He didn't go on a quest to defeat Acnologia. Or at least this wasn't stated. He went on a 100 year quest and encountered Acnologia and lost, thus being being unable to complete the quest.
the 100 yr quest was to defeat Acno. that why Makarov asked him whether he succeed the moment he stepped back in the guild. And he said its impossible for me and apologised for bringing a bad name to the guild. Then , Makarov said, he was the first man to come alive after fighting Acno, so he should be proud.

I do agree on Gildarts' resilience in this situation.

Well vitals or not, he was fatally wounded. I'm not a dr so Idk what organs would be where he was attacked and I'm too lazy to google it. What I'm saying is Acnologia can with ease take body parts from Serena or Gildarts to the point that they're injuries aren't attributed to their durability/strength, it's attributed to where Acnologia's attacks hit.
Indeed he can, but if we're considering that he used singular attacks on both (or well, the one that did damage was singular) and that Gildarts probably took a larger chunk, then resilience/durability will still feature. Isn't that the kinda stuff FT (especially Erza) are famous for? Attacks that should normally be fatal or leave one unable to fight are brushed off.
And considering prior to Gildarts, there was no one who faced Acnologia and lived, then it's more than just luck imo.

I agree on what dragon form brings to the table. What I am questioning is would it matter at all if Acnologia was in human form. I don't think it would.
It doesn't, technically speaking. The point is that Gildarts didn't take any less damage than Serena. If anything, he took more, and survived.

Well the dragon itself was never actually mentioned. Makarov sad he was the first to return alive from the 100 year quest. Not from facing acno. And when Gildarts spoke to Natsu, he said he met a dragon on his quest and that was how he failed the mission

Gildarts implied acno showing up was why he failed. I guess it can be inferred that the mission was to defeat acno, but that wasn't stated to be the mission itself, except this is a wrong translation or something

While it was not mentioned, Gildart also said to Makarov, "its impossible for me to do it" (ore niwa muri da), not only that he coudn't finish sue to Acno. That means he was talking about defeating Acno.

It is a possibility but I wouldn't say this is conclusive. The wording is ambiguous enough that it could have a number of other interpretations. In the end the purpose of the actual mission was never stated.

That's anime though. Manga is canon and the basis of the story. Anime takes liberties when portraying either by adding or taking away. Like I said, the quest being to defeat acno is a likely possibility but it wasn't explicitly stated and a number of things can be inferred from how the whole thing was posed.

Yes, but i was under the impression, in original japanese anime, the dialogues are same as in the jap manga. Isn't that so?

Wait that isn't even said in the anime either.
The dialogues are the same sometimes, sometimes they're also different. Anyway, in this case, it's indeed the same as the manga

Said that the quest was to defeat Acnologia? It's healthy speculation but not actually manga fact so to say.

no, about anime-manga equivalence.
Anyway, He says, "Dameda, ore ja muri dawa."
That unambiguously means,: "no, its impossible for someone like me."

if it is not Acno that implies there is yet another job for which Gildart admits is impossible for him to finish. I wont believe that in a 100 yrs..lol.

Well yeah he did say that but there are a number of things that Gildarts can't do. We can't say much until that's clarified. He failed the quest anyway. Maybe it's certain that one would encounter Acnologia in the course of the quest.

Ok, lets agree to disagree.
Only thing in this topic, I think its best practice to follow the Occam's Razor, for this and for other situations., because a lot of things are always possible...

Yes Gildarts took a larger chunk, but it's just a lesser deadly chunk. A head is smaller than an arm or leg, but it's no more difficult for Acnologia to take. But I'm not really getting at Gildarts durability. It's quite obvious it's a non-factor here, Acnologia can breach it easily. I mean we're talking about a guy who can kill Igneel, yet Gildarts survived.

I think if we're going on the fact that no one survived beforehand, then luck is a realistic possibility.

Well, the past arc puts the power we have seen from gildarts so far somewhere between "worthless fodder" and "adequate secondary character" depending on plot requirements. I mean, just look at what his power compares to nowadays. His former peers in terms of power either got a dramatically huge increase in terms of power (laxus) or simply got outright foderized (jura). And the guy that foderized jura was in turn foderized as well. And the guys above jura in the wizard saints also got foderized. And half of fairy tail seems to be well above what gildarts used to have. Erza, natsu and grey seem to be dramatically stronger. Lucy has suggested that while she won't beat natsu she can hold her own. Which means that conservatively lucy can hold her own against gildarts, as we have seen him, and stretching it a bit he could even beat him (he did pretty well against ajir and is literally the sole reason jacob was defeated). Her worst case scenario would be the stellar spirit king which matched mard geer with the power she had one year ago... A stellar spirit king today could probably take on a springan. Screw it, even dragon force wendy would be able to do something here. a year back wendy was a match for second origin jubia which puts her base form well above natsu before the GMGs. Add in a presumably large increase in power and then dragon force and you have a force to be feared. Anyways, back to the point. If gildart, as we last saw him, is so vastly outclass by so many mages and is so far away from being the strongest or even in the same tier as the stronger mages around, then there being god knows how many missions he can't complete is pretty much a certainty. It's a big world and the people we used to think were top dogs are far from that.

As far as gildarts and bluenote, I think people are sort of missing important details Gildarts won that fight using what seems to be one of his stronger spells, or at least the strongest one we have seen from him yet. While it is true that gildarts went at it without his magic for a bit, he never manhandled bluenote and him having to go that far to beat him is impressive enough as it is. Also worth noting, while gildarts did have his magic he got a power boost due to being on tenrou island.
I wouldn't necessarily call those important details but rather minor ones. The highlight of that fight was Gildarts defeating Bluenote with relative ease after getting his power back. The few punches that occurred before the Tenrou Tree fell was quite even and was mainly used just to hype the battle or create suspense instead of just a one-shot. Therefore, those scenes really have no meaning.

The problem here is that what seems to be a stronger spell is pure speculation. Gildarts has really shown only 1 attack of that nature besides Crash and Diassembly Magic. To say that it seems strong because it took out Bluenote really doesn't tell us anything. The way Gildarts punched Bluenote is quite comparable to how Natsu took out Bakel.

Additionally, stating that Gildarts received a power boost on Tenrou shouldn't be used to analyze his feats either. That plot was most likely poorly written as we saw almost everyone in Fairy Tail barely handling one of the 7 Kin of Purgatory. To say that Gildarts had the advantage with a power boost is like saying that Natsu, who barely defeated Zancrow by himself, would have lost. The same conclusion can also be used for Gray's fight against Ultear, Erza's fight against Azuma, etc. In a sense, the power boost from the Tenrou Tree really comes out as a wash because Fairy Tail experienced both a boost and an energy drain.

What are you rambling about? Have you see post timeskip Gildart. Everything you say has already been refuted in this thread in great details. And if you think Lucy can beat Gildartz, you must be watching some different show.

Sema can destroy a part of an island without a doubt.

When did he fought Natsu without using magic? Gildarts didn't appear in the Tartaros arc.

I was talking about Alvarez Jellal and Laxus being stronger than pre-timeskip Gildarts, not pre-timeskip Jellal and Laxus.

Pre-timeskip Natsu is a lot weaker than Current Natsu. Gildarts had the upper hand when he fought Natsu in the Tenrou arc but had a hard time against Bluenote. Current Natsu one shotted Bluenote.

Current Laxus is stronger than Current (Base) Natsu, which is a fact.

Tartaros Jellal defeated the Oracion Seis and I can't see Current (Base) Natsu doing the same. Current Jellal should be stronger.

So in the end:

Laxus = Jellal > Natsu > pre-timeskip Gildarts

Gildarts can take the Oración Seis down, but not with the same diff as Jellal. Jellal defeated all of them with one blow. There is no way how Gildarts could defeat all of them like Jellal did. For instance, what could Gildarts do against Racer? And against Midnight? He would cast a freaking illusion from Acnologia or something. Current Jellal has more feats than Gildarts has ever shown.

Sema would do major damage to Gildarts. You could be right that he won't be defeated directly, but what about his other spells? Grand Chariot could do a lot damage as well. I can't see a way Gildarts could do major damage to Jellal. Jellal could dodge his spells with Meteor. There is one thing Gildarts doesn't have, which is speed. He would have a lot trouble with Meteor.

I'd say Laxus is more or less equal with Ajeel, Jacob and Wahl. God Serena and Di Maria are stronger than him if you'd ask me. Laxus is at the lower Spriggan tier.

I agree with you that Jellal is equal with him.

Based on what I've seen from Gildarts, I'd rank him as strong as Jura. There is a possible chance he will appear this arc and take down a Spriggan, because most of the stronger Fairy Tail characters already had the chance. Side characters will probably be used to be defeated.
When has current Jellal ever shown to be on current Natsu's level let alone Laxus'?

I personally want him to appear in this arc. He doesn't necessarily have to be still stronger than Natsu or Laxus, nor solos a Spriggan. But just to prove that he is still one of FT's powerhouses and he's always loved his daughter and will always be there anytime she needs. He should be aware of his position, that he is a father. Where is your responsibility, Gildarts? Your guild is being threatened and your help is needed here.

But I'd be glad if he can solo a Spriggan, or if not, at least he needs only one wizard to assist him. However who will be his opponent? The remaining Spriggans who still don't have opponent are August and Invel. Invel will likely fight Gray and co if in the near future chapters FT will arrange new strategies and send Gray and co to west side via Mest. August?

For starters, Wendy couldn't stand under Bluenote's Gravity. How can she possibly best Gildarts?
Half the guild? That's a pretty outrageous exaggeration. There's a case for Natsu and Laxus, but how exactly are the others above Gildarts (as of the silent chapter)? You do recall Gildarts was still strong enough to toy around with Natsu and send him flying and then scare Natsu shitless after showing a serious attack. And then Gildarts has crash and disassembly which works on both magic and people. That's seriously underestimating Gildarts tbh.
That's comparing Gildarts durability to Acnologia's offensive power. Obviously the latter far outclasses. But Gildarts durability compared to Serena's is a reasonable one. That's my point. Also, if Acnologia had to use another attack (or with more seriousness) than the first, that's still a plus for Gildarts. Acnologia ripped Igneel but he did that after they had duked it out a fair bit.
About it being less deadly, that's only speculation. It's just like when Jura hit Orga and Laxus in GMG. Orga went down, Laxus got back up. Jura used a minor attack in both cases. That's pretty much how I see Acnologia and Serena/Gildarts. Acnologia used an attack on both (not going all out), one survived, the other didn't. Tbh, I don't see why one can't attribute this in part to Gildarts resiliency.

Not really. It can be said that with the level of attack Acnologia uses normally, people don't survive but Gildarts could. Anyway, I guess there can't be a compromise in this
