Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

Actually it doesnt bother me, if there comes a sentence like he needs all his concentration and power to do that haki things and cant use the gears while doing it, it would be ok. Otherwise i must ask the question... why doesnt he goes into gears and just obliterate Kaidou.

Also remember, Rayleigh wasnt satisfied with the gears, since luffy ran out of haki too quick, now with this mastery, he actually doesnt need the gears anymore. Which makes for less fun fights, but is kinda consistent in his development.

His g4 should still be a boost to his AP and Durability though. So he’s not even at his full power right now and fighting equal to a hybrid kaido. So logically the manga is implying g4 luffy > kaido as g4 luffy > luffy and luffy = kaido.

Like ok we all know at the end of the kaido flashback, which will be about kaido wanting to free the world and bring down the government. And how he wanted to find someone stronger to fight. At the end of it will see g4/g5 luffy. Which will end the fight with kaido being dominated.

Does it bother anyone else that Luffy is close to Kaido's level WITHOUT the use of Gear 4 or even Gear 2. It seems BASE Luffy is able to block, dodge, and harm Kaido. I don't care that Luffy finally got the hang of ACoC, it still is way too early for a novice to be able to keep up with a veteran like Kaido in Luffy's base form, especially since we see Kaido is in his Hybrid form.

I would totally understand if he was in Gear 4 using ACOC and able to keep up with Hybrid Kaido, but in base??? To me it is ridiculous that he was able to make such a HUGE leap from being OHKO in G4 effortlessly by Kaido, to now being nearly on par in his base form versus Kaido's hybrid form. Yeah Oda screwed that up just like every other matchup in Onigashima with the power levels.
Yea, the powerscaling is dead in this arc. The raid is filled with inconsistencies and BS.

Regarding advanced conqueror's :
Zoro's fight showed us an accurate depiction of what advanced conqueror's haki means in a fight - a considerable boost to attack power and a moderate boost to defense/CQC. Every other stat stays the same.
Advanced conqueror's does not boost physical strength, speed, reaction speed, durability etc

Kaido was blitzing G4 Luffy in his base. But now base Luffy is keeping up in combat with hybrid Kaido.
It would be one thing if Luffy's advanced conqueror's nearly matched Kaido's and they fought bout equally in that regard. But matching hybrid Kaido's speed, strength etc? Absolutely ridiculous.

Also, it does seem that Luffy is using his G3 a lot in this battle.

But yeah, still ridiculous.

Actually it doesnt bother me, if there comes a sentence like he needs all his concentration and power to do that haki things and cant use the gears while doing it, it would be ok.
This is what I think so as well.
Hyogoro said something similar to Luffy.
Pretty much all instances of us seeing Luffy using advanced armament was also never in his G4 (IIRC)

But the issue is, G4 is what gives Luffy a considerable boost to his physical strength and speed. Without G4, even Zoro and Sanji are superior to Luffy in CQC at least.

If Luffy can't match Kaido's combat speed and physical strength in his G4, it makes no sense that he does, in his base or G3.

The only issue I have with the Luffy/Kaido fight is that I consider it a crime that Luffy is going to beat Kaido in less time than it took him to "beat" katakuri.

The is an issue I have with Oda introducing 5 to 10 day fights against top tiers however.

In the context of Luffy, his growth rate is not a surprise. As a shounen MC this is beyond common and gets worse as the shounen nears its end. I'm more a fan of gradual powering up but it so rarely happens now.

Wano was always going to end with Luffy defeating Kaido. I'm not sure what people were expecting. They have a had 200+ chapters to come to the realization that Oda had no way of realistically having Luffy beat Kaido after he got 1 shot. You had to know bs was coming....

Luffy’s Gears has always been a physical boost/power up for him.

Pre TS they were significant as he needed to learn/use Gears skills to overcome the current challenges.

Post TS, We see Luffy has incorporated G2 & G3 much more fluidly into his fighting style. He can use these skills without the initial start up.

G4 is Luffy’s strongest Gear that Boosts up Luffy’s Muscles, elasticity & uses lot of Haki. It’s a trump card, being that it exhaust Haki until it needs to be recovered.

It is very reasonable/ Makes sense Base Luffy with ACoA & ACoC can now hit heavier & deeper against the high tiers W/O G4’s boost

The "he fought for x hours" was all bullshit from the getgo.

IMO, it is simply Oda's way of generating hype and saying that "these two characters are close enough in power level"

If two characters were truly fighting bloodlusted, the fight between them would last less than an hour.

The only way a fight between two characters can last longer is if they aren't actually fighting all out.

WB (old and sick) was slightly stronger than Akainu. The fight between them was an extreme diff W for WB.
Yet, it lasted a few minutes only.

Yep, definitely.

I was expecting things to be different in OP, but apparently not!
I had the expectation, because powerscaling in OP to be a lot more sensible. The two year timeskip was done very well, the powerup they received in the two years wasn't some terrible nonsense (like in FT for eg lol).

The strawhats didn't suddenly reach Yonko level or something coming out of the timeskip. They were at the stronger ends of Veteran pirates, which makes sense considering their potential and training. Luffy was at say YC2 tier, Zoro YC3 tier and Sanji Tobiroppo tier.
Even in WCI, the powerscaling wasn't wack. Luffy was somewhat close to Katakuri in pure stats, and slowly learned somewhat future sight over many hours (which makes sense with the whole haki blooms in battle thing).

The powerups from beginning of Wano to end of Wano however, is utterly ridiculous. They grew more in these 2-3 weeks, than they grew in the 2 year timeskip!!!

Wano was always going to end with Luffy defeating Kaido. I'm not sure what people were expecting. They have a had 200+ chapters to come to the realization that Oda had no way of realistically having Luffy beat Kaido after he got 1 shot. You had to know bs was coming....
I think a lot of us would've had less of an issue if base Kaido didn't blitz and one shot G4 Luffy in the beginning of the arc.

Not only was it an attack power feat, but also a combat speed feat.

WE saw in the raid that characters less durable than beginning of Wano G4 Luffy was tanking multiple hits from Kaido.
So, we tried to rationalize it as "that attack power is just outlier"

But now, the speed and physical strength of Kaido are also outliers as well? Since, base Luffy is keeping up with his speed and strength, I suppose so! Unless someone wants to make the argument that current base Luffy is faster and physically stronger than beginning of Wano G4 Luffy

It does somewhat make sense that Luffy's conqueror's haki has reached Yonko tier, since conqueror's haki can't be trained and is a function of willpower.

Regarding attack power, yes.

Advanced conqueror's only boost attack power and defense/CQC (due to "gap" technique).
Other stats should remain same. It doesn't boost Luffy's speed for eg.

Sometimes I have the same thoughts as I seen previously as to how or why Luffy is fighting so well in Base?; Why or When is he gonna bust out G4? So i replied with the reason

I mentioned Luffy’s Gears. One Piece fans at this point know what they do, so I didn’t state the obvious. Instead I highlighted how they are now used & what ACoC means for Luffy.

Its all love bro. I’m guilty of it too at times. But ya kinda nit Picked my post, didn’t add anything that I didn’t allude or mention.

Luffy’s gears are his advance skills with his DF ability. Luffy has however made these skills activation more basic Post Time Skip. He uses these skills with little to no effort now.!Similar to how Luffy’s skills with his DF ability advanced from when he first ate it & tried to fight Ace & Sabo pitifully. From the beginning of the series, all the way to currently; Luffy’s skills with his have always gotten better.

So base Luffy isn’t really just base Luffy. He has his gears 2 & 3 to use fluidly in a fight to match the situation. they arent his big trump cards anymore G4 is. & it has to be sparingly used because of the amount of Haki it takes up.

Now add in ACoC & ACoA it should make sense why or how Luffy is competing with Kaido or anyone of his stature w/o G4.

G4 will be his trump card and much more deadly because

While I agree with you, the fight between Aokiji and Akanui occurred during a time the New World was in chaos as a result of Whitebeards death. From everything we are told Akainu, once he took control moved swiftly to stabilize the New World.
Akainu wouldn't waste 10 whole days fighting Aokiji because he didn't want to go out. It is completely out of character for him. He is a character that moves quickly and decisively.

WB (old and sick) was slightly stronger than Akainu. The fight between them was an extreme diff W for WB.
Yet, it lasted a few minutes only.

I doubt in a prolonged fight, Whitebeard at that point(half his face blown out and post heart atrack) would have been victorious.

Old Whitebeard at the beginning of Marineford, would have crushed Akainu in a 1v1

What is speed but the power you put into your legs and push off the ground with? ACoC aguements limbs, like Luffy's arms. If he utilizes ACoC and can certainly us it to argument the power in his legs to gain faster momentum.

To me ACoC, once fully mastered give a blanket increase to all physical stats depending on the degree of mastery

Yeah the whole takes x hours or x days to finish off a fight was bullshit starting from Ace vs Jimbei, Aokiji vs Akainu, Cat/Dog vs Jack, Luffy vs Cracker (albeit Luffy was running away), Luffy vcs Katakuri (almost the same as he ran away for awhile), Big Mom vs Kaido, and Roger vs WB. Idk what the point was besides overhyping. I would understand 1 whole day of fighting but 3, 5 or 10...nah.
Like it hyped up Jack, but then Jack was such a let down all of Wano arc, smh.
Then with Luffy lasting nearly 10 hours on defeating Cracker and Kata (Yonko Commanders) it made me believe Zolo and Sanji were gonna take hours on defeating them.
As well as Luffy vs Kaido, I was thinking it would take days if not hours. But seeing as Oda is kinda back tracking on that, I bet he thinks he made a mistake on bringing up the longevity of fights to add suspense and hype.

Thinking about how overhyped and how high the stakes were and threat of the Yonkos that Oda portrayed time and time, with Luffy's one hit k.o. defeat, I entertained the idea that the raid may go sideways with Luffy's side losing and retreating to fight another day. I didnt believe Luffy would defeat Kaido at all. To me it would be more interesting and made more sense in the power level scaling, if Luffy lost to Kaido in Onigashima, and then went on to have another small training arc. Not only Luffy but maybe as well as Sanji and Zolo, just to add to the threat to the Yonko. Because the Yonko arent just any other average pirate crew or Warlord crew that the Straw Hats are taking down. They are the epitome of the Pirate World and for 1 small Pirate crew to take down the officers and captain of the Yonkos even with help to fend off the fodder, it is heavily disappointing such a let down. For Oda to hype up the Yonkos so much.... pathetic.

Oda saw how strong he made the Yonko, that by Onigashima he made them weaker and gave a huge power up to Luffy, Law, and Kid, especially Luffy. Disappointed with Oda.
Also, I kinda hope we see a Gear 5 instead of Awakening or another Gear 4 form (I've heard theories of a possible "Tigerman"), unless Oda decides to make Gear 5 his awakening. Gear 5 should be the next thing.

For me it feels like, Gomu Gomu no attacks are over, same for gears. All this building up with "gomu gomu no mi has been stolen from the wg", "we change the name of the fruit from the elders"(without specifying its the gomu gomu no mi thou) hints for me to something luffy has been doing wrong with his fruit.

I think Luffy will only go into more haki, more haki, more advanced haki etc. DBZ powerlevelscale. And his fruit will help with him that once he realizes or gets the info whats the real name is.

Maybe you can only awake devilfruits, when you know their real name too. Kinda like Bankai in bleach...

Anyhow like I said the 1 hit KO was a mistake that broke scaling , I just don’t see king Marco getting one shot by a yonkou , especially when you have the scabbards suddenly hanging , I don’t care if they’re 8 , kaido was aiming to kill and they did get back jo from some of his blows
Heck kin tankijg that attack was bull shit
I get he was trying to build hype but bleh
The fights structure and scaling in wano been all over the place

I love how people are like, if Enel does this and this and this, he’s be unstoppable. Ignoring, he had the perfect terrain for his ability. He had a ship that was actively allowing him to amplify all of his powers. An he had no real opponents. Enel is the epitome of a frog in the well. An honestly, most of the supernova would have given him the same treatment. An he’s an absolute scrub in the new world. Maybe if Katakuri took pity on him and trained him for a year, but he gets beaten down by a Yonko crew and spends his future trying to be made a commander. Buddy isn’t still relevant, he’s just not.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

I doubt kuro's speed would mean all that much to enel. You have to factor in power scaling as well...

I think that based on the current context enel would be situationally powerful within the new world. His fruit is exceptionally dangerous even by today's standards. Enel can basically teleport and his observation haki range is ridiculous. I don't think anyone in the new world has actually matched his range yet... That said, from a physical perspective he would be pretty weak in the new world. In a naval battle enel would be absurd given his range when combined with the precision his haki gives him. but you would need to keep mid tier new world people the heck away from him. His attacks are also probably powerful enough to hurt pretty much anyone. Even a yonko would be at least annoyed by an actual lightning strike.... YC1-3 wouldn't appreciate it.
Literally all of the Supernova ate a Yonko’s lightning. An there is nothing to suggest his would be comparable in any way. Just saying.

These complaints make more sense if we don’t have an entire part of the arc dedicated to Luffy doing physical training without his DF and working on just that. I feel like the idea was that he was working on his base strength and speed and such and raising it to the next level. In addition to the fact that he’s a conqueror Haki specialist. So him getting this massive boost, that dwarfs what was shown in his other crew mates, I can rock with that. An he is still incorporating Gears 2&3, and I love how amazing they look.

Bro, we see character who are definitely BELOW in durability relative to beginning of Wano Luffy tanking hits from Kaido during the raid.
Scabbards tanked multiple attacks from Kaido.
Law shrugged off a thunder bagua from hybrid Kaido. Zoro, who exhausted all his stamina and had many of his bones broken, got hit by thunder bagua from hybrid Kaido and was still conscious. Maybe you think rooftop Zoro and Law are tankier than beginning of Wano Luffy, but a LOT tankier? I doubt

The issue is, without G4, I don't see how Luffy can compete with Kaido's speed and strength.
Advanced conq doesn't improve those.

Oh yes, I definitely agree that some of these "lasted for x days" fights were fully serious.

Like you said, Aokiji and Akainu were serious. So were Jack and Cat/Dog

My point is that, this is an inconsistency/BS from Oda. Because we know that if characters are truly serious, the fight isn't lasting for more than an hour. Because that is what the series has shown us. Every serious fight ends within an hour.

This is precisely the reason these are off screen fights.

The only exception to this I can buy logically, would be Marco and King.
Cause Marco can heal himself until he runs out of stamina. But that would be, him fighting above his paygrade and stalling. If he's fighting someone within his ballpark or below him, the fight ends within an hour if he's serious as well.
Or King facing against a stronger non advanced conq user, he can stall by just staying his his defence mode, until he runs out of stamina.

I doubt in a prolonged fight, Whitebeard at that point(half his face blown out and post heart atrack) would have been victorious.

Old Whitebeard at the beginning of Marineford, would have crushed Akainu in a 1v1
Yea, it was a double KO IMO.
WB would've eventually succumbed to his injuries and died.
Akainu was straight up KO'd, and would've died if he didn't get lucky and fall off a cliff.

Old WB at beginning of Marineford? Nah, would've still been an very tough battle. He was off his meds for days, was sick and was barely able to use haki.
Old WB in meds, whose conqueror's haki equaled Shanks' ? Definitely. Not destroy, but mid-high diff

The thing is, we see when Luffy is using his advanced conqueror's.
He's exclusively using it for defending himself, or for attacking. Luffy hasn't used it for boosting his speed yet at least, if he was capable of doing that, ODa would've shown it to us already.

Till now, all usages of advanced conqueror's that we have seen are for boosting attack power (deeper hits), and for defense/CQC (using gap to block/push back attacks)

I will die on the hill that the one shot by kaido was a mistake and Oda over doing the hype

Not sure, it was good example of showing the power difference between the two, remember Kaido took out Luffy twice before this current fight

Don't forget that Crocodile took Luffy out twice before he was defeated back in Alabasta as well.

But Oda is not perfect with his power levels, one of the most glaring examples was King and Zoro this arc, Zoro being able to wound Kaido but struggling to do ANY damage to King until he worked out the "trick" to it was frustrating.

Luffy losing is valid but he was stronger faster and more durable than any scabbard at that point
Losing is fine , the gap wasn’t to the point of a one shot , I just can’t see Kata Marco And king being one shot by kaido
I get scaling is the end all be all but for me it was over the top imo

Well, Marco and King are a lot tankier than Katakuri, they specialize in being tanks while Katakuri specialize in avoiding hits.

But yeah, Katakuri isn't getting one shot by the Kaido we saw in rooftop. Neither should beginning of Wano G4 Luffy.

The strongest amongst the scabbards are YC2 tier IMO (sulong Cat/Dog, Kyoshiro). Every single scabbard is less durable that Katakui/G4 Luffy. So is Killer.
All of them tanked multiple hits from Kaido.

Killer even tanked hits from both Kaido and BM, and went onto pretty much low-mid diff Hawkins lmao.

That one shot is 100% an outlier.

Why wouldn't katakuri get one shot by kaido? Gear 4 luffy is plenty fast and had foresight.... Along with being very durable as well. I can understand king taking a hit from a yonko and not getting one shot since he has a specific ability which enables to endure extreme damage and even marco since he can heal right back up but katakuri is far less durable than either of them. Gear 4 luffy at the start of the wano arc should be perfectly competitive against the yonko crew's first mates...
