Re: Claymore Hang-out Thread

Watch the others! That's the most ridiculous one! I liked the first the best and the second is the famous one where the aesthetic really comes into its own.

FMA was superb. I don't own it (I will someday, I swear) but the only thing ahead of it on my 'to buy' list is Claymore. Have you read Silver Spoon? It's different, but it's one of the most emotionally honest manga I've ever read and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Also, if those are the kinds of numbers FMA had then Claymore doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting a new anime (sorry guys).

I did read that thread. That's the one where all your arguments reduce to "this offends my sense of how the world works" you guys seem to spend more time arguing about whether or not the events in the story made sense than you do arguing about Miria :P Also, like, I don't want to rehash that thread (I'm more interested in character analysis than 'x doesn't make sense because y' type arguments), but I would like to say this: the way I see it, the best plan is the simplest one that works. To me, Miria's straightforward approach to strategy shows that she avoids unnecessary complexity, not that she's lacking in creativity. If you don't think her plans should have worked, fair enough, but I would say that that's an argument about the plausibility of Yagi's storytelling decisions and not about Miria's tactical skill.

Why do I like Miria? Easy: she's a good person who does everything in her power to make the world a better place, she's smart and nice, I want her moral compass, and I have a soft spot for stories about marginalised people who stand up and claim their humanity and their freedom. I think the question you meant to ask was "why do you find a Miria compelling character?" which I'd be happy to answer :) It may take me some time to get my thoughts in order, though, so bear with me.

If I'm to summarise that thread + your concluding paragraph would it be fair to say you don't like Miria because you feel her character is excessively 'good', she's not convincingly clever, and the respect the other warriors show her isn't believable. I'll go out on a limb here and summarise that as "you don't find her character convincing" if that's OK with you.

And, um, like, this is a bit silly but I have to ask: was your resentment of Miria ever at any point rooted in a sense that her plotline was taking screentime and fandom attention away from Clare and Teresa? I'm asking this because last time I intensely disliked a fictional character it was because I felt they were distracting from what I saw as the true story. I built up an elaborate plot and character based case against them but the heart of my dislike was actually fear that what I cared about was being neglected. I daresay you're wiser than I was when I was 18 (and probably more sensible about not losing your shit over shonen manga, too) but if something like this is going on then you're almost certainly distorting your perspective in ways that get in the way of appreciating something you love. Take it from someone who's been there :P

Nope, she started to annoy me ever since the time skip. Although the fact that she didn't die after foolishly attacking HQ alone annoyed me significantly. Her resurrection was so ridiculous that I got a headache from all the facepalming. In a way it shouldn't impact my view of Miria since that was more of a plot flaw than character flaw but it did. But later, when she was fighting Hysteria and came up with her "brilliant" plan it didn't help me like her character either.

I would discuss Miria more extensively but she's an insignificant character fro my POV so I'll stop here. Maybe when the manga ends I'll elaborate on my views on her a bit more.

On a different topic, Kiseijuu anime is coming out soon and the manga is with Gernot's seal of approval so I assume it will be good. From what he had told me and from what I've read it is similar to Claymore with the whole parasite theme.

As someone who's been the member of the community since way before it moved to mangahelpers, I was "lucky" enough to read Goral's posts for a while. And I can tell you, the reason Goral hates Miria so much is because she survived the attack on the organization and he seems to believe that only good stories are those that pile up corpses of good guys. So yeah, that's pretty much it. Of course haters don't really need a good reason to hate a character.

OoOhhh!
So that´s what "Parasyte" is called...
I like that one as well... and regarding the similarities to claymore?
From my standpoint, "Parasyte" is essentially a story (if using claymore terms) where the yoma have the main role regarding the whole parasite theme involved, only with the shapeshifting powers of awakened beings at their disposal and no crossbreeding like the claymores are involved anywhere...
Only yoma.
Which actually makes it quite interesting since how many here haven´t wondered what the life of a yoma would be like from their perspective? Since I´m really certain that there´s zero fanfics taking up that topic within the claymore fandom...
Either way, looking forward to "Parasyte"... and "Fate stay night"...
:)

Oh, and about Silver Spoon, I'm up to date with newest chapters and have all (5) volumes that have come out in Polish (I intend to buy the whole thing). Sadly though Arakawa will have to slow down now because of her family member's health declining. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...poon-arakawa-slows-manga-serialization/.77222

@Nanozom
I don't like Type Moon franchise and I doubt new Fate Stay Night will change my mind. But I look forward to Kiseijuu, Terra Formars and most of all Ronia. This is going to be a good season.

Nah, the "Fate/ Stay Night" was a personal thing that I am looking forward to, I am not telling anyone else to look forward to it as well as it´s all about tastes.
Isn´t every season a good season?

Re: Claymore Hang-out Thread

Well, in this season only Barakamon picked my interest (and I've been watching Haikyuu and Slow Steps since the last one) and often I don't even watch 1 new series. Usually I prefer to watch something old school or something that has withstood the test of time.

What kind of requirements is involved there?
(Curious.)
Are these classified as "Classics"?

Most anime from this list: http://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=18611 + the ones that are still highly recommended by trustworthy people (like Kemono no Souja Erin anime or Uchuu Kyoudai or...)

I would say 'their personality and story exceed the limits of my suspension of disbelief' is a perfectly valid subjective argument. Different people see things differently.

1. YAY people are reading Spoon ^^ I got into it about two months before I read Claymore and, well, it's message of staying open to opportunity and accepting that it's OK to not know where your life is going was kind of exactly what I needed at that point in my life.
2. Oh no :( I'm so sorry to hear that a loved one of hers is sick. I'd noticed the slow-down but had no idea it was due to something so serious.

My policy towards anime is that I bring to all other fiction: Sturgeon's Law is a thing so confine your viewing to trusted sources (friends, authors, and longevity). The issue with this, though, is that it means I'm usually the last person to get into something :P

I remember the animesuki days and I can attest that many people in the fandom at the time were all over this. The massacre on Pieta was probably one of the biggest moments in the series in terms of sudden impact and how characters that just became proeminent were being one shotted at the time. When we reached that part in the anime the board reaction was quite similar and impacted; ever since then we had the timeskip and the series turn of events rarely if ever brought that imminent sense of danger that we found early in the series back in the days, no matter how dire the situation that our characters put themselves in.

I think some people just want to get that feeling you get when you see something of impact and the manga and anime media can be very successful at providing it. I have this theory that many manga and anime fans are emotional masochists.

Look at this funny overraction video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XH75KB5fBEQ

"this video just proves that blood, gore, killing, torture, ... is just another kind of fanservice"

I agree with that. I think some people really like seeing impactful and traumatizing things in fiction; or watch some series just so at the end, they can get a dark and open ending instead of the usual happy ones.

Can't say I don't enjoy some of that as well, to some extent. Like Griffith would say face to face with the Idea of Evil: "It's true. I can feel that darkness within myself."

"Well I love you guys from 104th squad... I really do... but you all need to die in the end so I can get my feels." :derp

BTW, has anyone of you ever dreamed about Claymore? It's the only manga/anime I've ever dreamed about (AFAIR) which says something. It was a few years ago though.

Depends... what was the dream about?

(in my case, it was transforming into an awakened being in a modern city... oh the body horror... and then hunted down by the ghosts... Not the most pleasant nightmares I admit...)

I only vaguely remember it but I know that Riful and Teresa were in that dream and I think I was just reading a Claymore chapter.

Re: Claymore Hang-out Thread

I had a sort of Claymore cameo in my dream once, if you want to call it that. Just skipping to the part where it happened: I was surrounded by thousands of lethal insects, but was strangely calm. They started covering me. Next thing I knew, they were all chopped to bits, and I looked like awakened Alicia.

Ever since then, I remember that dream whenever I see her awakened form.

I must admit, I woke up feeling like a total badass.

Re: Claymore Hang-out Thread

I've had three: in the first, there were a bunch of warriors riding on a bus; in the second some were visiting my old high school, I showed them around, and then I had a job interview with the Organisation (I woke up before I learnt if they'd offered me the position); and I don't remember the details of the third.

I can see that. The loss of friends from the beginning through Pieta certainly was a big impact on me. This isnt really seen afterwards as much. And yeah you just don't get the same sense of danger. Well maybe in a few spots but not as much. Our main characters kinda went from really struggling, thinking they were all strong but finding out they lacked so much and nearly getting killed each battle, to basically being kick ass powerful after the time skip. I liked the new found strength and kick-ass-ness but after a while of escalating battles it just seemed like I loss that sense of direness and struggle found in the earlier ones. There were a few towards the end that brought that back though... I for one was preparing to loose another main character when Miria fought Hysteria. I instantly thought back to what happened when Teresa lost both arms (well hands, but same effect).

BTW, has anyone of you ever dreamed about Claymore? It's the only manga/anime I've ever dreamed about (AFAIR) which says something. It was a few years ago though.
It seems like I had a Claymore inspired dream once but can't remember the details. What I can recall more clearly was quite the opposite. Claymore prevented me from having many dreams... The very first day I watched about half the animé I was so wound up about it in my head I barely slept for the next 3 days... like an hour of sleep each night. And a couple of the soundtracks would play over and over in my head. Those were a few rough days at work sitting in a chair for 12 hours straight. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything :^_^
