Definitely, I hope he's not using the lack of sleep to fuel his creativity, no sleep can have detrimental effects mentally. Do mangaka in general usually have health issues? I'm sure the HxH mangaka needed back surgery or similar iirc?
Oh they do, a lot.Starting from a certain age they pretty much start to have health problems. The Japanese also tend to smoke a lot too.I remember the case of an author who died, not a mangaka but a novelist, and she died at a relatively young age, 55 or something before she could finish her work (Guin saga). She died of cancer. She released about 100 volumes ,so she could have been a workaholic.
Actually the issue is not just taking a break every month, on top of that Oda hasn't had the usual yearly holiday. If he were to travel for example that could help him to stay in good shape, and be more relaxed. It goes without saying he shouldn't work at all during that period. I think it might even make him come back more motivated and inspired by what he saw which could improve his work.
So of course he should take his usual breaks, maybe even more often since there's quite a few instances when the chapter isn't out due to holidays, and not Oda himself. So in the end he doesn't take a whole lot of breaks. And even if there is a holiday there can be early releases of the chapter, when the magazine comes out earlier, just like this week.So he's not taking some time off from his work, he still has to come up with a chapter .It's just the magazine's decision to have an issue come out earlier.
Most mangaka work at night, and they sleep a few hours a day, this should take a toll on their health, sooner or later. And so few hours of sleep too, it's really not good.Let's pray for Oda's health to stay good, we really don't want him to fall sick again. He had to remove his tonsils the last time...

From what I've seen for the past 5 years or so, yes. Every year, a lot of chapters from different mangas/authors wouldn't get published due to [insert health problem/emergency here]. I know some were way more regular (or should I say irregular?) than others, and I think at some point One Piece had a lot of those unexpected breaks, but it's gotten much better now.

I've seen a lot of articles detailing how working in the anime sector is just barbaric and extremely stressful, not to mention the very low pay, but I also think the same applies to manga authors. I mean come on, with everything that Oda has by now, he could have a building all to himself and his team, like those Google buildings or something, with beds and games everywhere, yet they just continue to kill themselves with work because that's all they do, they just can't find the time to do anything else, and it's really sad.

I'm just a fan like millions of others who is fortunate enough to be able to read the manga (without paying a thing) and watch the anime (thanks fansubs), but it's really sad to know that authors and animators don't get the credit they deserve, and more importantly the breaks and workplace conditions that they should've gotten years ago.

No the pay for mangaka can be quite good, but all thanks to merchandise. Some mangaka are millionaires like Rumiko Takahashi, and Oda is doing quite good financially.Again you're comparing two different mediums, the anime sector is not representative of the manga sector and vice versa. The pay is bad in the anime sector because an animator can work on 3 or 4 projects at once, they need to be flexible and the market now is overflooded with anime projects. And it's actually Tezuka who implemented this system when there was just starting to be an anime industry, and hence they needed to hire people who weren't professionals, who don't even know how to animate. And it was adopted ever since, without any kind of reform or changes made to it.
Funny how this was discussed in the Magi section, but here's a pretty good explanation as to why animation can suck:
http://amatsu-otome.tumblr.com/post/126335747579/skhaan-i-saw-this-on-twitter-and-i-think-its

And you can pretty much tell it's different than the manga which Oda has rights to, as well as any kind of official merchandise based on it.

They are different cases. In the manga scenario, we are talking about the author, while in the anime industry it's about workers. While a mangaka schelude seems to be very harsh, it seems the worst part is the kind of contract they sign. In regards of animators, they basically work endless ours for low payment. But like they say, you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

Going monthly won't solve the issue with Shueisha selling their most popular series on the week to week basis for the last ~40 years.

I don't want to wait a month for 30-40 pages, you don't want that, Oda doesn't even want that, who in their right mind would want the plot to move even slower, for the series and especially Oda to take even more time?.

It would be 50-60 pages roughly, but as a viewer, I dont think it would matter.. If i remm correctly, FMA was similar too, monthly and I'd wait and read it, it wasnt bad. In terms of revenue, diff story. It probably might not help Oda much either, so that would make it pointless.

It might not be such a bad idea, assuming we get around the same amount of pages we usually get in a month. It might give him more freedom to write as his own pace, and he won't be too stressed about the deadlines.
But the fear is that if it's monthly the story won't progress as much, which is one of the grips I have with SnK. However this can also be because of the way the author tells his story, which switches between really important events involving the Titans, and more political issues which can be seen as less important.
It's up to him really, and it might not be proven that it will help his life style. He could still work as much to come up with 40-50 pages.

Hey everyone! I'm always on the Hunter x Hunter board but wanted to come by and talk some One Piece! I recently watched a ton of OP and am just loving it so damn much. Idk why I waited so long to get into the series.

I have a question :

How high ranked is Doflamingo compared to the other Shichibukai (sp? I hope I didn't butcher it.
My phone is at 1% and can't check! lol) ?

Always good to see new readers and posters, so welcome :ifranky

Put simply, there is no hierarchy within the Shichibukai system or any individuals in OP, unless their titles/position states so( Captain, Admiral, etc). In terms of power, which I assume is what you meant, he's probably one of the strongest within the group, we've yet to see Mihawk or Hancock really go at it, but I'd say he'd be in the top 3 strongest Shichibukai.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's the 2nd strongest in that group after Mihawk tbh, Hancock didn't go all out and I don't think we'll have the chance to see Kuma go all out too

What impressed me most with DD is his inhuman stamina, it was something really amazing + his DF mastery, he was a beast on his own

Oh yeah, I watched it a long time ago, and felt that the one who made the video was simply hating on OP. But then I rewatched it yesterday for some reason and found it hilarious.XD
One of the things that I agree about is that Nami is the strongest SH. Seriously she beats everyone, and although it is for comic relief purposes, it's just amazing to see her beat Zoro or even Luffy who shouldn't be hurt too much by simple punches.

For those who are interested there's also the Bleach, Naruto, AoT honest trailers. The Bleach one is extremely funny.:D

Tsuru in Japanese means Crane if I'm not mistaken, which happens to be the bird represented in that page.
This might be just like those requests from fans, not sure since there's no translation.

Did he take fan requests back in chapter 124??? I am not sure, he probably did and this could also be just a drawing, but Oda has used Cover Page and art before to hint a lot of things (Ace's death for instance).

This could just be a random art not related, but if it were not random and an Oda planned hidden message, it could be interpreted as Tsuru - Sanji connection....

Doflamingo and the sparrow island incident happened 13 years ago, that's when Tsuru was in N.Blue.

As pe Wikia, 9 years before the attack on Baratie, Sanji was a cook on the ship when Zeff attacked it. So that's 11 years before the current timeline.

It could be that incident happened in North Blue for all we know or maybe not, maybe Tsuru was involved sometime before that as well..

According to the wikia this cover is part of a series called "SHs with animals". Sanji is asking for directions. The animal in this case in the crane.

I think it's a bit too far-fetched to think that this cover in particular hints to a Tsuru-Sanji connection. And in what cover did he foreshadow Ace's death?:huh
A few chapters back some thought that Oda foreshadowed that Zou is the emerald city(Oz) because of the fact that Doflamingo is seen in a cover using a bunch of puppets that are reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz(Dorothy and co). Turns out Zou literally meaning elephant in Japanese, is an "island" on a giant elephant's back.
I think while Oda could leave some hints, it's a bit ridiculous to think that OP can be so predictable, that a cover would tell us about important plot points such as these.

When it comes to foreshadowing I believe Oda leaves hint inside the manga, if he ever does so. And when it comes to making predictions, it's best to rely on substantial info in the manga, not so much on covers which can be requests.

---------- Post added at 02:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:13 AM ----------

Here's what the wikia page of Tsuru says about her name:
Eiichiro Oda has stated that he tends to name female characters after birds. This tradition continues with Tsuru, whose name means "crane". Her name can also be translated as "to hang", depicting her ability.
So while it is the crane, it can also hint to her ability, "to hang" which is specific to her DF, the Woshu Woshu no mi. Thanks to it she's able to "hang" people like if she was doing the laundry.

Some of the meaning of "つる:tsuru". As a noun it can be
鶴: a crane (bird)
蔓: a vine (plant)
As a verb
釣る: to fish
吊る: to hang

What's interesting is that according to the wikia Oda names his female characters after birds. Tsuru is one of them, so is Robin.

So it's not something unique to Tsuru.

When we talk about Wano and Swords, it's always includes Zoro getting a new one. Would be nice if Brook got a sword too, or was the one to get a sword.
