I wonder guys after all that tall about sales., how do authors get their salaries devived?. I mean as oda, he is swimming in money. But for someone like yuuna, he must getting average?. How much do newby authors gets when their manga are axed
Bits and pieces of info I’ve heard over the years, others probably know more:
I’m pretty sure it’s been mentioned that 100k in print per year (across all volumes) is about equal to the average salary man’s wage. So stuff like Yuuna, and even HZ are quite a bit beyond that, releasing at least 4 volumes per year, and even HZ at the end was probably getting at least 50k in print each volume. But taking into account assistant costs, material costs, and in many cases studio costs once a series is established, the lower sellers probably aren’t too well off. They do also get paid per page drawn each week, and I believe that scales with popularity. Not to mention merchandise royalties if their series has any of that.
I know in the case of other magazines that if a series is a low seller but performs well in rankings, so its allowed to continue, it’s not uncommon for the mangaka to be in the red with effectively no way out.
Also pretty sure Jump has a system in place to financially support mangaka who aren’t serialised, hence why we can get authors that can have 5 years between failed series and make the best part of nothing in 10 years. Obviously it wouldn’t be a lot, and most of those without any success would probably need some other form of income. Unsure of the criteria that makes them eligible for support, but I’m sure someone else knows more about it.
