Could'nt agree more, (too bad for OP :() the only exception to the rule, to my opinion is Hunter x Hunter 2011, 147 episodes of epic animation, York New Arc is pure awesomeness, probably one of the best shonen adaptation I've seen.
Anything that Toei touches turns to shit, I'm always amazed by MadHouse's work, it's always good
HxH for example was freaking epic, one the best anime I've seen in a while

Hunter x Hunter is from MadHouse, not Toei. But One Piece is a bad anime even for Toei standards, despite possibly being their most popular series.
I know this, but it's not just a matter of studio, it's mainly a matter of a very long anime adaptation (100+), it's the same for most of long run animes like Fairy Tail (A-1 Pictures-), Naruto & Bleach (Pierrot) and so on.. And yes, Madhouse did an outstanding job with HxH adaptation.

Fun : Gintoki-sensei explanations (5 first minutes, from beginning to the op) :hmph :

That doesn't explain the OP anime
Look at Naruto/Bleach, at least during epic moments, it was animated in a good way and somehow we get great episodes from time to time
Now for OP, since TB arc, the anime turned to shit, even epic moments were destroyed in the anime and especially Marinford arc. There's no excuse for that kind of shit

But then again, Naruto and Bleach are handled by Pierrot, not shitty ass Toei

Also Toei completely ruined Toriko, I still can't forgive them for that farce

Totally agree, don't know Bleach, but Naruto has some great animated moments + Bgm of both is better than Op's (to my opinion).

Didn't see Toriko, yet, but quoting Kewl210 :

:huh

The controversy was about a lot of things in the manga being taken out, censored, made more kid friendly or just sorta "softened". That includes things like removing the explanations of the pseudoscience behind events, and they added in these jokey kid-friendly omakes and a filler character to explain some of the narration without using a narrator. Fans didn't want it "full of gore and edginess" they just wanted it more like the manga.

Here's a little album somebody made to explain some of the visual differences:

Bleach I'd say since the fight vs Aizen, the animation was top notch in every single episode and even the filler arc before the Fullbring arc was freaking good too

Because even if that did happen I would want to puke. I want an arc where Luffy grows. Not where Oda rips off one of my least favorite parts of Dragon Ball Z to defeat a villain I've been looking forward to for years.
Wapol's DF allowed for that kind of thing to happen. One Piece isn't about instant power ups unlike DBZ / Bleach / Naruto.
I moved it here, because this is irrelevant to today's chapter.

I do agree with you, but he said "imagine." Dragon Ball GT is not canon, but you gotta admit the fan arts of Akira Toriyama's Super Sayan 4, c17's fusion ETC were ausum. So just a fan-art fusion of cool characters like Law and Luffy would be ausum too. My opinion anyway :D

---------- Post added at 07:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:20 PM ----------

All this talk about Luffy having a new gear has made me come up with a theory. Remember how he defeated Moria in Thriller Bark? He combined both Gear Second and Third. Maybe that becomes Gear Fourth. Using them together took its toll on Luffy back then, but now that he's stronger, he should be able to combine them no problem.
Yes. I'll tell you what went through my head. Luffy's new Gear's form could have the volume of air with which Luffy inflates his arm when he is using a gear 3 divided into his trunk, upper and lower limbs , and his head, making him look like "Nightmare Luffy."

It's possible for Gear second abilities to be included in that Gear too. Either way, the author must leave room for the development of another Gear( a fifth gear). You must keep in mind that the size of nightmare Luffy's arm is smaller than the one of Gear 3.

Re: One Piece Chapter 780 Discussion / 781 Predictions

Btw, I have noticed something interesting.
When Law says to Doflamingo: "Go lick the ass of all of Dressrosa's citizens!" (Wtf xD), while looking the words up in the dictionary, I found that the word for "ass" can also mean "vote" and the word for "lick" can also mean "to taste/to experience".
Mangastream does NOT give the literal translation of the words, or even one close to it. The whole translation is filled to the brim with idioms, jargon, and slangs. Just thought you ought to know that before looking up the meaning of THEIR words ;)

According to Aohige Ap (the guy who kindly provides a summary every weeks:) )Law actually said "lick the ass" :

Aohige said:
Law told Dofla to go lick the asses of citizens, not shoes.
I guess "kiss my ass" is too vulgar for Panda?
True that MS translations are a bit slangy which sometimes may sound "too much" regarding the actual human relationships in Japan (politeness, hierarchy, saving face importance etc. )
But, believe me, literal translation is definitely a wrong approach, especially when both langages are utterly different (like Japanese & English). Risks are most of time to get an imcomplete, or misleading, inconsistent or even nonsensical translation.
In translation, you have to take in account, everything, context, original culture + target culture, imagery/metaphors, implicit/connotations, idioms, polysemy and even the unsaid, and rephrase it in the equivalent target-language.
As for literal translations, google does a perfect job :hee .

Yep Aohige's translation is usually the most accurate one, and MS choose a different wording for some obscure reason. However they are pretty fast and compared to mangapanda's translation that can be a bit messy, it's generally the one I prefer to read. I encourage everyone to read Aohige's summaries because they're definitely more accurate.

Concering DD and how strong he is, this is obviously off-topic, however since we're already just a few days before the chapter release, I guess it can't be helped. To me he's definitely one of the strongest shichibukai, but I don't see Crocodile on the same level, and pretty much any Shichi before him, with the exception maybe for Kuma. DD gives the impression that he's not really trying while he fights, that he completely controls the situation and there's only a few instances where he got caught off guard, which couldn't have been possible if it weren't for Law's ability. I think it's pretty clear why this could be Luffy's first real challenge since they entered NW.

So now we have three different translations.
Mangastream's translation says lick the anus of every last citizen in this poor country. Ass in Japanese means oshiri, which, I think, could also be translated to one's "behind" or "buttocks." It's certainly different from anus.

If it were vulgar, all it had to do was use "buttocks" or "behind" instead.

If Mangapanda had been a comic site that find such words vulgar or/and obscene, it would have ceased hosting Berserk. That manga the least it does is give us the pictorial definition of the word ass. It contains violence, gore, nudity, sex, orgies, rape - you name it - textually and pictorially.
Even if were considering the age of the targeted audience, ass would still not be something that One Piece audience could find shocking, I believe. Besides, you always find them inserting ass when Luffy says "I'm going to beat your ass."

And this is not all. You even find polite characters suddenly use words like f**k(not fork :p), either for emphasis or to express annoyance. It shocks me. You find yourself used to a character whose words have always been polite suddenly talks in that manner. And that's only through Stream's translation.

This is not all. Mangastream uses non-literal or wrong translation of words when the literal translation is what's needed.

Expect typos from the transliteration of my Japanese.
Mangapanda:

Doffy: Leave him, Law. Ceasar is my cute subordinate.

It translates to oiteke, Law. Ceasar wa oreno kawai bukada.
I confirmed this in anime.

Mangastream:
Doffy: Ceasar stays here, Law. He is my indispensable subordinate.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leave him = oiteke. It is not stays here.
kawai = cute. It certainly does not mean indispensable.
Except that oshiri also means anus. Japanese is a complex language where a character can have different readings, and like Erin explained it depends on the context too. Not to mention slangs and idioms and whatnot.
Now when it comes to the translations, as I have pointed out in the NnT forum, MS uses a wording that is not always the most clear one. Since now they do NnT and OP I can actually see that more clearly. I remember a while back there was a debate in OP about a line Law said about his sphere of influence. The translation MS gave was a not that clear, and many were confused about what this sphere is. Aohige on the other hand explained very well, and I can say that something similar happened with NnT which was always translated by Red hawk scans and whose translation is by far the best. But MS are pretty fast, and they provide a somewhat reliable translation so that's why you see most people reading theirs. Aohige's summaries are more than enough to understand the chapter, and you can always come back to check if something was changed in mangapanda's or MS' translations.
Again translating Japanese is no easy task, and looking up the significance of the words online without knowing how the Japanese language works won't amount to much, even using addons like rikaikun or rikaichan will not be that useful especially when it comes to the transcription in Roman letters of some words. So it's best to leave that to those who have an extensive knowledge of Japanese, and who btw provide their translations for free.
Also I think you missed the point of Erinyes' post, it's not that we need the literal translation, we need the most accurate one. Using the literal one wouldn't do much good because of how the Japanese language works , not to mention some idioms, metaphors etc will not make any sense in English. So the best that a translator can do is to come up with a translation that is as close it can get to the original meaning in Japanese but that can be understandable for other audiences, english speaking ones in this case.
Re: One Piece Chapter 780 Discussion / 781 Predictions
Buggy is such an annoying character, I am sure Oda has something planned for him at the end of one piece.
His new Gear-3 techniques, which are imbued with haki, are Elephant Gun, Elephant Gatling, and Grizzly Magnum.
Do not let the similarity between Grizzly Magnum and Grizzly Bear, which is often reduced to a "grizzly," confuse you. The word "grizzly" in Grizzly Bear contains two morphemes: grizzle + -y.
Grizzle means grey. The suffix -y when added to a noun or an adjective to form another adjective means "to have the quality of." In other words, to have the quality of grey.
Grizzly bears are named for the grizzle effect that their silver or pale-tipped hairs give.
Grizzly Magnum on the other other hand is a real gun that comes in silver and black colours, as far as I have seen.
So in case, next chapter Luffy used some new gear-3 attack, just as he used a new gear2 attack this chapter, it wouldn't necessarily have an animal name in it. It would be cool if it had one though.
This remains just what you think. When you see a fish that is underwater, it doesn't mean it is where it appears to be. I fully understand Erinyes' point. I wasn't talking about the literal translation of the entire chapter. I was talking about the literal translation of just a word, phrase, or sentence at best inside a speech bubble, which neither contains idioms, metaphors, nor anything that would require dependence upon its context for its clarity to surfaces.
Speaking about providing translation for "free," I thought it was evident that they have their gains too: website advertisements, for instance.
But yeah, that pretty much describes the process for most anime adaptations of long running mangas.
Actually, Kawaii means also dear, precious and may have others meanings in Japanese we dont't necessary know. A word don't have a unique meaning, but most of time many (that's called polysemy : the existence of several meanings in a single word) and somes specific uses that a person who has not an accurate knowledge of a given language/ culture, may not know.
"Valued", "precious", even "indispensable" is ok, "cute" is definitely a misinterpretation due to a word-to-word translation, and a lack ok Japanese language knowledge background. Mangastream uses non-literal or wrong translation of words when the literal translation is what's needed.
Most of times a word to word translation doesn't work as I said earlier. Yes, I agree about the colloquial aspects, but definitely not with literal translations. As one of my linguistics teacher used to say: " translation is not about translating words, but their meaning". It's definitely not the same, as your "cute" exmple proves.
Well the context once again determines whether it has that meaning or no.If it's in a context where it is obviously anus, then it is used that way. You have to figure out the rest for yourself :) And if we're going to have literal translations it would be such a mess because obviously you have to rearrange the order of the words, because the Japanese language has the verb at the end etc,. And you missed the point of what I said. Japanese words as they are transcribed have two readings, and such words can have then other meanings. With this is mind it seems obvious that rather than a word to word translation, it's an interpretation of the intended meaning of the words that we're dealing with. This is particularily true for Kanji, other words that are transcribed in hiragana or katakana are usually fix. And even if let's say they advertised for their site, there are people who can still use adblockers. And my comment was more about translators like Aohige, who are not part of a translation group, and who are mostly fans of the manga and who share with us the scans way before their release. I doubt they have anything substantial to gain from that.
Just because you have searched a bunch of words online makes you knowledgeable enough about the language in order to decide how translators should do their work. Online ressources are far from being extensive, not to mention without a proper introduction to Japanese grammar and vocabulary, as well as the writing system, you cannot understand how difficult translating Japanese can be. Anyway this is off-topic, so I'll be moving this to another thread.
Re: One Piece Chapter 780 Spoiler Discussion
"Actually, Kawaii means also dear, precious and may have others meanings in Japanese we dont't necessary know."
Japanese language sure works in strange ways - ways that an outsider like me doesn't
quite understand.
"A word don't have a unique meaning, but most of time many (that's called polysemy : the existence of several meanings in a single word) and somes specific uses that a person who has not an accurate knowledge of a given language/ culture, may not know."
A word doesn't necessarily have to be polysemous. It could also be monosemous. If a word like, let's say, magnesium, or lipid, or neuron was used, shouldn't the translation be literal? They are monosemous words after all, and I can't imagine them being used figuratively either.
"Valued", "precious", even "indispensable" is ok, "cute" is definitely a misinterpretation due to a word-to-word translation, and a lack ok Japanese language knowledge background. Plus, "cute" is obviously wrong given the story context (More chances that Caesar is "indispensable/ valued" than "cute" to Doffy )."
That's what I noticed after I had searched other translations. Also, the confirmation I did using anime was a wrong idea after all, because anime might also contain slightly different words or/ and additional words, that do not exist in the original text. Perhaps the word kawai means cute mostly when it's used as an interjection.
"Most of times a word to word translation doesn't work as I said earlier. Yes, I agree about the colloquial aspects, but definitely not with literal translations. As one of my linguistics teacher used to say: " translation is not about translating words, but their meaning". It's definitely not the same, as your "cute" exmple proves."
If only it did stop at the colloquial aspects.
A)
Mangastream does not take seriously its audience into account. When Viola's ability was revealed( the ability to see anything in the radius of 4000 Km, according to Cnet and Mangapanda), Mangastream used the unit "mile" instead of "kilometer."
When you convert miles to kilometers, Viola will be able to see anything within a radius of 6437 Km. This is one of those cases where Mangastream did not use the literal translation when it was needed, because not only does Japan use the SI units or the metric units but more than 90% of the world's population uses the metric system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_System_of_Units#Global_adoption
Since they were resolute in using the U.S.Customary System in their translation, the least they could have done is convert between the two units.
By the way, for those who were victims of these errors, 1 mi(mile) = 1.61km(kilometer). So since Viola is able to see anything in a radius of 4000 km, in U.S Customary units it is 2485 miles. In cases like these, a calculator sure can be handy :teehee.
Mangastream:
Chopper: This is bad!!! Get the "tourniquet" out from my backpack.
Chopper: A little bit more to the "right."
Batoto:
Chopper: Oh, no!!! Robin, look in my bag!!! There should be an "injection" to stop his bleeding!
Chopper: A little to the "left." A little further.
Mangapanda:
Chopper: This is bad, Robin!!! There's "material" to stop the bleeding in my rucksack.
Chopper: A little more to the "left."
As you can see, in Stream's translation they used "tourniquet" instead of "injection", and "right" instead of "left". When chopper was about to give Luffy an injection(vitamin K) to stop the bleeding, he was holding a syringe, not a tourniquet, and was pointing to the left.
Mangastream:
Mihawk: Has your sword ever broken?
Zoro: well, yeah...more times than I can count. Even you broke one of mine.
First off, Zoro's swords have broke two times. The first time was when he dueled Mihawk and lost in the process.
The second time was in Enies Lobby: it was destroyed by the user of the Rust Rust Devil Fruit.
Secondly, since we know that Mihawk broke two of his swords, a form of plural is necessary there.
Cnet's translation:
Flashback!Mihawk: Have you ever had your blades broken?
Zoro: No damage to the blade...
Flashback!Zoro: Well, once or twice... Hell, you broke them once!!
Cnet translated it how it should be. Plurals are used how they should be. Zoro's words make perfect sense.
What I gave you is just a drop in the bucket.
You know what would be a good way to know for sure? Is to look at the Japanese scans, simple as that. They can be found online, but prolly only after the chapter comes out. Also I'm not sure when the other translations come out, the more reliable ones I mean. MS is pretty fast, not as fast as mangapanda I think ,but faster than most translation teams. Of course when you talk about a fast release, it means that less effort will be put into checking whether the translation is as it should be, with the more accurate wording and the plural etc. Of course we don't force anyone to read a "botched" translation, if we could call MS' that. To me it seems like a good compromise between a fast release and a quality one, obviously the quality ones come out much later than MS. And there are other options too like reading WSJ scans on their english site.
It's not like OP is only translated by one or two groups, so there is a lot of possibilities when it comes to the translations.
