I believe you can find quite a few examples where something had average or mediocre early chapters, that still managed to survive.

During Black Clover launch round, most ppl predicted that, assuming any of the 4 series survived, it would be either Cyborg Roggy or Ultra Battle Satellite. While Black Clover was the obvious series that was going to be axed. But here we are now.

Plenty of that started off as “nothing special”, such as Kimetsu No Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen, and We Never Learn, that were predicted to be clear axes, but now they’re staples in the magazine.

A lot of examples where series were positively received for the most part, And didn’t make it. Shuudan, Double Arts, UBS, School Judgement, Noah’s Notes, etc.

There are tons of petty reasoning why some series can possibly fail, that has no direct correlation to the quality of the series.
Such as The Cover not interesting people so they never read it. Readers skim through it and don’t bother to read it because of a personal artstyle preference. People just not reading because they simply don’t feel like it.

Point is/TLDR I think most series don’t lean too far on either the “this is trash” or “this is amazing” said. Once in a blue moon we’ll get something that’s amazing out the gate, or hot garbage right out the gate.
Well, I technically agree on the point of nothing being a hit in terms of hard quality...to a degree. But, if you look hard enough, the reasons things succeed or die tend to expose themselves.

Anyway, this is something someone brought up on discord, the rough statistics for how many mentions certain series get on twitter every week. Here's what they shared:

CSM 4567
AA 1882
Yuuna 470
S8 216
Saiyuki 113
BC 62
Yui 61
Taisei 26
TSS 17

Danganronpa was written by the creator of shonen magazine???? Wut
No, Kodaka wrote a manga in Shonen Magazine. He already wrote a manga before on Bessatsu Shonen Magazine which was a Danganronpa spin-off so he worked with Kodansha before.

Didn't check this forum properly for 3 weeks, came back and still see the same things being discussed. I guess the forum feels familiar and that's a good thing? <_>
- S8 is fine. If ANYONE can get a free pass for one to two years at the very least, it'll be Kishi. Stop comparing S8 to RxL. Both are very different solely because of the mangaka.
- KnY is still killing it I see. Super happy with how it has been doing.

I'm just following 3-4 manga right now.

- NNT: the final battle against The Demon King is a bit of a letdown but the story so far was interesting and pretty cool.
I can't miss its ending.

- Boruto: the last 10 chapters were amazing and full of hype. They put so many cool secrets about the Otsutsuki Clan and Kaguya...really cool. Hope the battle between Jigen and Naruto/Konoha is gonna be the best of the series, so far.

- OPM: just for the battles.

- Samurai 8: the most interesting of the new series and, imo, even more interesting and lit than some of the old ones. Like it's completely on another level. From chapter 7 it got hugely better and better, with some cool surprises each one...Ata is one of the coolest and op villains i've seen in years.

I was also reading OP but...it bored me. I think i'll return to read it once they'll reach the final battle of Wano...

What advice would you give newbies entering Jump? In terms of creating a hit.

Explanation from Gotou book about why Mazinger Z is (together Shaman King) the only "banned" manga from Jump:

I know is in french (book is in french). Trying to understand it, Go Nagai was in every major magazine, which was not-ethical according to the Shonen Jump editorial. So no exclusive sign, and Nagai left Jump.
I know I'm kinda late here, but that's not what it says. It says that he was publishing in four different magazines and this was incompatible with Jump's exclusivity contract, so he became an exception as an author who was never exclusivily tied to Jump.

It doesn't say anything about him leaving or being banned (not in this part, at least). If anything, it sounds as if Jump was making an exception and allowing him to work for them without signing an exclusivity contract.

Oh thanks. Still sounded Like Gotou was pissed with Nagai or is just me?

If Chagecha can get cancelled after 8 weeks when it was from an author with a huge hit under his belt, then truly no-one is safe, even before a volume is out.
Chagecha is something
the legend say that after chapter 8 Jump told Yoshio Sawai to wrap up the story in a couple of chapters because they're axing it and he just stopped working on it and refused to continue it any further forcing them to axe it with only 8 chapters

What advice would you give newbies entering Jump? In terms of creating a hit.
"there are 2 type of mangakas, geniuses who write whatever they want and the calculating ones who figure out what they need to create to be successful"

The other legend is that the series was so badly/poorly received, that the author decided to stop working on it, before even Jump told him it will be axed.

Ride with what's trendy in the era and expand your premise ( now with demons / exorcism genre).

stand out to keep your readers uniquely interested. At the time when these manga started

Fist of the north star & dragonball (80's)

Dragonball z, One piece & yu-gi-oh (90's)

Assaination classroom & food wars ( early 2010's)

The promised Neverland / Dr.stone (late 2010's now)

or make an manga that is easy to eat till you make it, to turn your plotstory 360 ( my hero academia and black clover for example.

Further else it all depends on if you are lucky enough that the readers finds you interesting.

Also planning matters alot, sometimes people in jump also doing math on what can hit or not

Oh thanks. Still sounded Like Gotou was pissed with Nagai or is just me?
He doesn't sound pissed to me... if anything, he seems impressed.

"At the time, Go Nagai was simultaneously publishing four titles in weekly magazines: Mazinger Z in Shonen Jump, Devilman in Shonen Magazine, Animaru kedaman in Shonen Sunday, Abashiri ikka (The family Abashiri) in Shonen Champion. And a bit before that, he was even doing five. Go Nagai must have possessed an insatiable desire to create to reach such a level of productivity, a hunger to conceive that was totally incompatible with the exclusivity contract defended by Shonen Jump. So it goes without saying that he became an exception to the rule and never became an author exclusivily tied to Shonen Jump."

Is a pity the Gotou book ended in 1993. I really hope the french editorial releases a second 1994-2018 Jump history book.

Some very key things:
-Ring ni Kakero was What shaped Jump action manga basis, based on both Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daisho and Astro Kyudan
-Kinnikuman and then Fist of the North Star were really big, decisive hits that made Jump the Number 1 Magazine

Wow, and he was a veteran? The readerbase of Jump must've really changed a fair deal if Sawai was so brutally rejected like he was. I know that outlandish gag manga as a topic was already sharply declining at that point, but sheesh.

Boruto manga is not canon...? Well i don't care. I'm really enjoying it and that's the only important thing.

I know NNT is not Jump.
Tbh I also find poor your list. Only 4 titles and only 1 is really from Weekly Shonen Jump. What about Hero Academia, Kimetsu, Neverland, Black Clover, or Dr. Stone?
