Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

Somehow I find it weird that every time OP is in the magazine as of late, something either is higher than it or is used to prevent it to be #1. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but it does feel odd.

Oh...Gintama movie...though wondering if this is Sunrise-made or LA, this should be interesting. (though I wonder if Sorachi is going to gripe about the series just getting a bit too popular...then again it's just a means for him to gripe anyway)

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

1 - Gintama
2 - One Piece
3 - Beelzebub
4 - Toriko
5 - Inumaru Dashi
6 - Sket Dance
7 - Kuroko no Basket
8 - Houkenshitsu no Shinigami
9 - Psyren
10 - Ane Dokii
11 - Wajima
12 - Bakuman
13 - Medaka
14 - Akaboshi
15 - Kagijin

Is Gintama that high because of the announcement or has it managed to steal OP and Naruto's position for a second time? I sure hope it's the latter.

Shinigami's debut was nothing impressive, it seems. Seven ranked series above, seven ranked series below. If I recall, Medaka debuted at the exact same place...

....so the one before was fake?
well, bad luck for Hokenshitsu i guess, although it isn't really that bad for a start.

First the obligatory FUCK YEAH GINTAMA MOVIE Fanboy spasm, and now the inital worry that it'll suck. God being an anime fan is an emotional roller coaster! At least Gintama's FINALLY getting some respect though.

Hmm~ Gintama above OP is good, although hardly well deserved. (I love Gintama more than OP, but I know who's higher on the epic scale.) Hmm, with this kind of announcement right off the bat (dude isn't it still October?) I wonder what else they have in mind for Gintama?

Post 650! And what a great day to post it is :)

Since that is the real one, then yeah Shinigami's place is less impressive. It didn't do much higher than its predecessors. Though not debuting in the bottom 5 like Kagijin is still good for it.

I won't complain about Gintama beating One Piece. Its nice to see something that isn't the big 3 on top. I like Toriko's, Beelzebub's and Sket's positions. Kuroko is still far too high though.

Ane Doki just barely missed the bottom 5 this time and Psyren is only one above it. I wouldn't be surprised if both happen to collapse again next week but I'll hope at least one of them can do better.

Good too see that One Piece isn't first, I love that series, but the latest chapters are just garbage, total chaos is cool, but.. then again, it's not.

Glad to see Toriko where it belongs, not so glad to see Beelzebub so high, it's mediocre, it should be in the middle, come on. In the top 3? Hell no

Me too, the OP chapters haven't been bad, but I was expecting a bit better during the war, Japanese fans maybe feel the same way, and good that Beelzebub is 3rd.

Yeah, I should have known that first TOC was a fake. Thinking Shinigami would start in the top five, how silly of me. Now I think it will do just as Medaka did. Shinigami's rank is a lot less impressive, somehow I feel like it will start circling the drain soon. Glad to see a Gintama movie is coming. About time.

I'm really curious about that. I have no idea what Jump fans will think of it.

My opinion about the new series that is so hard to not go axed today, because jump have so many established series today, and to a new series to live it need to be different in any style of teh others.

Which Rilienthal totally is, but for it not to be axed next year.. I doubt it.

But that's my own personal opinion, I liked it, but it's just not.. Jump-like..

I personally disagree. We've had a lot of fairly recent series do well (Toriko, Beelze, Mago, Bakuman - and not all by established mangaka), and others that aren't doing too badly at all (Sket, Kuroko). Those aren't what I'd call established series - well, they are now, but they're also recent, and they made it to the top. We've had very few series get axed this year that weren't consistently at the bottom of the ToC. It's hard not to get axed if you suck - if you don't, there are so many series that are less popular that these series (Ane-doki, I guess - Psyren's a better example) can easily live for a while. There's been a lot of buffers recently.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

^QFT

There are currently 22 series in Jump. 14 debuted in 2008 or later. Currently the only series two or more years old are: One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Reborn, Gintama, Kochikame, Sket Dance, and Jaguar. I am not counting HxH as it is not currently serialized. Breaking down further there is five remaining series from 2008 (Psyren, Mago, Toriko, Bakuman, Inumaru), and nine from 2009 (Kuroko, Beelzebub, Medaka Box, Akaboshi, Ane Doki, Kagijin, Wajimania, Shinigami, and Rilienthal). If I remember correctly only 3 series from 2009 have been canceled (Mesiter, Bokke - san, and Hoop Men). Because Sket Dance is the only new series leftfrom 2005 - 2007 period while a number of established series have ended or moved, new series have been safe for the last two years. Next year should see more cancellations as Naruto is the only established series guaranteed to end.

Of the fourteen series from 2008 and 2009 only three are currently in danger of cancellation; Kagijin, Akeboshi, and Medaka. Going into issue 1 it is almost guaranteed that at least 11 series from the last two years will remain.

And I think a big reason for that is because of all the established series that have either ended or moved over the past couple of years.

Prince of Tennis and D.Gray-man (two of Jump's biggest series) have moved to SQ; To-Love-Ru, Eyeshield 21, Neuro, Muhyo, and Mx0 all came to an end. Because of that, the magazine has been more open, allowing series like Psyren to survive when they wouldn't have in the past.

Barring more established series coming to an end soon, I doubt we'll see as many series lasting for awhile last year. Just like after the great 2004, 2005-2007 were rather less forgiving to new series.

Next year should see more cancellations as Naruto is the only established series guaranteed to end.
Doubtful that Naruto will end next year. I think the remaining plotlines will carry it through until early 2011, personally.
