no Yaiba ends up selling around 2.2-2.3 million copies it will dethrone One Piece's record, do you think that will happen?

Also am I using Oricon correctly?? I used this website: https://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/obc/w/2020-02-17/p/2/ But I always see other better looking graphs and numbers getting posted so maybe there' something I'm missing in the Oricon website??
That's a lot to read lol, but just pointing out that vol 20 will be likely released on May-June (it would interesting if it's going to be released along with the movie premiere or just days before, considering if the movie will be released by summer).

I'm sure that peak will be 2.5M but like always, it's unpredictable and who knows what kind of boost will the movie give.

Director: Makoto Moriwaki (PriPara)
Writer: Kazuyuki Fudeyasu
Character Designer: Satohiko Sano (Heybot!)
Composer: Akimitsu Honma (RIN-NE)
Studio: Bandai Namco Pictures (later seasons of Gintama)
Though, if I'm gonna be completely honest, I'm kind of hoping for Iruma-kun staff to, well, keep working on Iruma-kun. xD Either way, going back to Yozakura before we go off topic. It feels like something a studio like A-1 would tackle. Either that, or it could be a brand new studio that comes out of nowhere, like what tends to happen nowadays.

Actually, if I'm allowed to ask, if you can have any currently running manga or anime in Jump cross over with any currently running manga or anime from another magazine, which two would they be? Personally, I've had the really silly idea of Demon Slayer's main leads and Hashiras head over to Iruma-kun's school.
Quints x Bokuben, would be nice.

If the peak is 2.5 million (as in every volume selling that before end of the fiscal year) then it would defeat One Piece.
Scary thing is.. I also thought that the peak must be 2.5 million, so even I, unconsciously think One Piece will be defeated :/ Though hopefully not lol

I'm not going to get too into the Samurai8 argument because it's been done to hell and back at this point, so I'll just say this: S8 is the ONE series that cannot claim "lack of recognition" as one of its problems. If anything you could argue the opposite, with the overshilling at a point where Japan was more interested in series like KnY and TPN (both of which weren't getting enough stock in the shops because Shueisha was busy pushing S8) damaging it.

Of course it doesn't have, i'm far from being a fanboy of One Piece but you can't really compare OP story and characters to Kimetsu no Yaiba, Gotouge is good in doing a solid and good battle shounen but that's it, Yaiba has probably the most "straight to the line" story on the current SJ, there's nothing going on in the story besides the "we hate Muzan!", there's no complexity, mystery or anything, is a very formulaic story about demon slayers killing demons and Muzan being the despicable big boss that everybody hates.

Still, is a very solid battle shounen with a charismatic group of characters, for me a 8.5/10
Man this "worthy" or "unworthy" stuff is seriously getting tiring. Seriously guys, stop reading so much into it, holy shit. Trying to act like any series would have the same degree of success with an ufotable adaptation is "Cope 101" material.

Have to say, Pero, I often don't quite get why you do these things, but the effort is still really impressive.

Just imagine Toriko / World Trigger or Dr.Stone with the same adaptation quality as Ufotable's Demon Slayer: It wouldn't reach the same succes.

People need to stop saying ''it is all because of the anime''. Lots of things made the succes of DS, of course the anime, but the characters are really important too. Readers are just statisfied with this kind of ''simple'' battle story.

Another reason for the success of Demon Slayer is the pacing imo. Aroung 20 volumes and we're in the final battle.

Anyway there's not only the anime, you need to consider Gotouge's talent.
Toriko definitely would have 😬🙃

You give waaaaaay too much credit to Toriko, mate.
Well, DS numbers are unreasonable (for anything really, even for DS itself), but it's not like we would know. The problem wasn't just the anime, but their whole approach. Those idiots chose a completely wrong target demographic just so they could have their second One Piece. If they pushed more its over the top violent and throwback side it could have done significantly better, maybe even better than anything besides those two in the magazine now, but million seller is a big reach. Or maybe not and Toriko's appeal is too niche in this generation...

I do think that, ultimately, its appeal wouldn't be able to survive the readership turnover (about five years, per Oda). That said, Shueisha and Toei's handling of the series definitely didn't help.

Except One Piece did it better... with a movie by Toei Animation?
I think people are crediting Strong World and Toei a little too much for One Piece's big boost.

For starters, Oda oversaw production of Strong World. It was the 10th One Piece movie. Most of which had been hit or miss. A couple were even adaptions of manga arcs the anime had already adapted. So Oda writing Strong World was the first One Piece movie he'd had such a direct hand in, and the movie both benefited from him being directly involved in the writing, and them advertising his involvement. In the short volume that came with the movie ticket in Japan, he even put in additional hype for the movie by saying that it would be Luffy's last adventure as a 17-year old.

One Piece in general also received a lot of extra advertising at the time. From full page newspaper ads and Luffy appearing on the cover of a men's fashion magazine(owned by Shueisha) before Strong World was released, to Luffy appearing on the cover of all Shueisha owned magazines in the months immediately following it.

Meanwhile for the manga itself, it was in the middle of it's climactic Marineford arc, as it built towards it's chapter 600 mile stone and major events were happening. An excellent point for new readers to jump on and be retained by exciting action.

So Toei didn't randomly make a good movie on it's own that was randomly a massive success that boosted One Piece's manga buying fanbase by 1.5-2 million people who spent the next couple years collecting the series. Instead, Oda stepped in to make One Piece's tenth movie as good and as hyped as he could make it, while Shueisha stepped in to do significant amounts of advertising both to bolster the movie, and take advantage of it's success to further promote One Piece. So Toei's to thank for Strong World being a well acted and animated movie. But the boost One Piece received around that time had a lot more to do with Oda and Shueisha than with Toei.

What happened to Promised Neverland?

It used to be shinning gem everyone adores from WSJ new lines back in 2017, now barely anyone mentioned that masterpiece overshadowed by the black horse Kimetsu.

Well, TPN is like a early bloomer genius, who was doing the best in primary school, but never reached the high it was supposed to, and got somewhat forgotten.
Contrast to that, KnY is like diligent, hardworking student, progressed steadily, then suddenly discovered a major discovery late in its career and got ton of recognitions.

It's most likely that The Promised Neverland was quite popular from the start, but Demon Slayer only had its surge in popularity recently. Not that no one likes TPN anymore, I love it personally, it's just that its "everyone is excited about me, even random casual people" time has passed.

Oooo boi, this argument.

Look, lemme put it like this, One Piece's story and cast might be big, but you seem to mistake that for depth. Because, like Toriko, what One Piece has in scale it loses in terms of everything else, namely emotional connectivity and throughline. OP's cast have very little in the way of arcs or depths at this point, it's all large moving pieces.

I'm doing an essay elaborating on this so I won't go into too much depth (might share it here), but I think the simplest explanation for Kimetsu's rise is simply that people cannect to the characters. Tanjiro and his allies have a strong, fleshed and diverse set of personalities with backstories and emotional resonance that each make themselves easy to get attached . It's the same deal with MHA, BC, JJK and plenty of the other series which are popular today, they're all heavily slanted to the characters because that's what readers want.

Like, there is a pretty obvious reason why Jump's current readership make up the minority of One Piece's.
I’ve seen countless posts of yours saying that OP doesn’t have any depth and crap like that. You mean to tell me that people didn’t connect with the straw hats which might be the only main cast out of any manga that is constantly the most popular in every poll ? People didn’t connect with Nolands story ? What about WB ? I mean heck, what’s depth to you ? You also fail to realize that Oda spent 600 chapters in order to develop the crew and their characters. Do you even realize how insane of a number 600 is ? Most series don’t even come close to that. After the time skip Oda took his time to develop the secondary characters since you really can’t do much anymore with a cast that’s been the constant focus for 600 chapters.

Also how is the blue bell can a manga be, by far, the best selling series in history without the readers connecting to the characters ? Do you even read the stuff you type ?
