Re: xxxHolic 134 Discussion / Prediction Thread
I know it's been a while since 134 came out, but I have been re-reading the last few chapters while waiting for 135. A few things occurred to me while I read these again, and I had to put it out somewhere, so I am very glad I found the discussion thread! They could be very far-off, but here are my speculations:
I think someone made the observation that the butterfly is Yuuko? That is true, I think, but then what about the boy Haruka is talking about--or is it really just an example? I got the feeling, however, that Haruka is saying something more meaningful than a metaphor. I was thinking, perhaps Watanuki is that boy and he is (or is in) Yuuko's dream.
Watanuki would be, then, like Sakura: in the dream world as a soul with no body. This could have something to do with why he sees "youkai" as well as his wish. Perhaps he can see them because he is, or is like, one of them. Then the fulfillment of his wish would to get a "body," or becoming human, would it not? In this sense, Doumeki would play a key part in that; Watanuki receives part of his eye, his blood, etc, and as Kohane said, they are "merging." But in what way, I wonder? And to what end?
These speculations may have also been influenced by the "bell-client," a girl who didn't know she was a ghost--could Watanuki be like her? More than that, though, and more than Haruka's cryptic words in chapter 133, is chapter 132 that makes me particularly anxious. The world just sort of stops for Watanuki, and Doumeki and Himawari go on without him--absolutely without him. It is as if Watanuki had never been there at all; they aren't wearing the gloves he gave them, and Tanpopo isn't there.
From that point on, there is a strange seamlessness in the following chapters, with one moment scene flowing into the next without rhyme or reason--like a dream. Of course, the scene in 132 might have been some strange overlapping of "worlds," but then Yuuko reaches out to Watanuki, as he stands there. Yuuko says he fainted, but I find that somewhat hard to believe; one moment Watanuki is standing, and the next lying in bed. He is in bed a lot at Yuuko's shop, don't you think? I don't think I have seen his house once (I could be wrong, perhaps it is showed in earlier chapters).
In retrospect, xxxHolic has had the strange transitions between scenes quite often, in my opinion, but I tried not to let it bother me too much. It's really getting to me now, though, especially with the last two chapters. In 133 they are partying, and suddenly he is in a dream? I found that particularly strange.
In a sense, this reminds me of Kingdom Hearts II (spoilers for those who haven't played it, intend to play it, or haven't played it through!) and the parallel Twilight Town. Watanuki would be like Roxas, an incomplete being. Yuuko would be like Ansem, in a sense, creating a parallel "world" (the dream world) to kind of cultivate him in until he becomes whole. I am not the first one who made this observation, but in many ways xxxHolic and Tsubasa are like the KH-verse, what with all the multiple worlds and weird dreams and such.
This all could be, and quite likely is wild speculation all caused by the anxieties that hit me in chapter 132; the idea that Watanuki isn't really a part of Doumeki and Himawari's lives, that he is removable, frightens me. He is annoying as fuck, but I love him to bits! I will probably come to be entirely wrong with all this, but I can see how it might fit into xxxHolic's story.
Hurrah for crazy theories? This has turned out to be absolutely too long, but perhaps someone will read this and give me feedback I don't want to think I am entirely crazy!
