I really want to come up with my own hatsu, just a little scared that I can't come up with something that isn't too overpowered or Mary Sue-ish. C'mon brain, think of a cool Emission ability!

Emission is the hardest one when it comes to making an ability. Mostly because all emitters have the same power, throwing a ball of nen is used so many times. The only completely different power is the warping ability of Leorio and the pirate boxer from Greed Island. Pokkles also has a super awesome emission ability (he shoots arrows), But the sweetest one has to be Franklin's double machine gun, now that is awesome emission right there! Coming up with something different is tough, stick to shooting nen balls to start, just try to find an original way to throw them (slingshot for example). I hope I could help you! ;)

---------- Post added at 05:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:35 PM ----------

Well, this is what i made up.
I'm super picky when it comes to choosing powers, so I change my mind quickly and create a new power every day of the week xD

Nen type: Emission

Name: Blowgun Shotgun

Details: By using a normal pipe, you can shot small dart-shaped nen projectiles at great speed. A full barrage can easily ravage a big rock, but since I'm using a regular blowpipe as a restriction to make it more powerful, a full barrage can ravage pretty much everything in a wide range. Since they are like darts, they cause no impact.

Name: Blowgun Sniper

Details: Again, with the pipe. This time, you focus all your aura in a single compressed shot that pierces about anything. It has a huge range, it's able to pierce everything in its path to a distance of 250m, 300m with the pipe, if there are no obstacles, it gets close to 1km. Like the first ability, it's like a dart, so it causes no impact.

Name: Blowgun Cannon

Details: Like the sniper, you shoot a single shot, but this time, instead of a dart, you use a big nen bullet to cause a great impact and destruction on contact, it doesn't have a very long range.

Given the Hunter x Hunter standards, I think everything is pretty reasonable, but that's up to you to tell me.

Quite reasonable. The weapon is not materialized, right?

Exactly, it's a normal wood blowgun. You're able to shoot without it of course, but it's just like Franklin's fingers, it gives you a power boost, since you're using it as a restriction. Besides, it would be pretty hard for an emitter to materialize something, since materialization is an emitter's weakest point.

So, I guess I'm a Manipulator...?

Type: Manipulation
Name: Shi no Shi (Deadly Four)
Allows to control other people into using yout own list of Hatsus.
First of all, the list of other types' abilities: Emission, Enhacement, Transmutation and Conjuration - is set from the beginning (still working on the list itself). To control any person of those categories, you must explain the ability he will be getting (he must understand that it's really the ability which is made for him, not the one any other person is using) and make him give you something for exchange. It doesn't matter what, but it must be at his own will. Once the conditions are fulfilled, you can fully control the target, without entering his mind and memories tho. The people you control can be controlled anywhere and they will be under your control until you decide to release them.
  • You cannot control other Manipulators and Specialists. If you fulfill the conditions on any of them, you FAIL.
  • You can only control one of each of other types. If you fulfill the conditions on the second one while the first is still under your control, you FAIL. That means you can control only four people at most.
  • However, if you manage to find out the target's Nen type before you finished fulfilling the conditions and stop halfway, the FAIL isn't counted.
  • You cannot use the target's original Hatsu ability, even if you know it. If you try to, you FAIL.
  • You can make him use the Hatsu ability you explained.
  • If your explained ability and his Hatsu type doesn't match, you cannot make him use it. If you try to, you FAIL.
  • On the other hand, that means that you can control people even by explaining the ability they won't be ever able to use, even a non-existent one, if you can make them believe they'll be getting it.
  • If you found out you explained the wrong ability after you are already controlling the target, you can only change it by releasing him and then explaining the right ability. However, if he isn't willing to 'pay' you for it once again, you won't be able to control him. Tho the controlled doesn't remember that he was manipulated.
  • If you force anyone to use the explained Hatsu and they cannot use it because of any other circumstances (f.e. their Nen isn't mastered enough or the ability can't be used because of Restriction), you FAIL.
  • You cannot make him use any of the other Hatsu abilities from your list unless you explained it. If you try to, you FAIL.
  • You cannot promise him to have and explain to him multiple abilities. If you do that, the conditions aren't simply counted as fulfilled.
  • Your list has only one ability of each type. Once you made your target use any of those abilities, you can change this type's ability in your list. But if you choose to, the target won't be able to use neither the one he could, neither the new one; unless you release him and fulfill the conditions once again. Remember not to make too powerful abilities, as the target may not be able to use them.
  • You can control those who can't use Nen, but remember that they still have their types, even if they themselves don't know them. So you must be careful with each of the mentioned above.
  • You can also make controlled people to progress in Nen enough to use your explained Hatsu. If they have potential at all, that is.
  • If you force your target to do anything he isn't able to (except for Hatsu, in which case everything is explained already), he will try his best to complete the task, even if it might kill him. But be careful, because any damage your target receives is applied on both him and you.
  • If you FAIL by any means, all of your targets are released and they remember everything about being controlled.

I've noticed that there are a lot of people claiming materialization hatsus, and base their nen type off their current personality. But a question: if a nen type is something you are born under and your correlating personality has drastically changed from your childhood's, does your mature personality take precedence the same way a Specialist can be born from Conjurers and Manipulators?

When I take the above quiz, I always get Conjuration/Materialization (I care about my dignity, observant for hypocrisy, and am careful to do everything in perfect detail, very quiet), but if I were to take the quiz as a child it would most likely be Transmutation (I cheated at every opportunity, bullied, stole, lied and was very chaotic). I could say that my current Materialization personality was influenced by lessons I've learned from my childhood, but is not my starting type or "inner child".

So if you're upset on what your current type may possibly be, that consideration could help you with your minor predicament.

Materialization, Manipulation, Transmutation - Nanoaccretion
Conjured Object(s): DNA modifiers
Description: This is an out-of-combat ability that has limitless applications, but the time required to train it should be extremely long. It allows you to scan and store DNA sequences and materialize DNA modifiers that follow the basic rules of RNA using your own mind as a template.
Using extremely concentrated En to study specific cell cultures for YEARS with the help of manipulation nen to memorize the long genetic sequence chains, you can materialize a life size copy of your own DNA. Along with a manipulated marker that uses transmutation nen on existing DNA to correct errors from the time of memorization, you have an artificial protein 'RNA' reader/writer made of nen which you can produce.
After you master control over your own DNA sequence, you can begin to study the sequences of others. Comparisons of DNA sequences allow you to perceive and slowly repair mutations and damage or sample the effect of a potential organic poison on your protein synthesis (can you eat it?). Pursuit of self interests include using the DNA sequences of others to change your own, you can become a DNA Hunter.

Actually it doesn't depend on that. Your "birth" Nen is the one formed trough your regular living. With that it means that it's the one that will develop according to your own personality.

But there are cases when something life-changing appears and THAT also affects your Nen which may lead to Specialization IF you're a Conjurer or a Manipulator. Am I explaining it right? If you're a Enhancer with a traumatic event it may lead to specialization but it's more likely to lead to Enhancement again.

Anyway, your Hatus is mainly Manipulation. Which means that to affect others there should be one prerequisite to make it work efficiently.

No, your "birth/major" Nen and your "minor" Nen are to be separate entities - and it seems I'm wrong as well, as it is inherited far beyond just childhood experience.

If you refer to Chapter 60, Page 4-5 (I don't know of if off-site links are allowed, no HxH on laptop), Wing explains that your major nen is the one that you are naturally born with. For Gon's example, he implies that Gon's naturally-efficient body type aligns him with Reinforcement, a more comprehensive interpretation of this is that his "major" aura has attuned the way in which his body would develop (not sure if this applies to the mind as well). Since Reinforcement can either slide in the direction of Emission or Transmutation or stay at Reinforcement, the direction of your "minor" is determined by your life experiences.

So nobody is born with "blank slate" nen which eventually develops into one of the five categories, Specialization withstanding this assertion. Extremes are not necessary to change the way in which one's aura type would develop, although I do imagine that Specialization changes really would require something dramatic.

As for my prerequisite, just body contact would suffice - I think. It would still take time depending on the number of cells that are to be changed.

Major Nen and Minor Nen? Where did you get that? o_O

And I think the condition is not sufficient, but it's just me. Altering someone entirely is different than just controlling its movement, so I guess it needs a bigger condition. Even Kuroro hasn't that kind of power (He steals an ability, but doesn't change someone...) Illumi to do so has a limited amount of needles.

It's easier to label them as major and minor nen for the sake of my explanation. If you were born an Emitter, that would be like a "major" and your "minor" is either ONE of your neighboring types which you may have similar efficiency in learning, like Reinforcement or Manipulation. If your living experiences have made you inclined to be Emission/Manipulation, you will likely have less ability to become Emission/Reinforcement and vice versa. Suffice it to say, according to Wing, you are indeed born into a certain category that deviates to one side or another - in Gon's case, stood close to 100% Reinforcement.

As for necessities, it would need collected DNA samples and transmit aura to materialize the RNA-object(s). This nen requires large amount of precision/aura to interpret and memorize DNA chains before doing any invasive procedure with pre-programmed RNA-objects, but to permanently change someone else shouldn't be less complicated than transmitting aura - see Zazan's example for 'Queen Shot' or Pakunoda's injection of 'Memory Bullets'. The ability makes small physical changes that require concentration to produce large results over a long time, rather than an intense aura to impose personal willpower like Kuroro or Illumi.

That DNA nen, has to be the coolest. So, you only have manipulatory control over your own DNA correct. I feel like looking into another persons cells and their DNA would take a boatload of concentration, and not really possibly in a fight, so its more of a doctor nen. And the idea of a DNA hunter is so cool, searching the world to find the best genes.

hatsu: transformation
name: ?
details: you can transform the aura around your fingernails to have certain characteristics depending on what color nail polish is on them
green: acidic
red: fire
blue: ice
grey: metal
etc..

The Nen type changing was said to be a very rare process. So it seems that personality doesn't change as drastically as it might seem for us.

I didn't really think too much about what my Nen type would be. Most of the tests gave me Manipulation, with Specialist being the second most. But I wanted to do Conjuration - I always loved creating things, so if I could choose one, Conjuration would be it, even if I might not perfectly fit the personality profile of a Conjurer. And I plan on making more of these Hatsu - just cause it's fun - and I probably won't be adhering to any template of what my own Nen type might be. I'm just doing it cause it's cool to come up with Nen abilities, and its a fun creative challenge. So even though this specific ability is Conjuration type, it might not necessarily be an ability that I myself would choose to have if I lived in the Hunter world. It is just something I came up with.

I hope something similar hasn't already been thought up.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Name: Recorder

Type: Conjuration

Explanation:
Conjures a cassette tape, a tape recorder and a pair of headphones. The headphones are large, over-the-ear type - due to their size, one might even assume they are noise canceling, but anyone wearing them can hear everything around them perfectly fine - there is no increase or loss of hearing - they hear as if they have nothing over their ears. The recorder is small and has only three buttons on it - record, play, and stop.

The cassette tape in the recorder can be taken out - you can put another cassette tape in and use the recorder as a traditional cassette player, but the special Nen-conjured tape is needed for the ability to work. Likewise, the headphones can be unplugged from the tape recorder and used on any traditional device just fine (and in such cases, the headphones are noise-canceling, and have optimal sound quality - a real high-end product). And any traditional pair of headphones can be plugged into the tape recorder, if you want to use it to listen to music. But all three Nen-conjured items must be used and connected in order for their effects to work.

Effects:
When all three Nen-conjured objects are used, and the headphones are fitted over someone's ears, pressing "record" will record all all the events that take place while the tape is recording, from the point of view of whoever is wearing the headphones - if no one is wearing the headphones, nothing is recorded.

Once you press "stop", that person - whoever was wearing the headphones - loses all memories of what happened while the tape was recording. However, when they have the headphones on and press "play" they will remember in complete and perfect detail what happened during that time. But, again, when they press "stop", or take off the headphones, they will forget those memories completely.

In both cases, taking off the headphones functions as if the person pressed "stop". The tape will stop recording or playing when the person takes off the headphones.

Further, if they put the headphones on another individual, and press play, that person will too be able to "remember", in just as much detail, the events that were recorded, from the point of view of the person who recorded it. Unlike the person who recorded it, however, other listeners will be able to remember those events after pressing "stop" or taking off the headphones, though they will no longer remember in perfect and complete detail, as the memories will begin to fade naturally. If the memory fades, however, they can simply "re-listen" to the recording to remember it anew.

Only the person who recorded the memory will be subjected to the memory loss.

Anyone can record something on the headphones. However, as there is only one cassette tape, only two "memories" can be recorded - one on side A, and one on side B. And each side can only record a memory up to the maximum length of 23 minutes. And only one memory can be recorded on each side. So if a 23 minute memory is recorded on Side A, and then someone records a 3 minute memory over it, the earlier (23 minute long) memory will be completely erased.

If a memory is taped over, the person whose memory it is will NOT regain the memory - and lacking the recording of it, they lose any ability of regaining it (aside from being told it by others who had "listened" to the recording). The tape recorder literally captures the memory of the event, in lieu of their brain doing so.

Interesting. Although I don't see its utility to be honest.
And LOL, the ability's effects are quite Manipulation type ones :P

Is it? how so?

It could be used very well for conveying information to another person. I could literally put them in my shoes during that prior event. And, despite its side-effect of memory loss, it can be used very well for remembering an important event. I could record an event, and then just keep the headphones on and the tape recorder on play, and thus retain perfect, photographic memory of that 23 minute period. I could reserve one side of the cassette tape for this purpose, to retain a single memory, perfectly, for long periods of time, and use side B more liberally.

You put many limitations and not that many great things come out. See Pakunoda. She can do exactly the same by touch and then transplant memories by shooting them.
Your ability, while interesting, is inferior than it. A frightening ability that Pakunoda has, of course, but you could go a bit more further to take more advantages.

...Maybe Re-writing a memory.

While that is true, Pakunoda is a Specialization type. In my intro, though I mentioned my preference for Conjuration over Manipulation, what I didn't mention is that I am specifically trying to avoid Specialization type, as creating a Specialization type Hatsu gives too much creative freedom and takes the challenge out of the creative process. This is fun because it forces you to work within the limitations of the well defined categories of each Nen-type. I noticed it as soon as Specialization was introduced and defined in the manga - it's a cop out. Not that this is an insult to Togashi - he is a brilliant writer in my opinion. In fact, his introduction of the Specialization type was the first signal to me that he is a brilliant writer - for it is a brilliant cop-out from a storytelling perspective. He introduces the five standard Nen-types, each well defined and limiting, creating a very technical and scientific magic system, and then he introduces the unique Specialization type, which completely breaks those borders and limitations, allowing the possibility for him to introduce absolutely any piece of magic into the universe without it contradicting with the system - it allows him to have this technical system of magic, which is great for defining a unique world and immersing the reader in it, but it also doesn't put any limitations on him as a story teller - he won't have to scrap a great story thread because the magic "doesn't follow the rules of the world". He defines the rules, and then gives himself a way to bypass them, in case the story calls for it! A brilliant story telling device! But I'm not telling a story right now. I'm just straining my creativity against a limitation - and using a Specialization type Hatsu takes away that limitation. So I won't use it.

Pakunoda's gun could still work as a Conjuration type ability, but what is the drawback? What are the conditions that allow this power to be so efficient? That too destroys the creative limitation. I don't want to make something like Pakunoda's ability - I want to make a frightening ability, but if I make an ability that is frightening in its effectiveness, I want to have earned it through creative thought. An ability like hers would be too easy to come up with.

I guess one way I could augment the Recorder ability, while still keeping its in bounds, would be if the tape recorder functioned not as a memory device, but as an actual recorder. Like sonar, the recorder, through very precise sound pickup, actually records, not just a memory of the event through a certain person's eyes, but the event itself - the landscape, the people involved, even if the person with the recorder didn't notice or look at or pay attention to a certain detail, the recorder picks up everything. And the person who listens to it is transported back to that event - by listening to it - and can actually move within this sonically reconstructed environment, seeing details that the original person missed, or that they themselves might have missed on first look, peeking around corners, even walking off in directions a fair distance away from where the person with the recorder actually was. I'd have to define a range for the recorder - perhaps a 50 m radius, not taking into account the inability of soundwaves to travel through certain objects, of course.

Still only two "events" would be able to be recorded, but they wouldn't be connected with memory, so the original recorder would face no memory loss of the event, and anyone could go back and re-investigate that area. No drawback, and of greater use, as it is not capturing a "memory", but an actual place and time, in its whole. It would be any detective's dream.

A common mistake is to assume that Specialization school is hax. It's not. Nor it's a bypass or a way to skip some things. It's simply a school in which some effects can't be classified in. That's why Conjuration and Manipulation has the chance to ends being Specialization. Because they usually have secondary effects that leads trough it.
As a school, It has limitations: The ones that the user itself has. As every other school. It doesn't actually depends on the school, but the user. Let's see...
Compare two reinforcement guys as Phinks and Uvogin. Which one is stronger? Why one needs to do a twist on his arm to increase his strength? To close the gap. But it's not due the school, it's due him.
And then we have Kurotopi, able to copy (Love Togashi puns, btw) everything which is HAX. And every copy has En. SUPER HAX. Of course, there are limitations. But those doesn't depend on the school. It's the limitation of Kurotopi.

It all depends on your power, not your school. Here I'm always thinking that you're on your max: Level Zeno-Netero of training or close to fully develop your technique.

PS: Side note what Paku conjures is the bullets, not the gun.

Oh no, I am not saying that Specialization abilities are all hax - the only person in Hunter x Hunter who is hax is Meruem :^_^ - it is simply that there are no inherent limitations on Specialization abilities. Limitations are purely character to character - there are limitations on each specific ability. What I am talking about is that the type of abilities available are limitless. A person could think of absolutely anything and it would fit within the definition of a Specialization ability, because that definition is: boundless. For instance, Pakunoda's ability to read minds of anyone she touches. This is not so for any other of the five types - each type is limited in that there are certain things that it just cannot do. My opposition to Specialization type Hatsu is purely creative, and is not an opposition to how Specialization abilities fit within the power structure of the series.

Also, when I talk about an ability like Pakunoda's being easy to come up with, I am referring specifically to her ability to read minds - its an easy power. The translating memories by shooting is less so, though even that is without any drawback other than the fact that it is unlethal - though, when combined with her mind reading and her ability to erase people's memories by shooting them with their own memories, it has incredible combat potential, capable of disabling or deeply psychologically scaring an opponent (make them forget their training, make them forget why they are fighting, make them forget the first half of the battle, make them forget their family) - at least to me, there is too little limitation on her ability - there is never any condition she must meet, never any moment in which she would be unable to use her power, or any moment in which it would be disadvantage her to use her power. But this is something I have against her power in general, and, like you said, the lack of ability specific limitations and conditions. It has nothing to do with the lack of limitation on Specialization abilities. People like Chrollo and Neon have extensive conditions and limitations on their ability.

I wasn't thinking about the abilities on Netero level - I was going at it from a "hey Mom, I just developed my first Hatsu!" level. With my next one I'll aim higher.
