Think about it like this: When Marco, Jozu and the other WB pirates were veterans and fighting in the harsh era of pirates, Shanks was a cleaning boy on one of their rival's ship. And now they shall work under him and call him "Captain"? I would think this is enough humiliation for an ordinary person to want to die, let alone pirates who are all about pride. To them, Shanks is as greenhorn as any. Servants or not, how painful will it be to call someone "Captain" After the death of their "Father" who they used to call Captain for decades? I'd imagine it's pretty painful.
Do you have even a single shred of evidence for those claims? I will answer it for you: No.

We don't even know how old they are, how and when those guys joined Whitebeard, we know nearly nothing about them aside from bein proud of their father and giving their all for him and their family.

Please don't decide for others if it's humilating or not. How would you know? Yeah it wasn't preferable, if it happened, but clearly not against their will, nor will they be crew members of a lower class.

I won't chill man, don't say that about my favorite crew. The thought alone is terrifying :scry
Ah your fanboyism is clouding your judgement, so is that your okay to not take your opinion seriously anymore?

Meh, the way I see it, core WB pirates are either allied with Shanks now or they will be allied with Luffy, honoring their father's last order.
Maybe they were lying in wait for 2 years, waiting for the future Pirate King, one who is carrying Ace's legacy, but was also recognized by WB.

Other allied pirates could have stayed with WB pirates or scattered to pursue their own ambitions.

For what? Them being Pirates while Shanks was a cleaning boy? Here:

I appreciate your kindness, but don't answer for me. Twenty years ago, Marco, Jozu, Vista, Atomos and others were still part of WB's crew. Roger had just died, and Shanks was his cleaning boy. And don't tell me "Oh! It's just an anime picture, it doesn't count." It's from chapter 0, look it up on your own.

I wasn't deciding for anyone. It's an opinion, an opinion shared by Oda seeing as how he presented the WB Pirates. Yes, they will be crew members of a lower class. Horribly degrading. They were part of the "Mightiest Pirate Crew in the World" led by the "King of the Sea." Don't know how you can put a mere Yonkou on the same level.

Ah your fanboyism is clouding your judgement, so is that your okay to not take your opinion seriously anymore?
If that's your attempt at winning an argument you could not win through logic, fine be me.

A cleaning boy with Roger's strawhat on his head?

He was more than a cabin boy, that's for sure.

Since whe was age important. Age didn't help every enemy Luffy has defeated so far. We've seen Marco treating Shanks, a cleaning boy as you say, with respect.

Please get the timeline right, reading the actual chapter would have saved you this awkward history lesson from me.

Teach was just three years older and Jozu was always the brute and big type, that's not saying much, especially when this picture happened two years after the execution and Shanks already had his own crew, had experience in the Paradise and New World because of his old crew, a respected Superrookie of his time.

Still, a cleaning boy.

It's not the age, it's their history as pirates. If an elementary school teacher makes a mistake(a big one) while teaching and a kid gets up and corrects and starts teaching him instead. He will be humiliated for sure(I've seen it many times).

He respected him after he helped them.

I asked for a shred of evidence, you provided none whatsoever.

  • That's not based on the manga, so that's a wrong conjecture from your side.
  • They were led by the man with the epitaph "strongest man alive", not king of the sea, so again a wrong conjecture. They had the biggest crew, but nowhere does it say strongest, nowhere. What made him the biggest threat was having the mightiest armada of allies coupled with the strongest DF and some strong sons as we have seen in the Marineford war.
  • A "mere" Yonkou.

Shanks is not a mere emperor[that's an oxymoron by itself], he was equal to those other three, always was represented as such so don't give me such an ignorant argument please.

Your logic is clearly clouded you confirmed that with that post, not gonna bother wasting anymore time with you on this pointless discussion.

That's a wrong analogy.

Nobody gives a fuck what you have seen, you are wrong and that's it.

I give up, I can't teach someone who doesn't want to learn.

I would accept this explanation if it were any other pirate crew but it was made clear that the members of the WB Pirates were ready to follow WB till death and beyond it. Joining another pirate crew also entails accepting a different flag (which is obviously a symbol) and accepting a different leader, something they were shown to never accept.
I also don´t understand why it is a given that they were shattered as group since their admiration for WB is something they still share with each other.
Ok this then, I also don't think Marco would join the red hair pirates but an alliance is very much on the table.

Oh NO! Two years after he stopped being a cabin boy? He must have learned the history of the world. The point doesn't change. Take five years, and WB's member would've still been there. He was a rookie, cabin boy, kid, whatever. They were veteran. How about you provide a proof for this bold part?

It is.
They were led by the man with the epitaph "strongest man alive", not king of the sea, so again a wrong conjecture.
http://www.mangareader.net/103-2631-17/one-piece/chapter-524.html "We have already angered the ruler of the sea." In another translation, "We have angered the King of the Sea." Lack of knowledge about the Manga if anything.

They had the biggest crew, but nowhere does it say strongest, nowhere. What made him the biggest threat was having the mightiest armada of allies as we have seen in the Marineford war.
It was stated already by Momonga which is why I put it in a quote. I will find the chapter for you, don't worry.

EDIT: Meh, it was an anime only statement; episode 434.

He is not a mere emperor, he was equal to those other three, always was represented as such so don't give me such a ignorant argument please.
He was equal to the other two, all of which were inferior to WB. Something made ridiculously clear in this Manga.

My opinion is wrong because you said so?

For one, this was entirely a debate of opinions, by you, Vagabond, Razh, and everyone else. When I crush whatever ounce of logic in you opinion, you demand "evidence" from me? You're quickly losing your credibility.

Lot can happen in 2 years. Just look at Luffy here. From nobody to probably one of the most famous people in the world. He gained respect of elder pirates in a lot less than 2 years, even before time skip. 2 years later, even someone like Jinbei, who was fighting on the seas before Luffy was even born is willing to join his crew and obey his orders. Food for thought.

The point was to show that Marco and the others were still veteran pirates when Shanks was a rookie, cabin boy, kid and all that.

You never once "crushed" anything during this discussion.

Tomorrow is a fresh day, maybe I will collect some nervs to spend them on a reply. Your reasoning is causing me a headache.

Is that why you fell on the "bring me evidence!" and "lol fanboyism, I won't take you seriously" arguments?

I just felt like I should add something to the discussion. KingofNight, if you count Marco & Co as veterans at that time, wouldn't Shanks be one as well? Shanks is in his late-late 30's now, and Marco & Jozu are probably around the same age/Early 40's. So how can you count them as experienced NW veterans 20+ years back and Shanks as a "Rookie, cabin boy, kid and all that"? Shanks was strong enough to be a fighter on Roger's ship, clashing with crews such as the Whitebeard Pirates and the Golden Lion pirates. Even Whitebeard himself brings this up during their discussion on the Moby Dick. How they became acquainted by trying to kill each other.

To provide you with some other examples of strong influential people respecting Shanks: Sengoku respected Shanks enough to obide by his wishes during the war. Blackbeard, with his newfound power, the strongest level 6 prisoners and the rest of his crew, was afraid of losing to Shanks and felt that it was too early for their clash to happen. I'd say that these examples speak heaps of Shanks' strength and respect.

Shanks NOW is of course an experienced pirate, he's a Yonkou after all. I'm talking about THEN. By that time, he was a cabin boy(fighter or not), not on an equal rank with the first mate of WB.

I'm not saying that he's not strong, you're missing the point.

What does rank have to do with experience? They could have the same amount of experience even with different titles. And Roger giving Shanks his straw hat also says a lot about Roger's trust in him, since the hat has a huge symbolic value in the manga.

Try to tell me that a fresh military soldier has the same amount of experience as a General or a War Veteran.

If he had the same experience as the first mate of WB's pirates, he wouldn't be called an apprentice\cabin boy.

The first mate role was already filled by Rayleigh, and The Roger Pirates didn't even have divisions so there was no title for Shanks to go by. He could have had just as much experience as Marco at the time. We dont even know when Marco joined, or if he was the first mate at the time. We don't even know if they actually had divisions back then.

He is called like that only by you.

Everyone have to start from scratch and you know that. Do not continue with this if you want to be taken serious by forum members that post in this section, rethink arguments that Razh and Schabrack gave as replies to your posts.

Shanks is one of four greatest pirates in One Piece at this moment. Stronger and more charismatic than any of Whitebeard pirates alive.

Deal with it.

The whole point of being an "apprentice" is to gather experience by witnessing your seniors in action. If he had the same experience as a Veteran, he wouldn't be an apprentice, it's contradicting itself.

You're missing the point. I'm clearly wasting my time. I don't want you to tell me how awesome Shanks is.
