Gray never used his trump card wtf ? He's only going to use this against end(full power) or if he fights zeref with natsu.

You act as if Natsu isn't running off a big PoF boost either. Gray would've taken out Natsu if he ended up using his trump card. Gray also brushed off Natsu's attacks fairly easily and pushed him back, he even made him eat dirt in the ground. Gray also overpowered Natsu during their exchange.

Typical underestimation of Gray and overestimation of Natsu by Samuel. What fight where you watching? Why make baseless assumptions that Gray couldn't go toe to toe and that he was overpowered if he didn't have POF? I can easily suggest that Gray dominated Natsu in spurts. His best feat in this arc is against END. That is fact.

Gray didn't use his trump card. He was using devil slaying magic. Explain why he didn't have the tattoo when he was using DeS in the avatar? Simple solution: It was a plot hole.

Read the damn fight again, because they were portrayed to be equals, and your BS excuses aint gonna fly with here unless they are rabid die hard Natsu fanboys.

Difference is Gray is a main character and so devil slayers will play a vital role for a powerup as opposed to god slayers.
Yes, both of them went through trauma to cause that state of mind in both of them, Gray got his darkness and Natsu began to start transforming into E.N.D (and was continuing to transform throughout that fight). Yes, Gray had pushed him back a bit at one point, but to me it looked like before Erza intervened, Natsu was starting to gain the upper hand as he transformed more, and I think that is a reasonable assertion to make seeing his attacks were clearly getting stronger too while he brushed off Gray's attacks.

All I ever said was that I thought it possible the tattoo was the trump card he was referring too. Why didn't he use it in Avatar? Why would he use his strongest stuff against people who aren't E.N.D, his sworn enemy? It doesn't make sense. It's obvious that he's able to control when he uses the power the tattoo provides just like the black marks that appear on his body which he's stated he can control.

I read the fight again and yes they were equal for most of it imo. I don't think they'd of been equals for much longer if Natsu had kept transforming, he was obviously getting stronger and there's no way to say Gray would be able to keep up if he kept transforming and getting stronger.

People calling "Darkness" a PoF power-up while "Darkness" isn't even a thing right now.

Speaking of PoF, did people forget how Natsu activated his E.N.D. form exactly?
Darkness isn't even a thing? Let me show you the official kodansha translations of 498 that crunchyroll hosts.

There's your darkness right that, Invel said it was on the verge of releasing in Gray and it released when Juvia "died". It's what powered him up enough to defeat Invel and kept him fighting against the transforming Natsu while his wound had re-opened and he was bleeding out (check Chapter 504, Gray is clearly bleeding from his wound again).

Darkness is a thing, but it isn't a thing at this very moment. Unless you can show me where it's stated that his Darkness got activated when Juvia "died". It was obvious just his hatred for Invel that came into play at that very moment, it had nothing to do with a magical power-up. You can't deny that you're using unfair assumptions towards Gray here, again.

I'd like to hear your opinions on this guys...

After the recent chapters I cannot help but wonder how the hell Gray will play in the Acnologia fight (which will supposedly happen in a different arc). Compared to the other team Natsu members, he is really distant and disconnected to this story line for playing a main role in it.

Natsu: he's END, he's a Dragon Slayer and Plotsu :eyeroll
Wendy: she's a DS.
Lucy: main character + Nalu angst
Erza: she was really out of this too but Irene Belserion happened. She will gain dragon powers for sure.

Gray's story is definitely wrapping up since by the end of this arc he will eventually come to terms with END and I'd say Zeref too.

It's obvious that he will be there when this Acno fight happens but how? Other than Tenroujima he hasn't a strong connection to him like the others... so, idk, I am curious to see what Mashima will do with Gray after this arc.

@Wanderer
Well if this were a fortnight ago I would have dismissed the idea of Gray fighting against Acnologia. But now, I don't think it's out of the question.

Lucy has the Anna relation, as well as potential power ups with One Magic (if this is a thing, speculation at this point). Erza is well, Erza. So why can't Gray get a shot?

Outside of Zeref+FH, only dragon slayers should fight Acnologia. The powerful humans shouldn't stand a chance, even someone like August. So unless we can see Gray getting that strong, how can we speculate he will have a role v Acno?

Crack theory
I would be extremely disappointed if Irene can enchant everyone and anyone with DS magic, so that everyone can fight Acnologia. Well she doesn't have dragons to 'give power' though - so she shouldn't be able to give people DSM. BUT, there is a possibility with God Serena's 8 lacrima. IF August took them, then possibly Irene could enchant them onto certain wizards. Gray would be one of them.

Crack theory 2
Gray's DeS magic allows him to absorb all of END's curse power, making Gray immensely powerful. Enough at least to be relevant in the fight. Maybe he becomes the fire and ice demon :gwah

That's the best I can do for now.

That's the probleme i have currently..i don't see how gray is going to fit in the acnologia's fight..i mean he has no relation with dragons at all..so him fighting acno would be weird..imo his biggest role is going to be against zeref

I agree with that for sure. It just doesn't feel right.

I think Zeref or END is the best place for Gray. Hopefully it's Zeref, and the END stuff is resolved without a fight. If Gray has a big hand in taking down Zeref, and is ruled out of the fight with Acnologia, I think we could live with that.

Exactly zeref is the perfect final vilain for gray to me..i mean because of him deliora killed gray's family..so i don't want him to be against acnologia..

That's a really good point, since etherious come from Zeref, then Zeref should really be Gray's target (not END). He would have to overcome that demon thirst though, like through willpower.

Zeref still needs more than Gray alone to stop him. And there's Mavis' plan to defeat Zeref. They will also need to solve how they defeat Zeref without killing Natsu. So a lot is going to happen here, but right now I like Gray to be a main player vs Zeref.

Yes you're right, zeref should really be gray's only target now..i mean end is not evil(at least currently)..

Ofc zeref needs more than gray to be defeated..i can see mavis/gray/end vs zeref in the end..that would be really cool.

Yeah exactly. The fact is that I don't see Gray not being relevant in this supposed act, so Mashima has to do something to at least connect him with the plot.

Zeref is definitely the real cause of his problems so going against him should be a must... and it's really likely to happen tbh, but not alone, of course!

EDIT: there was a comment about Gray being the stupidest character ever and I replied to it, where's it now xD well I wrote:

And I am surprised people still "hate" on Gray. He was stupid, yes, but he wasn't in his right mind because of Juvia. He was crazy mad. I am not justifying him but we should try to look at what Mashima wanted to do instead of directly pointing fingers at him.

Killing Juvia -> enraged Gray -> Invel defeat + brainwashing -> END revelation -> Gray wants to kill Natsu.

It's pretty obvious his thoughts were fucked up.
He blamed Natsu for the death of Juvia as well when we well now he has nothing to do with her. Not at all lmao it was kinda hilarious but it was just a reason to create a situation in which Gray could actually want to kill Natsu.

That's why seeing his reaction now will be interesting, even if it's obvious that at the end nobody will die or not be friends like before lol

Don't know what I would rather have Gray's trump card to be: a new mode or some crazy devil slayer spell. Hopefully it'll be "grayt"

What i can say about Gray in the Alvarez arc so far is this: huuuge disappointment

Zeref is
1) the one who is to blame for all the tragedies Gray had to face because he created the demons
2) the one who is the instigator of the current war and the leader of the opposing side which makes him a danger to all of Gray's nakama

END
1) is Gray's best friend
2) just happens to be one of Zeref's creations
3) never did anything that hurt Gray or his "loved ones"

So what does Gray do? He intercepts Natsu/END and engages in a fight to the death with him instead of going after Zeref which means
1) he stops Natsu/END from potentially killing Zeref, his true enemy
2) he endangers all of his nakama because this war could end if Zeref dies and his nakama would be saved
3) he weakens himself and Natsu by fighting which gives their opponents even more of an advantage

Gray's actions in this arc were really retarded and made him drop really far in my favourite rankings. Hopefully he will make up for it.

My personal theory is that Gray is going to attempt to use Ice Shell on Zeref so that they don't have to kill him.

What will probably end up happening (because I don't see Zeref getting taken out before the whole thing with Mavis and Fairy Heart gets resolved) is that it turns out that the hole in the END book is what is causing Natsu to transform, and Gray switches his target to that. Of course, unless Hiro is planning on going through with killing Gray, I'm guessing that Natsu will have to find a way to overcome END from within his own heart before Gray actually goes through with it. My guess is that it will probably have something to do with his Dragon Seed. I imagine that Natsu's curse power is basically competing with his magic power from within Natsu's heart. Right now the curse power is winning, and if it wins Natsu will turn into a mindless demon intent only on killing Zeref. To overcome the curse power, Natsu needs to go into his heart and undo the seal on his dragon seed that Igneel made. The magic power the dragon seed provides will overcome the curse power - preventing the transformation, but will put him at risk of dragonization.

That leaves us again with Zeref. The thing about Zeref is that he's not actually a bad guy, and I feel he deserves to find peace in death. If I had to take a stab at Mavis plan, I'm guessing it involves using her own Ankhseram's curse to overcome Zeref's. Back when they first kissed, Zeref's affections for Mavis outpaced Mavis' affections for him - and so Mavis was the one who entered a death-like state. Now that Zeref is rather heartless, I'm guessing Mavis thinks she might be able to flip the curse on him. Of course, we all know that Zeref is not actually completely heartless. So I'm guessing that their Ankhseram curse will cancel out, and both of them will become mortals. Zeref will begin to rethink his approach. He begin to appreciate life again - and that is the moment Acnologia returns.

Acnologia deals a fatal blow to both Mavis and Zeref, and we're back to square one with Natsu's predicament. If Zeref dies, so does Natsu. I believe Gray's ultimate role in the series will be to find a way to save Natsu. Now, Iced Shell would be a fitting way to bring Gray's story full circle. Gray's had a bunch of people sacrifice themselves for him, and so it would be poetic if he sacrifice himself for someone at the end. Though admittedly, killing a major character like this is not something I think Hiro would go along with (plus, Juvia would be really sad), so I think Gray's "secret weapon" might be able to sever Zeref and the book's connections to Natsu's life.

You have to remember though. As the Sting vs Larcade fight showed (and others in the series as well) matchups tend to matter. Even if Natsu has the edge in strength (which I doubt its much if at all) Gray is still a demon slayer with magic specifically made to kill demons and specifically END. That in itself gives Gray a boost when fighting against demons particularly against END. While I know he is fire and ideally fire should melt ice, lets not forget at a whim of Silver's wrist he froze Natsu solid without even trying in the slightest. Now I know that Natsu has gotten vastly stronger but I think its safe to assume that Gray at the time of inheriting Silver's power got quite the power boost as well not to mention he also had a year of training as well.

As far as his "Trump Card" I actually did a vid awhile back on it

I agree with the sentiment that Gray should ultimately fight against Zeref. Something I haven't seen anyone mention is that during the Zeref and Natsu fight, Zeref said power gained from the dead had the ability to kill him, and wouldn't Gray's power he got from Silver count as the "power of the dead"?

I would say, if anything, that Gray should encounter Zeref and take part in the fight but it shouldn't be by himself. I think Natsu (as END) would try to kill Zeref and Gray would stop him from doing it since that would mean Natsu is essentially committing suicide.

If such a thing would happen, it would mirror what Natsu did for him during the Galuna Island arc when Gray tried to cast Iced Shell. Natsu stopped him twice, telling him that he should stay alive for his friends. I think it's gonna be a switch here. This time Natsu will try to end things, and Gray will tell him to find another way so he can live for his friends.

Yes and if you're right that would mean that gray is the only one with end and mavis that can kill zeref

Next prediction:-

Gray is the distant relative of August.Lel Kek.

Now i think Gray will have a role in saving Natsu.I really don't want him to fight Natsu again as END or else Erza's effort will be in vain.

With all due respect, I fail to see how Gray's actions this arc were retarded. There are a few points I want to mention here:

1.) END is not Gray's best friend. That's Natsu. An irrational/evil demon is not a friend of Gray. There is a reason why Natsu's END transformation causes him to act drastically different and opposite to who he normally is. It's a demonic possession.

2.) Why is Gray not justified in fighting END? Fairy Tail fights and kills anybody who is evil, including Tartaros, Alvarez, and END.

Gray also fought END on behalf of his father's last and dying wish. He was given Ice Devil Slaying Magic with the purpose of killing the most powerful fire demon.

Also, what do you expect Gray to do in his situation?

Natsu is seething with rage and is causing destruction in his wake... and you expect Gray to move aside and let him reach Zeref??

That's dumb and foolish. You're letting one evil entity meet the other.

What happens if Zeref finds a way to control END, like opening the book/tome??

He's the creator and may have a way to control END. He seems pretty comfortable when he mentions END. There is an obvious hint there.

Now you got Zeref (an immortal) and END fighting FT on one side... who knows if Acnologia can even beat that...

This is absurd, Gray did everything in his power and right. He asked Natsu to explain himself, but instead of giving a proper explanation, Nastu just demanded Gray to move aside.

No, I think letting Natsu (END) pass and reach Zeref is the worse idea and could lead to ultimate destruction.

Gray's move likely stalled END and saved FT.

We were just lucky that Makarov's sacrifice using Fairy Law caused END to revert back to Natsu temporarily.

But Gray had no way of knowing what Makarov would do, so without prior intel, Gray would have no choice but to stop END in his tracks.

3.) I don't think people would mind if it were somebody else like Laxus, Erza, or Makarov who decided to fight END.

I can almost bet you that Laxus and Erza would not be like:

"Alright, go ahead and finish off Zeref, meet us back at the guild when you're done and somehow calmer."

Yeah, sure, Gray obviously has had some tragic emotional experience with demons and stuff as a child, but as far as his actions were, they were justified in my opinion, given that Natsu was acting completely abnormal.
