Who is the main character?

Well lately I've been thinking who is the main character of Fairytail? First, I thought it was Natsu because he is the typical shounen hero, but on the other hand there is Lucy. We are following her story. We already know she is telling the story. Most of the time the story revolves around them or they are the main focus at times. I just wanted to get people's opinion on who they thought is the main character of Fairy Tail

I don't honestly think this topic deserves discussion. It is blatantly obvious this manga is about natsu. Lucy sometimes tells the story but that still does not change that natsu is the indisputable main character. Natsu not being the main character is about as likely as hinata and tenten getting their spin off manga.

Well he does have a point, the story is being told by Lucy, but there is no doubt that Natsu is the main character. Though, Lucy and Happy are also main characters.

Then there are the secondary characters, Erza, Gray, Wendy, Charle, Gajeel and then the not so important characters like Mira, Elfman, etc.

But like I said, there's no doubt that the main character is Natsu, followed by Happy and Lucy.

They are both main characters.
The hero is Natsu
the heroine is Lucy.

HOWEVER, that does NOT mean that they will both pair up and go into a relationship with hugs and kisses.
NO, because I believe that Lisanna is the one for natsu
and nobody will change that opinion of mine.

I agree with Zeltrax for everything apart of the Nali (Nalu ftw!) but as Lucy is narrating the story she is the main because who tells the story must have some importance and there are a lot of mysteries about Lucy, it just points ouut it is HER story of HER adventures with her friends and of course Natsu who has a pretty mysterious past not yet fully explained like Lucy and who happens to be her best friend (and hopefully more =P i shall stop here now for Zeltax's sake with the Nalu xP)

it is a stroy on a guild though so there could be more important characters like Gray and Erza but their story has now been explained, not counting Ultear's reappearance and her 'WTH!!!! Im your friend!!??? What? moment' with Gray

it would be natsu as the main hero and lucy as the main heroine and happy for added comedy

basically natsu, lucy and happy are the main characters because the story practically revolves around them, lucy is like a narrator telling the story and natsu is like the main character in her story but there are times when the story can focus on other characters like gray and erza but natsu always plays a big part in all of it while lucy always narrates it from the backround

both natsu and lucy i think both have big roles. also i always saw elie and haru as main characters in rave master to. even though haru was the hero

Natsu's the main character. He's the one named after a season.

What's that got to do with him being named after a season?

Luffy's the main character in One Piece and he isn't named after a season.

Unless your talking about Rave, where Haru was also named after a season.

Its because Mashima named his mains after seasons;
Haru - Spring (Rave)
Natsu - Summer (Fairy Tail)
Shiki - seasons (Monster Hunter)
Aki=Autumn (Monster Soul)

but still like Elie was the main heroine in Rave, Lucy is the main heroine in Fairy Tail

Well...

The problem here is similar to that of Haruhi's Chronicles, essentially you have the story being told from the perspective of one character while focusing on another one.

Lucy is like Kyon, we see their worlds through their eyes and experiences despite the focus them not being the constant focus of the story.

Interestingly Lucy can, like Kyon, influence the world in a way no one else can despite being considered the least special member of her party.

Kyon despite being a human is the only one who can put the over enthusiastic super powered main character under control and strangely enough he is implied to have some deep connection to the truth behind Haruhi's powers.

Lucy despite being the weakest in Natsu's brigade (lol) can quell up any confrontations when needed not to mention she is also deeply involved in the biggest mistery of the series.

Even more odd is the fact that both Lucy and Kyon tend to get the greatest amount of abuse in their respective universes.

Anyway, back to the main character issue you can say that Natsu is the
main character by focus while the de facto main character would actually be Lucy.

In essence Natsu gets the most important role in every adventure despite the focus many times being another character's own issues.

Lucy on the other hand plays the constant point of orientation from were the reader can get a grasp of the situation and immerse himself in the story.

It's a funny yet complicated way to tell a story but it pays off when done right.

Its pretty simple, both Natsu and Lucy are the main characters, so far all of Mashimas bigger stories had 2 mains.

In Mashima's works it all focusses on 2 characters so you cant exclude 1 or the other.

Elie is the main of Rave but Haru is as well. They are joined main. So is it with Natsu and Lucy.

I gree with this aswell. I think Lucy is the main character who is the story teller and Natsu is also a main character but more like a hero of the story.

I don't see how she could ever be the center. Every major fight has been decided by Natsu. Where Lucy has fought and won and has continued to upgrade her keys, she has yet to beat anyone that matters to the plot. To me her only purpose is eye candy for the audience, very nice looking candy at that.

Main character can be taken as being multiple, a pair or one but Fairy tail seems to take a lot of its characters seriously so you cant really tell who is the main BUT

Natsu and the others slayers story is always being added to throughout the arcs, but Natsu is the one who does mostly the hero and is more focused on thus he is the main male, Gray's story has been done, its Ultears now not his, he's only connected.

Lucy's is also a mystery what with she being the narrator but not only, we see her improving from arc to arc and there are mysterious revolving around her which Mashima gives us in small snippets, her mum, her, magic, the keys being some examples ^^ Erza's story is done, we got it all now, lucy we have yet to know what she did in that year she wasnt with FT after running away and how she got her first keys and her mum. she is the main female

then again Mashima said in the interview we can make our own assumptions but the above is my opinion ^^

Cana whom we now know has a really cool story

LOki who turned out to be Leo the Celestial Lion Spirit
The Master whom is connected to Hades and Laxus etc
