Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

Weird, my manga says there are 173 fighters in the Tower. Which one is right?

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

I agree with him. Mostly because Nen is based on the very basis of personality and individuality therefore it should be extremely difficult to see two identical techniques.
They were warrior, yes, but a whole tribe using Nen seems a bit too far.

It's like saying that everyone on the Boronenolf tribe have his technique as well since they all were musicians. IMHO.
I am not too sure about that... If I recall, specialization nen are techniques which do not fit into any other category. From the explanation given in the manga such nen arises from circumstances, GENETICS(or maybe the word was hereditary), environment and so on.... If kurapica's emperor time is related to his red eyes then there is a strong chance the technique itself is genetic. Kurapica never even made the technique, he had it all along with his nen. I guess it is a viable scenario that each member of the kurata clan had individual techniques however there is also a chance that they were all capable of the same emperor time.

Could be, could be not. Where you read that part of genetics, kkck? I'm lost there.

I'll answer in kkck's place. It was when Kurapica succesfully captured Uvo with his chain jail, in the flashback his Master explained it to him. There he mentioned that Specialization user are most likely from either Materialization or Manipulation who can develop it due to their environment, bloodline etc. Here is the corresponding page. :D

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

Hmmm...
I just read this interesting article, and it answers a lot of question regarding the similarities between Naruto and Hunter x Hunter, but that's not what I want to talk about in this post.

But anyway, at the end of the article, it says that the X in the title is actually not pronounced at all..
Meaning that we are supposed to call it "Hunter Hunter".

Did you guys knew that?
I've been calling it Hunter X Hunter (Hunter ecks Hunter) since the beginning!

Yes, the X isn't pronounced. Is just "hunter hunter". Or "janta-janta" as they call it in Japan lol

You could hear the original pronounce back in the old anime's call to next episode part, as far as I remember.

Well, that's just one possibility. Specialization Nen can come from everywhere. But the most important part in Nen building is determination. And when Kurapica's eyes turn red, he's boiling of anger, which allows him Emperor Time.
Just imagine, all of Kurapica's tribe could use Emperor Time. First, Kurapica would have know about Nen from the beginning and probably been able to use it. Second, if all his brethren could use every Hatsu to 100%, they probably wouldn't have been entirely killed by the spiders, possibly not even have lost against them.

And even if this Specialzation is inherited, it doesn't need to be occur on all tribe members - like Neon's dad can't tell the future, or no other Zaoldyeck can grant wishes like Alluka can (if her ability is Nen based).

And finally from a transcendet point of view, Togashi is way to good a writer to create a whole tribe with exactly the same over-the-top super human ability, which Specialization certanly is compared to the other Hatsu types and Emperor Time is compared to anything else.

I still call it Hunter ECKS Hunter :D

Ho boy, I gotta admit, occasionally I call it Hunter Ecks Hunter, but I've mostly curbed that problem and scold my friend for calling it that still. :p

Me too.
I would question how determination has an effect on specialization nen, specially in kurapica's case. Determination has an effect when developing nen, that much is unquestionably true but how would that apply in any form to kurapica? It would apply to his nen jail because he actually made the technique from scratch however as I mentioned before he did not actually develop his specialization nen. As we saw with the test he merely discovered he had it almost by accident.

I do think we have indications that a decent number of people in kurapica's tribe are indeed nen users. Uvogin made it pretty clear that they were strong and he had trouble with them (when he actually remembered them). Is it plausible for anyone or anything to give a remarkably high leveled nen user trouble in a fight without nen? I honestly doubt it. IMO the more reasonable assumption is that they were pretty damn strong nen users to explain why the ryodan would have had trouble with them than any vaguely plausible alternative.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

Of course it's a plausible presumption that Emperor Time is inherited in Kurapica's tribe. But as long as we don't have any hint in this direction, we have to work on the assumption, that this ability comes from Kurapica's hate and determination. Yes, determination. Any Nen/Hatsu is influenced by determination except for the Specialization Hatsu people are born with, like Neon or Alluka.
But first, we don't know, whether all Specialization manifests itself from the moment of birth. For example, Chrolo's Skill Hunter is quite hedged for being an ability, someone could be born with.
Second, Kurapica didn't know anything about Nen at the beginning of Hunter X Hunter. So it's quite unlikely, that he is blessed with one of the most powerful Nen abilities existing without being able to use his Nen.

I do think we have indications that a decent number of people in kurapica's tribe are indeed nen users. [...] IMO the more reasonable assumption is that they were pretty damn strong nen users to explain why the ryodan would have had trouble with them than any vaguely plausible alternative.
Obviously, there were several Nen users (even masters?) among the Kurtas. But a tribe usually doesn't consist of just some people but of several dozens. So saying, all Kurtas have Nen and even more Emperor Time, is plainly unreasonabe.
On the one hand, the Spider wouldn't have won at all. On the other hand, if Nen and Emperor Time is so much embedded in the culture and life of Kurapica's tribe, he would have known about it from the beginning.

So I don't say you're wrong, but as long as we talk about a manga, where we actually can't conclude anything, we have to abide by Ockham's law of parsimony.

@Foreva below: This is even better, thank you! Having access to the databook is surely handy.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

Sorry to jump in your conversation but the Databook explicitly states that Kurapika's Emperor Time is not a bloodline trait.
Databook said:
Specialization is made up of rare Nen users who do not belong to the other five categories. In most cases, Specialists either came from Specialization bloodlines or had their abilities awakened by the special environments they grew up in. It is extremely difficult to develop a Specialization ability on one's own. However, some people like Kurapika were able to become Specialists later in life thanks to training.

I'd like to point out an oddity during the invasion portion of NGL, in this page Killua acknowledges Zeno's Dragondrive as his Grandfathers technique and seems to be familiar with it. How is that? Prior to Celestial tower when Killua lived at home he didn't know about Nen. After that he's with Gon basically the entire time from Celestial tower, to Gon's home to Yorkshin, Greed island and NGL. How would he know about any of Zeno or Silva's nen abilities? Unless of course he talked with Milluki about it over the phone or simply felt his Grandfathers aura. Even then, how would he know about this attack. I just found this to be a tiny plot hole, unless someone can fill me in on how its not.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

Now that you mention it, TheAmericandream, I thought the same, when I read this page the first time.

The only explanation for me is, that Killua did know about Nen, as the said to Wing, but did not know any details. So maybe he knew what can be done by Nen, seeing his family using it, but not knowing about Nen itself. But that's just my paltry try to explain it, it is just a plot hole.

I have been wondering about something for a very long time and finally decided not to be lazy to ask around. Why wasn't Killua train in the ways of nen from young?

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

It's why I thought He was Emission all this time, if you ask me. Maybe those Dragons are visible therefore his grandpa is able to materialize them. But yes, there is many plotholes regarding Nen. Even if the system is perfect, until Togashi arrived to the final concept He made some mistakes in the introducing arcs.
