I can't count how often I was wrong about the gender of a character...

But I'm pretty sure Mavis is a girl.

Personally I prefer the latter but I call him by the former. Jellal is what Mashima chose as the correct spelling so it doesn't really make much sense to call him by anything different. Gerard is one of the many translations people chose based on what people were familiar with when reading the katakana.

Laxus Dreyar is the official english version, the german version also uses this spelling. Erza is spelled Elsa Scarlett in my volumes though, so they can be wrong, too

In some cases Elza is spelled by the author as Erza,Elsa and Elza. i could give the pages but you should see for yourself ^^ . So in the japanese volumes where there is romanji used its spelled 3 different ways. So using the Dutch/German common name of Elsa isnt against logic. Your volumes arnt incorrect or correct on this. Its the inconsistency of the author thats to blaim

However the majority of the fanbase believe in the holy name of Erza and do not see anything in Elsa (its either to plain to them or its not what the author wrote (incorrect since he did use it a few times) and there is the part of Elsa having a actual meaning while Erza is just gibberish no matter what language)

In a earlier chapter it was writter Elsa once, and before that when happy was turfing on a board it read Elza. So as far as i can tell Mashima might not have thought about her name in romanji. matter of fact if you take her name in japanese and revert it you get the official name of Elsa. Like if someone names his kid エルザ in japan, and that kid were to go to any western country, shed be named Elsa and nothing else.

Also if someone is named Elsa in the west and goes to japan, your name will be エルザ.

So for me it takes little effort to conclude Mashima only thought of エルザ and never thought about how to romanize it. Furthermore people read japanese in Japan and dont see any difference between Erza,Elza or Elsa to them its the same.

As an spanish speaker I would dread the very thought of calling erza elsa. "Elsa" has to be among the most horrible least sexy names in the spanish language(no offense to anyone in particular called elsa, its just, well....). I very much would prefer any name but that one at the moment. Heck, I don't even know an elsa to this day who is actually pretty, if anything every elsa I know is at least twice my size (obviously I am not an exceptionally large dude (5'7, 145 pounds)) with a rather buff voice. Maybe that has something to do with my perception of the name (it is not about to change though).

To be correct, Elsa would be エルサ, while Erza/Elza would be エルザ。I know about the different spellings, but in the link I provided earlier, the official spellings given to the american publisher by Mashima-sensei are also mentioned.

I don't own any of the recent volumes, so I can't check which name is currently used for Erza.
My favorite version would be Elza though

matter of fact id be lmao if we ever get a flashback to her youth prior to the tower and she turns out to be named Elisabeth Like her mother named her Elizabeth and her parrents died horribly and the children of their city (village) were kidnapped and taken as slave laborers ?
