The art is full of luscious detail that has been meticulously researched (Mori actually has been known to hire consultants to make sure her art and backgrounds are accurate). Her fine lines and carefully drafted panels gives a firm sense of the time and place. The characters are attractive and lively, and as always, Mori finds a way to sneak in drawings of beautiful naked women. In Otoyome Gartari, the vast open vistas of the steppes seems to inspire a very cinematic feel to the manga, with hunt scenes that stretch out for pages, yet are a full of energy, great camera angles and intensity.
As is typical, the main character is a bright young woman, extremely competent and burdened by gender roles. In this case, Amira is sent to be married into a distant clan, yet she is very old to be a bride by the standard of the day. We don't have an explanation as to why this is, but it is sure to be a pivotal part of her character.
Otoyome Gatari promises to be just an compelling and full of drama as Emma was. Somehow the artist manages to focus on tiny details in the story, make them compelling, and then charges into high drama.
I highly recommend anything Kaoru Mori does. Permalink " "
