Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

These are the first week sells number only.
Psyren #7 (59,693) #6 (47,028) #5 (41,351) #4 (37,581) the volumes before those didn't make the top 30.
Volumes #1-3 plus the weeks of unknown volume sells It could be near 500,000.

It doesn't sell as much as mago or sket dance but there's definitely a signal that more people are appreciating psyren and psyren's fanbase is getting bigger it seems,

#4-5: +3770
#5-6: +5677 (+1907)
#6-7: +12665 (+6988)

-> I think there have been numbers of previous volumes too and I wouldn't be surprised if psyren's numbers have doubled with these. Its position on the ToC is quite consistent to its selling rates. No?

Psyren is a series that could ultimately surprise us with it's fanbase, particularly if an anime finally comes in 2010. It has the potential to either increase to a much bigger base if that happens...or be more of a cult classic akin to Neuro.

The problem is, Psyren yoyo more often than it's staying high in TOC. For weeks it would go high, then some weeks it woudl yoyo or stay in the bottom. I think Psyren would have been more successful if it was serialized in other magazine like Gangan or GFantasy. Example: Kuroshitsuji (500k-600 series), Soul Eater (300k-400k series).
On another note, I just realized if Mago and Toriko become even more successful and reach 400k-600k, seeing that nobody ever expected Reborn or D.Gray-man to be the hit it is now, this is not impossible, it would mean that Jump have nine series that sold extremely well. which will mean hell for series that want to break into Jump, especially battle manga.

I think Jump should not serialize anymore battle manga until one of current battle series to finish, there isn't any more space for another battle manga. I think Jump should put other kinds of genres, like detective manga.

Asking a shounen magazine to not serialize anymore battle manga is asking a pinch too much. While I agree with you, I doubt Shueisha can go even a year without serializing a new battle manga.

I have to agree with Koen, Psyren's fansbase does seem to be growing. Worst comes to worst I see it lasting four years, shorter then fans may like but long enough for Iwashiro to tell his story. There will always be a less popular series to cancel, always an Asklepios, always an Akaboshi. As Stranger said, a day time anime will probably come out next spring and really boost the fanbase.

**tries to picture Psyren in GFantasy. Fails.**

Oricon is a national reporting service, similar to soundscan in the States and Canada. Tohan is a single wholesaler. Consider Oricon more accurate. Please, post a link to where you saw higher numbers from Tohan. I am interested. Preferably in this thread. Keep in mind this is not the first press, this is first week sales. By the time volume 48 comes out volume 47 will have sold 1.2 million copies or more. It's just they don't all ship in the first week. 750,000 is about Naruto's average for first week sales.

Anime News Network uses Oricons sales figures.
Well the magazine Sou reported that #41 sold over 1.5 million copies in the first printing, I don't know if there is some kinda of difference with this...

Also reportedly Toriko made an annoucement that it sold over a million copies but Oricon said it sold under 500k.

http://www.geocities.jp/wj_log/rank/ (If you can make sense of it)

Maybe you can shed more light into this, I'm no expert when it comes to stuff like this.

No, Naruto, nor any manga I've ever heard of has ever sold 1.5 million copies in one week. You may be confusing week with printing. First week sales are only the number of copies shipped to stores the first week of release. First printing is the total number of books printed, weather they are immediately shipped to store or left sitting in a warehouse until retailers order more. A second printing probably won't ever happen. For books that generally happens years later as part of a second edition. Conisder bunkoban and kanzenban second printings. The site you linked to is most likely posting the number of copies sold over a fairly long period. Naruto averages about 1.2 or 1.3 million copies sold per volume. 1.5 million would be a very reasonable number for total sales, not for one week. It takes One Piece a month to sell 1.5 million. Not to take anything away from Naruto, only five series average a million copies per volume. But no, there is absolutely no way a million copies in it's first week, let alone a million and a half.

The Toriko announcement was not that a single volume had sold a million copies, it was that every volume combined had. Quite an accomplishment considering that is a very old announcement, from around the time of volume 3 if I'm not mistaken. Volume 4 has sold more then 500,000 on it's own by now. Volume 5 will eventually do the same.

For more in depth discussions of manga sales, please check out the Manga Sales thread. A nice place to see the wide world of manga outside of Weekly Jump. New charts come out every Wednesday.

the first printing does not mean the first week, but the whole week after the first release, because if the stock sale is consummated the publisher prints a second edition, so it's natural for naruto achieve this number for the first printing, the highest number of copies sold ever it's 2.600.000 copies for one piece volume 27

Akamaru Jump is all one shots. The featured one this issue is by the mangaka of Dogashi Kaden. There is always a chance one is picked up for serialization; many, many Jump series begin that way. Kagijin most recently.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

I think the round for cancellation going to start at issue 41, and I think the editors have to cancel at least two series in order to start next new series line-up. The Akaboshi is going to be one of them, and Medaka might go along with Akaboshi because so far, Medaka's ranking is pretty similar to Bokke-san's ranking (well, actually slightly better than Bokke-san). If it didn't get another colour page or didn't escape from bottom 5 by issue 41, I think it is very high chance that Medaka will get axed.

How other people think that Medaka going to cancel with Akaboshi or other series going to get axed instead of Medaka? I'm doubt that Medaka going to get axed before Akaboshi because it is doing slightly better than Akaobshi, so I think if Medaka get axed, it might be cancel with Akaboshi in same issue.

I'm sort of having a hard time placing when the new series (if there are any this time around) are coming for one particular reason: Naruto. Issue 43 (if going by the way OP was treated back in '07) will be the official 10th anniversary of Naruto, and therefore any new series that come have to start either before or after that issue. Hopefully the Jump people have it settled and we could get a couple more to finish out the year with, but who knows at this point.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

I think there won't be any new series until after Naruto's anniversary. Cancellations could be issue 41 and 42, new series in 44 and 45. Considering the only series in danger that I like is Medaka, and I don't love it, I'm rather unconcerned about cancellations. I'm tired of talking about Akaboshi; the sooner it goes the happier I'll be.
